I have tried to use the extensions toggle-touchpad and touchpad-indicator that claim to be able to do this, but neither will load properly. They show up with a little exclamation-point-triangle in the "Tweaks" panel saying "Error loading extension". How to get Jessie gnome system succeeded in getting their touchpad disabled via a simpe toggle mechanism?

I also have an option in BIOS to disable touchpad when external mouse is plugged in, which I enable without any result.
I have installed gpointing-device-settings. It does exactly what I want it to do, disable the touchpad, until I reboot (not sure about logging out/in) and the touchpad is again enabled. So the vicious circle continues and I disable it for the session. Back in the days of xorg.conf it was easy enough to disable but of course that file, and the option to disable from within that file no longer exists for me. When I use Debian I can modprobe -r psmouse. That was a perfect solution as the touchpad was never heard from again with regard to that distribution. Attempting to remove that module under Fedora 15 results in the following.

How about this angle. When I use gpointing-device-settings to toggle the touchpad on/off there must be one or more files that are altered. There is a function key on this laptop, F9, that looks like it toggles the touchpad but it doesn't work under Fedora 15. Never tried it in any other releases.
What can I do to disable ONLY the LEFT touchpad button on my laptop? Left Click sticks by itself randomly, this causes problems when using my USB mouse (such as permanent dragging, permanent highlighting, permanent inability to left click anything, the computer is pretty much dead to me unless I try to tab around), it also causes issues with the Tap to Click, and it also causes Ubuntu to not recognize my "Left Handed" mouse button set up after boot for ONLY the touchpad. On the USB mouse, buttons work swapped.
Current solution: Left Handed Button Swap. Touch pad to click. Right touchpad button to right click. Sometimes I use my USB (which does recognize the swap). This is the 3rd install of vanilla Ubuntu (tried it just in case). That's not the issue. This is a Dell Inspiron 6000. I want to just disable the left button on ONLY the touchpad, I don't want this to affect my USB mouse. I want to keep the right button touch pad working. And of course I want my mouse to work. But, actually, my ideal is to sacrifice the left button, use Tap to Click, and use the right mouse button for right clicking. If I can't save the right click, can I disable both buttons?
I have an Asus K6LIC laptop. In Windows if I press function+F9, it toggles my touchpad on and off. I'm wondering if I can get this functionality in Ubuntu 10.10. All other function keys work, except for this one. The only thing I can find is to permanently disable the touchpad, which is not what I want to do.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble using touch pad in jessie. My touch pad was ok when it's in wheezy but after i updated to jessie, i can't really get used to it.
I don't know whether i setting it up wrongly, sometimes, my touchpad will keep dragging, without releasing. And if I click the bottom right of the touch pad, it's not right click; instead i have to use two fingers.
etc. So how can i change to back to a more traditional usage? Also, do jessie have a setting like ubuntu saying disable touch pad while typing?
I have a very weird issue with a Acer chromebook laptop (CB5-571) After fresh install of Jessie I just can't seem to have any trace of the touchpad and by that I mean nothing in dmesg or /proc/bus/input/devices or even /var/log/Xorg.0.log is mentioning anything about any sort of touchpad device.
So being desperate I loaded live Xubuntu 14 and the touchpad worked just fine so after some checks it turned out that Xubuntu is using elan_i2c driver which I can't find anywhere.
Also I've tried loading the psmose module but that made no difference as I guess the HW is just not recognized by the system.

For some time now I have been unable to update flashplugin. I have been waiting the problem to fix itself, but no.

View 13 Replies View RelatedSince last Saturday (11-20) my touchpad enable/disable key stopped working.I don't make much use of the touchpad and it usually stays disabled most of the time so I can't be sure it is really on Saturday that I lost this functionality or maybe the day before (I'm positive it's not longer than that).Before that it worked flawlessly, now it's like a dead key (which is not broken by the way, tested on a live CD).In these past week I have been looking for quite some time for other users who might have experienced this problem after the update of two specific packages (console-data and keyboard-configuration) I had on the 20th and which made me think might have broken the key binding.Not finding anything at all and after having tried for said packages both newer versions from sid and previous known-to-have-worked-before versions from the install CD, I started thinking the problem was not there (I consequently restored the testing ones).
The days before this happened I tinkered a little bit with gpointing-device-settings and tpconfig (this last one was a simple tpconfig -i), but at this point I start thinking there might have been something else I've done, somewhere else I can't recall probably.
Oh, I forgot to mention that the touchpad still works flawlessly, I can enable/disable it through gconf (actually I made two handy shortcut to the "/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled" value), so it is not an issue of making it work, just the toggle key which on my laptop is a dedicated one (no Fn modifier) and anyway all the other special keys still work fine.I checked gnome-keybinding-properties and there is no action for the touchpad there, but I don't know for sure if there was one before (and I haven't been able to add one). Anyway in gconf I noticed a key in "/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/keybindings/touchpad" has the value "XF86TouchpadToggle", not sure if that means the keybinding exists or what.
What more can I add? What I'm here to ask now is some guidance on figuring out what I might have done wrong considering what I was able to tell you, but mostly, considering what I wasn't able to tell you and am not even aware to have done.
How do you disable startx in Jessie when it boots up? In Wheezy I just had to disable the gdm3 service. I also tried a few settings in grub, but it still starts.

