Red Hat / Fedora :: Resizing Root Partition - Applications Disappeared?

I joined the fedora irc channel and asked how to delete a partition. We actually decided that we could not delete the partition I wanted to delete because it was a root partition. After unmounting the partition, and one other partition with a really long directory name, all of my applications disappeared. I need a safe surefire way to resize a root partition. I don't want to unmount anything because we don't know if we'll be able to mount it again.

when i have installed fedora 14 from the live CD....i noticed fedora give 4.9 GB SWAP partion:mad and give the root another 4.9 GB.... every time i monitor the swap is free cuz my RAM is 3 GB.... I want resize my root and take the space from the SWAP and give the SWAP only 1 GB... im worried that i miss up with system.... any clean graphical interface recommend me...? or any clean way to resize..?

Is there a way where I can take like 50GB from my home folder (I have 375 avail., but using only 22GB) and put it to the root partition? Twice now my system has almost ran out of space on root, so luckly I was able to clear out old stuff so I don't have login issues after finding the hardway the first round lol. I just want to make sure I can login with out being forced back out because root don't have space to let me login.

I installed 11.4 (64 bit) and all went amazingly smooth. I created three logical partitions (boot, swap and home in this order) and an extended partition with root and backup. Just prior to the installation, my external backup drive went belly up so I created a 40 gig partition to "fill in" the backup duties until I purchased a new one. I got it and set it up and then deleted the 40 gig backup partition thinking I would just add the now unallocated space to the root partition but alas it was not meant to be. I can't resize the root partition while it's mounted and I can't unmount it and have a working system. The 40 gigs of space is sitting right next to root (no having to jump or resize other partitions to combine the two). Is there a way to do this or did I just waste 40 gigs worth of real estate.

I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop i386 using "Install inside Windows" option. In the installation i dedicated 3GB for the root parition. Now i have a Windows 7 and a Ubuntu.
Currently, I need more space for the Ubuntu root parition (just 50MB freespace remained!). I realized the it is a simple 3GB file in the Windows and root parition is virtually in that file.
So it should be possible to increase the size of the root parition. But i cannot find any way for this.
I do not want to reinstall the my Ubuntu or add another partition. Is there any painless way to just increase the size of root parition?

I am new to linux and have installed fedora 12 on my system. The partition sizing which I had done is :
- 17 gb
home- 8 gb
mp -1gb
usr -2gb
Boot -200mb
swap - 4gb (I have 2 gb RAM)
all partitions of ext4 format.
I would like to know that whenever I am going to install any new software or packages then it will be installed in which folder or partition? I have only 170 mb space free in user and have not installed any thing yet. Do I need to resize it. If yes, then how can I do so?

I have been using Ubuntu for about a year and I decided to switch to Fedora just to see how it goes with getting everything in my system working again. I would say that with Ubuntu and Fedora installations I have installed and reinstalled 15 times, which I mention because I am not new to installing linux. I have used GParted to partition and resize my HD numerous times and reinstalled linux on a partition and so on. I know how to do all of that without any problems.
NOW HERE IS WHAT HAPPENED... I installed Fedora on my Desktop which I had partitioned into a 190 GB partition onto which Windows is installed and then I had another 30 GB partition onto which I chose to install Fedora. I chose the "replace existing Linux systems" in anaconda... and what resulted was a 30 GB partition with Fedora that is now showing up as LVM. I have never seen an LVM partition and I am not sure if I can use GPARTED to resize it without destroying it. I have used GPARTED to resize Linux partitions before, but they were never showing up as LVM. The forums on GPARTED only show info from about a year or two ago.
Here is what I want to do (and reading around on forums doesn't really give a good explanation of whether it is possible)... Is it possible to install Linux Mint into that 30 GB Fedora LVM partition by just resizing the Fedora part of the volume? So, the question is this: How can I resize the Fedora part of the LVM volume and then install Mint into that LVM partition?
If Fedora was on an ordinary 30 GB partition I would have no problem with using GPARTED to chop that in half and then use the 15 GB I freed up to install Mint. I just don't want to destroy the Fedora stuff by messing around the with the LVM partition so I would like to hear from others who have worked around this issue and please don't link to the ordinary LVM howto's you get through a simple google search as I have already read them and I don't find them too illuminating.

