Debian Multimedia :: Fluxbox Is Using 100% CPU
Feb 13, 2016
Debian 8, Fluxbox 1.3.5. I'll go to bed and my system is fine, in the morning I notice my system is sluggish. Changing focus between iceweasel and terminator takes > 10 seconds.
Top is telling me fluxbox is using 100% cpu. My system has 4 cores. Load average is 1.8. Next highest cpu user is iceweasel at 35%. iowait is 0. 4 gigs of free ram.
I'm guessing fluxbox shouldn't be using so many cycles. How do I collect enough information about what fluxbox is doing to file a bug report?
My end goal here is to have my system be responsive, ie, it shouldn't take > 10 seconds to change window focus.

I've been browsing the fluxbox documentation and the web looking for answers to a couple of fluxbox configuration questions. I'm unfamiliar with fluxbox and hopefully my empty search is my unfamiliarity with fluxbox terminology. I'm building a web browsing appliance (basically a kiosk). The only purpose of the system is to provide a web browser for house guests.
I had good success disabling most features in fluxbox, such as limiting keyboard hotkeys, stripping the main and window menus, deleting all but one workspace, etc.I have not found solutions for the following:
1. Disabling the workspace pop-up menu. This menu appears with either the left or right mouse button. As most people using this system will be familiar with the traditional desktop model and expect a "Start" menu, I would like to disable that workspace pop-up menu. I don't want users to have access to any configuration options anywhere.
2. Add an Exit/Logout button to the toolbar. The desktop menu has such an option. A toolbar button would be nice but is not required.
3. Same as the previous but add a web browser button to the toolbar. The desktop menu has such an option. A toolbar button would be nice but is not required.

I just installed Lenny base and added Fluxbox as wm. I can start Fluxbox from root with "startx" command but only get a light blue screen that is frozen if I try to start Fluxbox from the command line user ID using "startx." I think that it might be an ownership problem but I'm not sure what files I should change the owrnship of, if any. Some of the in installation of fluxbox was done from the root directory instead of from the user directory using the sudo command.

I have a headless server which I have recently clean-installed debian6 on. I want to install fluxbox (I connect remotely using No Machine). I had a similar setup with debian5 earlier but have lost the notes I made during the previous install.When I google minmal gui installs, there are different 'recipes' concerning which base packages for x are necessary e.g. xorg, x-window-system-core etc.Which packages for x should I choose (and why)?I don't use a display manager (gdm etc.), and the hardware is not so powerful (via en12000).

On xfce I really liked orage, however on fluxbox I don't want to install all its dependencies (xfce4-gui, xfce4panel, +++) for just a calendar. So, I'm looking for a light calendar app that will allow me to store appointments. Ideally it would integrate nicely with fluxbox, so either launchable by clicking on the clock, or else mapped transparently onto the desktop just like conky. If it could work with conky that would be pretty ideal as well, and it must have the ability to send notifications (either by sound or screen) about upcoming appointments, reminders, etc.
I've seen xcalendar mentioned on these forums, but it doesn't seem to be in the repos anymore (squeeze). Also rainlender, though I don't like that it's not in the repos and has pro/free versions. Sunbird is an option, but kind of large and clunky for what I'll be using it for. Right now I'm thinking gdeskcal is my best bet, but I'm hoping others will have better ideas. If gdeskcal fails to impress, I may have no choice but to go with sunbird (aka iceowl) and perhaps use conky to display the calendar on the desktop, and make it launchable from clicking the clock on fluxbox. My mail application is claws, which has some limited vlcalendar functionality.

I upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze.
I use Fluxbox as the window manager in X Window. I installed hibernate packages and gnome power management. I set the idle time at 30 minutes using the gnome power management program. It doesn't suspend at all. The monitor only shuts off during idle.
So, I logged in as root, started X. Without .xinitrc gnome desktop manager launched. As I clicked shutdown, it showed a dialog box asking hibernate / suspend / restart / etc. And then, I chose the [hibernate], the system shut down and came back to previous status when system restarted.
Which gnome program does control hibernate / suspend?
Is there anyway that I can control hibernate / suspend in command? I just need to make a little script and assign it to a launch key so that I can suspend the system when it's on idle.

I only just upgraded to Squeeze and am now running Fluxbox 1.1.1. The toolbar is acting strangely, though, and I can't seem to find a solution online.
An example: I open Iceweasel, Thunar, and Icedove. If Iceweasel has focus, its window title will be on the left side of the toolbar. If I switch applications, and put that Thunar window in focus, the Thunar window title because the most-left item on the toolbar. I focus Icedove, Icedove's window title becomes the most left object on the toolbar and so on.

Is it possible to restore previous session using bash script when fluxbox starts?

I am running Xandros on an asus netbook. I've been trying out the fluxbox window manager. I'm having trouble getting akregator to start after login. I've been able to edit my ~/.fluxbox/apps file and can get other programs to start up just fine. here is my apps file: I added konqueror and kcalc after akregator just to see if they worked.
Code: [startup] {powermonitor}
[startup] {akgregator}
[startup] {konqueror}
[startup] {kcalc}
[startup] {minimixer}
[startup] {networkmonitor ath0 eth0}
[group]
[app] (.*[tT]erm)
[end]
[app] (konqueror)
[end]

I've got everything installed so far that I need and everything is customized down to the boot splash and the mouse theme. I'm using fluxbox on the newest debian (5.0.3). But for some reason I just CANT change the default icons theme for gtk apps like thunar. I've installed the gnome icons theme and that one works fine.
I've tried editing ~/.gtkrc-2.0.mine as well as ~/.gtkrc-2.0 by add the line gtk-icon-theme-name="theme" but it just doesn't work even after doing a restart. I've also tried putting the icons folder under /usr/share/icons as well as ~/.icons but still nothing...

I've looked at many tutorials on the internet but none helped me much.I've already tried to edit fstab so it would have something like /dev/cdrom/media/cdrom0udf,iso9660user,auto00.But the thing is this only takes effect when the OS loads, and the CD has to be inserted at that time, so it's not something permanent or viable. What I'm looking for it's something to auto-mount the cd in the fluxbox GUI when it's inserted just like in Gnome or Kde.

I have researched this for a couple of days and I am not getting anywhere. My Fedora 12 install is working just fine with the standard gnome desktop. I can plug in any usb drive and it is recognized and mounted with a link on the desktop. But I want to use Fluxbox. I installed and am running FB just fine except that I can't get usb devices to be recognized and mounted.I don't need a link on the desktop but an entry in /media would be nice.
I am thoroughly confused about which method I should be using to do this simple task. I created a HAL policy for my trackpad to work. Do I need to do something similar for the usb? I have read about udev rules but they seem to be concerned with NOT mounting usb devices. I also read about autofs and thunar but it seems like there should be a much simpler approach and I have certainly missed it.

many of you may have heard of fluxbox and maybe even used it, if you did you will have noticed a very quick but extremely sparse window manager and probably decided it wasn't for you due to lack of features. I'll show you how to quickly and easily give fluxbox all the features of your desktop.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04. I have been using fluxbox for a loooong time, but just recently decided it would be cute to have some desktop icons and such. It looks like fbdesk is supposed to do exactly what i want. I installed the package, set up a rudimentary fbdesk.icons file and ran fbdesk from a terminal. It looks like it should be running just fine, but no icons! I also tried going w/o an icons file to get it to spit out the default icon, but also nothing.

Whenever I set a new wallpaper on Fluxbox with feh, it goes away as soon as I log out and log back in. It is probably relevant to say that my login wallpaper just so happens to be the same one that Fluxbox automatically switches to when it logs in, which I changed (somehow, can't remember how).

I wanted to know if it's possible to add the Fluxbox-menu to Ubuntu 11.04 Unity Desktop (or similar), because I love the menu from Fluxbox but don't want to give up the Unity Desktop of Ubuntu 11.04. Is there a Option to implement it? Or a similar Program which does the same? Or is it simply not possible?

I use a dvorak layout, but fluxbox refuses to acknowledge my settings. I can only set dvorak layout by either painstakingly typing it out in the terminal with qwerty or opening KDE settings. Neither of which is much of an option. The first is too annoying and opening KDE settings kind of kills the point of using fluxbox in the first place.
Other things I've tried:
I put Option XkbLayout "us"/XkbVariant "dvorak" in xorg.conf --> It's completely ignored. I put setxkbmap blah blah in .xinitrc, .fluxbox/startup and again it's completely ignored.

well you might have noticed that ubuntu 10.04 comes with some crappy purple background on gdm, well my problem is that when i start fluxbox it keeps that background as wallpaper even when i put fbsetbg code on startup to change it, even i put a delay to wait like 3 seconds and still the background is the one on GDM.
