I upgraded some libraries, restarted Debian stable (Jessie)'s kdm.service, but stuck in black console with no X. "startx" fails to launch it. How do I relaunch KDM without rebooting my old desktop computer?
View 14 RepliesJust need some quick direction with this, as I have no idea where to begin:I run irssi in screen, and have a simple script that uses notify-send when I am private messaged/hilighted/etc. It works fine, and makes KDE pop up notifications like any other stuff does. However, if I restart KDE with /etc/init.d/kdm restart, the script fails with (every time it is triggered):
Restarting irssi doesn't fix this, the entire screen session has to be dismantled. Is there a way to fix this, or at least a place to start? It's a perl script, but I have no idea where to begin. I guess on a high level, some sort of ID is changing, but is still referenced by screen?
All my panels and desktop and wallpaper disappeared. I don't know how to get them back without restarting KDE4. I have too many things open. I can't right click the desktop > appearance settings and I don't know what to input into alt+F2 to get that system settings menu. Any ideas?

Specifically, after upgrading my Debian system to Squeeze a few days ago, sound is completely lost. This means that I cannot hear any sound from anywhere (mp3, streming videos or anything else) except the system bell . I've done a research on the Internet, looking in other forums and discussions but still, nothing works for me. To begin with, I'm running Squeeze in an HP laptop with HDA Intel soundcard and chipset ALC268. When I'm running aplay -l I get this message:

I upgraded my system from Wheezy to Jessie and now the audio is tinny. It sounds like a lot of the bass is being chopped off. This happens in YouTube's HTML5 video player, VLC and whatever player it is that Thunar launches for avi files.I'm using Xfce as my desktop, if that matters.I looked around for an equalizer app for pulseaudio but was surprised to find that the there isn't one, or at least not one which is still maintained.
View 0 Replies View RelatedPrevious X was 1.4.2. After aptitude upgraded X Window to 1.7.7, startx crashed complaining: XKB could not find /usr/share/../rules/evdev file. There is no evdev file.
How do I modify xorg.conf to work with evdev? I spent few hours to figure out evdev. It seems it's new style of managing input devices in X Window. The information isn't friendly to migrate from old to this.
When I put Option "AutoAddDevices" "off" in ServerLayout section, it literally froze X Window. X started without mouse/keyboard control. I had to turn off power switch. Now, I can't use X at all unless I move back to 1.4.2.
I had a broken URL in my /etc/apt/sources.list file, apparently because the debian-multimedia.org site had some kind of server issue and they had to rebuild the site from the ground up. They must have changed their directory structure, because I began getting 404 Errors when upgrading packages. I eventually fixed the URL last week after it had been broken for three months, then I upgraded and rebooted. After that, sound stopped working, even system sounds. My speakers work, because I plugged them into another machine and they worked. I eventually discovered that the master volume was set to "mute", and so was the master volume in the alsamixer. However, even after changing it to 100% for both, sound still doesn't work. I even made sure to issue a "alsactl -store" command toeep the settings there after a reboot. I removed and reinstalled all the alsa and pulse audio packages, made sure that the emu10k1 driver was installed for my Soundblaster Audigy card, and made sure everything was unmuted. I have also tried a million other things that I've found on Google, but nothing seems to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading to Jessie (AMD64) I have a totally blank screen, not even a blinking cursor. The video card is a GeForce 6200 and I have nouveau loaded. I originally had an nvidia module in Wheezy. I decided to use the instructions at the Debian NvidiaGraphicsDriver wiki to install the NVIDIA legacy package. That was worse. The nvidia module was unloaded in the X.org log, and the screen presented as a login console.
I tediously removed all NVIDIA components, and reverted to nouveau since its report in X.org log says it supports GeForce 6 series cards. That brought me back to a totally blank screen. The nouveau module lists as "video" doing lsmod. Both gdm3 and the X server processes are up and running. Other than reporting that "nv" couldn't be loaded, there is nothing in X.org log that appear abnormal. The .xsessions_error log is troubling however, but I don't have the knowledge to interpret.
I do not know which is the right way/proper way to restart an X server. The Debian shows tells the following :- [url]

