OpenSUSE :: One-click Makes Installing Applications?

Sep 3, 2010

I like how easy one-click makes installing applications and all, but I wonder if there is a way to look "behind the curtain" and know what it is doing before clicking it. I'm just thinking of if I use the one-click in the software section (is that part of OBS?),

what all is going to happen, or can I just grab the latest .rpm and when it goes to get installed it determines and downloads dependencies automatically? I guess I want to make sure that these aren't adding 101 repositories that have to be refreshed for updates and clutter things up!

SUSE / Novell :: Open - Constantly Accessing Hard Drive - Makes Click Sound Every Time

Jun 26, 2010

The hard drive is accessed every few seconds with OpenSUSE and when it is there is a click sound when it is first accessed. I have other distros which dont make the clicking sound when they access the hard drive. I need to prevent opensuse from making the click sound when it does whatever it's doing. Im not even sure what it's doing or what settings to change, and most importantly how do i make it not click? Maybe i could copy settings over from another distro if i knew which settings to replace.

OpenSUSE :: Installing Debug Symbols For KDE Applications

Jan 9, 2011

I followed the instructions at
OpenSUSE: Bugreport KDE - openSUSE
to install debug symbols for okular which seems to crash quite often for me. However gdb and the kde crash application are unable to find them. The kde app says its not a good crash report and I should follow the guide.. which has already been done.

I installed
kdegraphics4-debuginfo
kdebase4-runtime-debuginfo
kdebase4-workspace-debuginfo
kdelibs4-debuginfo
libqt4-debuginfo

Is there a step I'm missing to get gdb to load the symbols or something?

Ubuntu :: Installing Makes Windows BSOD - Avoidable?

Jul 10, 2010

Last month, I agreed to install Ubuntu on my sisters Toshiba NB 305. Ubuntu was fine, but somehow installing it and GRUB hosed both the XP partition and the recovery partition. The Windows splash screen would appear for a second or too, and then Windows BSOD'ed.

I managed to coax the recovery partition into resetting the netbook, and told my sister to be happy with XP for the moment because I had to study for exams.

But she still wants her Linux. So I was wondering if there was a way to ensure that the installation would be OK.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Unable To DISABLE Sound Click On Applications

Jul 23, 2010

this morning after a reboot I made a discover. Clicking on tabs, launching applications, and so on, make annoying and stupid sounds from my speakers. CLICK, BOP, BLAP! Who decided to turn these things on? I'm listening MUSIC, I don't wanna those stupid sounds bother me! Anyway, I was suddendly on System -> Preferences -> Sound and I choosed Sound Theme: NO SOUND. But those annoying sounds are already there. And there's no way to disable them! Is this a BUG or what? Is there something to do?

I also discovered another thing: clicking on items that are at RIGHT of my screen, the sound come from RIGHT. Clicking on center, they come from center. Right, right. So I realize that sounds are stereophonic. And really I can't understand why a software developer choosed to waste his time coding a piece of code to do this, instead of solving the hundred millions of bugs we're affected from YEARS.

Slackware :: Not Able To 'click' With Touchpad After Installing Nvidia Driver

Jan 2, 2011

After compiling the 2.6.36.2 kernel and re-installing the Nvidia proprietary drivers, my touchpad has started to act strange; the cursor seems to glide a lot faster, yet more erratic and when I try to hover over an icon the cursor wont stay still, furthermore I lost the ability to 'click' on anything using just touchpad.

I have checked dmesg and Xorg.log for any clues, as well as removed everything with the exception of the card and device section from my xorg.conf. The issue has nothing to do with compiling the new kernel, as it was working perfect until I installed the Nvidia driver.

OpenSUSE :: Fullscreen Mode And Autocomplete Makes Black Blink ?

Mar 19, 2010

I have a weird problem in my Aspire One D150 with an Intel 945 GME, and in my HP DV5 with an Intel GM45. When i put a window like Firefox in full screen mode (F11), and try to get into a menu, or an auto-complete option or trying to access a URL in the history of the address bar, results in a black blink that its very annoying, because it happens all the time.

This problem appears in the most GTK Apps that i run in full screen mode. QT Works perfect. If the composite its off, works perfect in both.

This happens in KDE 4.3.5 and KDE 4.4.1, so I have no clue about this. I want my composite on, and make that the GTK Apps work as well as the QT ones.

Software :: Gnome With Associated Applications For Registered File Types / Cant See Apps From "open With" Menu When Right Click To A File?

Oct 6, 2010

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 with Gnome 2.30.

I remove the applications which i don't use from main-menu. Now i can not see them from "open with" menu when i right click to a file.

Also it will be very nice if Ubuntu can show me on the "open with" menu the possibilities of applications which can open properly the file type which i want to open. I try to configure with ubuntu-tweak's "file type manager" but it is not possible to configure all of file types. I think Ubuntu's applications must to know which applications has to show for which file types. And i don't know how to do that. I need an application like this : url

I get a new user from the same OS, and i see that the same problem still there... For example many many compressed files, audio or graphic files are not associated with vlc or gimp.

I try to configure from system files of gnome but it is very complicated.

General :: Installing And Running Downloaded Applications?

Oct 23, 2009

As a long time Windows user, I am stuck on the basics of installing and running downloaded Linux applications. I've tried to read a few tutorials but am still baffled. I am using a Puppy based boot CD and, of course, the applications that come with the Puppy all work fine. It is when I try to add something new that I become lost. Example: I just downloaded a Linux version of the Firefox browser.

I click on the downloaded file in the Download Manager and kinda expect the thing to give me a executable set-up file, but just get a whole bunch of files. One available option is to "extract" them. I create a folder to extract them to and "extract". With Firefox I see nothing in that folder. With a few other applications, I see an extracted list of files but and try to find one file that will magically start and install or boot an application, but nothing ever happens. So, how does one download , extract, install, and then run a basic application? The references I have found on the Internet tend to be rather old or more complex that my brain can handle.
