Dec 9, 2010Getting extremely frustrated. Downloaded MiniTube from Ubuntu Software Center and it doesn't work. Every attempt to view a video is met with "Fatal error: cannot open media source" What gives?

Aug 30, 2010trying to install the latest version of Minitube on my 64 bit Ubuntu 10.04 installation. I thought adding a PPA would let me upgrade from version 0.9 to the latest version but it didn't seem to work. So now I'm trying to install from source (I've never done this before so I'm a complete noob when it comes to compiling). I checked the install instructions in the source which reads:

To compile Minitube you need Qt >= 4.5 installed.On a Debian or Ubuntu system just type:
sudo apt-get install build-essential qt4-dev-tools libphonon-dev
Windows and Mac users can get the Qt libraries from:

Compiling on Linux is fairly easy. Just run:
qmake
and then
make
Beware of the Qt3 version of qmake! If things go wrong try running qmake-qt4 instead.
## Running
Just type:
./build/target/minitube
I installed the prerequisite packages,but just to be safe I wanted to run the ./configure command, but when I try to I get the "bash: ./configure: No such file or directory" message. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Also, based on what I've read, I should have to enter some kind of install command in order to install the compiled binary but the instructions make no mention of this.
Debian Multimedia :: No 3D With Radeon HD 4200, Open-source Drivers?
Feb 21, 2010I'm running a Squeeze system on a PC with an ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphics card. Until recently I had been using the fglrx drivers without difficulty, but a recent upgrade removed fglrx - apparently this is because ATI has yet to release drivers for Xorg 1.7. So I've switched to the open source driver (radeon), but am not getting any 3D acceleration - hence can't run desktop effects in either kwin or compiz. When I run "glxinfo | grep OpenGL" I get the following:
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.6.1
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
OpenGL extensions:
It's the software rasterizer that is the problem, I gather. After Googling for similar problems encountered by others, I've installed firmware-linux and firmware-linux-nonfree, but to no effect. All fglrx-* packages are purged. Does anyone have any other thoughts? (I don't currently have an xorg.conf file in use.)

Sep 26, 2010I've installed Minitube and all of needed gstreamer and photon plugins.
The program opens, I do a search and then click on a item I can see the gasgauge rolling as if the item is playing but there is no sound no video. And no error messages.
I'm running 1.1.1 maverick and have tied both 1.1 and 1.2 beta, with no avail.

I find mostly tips on how to use a cracked key. This is NOT what I'm looking for. If there is a way to make VidBlaster work on my system, great. If there is an open-source substitute.

I want to install the open source drivers instead to see if I can get better performance.
According to this site, I have to install the PPA to my software sources as instructed here. I've done that. But how do I actually install the open source drivers?

It's name ended with ++ and I can't remember anything else Basically, it was like StreamTransport but open source and multiprotocol capable. Can anybody help me find it again? I'd be open to alternatives too of course! My basic need is to rip anything being rendered by my video card.

My 4770 had basic 3d support out of the box with the open source radeon driver. My 5770 doesn't seem to (basic rendering only with no compositing), although this page suggests it does:

Is there anyone out there who is running a 5770 or knows how I can upgrade to a newer version of the open source driver? I'd rather not use catalyst (Id don't game with ubuntu) and I found the open source driver to be quite nice.
Debian :: Writing Open Source Java Applications?
Feb 13, 2010I always wanted to get into writing open source applications for debian. The only problem I ever saw was that I do not know C++ which seems to be the popular language to build applications. My expertise is Java and I think that java applications could run on debian just as good as C++ applications. What I do at work is write applications in java for unix systems so I think I porting my skills over to debian would not be a problem. I have not seen any applications in java on debian yet and thought people might have a problem with them. Is there any reason more java applications are not being written on debian? Also does anyone know of hand if there is any orphaned java application for debian. I had a look on this page but it is hard to know what language the application is written in. [URL]

Aug 23, 2011I have ATI Radeon HD 5650 (code name Redwood) on Ubuntu 11.04. And I have been experimenting with open-source and proprietary driver.
The problem with proprietary driver is bad 2D rendering when watching movies in VLC (and any other), because if vsync is off, video is tearing and when its on, the video seems to stutter (the background moves in steps, not smooth). I have tried open-source radeon driver and its far better, but that driver doesn't have 3D acceleration for playing games. I was trying to play Hive Rise, and with proprietary driver works great, but with open-source the game starts, but i don't see the interface (start game, options, etc.).
It seems that Mesa 7.10 (in Natty) doesn't have 3D support for this card, but Mesa 7.11 (in Oneiric) will have that. Is that correct? I just want to have good 2D performance with ability to play games.
Debian Installation :: GPU Overheating - ATI Open Source Driver Installed
Jul 17, 2010First of all I must say that I am new to Debian, but not newbie on Linux. I am the Arch Linux user too, and I managed to solve identical problem on Arch. So, as I want to try Debian I am facing the same problem again. Problem is that my GPU is overheating. I am using Ati open source driver. I installed it following the procedure on Debian wiki. On Arch I solved it with proprietary driver fglrx. I tried the same solution here but it doesn't work. So I am stuck with open source drivers.
The difference between Arch and Debian (fglrx vs. Ati open source) is 10 C degrees. Debian Ati open source is much hotter. And ofc I am facing the low battery life too, because of this. My laptop is using much higher energy consumption with open source driver (almost double). How can I check my energy consumption on Debian? I read about some xorg options. I tried it, but no effect. As I am on Debian testing I am using kernel 2.6.32. Does this kernel supports xorg video energy consumption options?