Got the basic things working and noticed that - movement of touchpad results in moving of mouse pointer, which is correct, but - tapping on the touchpad does not simulate a click action. on my netbook I have a Debian unstable/sid system. A few days ago I did an apt-get (dist-)upgrade which I think also updated the X-Server. Since then my netbooks keyboard and touchpad are not working as soon as the desktop is started (I think gdm).
The Keyboard works during the Grub selection and also in recovery mode (Root Terminal), so I'm sure its not a hardware problem. Could it be that the X-Server unloads the kernel modules for those two devices?Also if I plug in a USB keyboard or mouce they are working.
I just installed Debian on my new VAIO VPCS13. It seems to be working for the most part, except it does not recognize my Synaptics touchpad at all.
I've had Ubuntu installed on this computer before and the mousepad worked fine. This being Debian on a new-generation computer, it makes me think that Debian just probably hasn't released the update yet.
I have a Acer emachine E732z laptop. I have installed debian squeeze gnome, but it is unable to play audio through laptop speaker. The (3.5mm)audio jack is working fine and I can play audio through it. I have also installed Linux mint, but no audio(in speaker and audio jack). There is no such problem in Windows7.

I have Debian Jessie 8 installed on a Acer 5733 Laptop. After I closed the screen, it goes sleeping, and when I open it, aleatory, it freezes. I don't have graphical interface, and the tty are not accessible. Specs online commonly describe the laptop as having BCM43142 but I ran "lspci -knn | grep -iA2 net" and the output says I have BCM43228. Not sure why there is that discrepancy but I am assuming the latter, BCM43228, is what is actually in my computer.
Anyway, I originally installed "broadcom-sta-common", "module-assistant", and "broadcom-sta-source", but that resulted in nothing happening so I think I am going to "apt-get purge" those and start over.
I know about the Debian wiki "wl" page but it only provides instructions up to Wheezy, not Jessie. And I read many previous threads but they often contain different instructions and mixed results, plus there are many moving parts here (kernel, OS, driver, packages) and the instructions seem to be changing over time.
I was thinking I'd install these:
1) firmware-realtek
2) wireless-tools
3) module-assistant
4) broadcom-sta-common
5) broadcom-sta-dkms
6) broadcom-sta-source
Does the order of install for those above packages matter at all? Do I need the kernel header or not and, if so, how do I use it? Are there any other packages I need? What is the process?

I have been using linux for about a year and have run into a new problem I am unable to solve. It started when I attempted to install some packages I needed to get VirtualBox to run VMs. I am on Jessie.
I am unable to install various packages, including gedit, aptitude etc. I do not think it is a problem with my sources.list as my laptop has the same sources.list and I am not encountering the same problems on it. Packages will not install any dependencies. -f install isn't doing anything for me.

Recently tried to make RAID1 on MBR partitions scheme on Debian Jessie - debian-8.1.0-amd64-DVD-1. The issue - I have unable to boot from second drive after grub-install /dev/sdb by any ways. RAID1 itself for / swap and home is fully functional. Decided to try the same thing on GPT, same story. How to boot from second drive on most recent Debian Branches?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to switch off 3d i.e. dri on my laptop to save power. There is a bug in the intel video driver that makes it generate excess wakeups and thus increase power consumption. I don't use 3d so this is very annoying.
I have tried modifying /etc/X11/xorg.conf to insert an "NODRI" option in the "Device" section and have commented out both of the "load dri" commands in the "Modules" section. No go. When I look in the xorg log, these changes are seen but not acted on. The system appears to have hardwired defaults set somewhere which are difficult to override. It appears to be a new issue because with Karmic one still had control with xorg.conf.
Just generally I don't like changes like this because it is not documented on the wiki where and how to change the defaults in Lucid. Linux was supposed to be easily configurable so IMHO this is a step backwards.
I'm using xfce, and the power manager settings, to only lock the screen when close, are not honored. The laptop suspends, no matter what, when closed. Is there a way to forcibily only allow xfce power manager to handle the close lid behavior?

Running aptitude offers to remove this 260+ packages, so I'm not happy with that.
Here's the thing:
- Debian boots normally
- I get the login screen
- Once my credentials entered, I see only the grey foreground of the login screen for a couple of seconds, then a black screen with a prompt for like half a second and then I'm back to the login screen. No error message, nothing.
When booting in recovery mode and use startx, it works fine (it's my setup at the moment). From there, if I start gdm3 (systemctl start gdm.service), I get the black screen with a prompt and I can do nothing, I have to shut down directly by pressing the button.I tried to add Debian-gdm user to the video group (even if I don't use nVidia drivers), to replace gdm by lightdm and even to remove any display manager but the issue is not solved.Here are some outputs:
