Ubuntu :: Where To Download 4 Screen Wallpaper
Jun 5, 2011
Can anyone recommend a good place to download wallpaper? I'm looking for a set of 4 wallpapers that preferably form some kind of continuous image when looking at the spinning cube (compiz), but look a bit different so I know which workspace I'm in.

I installed the Cairo dock and wanted to get rid of the taskbar on the left side. Found out that getting rid of Mutter would do that. Not satisfied, so long story short, reinstalled Mutter. Now I only get a white screen. No wallpaper, colors, themes, nothing. As I shut Ubuntu off I will get a flash of my wallpaper and then it's gone. 2 questions really: How do I get things back the way they were? Can I keep the dock but lose the standard sidebar?

I just installed OpenSUSE 11.4 on a completely blank machine, empty disks, etc. using a Network Install. The install appeared to run OK, but when it rebooted to do the configuration, it hung. I tried a manual reboot a couple of times, then booted in FailSafe mode - came up OK and ran through the auto-config. Now, it still boots up ok in FailSafe, but in normal mode I get the wallpaper on the screen, but it hangs there.

I just put on my Linux PC now and after booting logging into the user a/c, it just gives a blank screen with the desktop wallpaper - no menu's or anything, so there's pretty much nothing I can do. I know I had removed the menu and replaced it with the dock (awn dock or something).
However, I can log in as root and root works fine (so I'm doing the update at the moment).
Coming back to my question, I used to know an Ubuntu command which I put in as sudo (terminal)and it used to work like a magic command which would literally restore and repair my linux installation - I even used it when I bought a new system and transferred my linux hard drive from my previous machine to the new one and this one command actually setup and prepared my linux installation to work smoothly in my new PC - just one command after connecting my h/drive in the new PC.

i am using ubuntu 11.04 in my AMD machine, I have scheduled some torrent and wget downloads using crontab and sleep commands respectively. Since the download starts at 2 AM i used to leave my system ON. I would like to know if the download will automatically start from the login screen itself.(That is suppose i switch ON the system at 2 AM and never bother to login to my account.)

So i've been working on installing ubuntu on an old computer we have. It runs an amd athalon, and im pretty sure has integrated graphics. The problems i've run into are: on the regular download of ubuntu i always receive a black screen after the initial loading no matter what other settings i've tried from the boot menu, so i went ahead and downloaded the alternate version and i can get as far as partitioning, after i hit yes this is what i want partitioned, it instantly goes to a blue screen with gray input at the bottom and cuts off all hdd and cd usage and just hangs there...

The sort of add on for Firefox 'download helper' now has a new screen capture thing, in case it won't download the video from a particular site. You click the red button and a purple boundary appears round the video frame. I assume this is the basic function of the thing; it then provides the geometry of the purple frame to the program you've given it to capture the video.
By default the program it uses is 'recordmydesktop'. I've tried using this but get sound from the laptop's internal microphone, not the video. Tried 'pavucontrol' to remedy this but it says (wrongly) that no program is recording, so can't put things right.
So tried using ffmpeg: [URL]
Assume the stuff in curly brackets is what download helper supplies. Sometimes works perfectly but with B.BC. i-player only get the top left hand corner of the video and it is stretched somewhat horizontally.

Trying Ubuntu yet again (seems to occur every 6 months or so!)
I've installed Natty, and wasn't so keen on Unity so I decided to try Gnome 3. Not sure if I prefer it either but better than unity I think so giving it a go.
Anyway, my problem is that I don't have a wallpaper and changing it doesn't have any effect, it's just a solid colour.
At first I didn't have a desktop at all but changing a setting in the gnome 3 tweak tool (Have file manager handle the desktop > on) fixed that. Then I went to install nautilus elementary but that messed up my wallpaper, hence it's now blank. I've reverted to Nautilus now but I'm not sure elementary actually worked as it didn't look any different.

I just wrote a little script to help anyone out if they want to do this. Just download loginWallpaper.sh open your terminal and cd to the download directory run
Code:
sudo chmod 744 loginWallpaper
then run
Code:
./loginWallpaper.sh
and follow the prompts Make sure the pic you want to use is a .JPG and is in your home directory. Choose Option 1 on your first run. It will move the pic to the proper directory on the system and will open the Gnome Appearance Preferences at the log-in screen. After you run Option 1 logout, goto Background then Add button. Select your wallpaper and "BOOM" it changes. Log back in and run the script again
Code:
./loginWallpaper.sh
only use Option 2 to keep the Gnome Appearance Preferences from opening again.

PS- During install, it took 20 minutes to download the language packs, and it said I would be there close to forever for the update downloads.

Here at home I have several Ubuntu installations, mine, the kids computers and a couple of laptops. What I'm looking for is a solution or a pointer in the right direction to setup on our local Ubuntu server a sort of cache. Each day each Ubuntu on the network, checks for updates and downloads, and installs. What I'm looking for is a way for one machine to download the update and then the others to download from the local resource.
A sort of local cache to try and minimise everyone downloading straight from the net for pretty much the same updates. I did a emerge cache many years ago when I was using Gentoo, so I'm wondering what I can use/do here with Ubuntu as we are all loving this distro now.

I'm running 10.04 with compiz under gnome, and I'm having trouble getting my screenshots to capture properly. Currently they only display my wallpaper and not any windows or panels. I tried using the module in the custom settings manager but no key-binds seem to work, well either that or the plugin is failing to load when I initialise it.

Im having a bit of a problem with my wallpaper and flash. The wallpaper was fine up until yesterday, when i changed my window transparency, using the murrine engine. It has dissapeared but everything else is there (see Screenshot[/URL]), and if i attempt to choose any picture, the background goes black, and all icons etc dissapear. The tool bar remains though, and a workaround i have discovered is to run nautilus and log out, and back in. This brings back the grey screen.
As i said, i made my windows transparent using murrine, i had a lttle play around with a new emerald theme while i was there. Im running emerald, compiz, the apearance thing, and gnome colour chooser, so maybe there is a clash? Since the wallpaper dissapeared, im unable to view som flash, i can hear it, but not see it. For instance, ..... will load upnormal but where the video is, its just grey. I can right click etc as you would if it was a video, but just no picture.Any help would be greatly appreciated, my specs are on the screenshot, and if you need any more info ill be glad to post. I also have yuuguu installed if someone would like to help remotly?