Reboot after "apt-get install firmware-linux-nonfree", the system automaticly reboot after grub, then went black screen forever (no tty1,tty2.., seems cannot booting). I reinstalled serveral times but same problem (having tried both cd/live dvd, debian8.1/8.2).
It seems that "firmware-linux-nonfree" is the cause, since debian crashed once firmware-linux-nonfree installed.
The problem went away by installing ATIProprietary driver("[URL] ....").
PC is dell 9020, i7

Feb 18, 2010Just wondering if this is possible? Total n00b with linux, this is my *thinking* 3rd week using Ubuntu 9.10. And I am using my system for surfing the web, listen to music, video`s and chatting. And I got the "funny" tough`t of trying to maybe play World of Warcraft again on this computer. Yes I have run it before when I had XP and W7 on it. The w7 experience on this computer was a bad mistake. So yeah, the thing I am really wondering on is this: Wine, WoW with WoTLK ( Wrath of the Lich King ), with the newest Open Source ATI graphic driver?[URL].. According to that page (you have to Ctrl-F and "Open source ATI drivers" to find the what I mean ) it is possible, but I am wondering on how to do it?[URL].. and been reading on different sites that you can play games with wine in a new X. Curious on how that can be done, and if that MAYBE is the best thing to do with my Wow game. Havent installed it YET, thinking of downloading the web installer after this post. If the moderators should find this is the wrong place for this to be asked, move it to the "Wine" section, if its better placed there.

Jul 11, 2014I've set up this new PC, the graphic card I picked is the ATI R7 260X, pretty good card with lots of core processors, high clock and 2GB memory. I'm now currently using the 14.4 catalyst drive, it works actually alright, though, there are some mishaps with this driver:
First my hdmi screen had scale down, leaving black borders around, even though the catalyst control said the correct native resolution, this turned out to be a underscan that fglrx does and I've finally managed to fix it. Other caveat is that the screen simply won't suspend or turn off( via software), DPMS actually works, forcing it turns the screen blank for some seconds but something does not allow the screen to sleep.
Performance wise it seems pretty good though, everything is pretty smooth, being able to play games maxed out on resolution and ultra settings, though, I still haven't tested out that many games.
The open-source radeon on the other hand, well its open-source, fully xorg and linux compatible, which is a major plus point. It seem it has come a long way, supporting lot of features and providing better performance in some cases.
Before installing Catalyst I had issues with mesa and steam, steam would complain about not finding the 32bit libraries, this is however a steam runtime issue, maybe it could already be fixed.

Being linux, one should in principle get the source codes for everything that has been precompiled (except the proprietary drivers such as nvidia) in the installation DVDs/CDs. Where are the source codes ? Is there a place I can download them ?
To avoid confusion, I am not referring to the kernel source that can be compiled to give a linux kernel, but that does not include the drivers, such as intel_drv.so.
To be more specific, the intel graphic i810 driver has been built into any linux system, but where is the exact source? One answer may be that primary source intellinuxgraphics.com. However, if anyone tries to download the every changing (i.e., keep updated almost every single day) driver source codes from freedesktop.org, it is almost certain that the source codes will not be the same as the one that is finalized in Fedora 10.

It all seems to work, however debuild gave an error about secret keys. Is this a sensible procedure? What happens in the (probably unlikely) event there is another source patch?I've gone to a tiling window manager as the result of the purchase of a wide screen LCD monitor. I like to have some stuff down the right hand side when running Firefox and OpenOffice in the main panes. Any configuration tricks welcome. Modern screens are the wrong shape!
Debian Multimedia :: Can't Access Real Media?
Aug 15, 2010I'm using 32 bit (i686) Debian Lenny. The multimedia repo is installed, w32codecs is installed, VLC and Kaffeine are both installed. I was trying to listen to some audio files on the NPR site (link will follow) and find that I can't open the files with anything I have installed. The Linux version of the Realplayer isn't in the repo (and I don't really want to install it after some of the things I've read about it) but I gotta have my NPR and there's no way I'll EVER go back to a M$ OS. How can I listen to these files without downloading them and then uploading them to a media conversion site? I'm usually very good with google but this one has me stumped.
