Ubuntu Multimedia :: Extracting Video From Camcorder

Mar 12, 2010

I've had this camcorder for a while, and my knowledge on them were little back years ago when we got it. Any ways the video is recorded on a tape that comes with it. If I had known then, I would have made sure it was recorded onto the SD card. Anyways there is this old video that I wanted to extract and I have Kino installed and have my camcorder connected to the computer with a firewire cable. Kino/Ubuntu does not seem to recognize an input. Though the camcorder does. Anyone know if there is something I'm supposed to do?

Debian Multimedia :: Very Slow Samsung Camcorder Video Playback ?

Jul 31, 2011

A relative of mine who uses Debian 6.0.2 has bought a Samsung HMX-H300 Camcorder which records videos in:

1. H.264 (MPEG4 part10/AVC) format

2. High Definition Video (HD-VIDEO)

3. Standard Definition Video.

I notice that the PC requirement for the camcorder's bundled software, apart from the usual Windows XP SP2/Vista/Windows 7, lists an Intel Core Duo 1.66 minimum CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce 8500 or higher or ATI HD 2600 series or higher.

My relative has an old Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.30GHz computer which only has an AGP GeForce FX 5200 but after copying the videos from the Memory Card to /home it is just about possible to play them using Totem Movie Player and VLC but, although the audio is OK the video is painfully slow or almost stationary.

Is there a way to view the videos recorded in these formats with this hardware? Can they be converted to another format? Or should he consider buying a better computer?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Desperate To Get Video Import Working In 1104?

Jun 1, 2011

I have been trying to get video import to work on Xubuntu 1104 for nearly 2 weeks without success. All I am trying to do is to drag video from my Sony Digital 8 Handycam via firewire onto my PC for safekeeping and editing.

- Installed Kino, then found it did not work because of a permissions error. Used gksudo to get around that then found it was giving me a firewire error..raw 1394 kernel not loaded or failure to. Did a load of research and de-blacklisted the ohci drivers. Also installed dvgrab to make sure this aspect worked ok

- Used the list command to determine that the PC could see the firewire card, all OK

- Went back, using gksudo, etc to drag the video files in, same error as before

- Went onto the Kino website [URL].. (seems not to be updated that much) and , again, de blacklisted the firewire drivers

- Went to the Ubuntu website and found this.[URL]...but none of that worked for me.

- Searched through the Ubuntu help forums, not yet found a solution that works for me. Installed Ubuntu studio to see if that worked, no joy. I am now at a complete dead end. I am simply trying to find a piece of software that plugs in, works first time without issues, and allows me to initiate video imports as outlined above. Is anyone able to help me resolve this problem please?

My only other option, if I can't solve this, would be to install a copy of Windows 7 on my machine and use e.g a Pinnacle product to solve the problem. That would be a major failure as I much prefer to do this using my current set-up.

Debian Multimedia :: Shotwell - Fail To Import Video With Correct Date

Jan 26, 2015

I'm on Debian Wheezy using Shotwell 0.12.3. I have a bunch of .MOV videos that I want to import to Shotwell. I choose import from folder and select copy pictures. The import proceeds and shotwell tells med the .MOV (and some .jpg:s) are imported. The pictures are imported with no problem and placed in an event 2014-10-19 as expected. But videos are placed in an event dated 2004-01-01 and not in 2014-10-19 where they belong. Obviously, Shotwell does not use the files last edit date. I though maybe there was some bad dates in the metadata and opened the files in both Totem and VLC player but concluded there is no such metadata available (as far as I can tell). So how does Shotwell determine the date for .MOV files? Where does 2004-01-01 come from? Seems random.

Then, I tried dragging all movies in Shotwell to the event where it really belongs. That is, where the recently imported photos got placed 2014-10-19. But instead of the videos beeing moved into that correct event, now all photos appears in the 2004-01-01 event.Undo that last step and close Shotwell. Then, instead I manually (in nautilus) copy the .mov files to the 2014-10-19 folder where the picures resides. Open Shotwell again which detects something happened and starts import the videos again. Unfortunatley they still show up in the 2004-01-01 event

Another wierd thing is if I manually (in nautilus) move the Shotwell 2004-01-01 folder away from the Pictures folder (out of reach for Shotwell). Then when I re-open Shotwell the event does not appear anymore - as expected. But If I try to once again import the videos, Shotwell tells me all videos are duplicates and does not import them!?! In other words, manually removing a folder from Shotwell mess up the database. And that database is obviously not used to populate the events tree in the gui.How do I get my video to appear in the correct event? Alternatively; is there a photo/video library in Debian that actually works?

