I updated Debian system yesterday. I am getting black screen after I execute startx command. I am using system as server and manually boot into GUI mode whenever required.

View 13 Replies View RelatedI installed backtrack4 (ubuntu based) few hours ago and i am facing a problem in getting into the graphical mode(live cd)!, hence I tried to check and run it in a "safe graphical mode" and unexpectedly it works fine! but when I switch to 1024x768 resolution in the same live cd ,and then when I type startx it just produces a black screen! After doing some research on finding a soultion to this problem I found out that this go to do some thing with editing the xorg.conf file! but when I type xorgconfig,it shows an error saying command not found!
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg command just talks about the keyboard!
nothing interesting on graphics or screen section!

How to modify the xorgconfig file.
I left slackware 13 with airodumb and airplay executed in console for 6 hours. When I got back, konsole had something similar to "packet has length error". I could open the packet using aircrack -m option, but when i shut down the OS, it didnt shut down properly. Now when I do startx black window stays forever. I tried pkgtool and change to KDE but the same happens.

I get black screen with blinking button on monitor and keyboard. Obviously KDE doesn't start.
I put Slackware 13 and the scenarios is:
1. I start the computer and after startx I got black screen, the keyboard is not responding the led of the display is yellow etc. Now I reset the computer,
2. Booting Windoze
3. Choose Restart not Shutdown from Windoze
4. Booting Slack
5. startx works fine, the X server is starting and working great.
I have Radeon 9500. I configured X server with 3D accel over 2500 FPS on glxgears. The same problem persists even with X server VESA configured.
I'm having a pretty serious problem, whenever I try to boot into Ubuntu the screen goes black, I see a flash of purple or violet and then i get a prompt asking for my login credentials, afterwards I'm stuck with a terminal trying to start the gui... I don't know what I'm doing wrong, fresh install tried to reboot after getting the display driversinstalled idk if that could be a problem. I tried to commands in the terminal already:
startx
sudo service gdm start

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running debian (AMD64 dist), and I recently upgraded via aptitude to KDE 4.3.4.After the upgrade I found that I could no longer start X (using startx from my user account).I am, however, able to launch kdm from a root command line and log in as a user to X this way (graphically).I want to run startx as a user and I cannot figure out where the hangup is. I've looked in my Xorg.0.log files comparing .old to current and nothing stands out. After I launch 'startx' the screen goes black and the computer waits. I can hit ctrl-alt-f2 and bring back the text-mode terminal screen; it's at a point where it looks like X is working. From there, I can control-c it and get back to the command prompt.
I'm thinking this is a software configuration thing but I don't know enough about how all the systems tie together to figure out where the problem is.

I thought I'd look into methods of recovering from a lost password for future use, how to change the passwd and shadow should I need to. So I started an X session, vi'd my .swp files then logged off. Perhaps I changed one of these files accidentally, but my intent was just to view them which I did. After starting up my computer the next day and logging in I began an X session - "startx". The session appears to have started, but with a black screen and an active mouse cursor.
Just installed CentOS 5.5 in text mode because the GUI mode keeps hanging midway installation. The text mode installation worked sucessfully but when the installation finished and rebooted the system i got the localhost login thing which i typed root and provided my password,logged in successfully but then the cursor was just blinking waiting for the next command, i then typed startx but immidiatelythe screen goes blank and hangs. I guess the problem has to do with vga but i'm newbie and don't knw what next to do.

Few days after installing Ubunto 9.10, during installation of gstreamer, the installation utility got stuck, and with it the whole desktop icons. (I think the gstreamer has nothing to do with it). When I tried to execute some icon, like the terminal, it will not open. After restarting the computer, I get a tty1 login terminal and not the graphical one (tty7). When pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7, nothing happens. It switches to a black screen. "sudo startx", gives some error log. I already reinstalled the X-server, ubuntu desktop and other stuff.
What can be the problem? Is it related to my video card (nvidia 7600 GT)? I didn't install any nvidia specific driver. This happened to me earlier and I reinstalled Ubunto. I think maybe I should move to some other distribution.

View 7 Replies View Relatedi have an installation of wheezy 7.8 i think. i was facing difficulties in read of matroska video. therefore have decided to installer gstreamer1.0 wich should be resolve my problem. i have added the backports repository in apt sources list. after an apt-get update i launch apt-get install gstreamer1.0 . i have noticed it have starting downloading more file than it needs i concluded that it was a upgrade or something like because the kernel was also updated. after the the packet downloading it has started the installation with some errors related to LOCALE LCC. it has stopped and restarted some services wich is normal. i have closed all others apps and restarted. Here start the hell. after the restart i have passed the kde login screen and after BLACK SCREEN with mouse working.

What i have tried? i have rename the /home/jefcolbi/.cache and back it again, rename /home/jefcolbi/.kde and back it again. next i have tried to check the Xorg config file. i created a new one with X -configure, modified it to feet my system configuration this does not resolve the problem but add another the keyboard is not working in graphical mode.