I have decided that my partition table does not meet my needs Barrymore, and I want to shrink the "/" partition by 80GB, and then create another file system on that space. I did some research on-line, and I'm not sure which way is the easiest and more secure way to perform the change with out putting the "/" file system on risk.

I've got a big problem. Earlier this afternoon I tried to unlock my screen, but the password dialog didn't appear (the background did, and I could move the pointer, but no dialog). So I restarted the computer, only for the Fedora bootup icon to get about 3/4 of the way full before the screen blanked out and I got the message "Boot has failed. Sleeping forever." I booted into the liveCD and opened the system installer to see if maybe I could just reinstall the system in place while leaving my data intact. When I got to the partitioning stage, my old partition layout was there...except one LVM volume group was totally missing. And this is the volume group that contained my / and /home, among other things. Another volume group sitting on a different RAID was still there, but ironically it was the one for short-term data.
I have three hard drives, using soft RAID and LVM. Each drive is split into 4 partitions. The first partition of each is part of a RAID-1 where /boot sits. The second of each makes up a RAID-5 on which sits my "Main" volume group for my important data (this is the one that has gone AWOL). The third of each makes up a RAID-0 on which my "Volatile" volume group sits (for /tmp, /var/tmp, and the like). The fourth is swap.
Is there any chance I can restore my volume group so my data can be recovered? I'm not sure if I've got the full layout with volume sizes written down anywhere.

I am having a problem when I try to run certain programs as root via the terminal (this problem mainly occurs when I try to run a GUI application).
Before installing F14, running gedit as root was never a problem and I always did it when modifying system files. But in F14 it seems to be a problem. Here's what I run...

What I want to do is enlarge both my root partition by about 10 GB and also enlarge my Home partition by about 45 GB. I realize there is enough space in the root partition for expansion (see screen shot) but I want to be certain (some of the last updates have been over 100 MB). I have a dual boot 10.10 64 bit system with XP . There are two drives ; a 1 TB drive with Windows, Ubuntu and a NTFS data partition and a 2 TB drive for media which won't be touched by this operation. I have taken about 58 GB from my Windows partition and this now sits unallocated and ready to be used to expand the Ubuntu partitions. expanding these partitions (root and home) would be appreciated. I read bodhi.zazen' excellent tutorial on partitioning [URL] but I still am unsure how to go about this. I have a live Meerkat CD.

USB flash disk partition disappeared as well as partition table I'm not sure about the cause

Now however its not letting me resize the Windows partition, mounted or unmounted. It currently occupies the whole disk. I would rather not reinstall the whole thing over again, but I will if I have to. Isnt there an easy way to shrink a Windows partition? I swear Ive done this before and it wasnt this hard. Could it be a problem with the Mint installer that now asks me if I want to unmount my disks before it goes into install mode? On this PC I would like to have

I know there are probably alot of threads about lvm however they aren't addressing my problem. I want to extend the PEs available in a VG. This VG already has LVs and those are active and mounted. From what I read from the manpages of pvresize this should be perfectly possible.

pvresize resizes PhysicalVolume which may already be in a volume group and have active logical volumes allocated on it.
I did the following steps and wonder if anyone has the same issue. THe machine where I am talking about is an ESX VM.
1. Resized the vmdk in ESX (+1G)
2. Let the kernel reread the device geometry: echo 1 > /sys/block/sdc/device/rescan
3. fdisk shows me the new size... so far so good
4. I resize the partition using fdisk (remove, recreate) and gave it the 8e type (lvm)
5. wrote config to disk
6. executed partprobe
7. pvresize /dev/sdc
Here it goes wrong! Pvresize says in the verbose output it sees the same size however at the end it says the pv has been resized. I have seen when I put volumes "offline" using vgchange -a n vg on a test machine, and then try pvresize it seems to work ok. This is against what is in the manual as it says pvresize should work on online mounted volumes.