Fedora :: Playing (Canon Camcorder) MTS Video Files

Jul 28, 2010

I just got a Canon Vixia HF 200 Camcorder. It stores data on an SD card. I was able without difficulty to copy the files to my Fedora 13 (64 bit) system. There are a bunch of .mts files in a Stream Folder, which I assume contain the videos I made. Some searching with google suggested mplayer might be able to play these videos. When I try that, I get an Mplayer 'boombox' icon playing the audio, but no video.

How to Get info about state of things at present with high definition video.and Linux? If necessary I can use the Windows software that came with the camera, but I would like to do as much as I can with Fedora. To start, I would like to play the videos and also to write them to a DVD which I can play on my DVD player, BlurRay if possible.

Software :: Video Editing Software That Will Export Back To Mini DV Camcorder ?

May 25, 2011

I usually use dvgrab to make an .avi file from the video on our mini dv camcorder and save it to my pocket drive.

Right now I edit this from the pocket drive in Windows 7 on my laptop with Sony's Vegas movie studio HD 9.0 I'm having issues with the laptop lately and with out bogging down in too many details I have to burn the edited video back to the mini DV tape and transfer speeds are causing me problems.

Is there a Linux video editing software that would let me export back to the camcorder? OpenShot doesn't seem to have that option and from what I remember of PiTiVi it doesn't either.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Using IEEE 1394 Card To Download From Camcorder ?

Oct 6, 2010

I have a Pinnacle IEEE 1394 card which according to Yast/Hardware Information seems to be installed and recognised correctly.

Trying to use Kino to download from a Camcorder via IEEE 1394 nothing happens and looking at Kino Preferences IEEE 1394 tab it tells me:

"The IEEE Subsystem is not responding. The raw 1394 module must be loaded, and you must have read and write access to /dev/raw1394."

I do not have an entry /dev/raw1394 on my system. Files libraw1394 and libraw1394-8 were installed by default(SUSE 11.3 64bit), and I have since installed any others offered which were libraw1394-8-32bit, libraw1394-devel, libraw1394-devel-32bit but to no avail.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 10.04 - Rhythmbox Will Not Import SMB Folders

May 27, 2010

I have Rhythmbox installed in 10.04 on a fresh install with all current updates. I have the FLAC and FAAD libs installed and gstreamer-plugins-ugly, plus the default set of plugins that come with Rhythmbox in 10.04. All my music is stored on a self-built NAS running FreeNAS and serving files over SMB. This NAS has been in use for more than 4 years and has worked flawlessly with all my Windows machines using Winamp as a music player frontend. I can mount the SMB chare in 10.04 and I have no trouble browsing my music files/folders on the NAS.

However, if I try to import the music stored on the NAS using Music > Import Folder... nothing happens in RB. Even dragging and dropping individual music files from a nautilus browser window does not work (nothing happens). Most of the files are FLAC with some MP3's. All music is organized as artistalbum racks. My music collection is a bit more than 16k songs (about 95% are ripped from my own CD's). All tracks are properly tagged. There are no error messages, just nothing happens when dragging tracks into the library or using the Import Folder menu item.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Banshee 2.0 Radio Station Did Not Import?

May 3, 2011

I just noticed Banshee is the new default player in Natty so I decided to move over my music and radio stations. The media import worked for my few mp3s (only have a couple on here) I have but my radio stations did not import. Since I mostly listen to the radio while on the computer (ipod when I am not), I bit the bullet and recreated all my radio stations by hand.

Most worked but a few of my favorites do not.BBC World Service did not work so I launched Rhythmbox since it is still installed and BBC and the other stations played fine.Searching around the net it looks like Banshee had problems with BBC before since it is an .asx type link but that was supposed to be fixed in one of the 1.x releases.I found Vermont Public Radio hosts BBC World in a different format but my other stations are out of luck unless I stick with RB for now.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Audacity Won't Import Sound-recorder Flac?

Mar 26, 2010

Background: I'm digitizing an old record. I used Sound Recorder to make FLACs of each side of the LP, and now I need to edit them down to individual tracks. I'm using the development version of Ubuntu 10.04.

Problem: Audacity ignores these FLAC files when I attempt to import or open them.

The FLAC files play if I hover the mouse over them in GNOME.

Audacity gladly imports FLAC files I ripped from CD last year (using Sound Juicer I think).

But when I try to do the same for my recorded FLAC files, nothing happens. I tried running audacity in a terminal window, and there is no additional output when I attempt the import. This comes out when I start it:

Code:
bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111)
bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111)
bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111)
bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111)
Expression 'stream->capture.pcm' failed in 'src/hostapi/alsa/pa_linux_alsa.c', line: 3653

Looking at the file properties, they're basically the same except the Juicer-generated file has values filled in for title, artist, album, year. They are all FLAC Stereo 44100 Hz. I thought it might be a file-size problem, so I made a 5-second test with Sound Recorder, and that also refuses to import.

So, why do only the ripped files work with Audacity?