I had Vista loaded on my computer, then loaded the BRILLIANT ubuntu onto a second partition! This gave me the GRUB boot loader which is fine.My 2 points are;1. Can I change the position of the items in the GRUB loader so if no keys are pressed it loads Windows automatically?? (Its for my sons computer!!) Also can I edit the GRUB so its less complicated for him??2.I want to update his Windows to Win 7, free upgrade! This over rights the Win partition and will therefore get rid of my GRUB loader. When I have updated how can I get back the ability to chose between booting Win 7 and Ubuntu?? How do I get the GRUB back?
View 3 Replies View Related I could not get the hardware to work with Lenny's ancient drivers, so I gave up and decided to upgrade to Squeeze.Well, the hardware works (except sound), but KDE4 is a such a disaster that I want to run not walk! all the way back to Lenny. I'm stunned that after four years of active development, this desktop still doesn't have something as basic as keyboard shortcuts or the ability to place icons where YOU want them.
The widgets frustrate me to no end. The new K menu is impossible to navigate. I'd rather hang myself than use Dolphin as a file manager. KDE4 gives me more notifications than MS Windows' crapware. And it's UGLY !!! The "Oxygen" theme makes me want to tear my eyeballs out.

View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I was using AntiX, I liked how I could just type "xlock" in a terminal and it would lock the screen until I came back and typed my password. I saw that there was no "xlock" package, so googling around, I saw it was replaced with xlockmore and xlockmore-gl, neither of which there seems to be a package for in the Squeeze repositories. I tried xscreensaver, but I prefer the simplicity of xlock (and I like that it doesn't leave a daemon runnig when not in use). Is there a way to safely install it, or should I just be looking for an alternative?

I have read a number of posts but none seem to be specific to my situation. My monitor is a Samsung synchmaster 205BW. xserver-xorg-video-nv is installed as is xserver-xorg-video-nouveau.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've been setting up a Lenovo Thinkpad T420i and have gotten most of the kinks worked out, except for the fact that the display has some annoying artifacts as you navigate around, I guess due to bad video support. A post [URL].. on the same machine said that upgrading all X packages to sid (unstable) fixed these problems, but those packages aren't available in stable.
I read another post (can't find the link now) that said Debian wasn't planning on backporting all the X packages, only related libraries and modules. And I don't know which ones specifically would fix the issues I'm having.
So I thought I'd ask what my options are. I could update all those to unstable, but that doesn't seem optimal (and in the future I don't want unstable bugs bringing down my whole X session). Is there a way to find out what I need and backport some myself. Or do I just need to wait until the appropriate packages filter down to stable (or at least backports)?
Since upgrading to 10.10 from 10.04, I've had a lot of sound problems. So, I completely wiped and realoaded Kubuntu 10.10 64bit today. COMPLETELY reloaded from nothing. code...
I did check KMIX and the default sound is the X-FI. I'm not using any special ATI drivers, just whatever Kubuntu decided to choose for me at install/boot.
Hardy Heron includes ALSA 1.0.15 but I need at least 1.0.16 to make VMWare player happy with it. I couldn't find the packages in backports, but maybe I missed it.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to KDE 4.4.3 this morning, but after that Amarok (with Xine backend) does not play music any more - track is progressed, but only silence comes out of the speakers. I tried Gnome music players too, but none of them plays anything.
I installed GStreamer with different kinds of plugins and switched Phono backend to gstreamer. When I start Amarok now, it says I have no MP3 support, so it has to be installed. It does it, restarts itself and it can play audio again. After restarting, having no MP3 support is reported again.
I need to upgrade Pulseaudio to a version better than 0.9.14 (i.e. at least 0.9.15) in order to get the Pulseaudio plugin in Blueman to work, but despite following these instructions to add the PPA it will not be upgraded!

View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 from 9.10 and there's now a strange high-pitched crackling distortion sound whenever I play any kind of sound with any program, which seems to stop and start at random. My sound card is an SiS SI7012, and the sound was working perfectly before I upgraded.I'm not sure whether this is a problem with Pulseaudio or ALSA or what. I tried removing all of the Pulseaudio packages, but that didn't help, and I also tried doing 'remove completely' on all of the Pulseaudio and ALSA packages and then reinstalling, but that didn't work either

I'm not sure if this is the right spot for this pst or not, first on this forum. I just removed Fedora Core 4 from my system and installed Debian Sarge with the 2.6 kernel. I'm a newbie. The install seemed to go fine, after it was done I actually logged in and looked around some. I then restarted to check to make sure that my boot process went ok and I could still get to windows. Worked fine. Then I tried to boot back into Debian. It hung. I rebooted and tried again. Hung again in the same spot.
