Debian Multimedia :: Gpsbabel Now Only Works As Root On Squeeze
Feb 7, 2011
gpsbabel has always been a little awkward to get going, but it works well once it does. Out of the box on Lenny, gpsbabel just gave errors for me reading from a garmin unit, and the required solution was two steps: firstly, remove (and blacklist) the kernel module "garmin_gps". Secondly, add a udev rule like this:SYSFS{idVendor}=="091e", SYSFS{idProduct}=="0003", MODE="0660", group="plugdev" and save this as /etc/udev/rules.d/51-garmin.rules.
Now, I never understood why or how that worked, but it did (on Lenny), straight away, and was listed as gpsbabel's solution here (I notice it now says MODE="666").
Anyway, now I'm on Squeeze and have the same problems again. I've blacklisted garmin_gps again, and it doesn't appear in lsmod.
I've still got my udev rule, but now gpsbabel fails as a normal user with the error:

Are you running Lenny? If yes, try this:
Be sure that there is an active X.
Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to tty1.
Login with your normal username and password.
Enter the command: "xrandr -d :0.0 -q"
You should be rewarded with information about your current screen.
Are you running Squeeze? If yes, try the above procedure and please explain to me what this means: No protocol specified
Can't open display :0.0

I have been using my system for couple of weeks, and normally update software when the icon is displayed on top bar (gnome). Last couple of days there were updates for X, and I am not sure whether that is the cause of my problem. Once bootup, I get the login screen. When enter the password the login screen keep coming back. there is no error about any password issue, or anything. It keeps prompt me to enter the password.
I could login back the following way.
1. ctrl + alt + F1 , and login with the same username/pwd as for X
2.change to root
3.pkill gdm3
4.exit from root to user privilege
5. startx
The system starts X correctly and no login screen is displayed. I could use the system as usual.
The only thing I did custom to my system was upgrading to the latest kernel (2.6.38) using the source. This was to get support for my hardware, but that was about a month ago. I do not see anything in /var/log (X, demesg etc).

I have sound if I use aplay or start totem using sudo but neither have sound if I try aplay or totem as ordinary user. The groups command shows my user name is a member of the audio and video groups. If I look at the /etc/group file it also shows pulse as a member of audio group.
This is a command line install from the 10.04 Alternate CD to which I installed xorg, icewm, gdm, nautilus, synaptic, totem, firefox, gstreamer, alsa, pulse, and others. Every thing works except the user audio. Totem will show videos but no sound. Totem will play MP3 music files (show the cover art and the progress) but no sound. But it all works ok, good sound, if I start Totem as root.
What am I missing? I don't expect in depth help with this installation but thought maybe something would just pop out at someone?

I finally got Sueeze installed and it works great for my user account. It won't accept my root password and so I can not do anything as root. This is strickly a home desktop setup and I am the only user. I have a working Ubuntu 10.10 in the ajacent partition. How can I change (or reinstall) my root password. Everything I've found says to boot single user and I have, but I still need the root password in Debian.

I just setup a debian OS(in emulator) and trying to use apt-get update. When I log in as root and do:
export http_proxy=http://proxy.com:9090
apt-get update works
If I use another user and ssh to this debian, sudo apt-get update will fail to work because it don't use the proxy. I try to do the export http_proxy stuff again but still not working. echo $http_proxy showing it already set correctly...
p/s:
I have a workaround by adding this lines in the apt.conf
ACQUIRE {
http::proxy "http://proxy.com:9090"
}
but I really don't want this solutions because I want to easily disable the http_proxy in command prompt (by unset it).

I have a fresh install of Squeeze with CD1. I have no root password to open admin apps, so I set one with 'sudo passwd root' and then I'm able to open them, but only once. I have to set the root password every time prior to opening an admin app. Am I doing something wrong? Could I be missing a package?

Before I ask I know what I'm asking is not recommended.
On Lenny It was possible to change the boot login to permit logins as root
I can't find how to do that since I installed Squeeze.

I cannot find a post that matches this scenario...the id created during the install (from CD) of Karmic has fully usable sound. However, users created from the Users and Groups app do not.
I have made sure that all users are defined to the audio, pulse, pulse-audio, and pulse-rt groups. No luck.
I have followed every step I have read having to do with the alsamixer. No luck.
I have verified that alsa and linux itself are at the latest versions.

i'm running Ubuntu 10.04 server and want to turn on the pc-speaker warning-beep.I commented out the line in /etc/modprobe.d blacklist.conf:
#blacklist pcspkr
The beep is now working for root. But somehow it won't work if i log in as a normal user. (i don't know why, but if i install beep the beep-command works for all users...unfortunately beep seems not to make a warning sound in all cases so this is no solution for me)

I finally installed Squeeze on my laptop and found out that the XF86Audio multimedia keys do not work.
When I press them, they're correctly identified by xev but they do not produce the desired effect (raise/lower/mute volume, play/pause/stop/prev/next song in media players like Sonata).
Funnily enough though, they do work in Audacious, which has its own plugin to manage XF86Audio media keys.
So it's like the action of pressing these keys is not intercepted by the system and no event is triggered.
I think this might be due to a missing package or configuration but I have no idea where to look...

Below is the recipe I've used to compile dwm from source on Squeeze
su
apt-get install devscripts debian-keyring
apt-get build-dep dwm
exit
It all seems to work, however debuild gave an error about secret keys. Is this a sensible procedure? What happens in the (probably unlikely) event there is another source patch?I've gone to a tiling window manager as the result of the purchase of a wide screen LCD monitor. I like to have some stuff down the right hand side when running Firefox and OpenOffice in the main panes. Any configuration tricks welcome. Modern screens are the wrong shape!

I was trying to edit a file requiring root permissions, so I used sudo. I typed the root password and it failed. This happened three times, and the process was ended. I then logged in as root (su) and was able to navigate to the file and make changes as root. Am I missing something? How would I edit the sudoers file such that this password would work? Or is there another way to log in to the sudo group to make these changes? How do I set sudo passwords?

I've just installed Squeeze 6.01a from the xfce iso image on an old PIII which has been running Lenny with xfce without any problems. It's a fresh install after a reformat.
Sounds and multimedia apps like gxine and mplayer all worked fine on Lenny and other older versions. Now they don't - not gxine, not mplayer not even VLC. Run from the menu they all abort - and if run in an xterm they all crash with the following message -
Assertion 'pthread_mutex_unlock(&m->mutex) == 0' failed at pulsecore/mutex-posix.c:108, function pa_mutex_unlock(). Aborting.

After unsuccessfully trying to install some updates on my debian squeeze system, I can no longer login to gnome when I restart the system. I've tried logging in both as root and as user and have typed in 'startx' or 'gnome-session' at the prompt but I get an error message "**(gnome-session:12020): WARNING **: Cannot open display:". I've searched the web for solutions but nothing works. I've had my debian squeeze for over three years now with no issues.

On a fresh install of squeeze, I can't log in to an AIM account with being immediately disconnected and given this error: You have been connecting and disconnecting too frequently. Wait ten minutes and try again. If you continue to try, you will need to wait even longer.
I waited for several hours before trying to reconnect, but got the same message. Searching for the error led me to some bug reports from upwards of three years ago.
Strangely, this error hasn't occurred on any of my other squeeze systems.
I can ping login.oscar.aol.com as well as login.messaging.aol.com; both resolve to 205.188.251.43 for me. I tried changing the "Server" under "Advanced" to this address, but again I got the same error.