my problem is that the Applications menu is empty and Preferences and Administration no longer appear under the System menu.I'm running 11.04 and I use Ubuntu Classic because I prefer the GNOME interface. The other day I was trying out various audio/multimedia players so I was installing and uninstalling several programs with the Software Center.
I started to play a CD in Audacious when the system crashed. The screen went dark but the computer kept running. I ended up doing a hard reset. Everything booted up normally and everything seems to run fine except my GNOME menu is messed up. The Applications menu is empty and Preferences and Administration no longer appear under the System menu. (I realize I can get to these through System Settings but I want the menus back) Furthermore alacarte will not run so that I can edit the menu contents.
I've tried using one of the old menu versions in /home/dan/.config/menus but they are all outdated and I cannot edit them. It also doesn't bring back Preferences and Administration.I've tried reinstalling alacarte and that doesn't do anything.I've tried using other panel programs like Docky and AWN but I have the same menu problem.I also tried resetting the panels to defaults but that doesn't fix the problem.

I didn't like the fact that Ubuntu allocated like 5gigs of swap with its automatic partitioning / install. So I decided to shrink it with gparted now it doesn't show up when I boot I have to select swap on in gparted to use it.

I have slackware 13.1 installed on my desktop and I have all my hard drive dedicated to it. But now Im thinking about resizing my hard drive so that I can install windows so my brother can play games on it ( probly giving 50 Gigs to windows )I heard that parted ( located on slackware cd 1 ) is what I should use. So I was wondering if I need to backup any important files before doing the resizing? I would also appreciate it if someone could link an good tutorial for doing partition resizing .

I had some problems about a week ago with installing Python2.6-minimal (as an issue, it got resolved), however, after the problem was resolved, 'Add/Remove Applications' disappeared after upgrade was complete. I usually do not use this program for installing, etc., if I can help it, but do use it more often for web address reference when I am considering installing a new program, etc. Question is,is there some way to find out if it is merely lurking somewhere in my system... & then to once again add it to my menu list? Or, if that is not the case, to reinstall it via apt-get, aptitude, or some way like this? I could not find this application (or whatever it is called) in the Synaptic Package Manager.

I have Debian and Virtual Box with another Debian. I have resized max size of vdi file with VBoxManage modifyhd but now I need to resize partition on virtual machine's system. I've downloaded GParted and I can run machine from this ISO as CD. Partition is encrypted on machine.Unfortunately GParted doesn't start with X so I have to use it in terminal. I can see partitions:

So I check my internet connection. VirtualBox has 'attached to NAT' and before I run out of space on virtual machine, Debian could access internet. So it's only something about this GParted. I have modified /etc/resolv.conf with vi (even vim is not available). And it has two valid nameservers. I haven't restarted anything, as I'm not sure if I need to, after modifying resolv.conf file.But even in that case I cannot ping anything from GParted:

Today I was messing around with my partitions, and I decided to shrink my main partition that had Windows on it, so that I would could have one big storage partition and then a Windows 7 one and a Ubuntu one. Well, it didn't really work so I decided just to wait for Lucid to come out and start with a fresh install. So I went into EASEUS Partition Manager and resized my main Windows 7 partition back to its normal size. It had to reboot and did its stuff, and then when I restarted my computer, grub was showing the grub rescue> thing. So I went into the Windows 7 recovery disk, and tried all the BootRec.exe options. None of those worked. So I decided to go to the extreme and just delete Ubuntu completely.
I deleted the entire partition with GParted and then resized the main partition all the way. Then I booted into a Ubuntu live usb and re-installed Ubuntu. I thought it would just reinstall Grub and I would be able to get to both Ubuntu and Windows 7. It did install Grub, but now I can only boot into Ubuntu. It's really weird, because I can boot into windows, it just says starting windows and does the loading thing. And then EASEUS Partition Manager comes and says that all resize operations were complete successfully(because I hadn't booted into windows since I resized stuff with it) and then the screen just stays black for a long time. I don't know what to do. If I wait long enough, my computer just reboots...

I have a LVM logical volume, that contains a LUKS encrypted volume, on which is an ext4 filesystem. I shrank the partition to the minimum size. Next step is to luksClose the device, and then to resize the LVM logical volume. I suspect that LUKS has overhead. So if the ext4 filesystem was resized from, say 1TB to 500G, I have the idea that resizing the LVM LV to 500G does not take LUKS overhead into account and this might corrupt data on the end of the FS. So, what's the smart move to take? How do I calculate the safe minimum LV size? Or should I just give the 500G disk a few gigabytes extra to be sure?