I have a problem with my computer running debian testing with kde. When after a while I'm away form keyboard my screen turn off for power saving, but I cannot in any way turn it on again.
I tried moving mouse, pressing some key, Ctrl + Alt + Del, Ctrl + Alt + BackSpace, Ctrl + Alt + Esc, and also Ctrl+Alt+F1/2/ecc.. No way. I had to reset my computer every time.
I am new to Linux and installed Debian. After the Installation I started Debian and ended in a black screen. I came out there changing to a terminal (ctrl+alt+F1) but I dont know how to get Xorg running. I am running Jessie 8.2 by the way.
Yesterday I done an upgrade with apt and since that time whenever I boot up I am presented with only a blank screen and an unresponsive cursor. I cannot switch console using Ctl+Alt+F*. The only thing I can do is Alt+SysRq+(R,E,I,S) which kills gdm3 and gets me back to the console.
* I can get into Xorg fine via the startx command
* As a temporary fix, if I enable automatic login (via /etc/gdm3/daemon.conf) then gdm3 works.
But I can't get the normal authenticated login screen to work.

One other thing worth noting, before upgrading yesterday, I changed mirrors and accidentally pasted in "stable" into /etc/apt/sources.list. So basically I did an initial upgrade, realised my mistake, switched back to testing (which I was on before) and done another upgrade, which is when I noticed this problem.
After applying upgrades to debian 8.2 on a lenovo yoga3 notebook and a reboot I am not able to login into my GNOME desktop. The login screen stays black. If I press the power button to suspend I can see the login screen with default background for ~1 second before it turns black again. What can I do to fix this issue? Is there a way to login via terminal and do a rollback? Can I use my home folder an personal settings if i reinstall debian and keep the /home partition?
View 14 Replies View RelatedSo I'm pretty awful at keeping Debian up to date, I guess. I'm using cron-apt to fetch updates every night, then apply them whenever I get around to it. Well, I neglected that last part for a month or two, and after some routine downtime to clear the case of dust, I decided it was time to upgrade. So I ran the command, everything checked out fine, and I was on my merry way. Until a half-hour ago when I accidentally shutdown the computer (I use the same zsh prompt on each computer, so I got them confused.) I turned it back on, only to be greeted with a black screen after all the services started up.
Everything works: ircd, MPD, etc. EXCEPT, of course, X. At first I thought the update broke SLIM, but after checking htop and doing a killall slim, it doesn't appear to be running (the screen remains black.) I hit Control-Alt-f2 to get to get back to a terminal, then tried doing startx, which freezes the computer entirely. All the network services stop, I can't SSH in, etc. It's dead. If I'm not mistaken, Xorg.0.log should say something, but I'm not a huge expert on it. The last line isn't an error, I can tell you that. So what's the deal here? apt-get remove xorg and start over?
I recently came to Debian. As I have an ati card, I tried the proprietary drivers first, but then came back to radeon (open-source). In the process, I think I may have broke my xorg.conf . Sometimes, when the monitor goes into sleep mode, when I came back, the screen remains black (sometimes I see just the cursor).

Also, I have lots of backups in my X11 folder, like xorg.conf.fglrx-3, xorg.conf.original-1, or backup.xorg.conf. Is it safe to remove them? What should I do about the main xorg.conf?
I'm running Debian Squeeze on a Dell Studio 1558 laptop, and I have my laptop set to suspend when my lid is closed. Resuming from suspend seems to work but the screen remains blank, forcing me to hard reboot every time. Upon reading this thread:

I have been able to log into a tty[1-6] as root or my user, and then startx -- :1, while logged in as myuser and running X on tty7, , but this somehow skips my default desktop manager (GDM3) and boot straight into LXDE (with no menus!). In /etc/X11/default-diplay-manager I have: /usr/sbin/gdm3 ? How do I get startx -- :1 to start a desktop manager?
Related 2nd question: When I did the above startx -- :1, it would start the X session in the same tty (e.g. tty2) where I was logged in when running the startx command. It used to be (in older Linux versions) that startx -- :1 would start an X session on tty8 (and the default would be :0 on tty7). Is this the (new) way things are supposed to work?
I tried to install NVIDIA drivers to my asus computer . When I rebooted startx did not launch.

Since doing a "full-upgrade" using the testing repositoriesotice that before an application can display its window, I get a frame with a black background for anything up to a second. I run a PC with 4 cores of 2.4 GH each.What could be the reason for this annoying behaviour?

However, seems I couldn't launch desktop environment by simply typing startx on console as on FreeBSD. I can start desktop through a display manager like lightdm on Stretch, which is quite easy and straightforward, but I still prefer the "startx way".
I setup Debian Stretch on Virtualbox (4.3.43) using official debian-installer, login as a normal user, and install xfce4 via Code: Select allsudo apt-get install xfce4. The installation of xfce4 was very fast and it also introduced xorg related packages here. Then I edit my $HOME/.xinitrc as follows:

I typed startx to expect Xfce desktop but got the errors complained instead: [URL]....
while the xorg.0.log had the following contents: [URL]....
So, I failed to start xfce4 by startx as a normal user and had to install and start lightdm to go into desktop, but when I login as root, it worked and launched Xfce4 by startx without any problem. I couldn't figure it out now.
I use Debian Squeeze and I have the following desktop environment installed: fluxbox, lxde, openbox and icewm. I make login in text mode and I start X using startx command manually in terminal. When I do that, fluxbox is loaded, because my ~/.xinitrc is configured this way:

And "%session" is the variable value (fluxbox/lxde/openbox/icewm) chosen during the graphical login. This script works with Slim, but I want to login in a non-graphical mode. Could I use this script somehow to do a non-graphical login using startx? Is there some way that I could run startx with some parameter that it would pass the "%session" value to .xinitrc?
