due to low disk space there arose a problem. Now I re-installed Debian along with winXP as dual boot. XP works as it was before. but i can't open Linux. When i select Debian on boot-select page, Debian starts but stuck at a point as shown below:
check root= boot arg cat/proc/cmd line
or missing modules,devices:cat/proc/modules ls/dev
ALERT!/dev/sda3/doesnot exist. Dropping to shell;
Busy Box v1.1.3(Debian 1:1.1.3-4) built-in shell(ash)
Enter 'Help' for a list of built-in commands.
/bin/sh: Cant access tty; job control turned off.
(intramfs)
i hv searched a lot but couldn't come up with a correct solution.i tried editing the grub by pressing 'e' when grub is displayed and added the line acpi=off irqpoll and then start booting. but the result was same.

I am getting the following error after booting my Ubuntu machine. Worked fine recently and after I upgraded some stuff when I rebooted the machine I got a green screen then hit an arrow key and got the following error message:Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)

Although I'm a linux user, I don't know much about the whole booting process myself. I normally have a friend that I can consult when things don't go the way I expected. But here's the thing: he updated my computer and went away. And of course I can't reach him and I really need it to work. And moreover, I want to be able to sole things myself.
The booting process stops halfway. The last thing it says is: can't access tty: job control turned off (initramfs) ...

I'm trying to control access to different services on an Debian server using /etc/group. So that a user I create for FTP usage doesn't fill up my server with IMAP folders or samba garbage.
Services like proftpd have:
AllowGroup ftpgroup
sshd have
AllowGroups sshgroup
And samba have
valid users = @smbgroup
But I can't find the correct option in Dovecot (/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf) Do anyone have the magic option or a workaround thats doesn't envolve maintaining seperate user databases and password?

This is the difference in the output of a port scan using Zenmap on the same system with UFW turned off and then with it turned on. It is obvious that UFW works.

The wireless connection works fine. The wireless switch automatically turns itself on every time I start the computer. However, after turning it off, I can't ever turn it on again unless I restart the computer. And because of this, the wireless connection is disabled until the next time I start the computer.I don't think this is a hardware problem because the switch can be turned on and off, although not in the way I expect.
I'm using ubuntu 9.10 on an Acer Aspire 4740G. The command [lspci | grep Network] shows Atheros Communications Inc. AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01). the [rfkill list] command shows (when the switch is on)
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
and, as expected, shows (when the switch is turned off)
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes
I just want to be able to turn the switch on or off at any time I want as long as the computer is still on.

Laptop is Dell Latitude C600/C500 with Pentium III 850Mhz, 256Kb L2 Cache, 256MB RAM, ATI M3 video card, HD 20005 MB and sound card is EES Maestro 3i. After trying to do something with Windows 2000 which was installed on the machine, I decided to put Linux without keeping windows on the machine. First I try with Xubuntu (latest version) which was working but slowly, then I found that Debian could work fine on that machine. I have installed latest version 5.08 and was surprised how goodly old machine can work. I solved problems with screen resolution (change from 800x600 to 1024x768) but I couldn't find solution how to fix problem with sound.
Actually I don't have sound on the machine. I looked for a linux driver for that sound card and Dell is only providing windows drivers. Then I found that I can solve the problem with ALSA drivers but I couldn't find the easy way (or any way at all) to install drivers and to get back the sound. When I click on 'Volume Control' (top right corner of the screen) I get the message: 'Volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.'

I got installed debian 6.0.1a en my compaq presario 1255 (amd-k6 with 160 Mb and 4.3 Gig), but I had to use expert install to be able to select lilo instead of grub2. I ended with a very basic system (it only uses 8Mb in console mode, and 28 Mb in fluxbox plus an xterm). It is still a very usable machine.
Previousy, I was able to install lenny 5.0.8 just with normal console mode install
I think that with lenny, the fan of the notebook (I mean the "external" one, I do not know if there is another in the micro) some times was on. but i do not think it works at any moment now with wheezy
I have been googling a couple of hours, but I am not getting a clear idea about fan and notebooks.
What have I to check? is it a module? something related to acpi?

My touchpad stopped working, most likely I have accidentally turned it off by some Fn-key combination (Fn-F4 on my laptop). Since then I was unable to turn it back again. What I've tried:
0. Same keycombo does not work. Actually, when checking with xev, Fn-F4 does not even toogle any KeymapNotify event. Some other Fn-combos result in KeymapNotify (e.g. screen brightness), some others (e.g. keyboard backlight) do not give event, but still do what they should do, and finally some do not do anything
1. Total power-off, also removing battery. This has usually solved touchpad problems on my other Fujitsu laptop, but not on this.
2. Checked xinput: it says, that touchpad is enabled
3. Also tried this trick: adding "options psmouse proto=imps" to appropriate config file. [URL] ....
4. Further playaround with psmouse, as described here:[URL] ....

I have a Dell Vostro 1520 laptop and dual boot Windows 7 and Debian 7.8 64-bit. Windows 7 does use a lot of resources and the cooling fan kicks in almost all the time and it's a bit noisy. So I installed Debian which makes a big difference as it uses less resources so the fan is on less often.I just installed LXDE desktop to try to reduce this even further and I must say it is much better but fan still comes on even when laptop is quite cool so not sure why fan is kicking in so early.
Any best software to control when the fan comes on. If there are any good tools that are easy to install for someone who is quite new to linux? URL...

Fairly new to debian and linux and general. I have an install of debian wheezy (to run LinuxCNC). I went in the graphical interface to the 'monitor' section and changed the screen resolution. I had two monitors, one labeled monitor and another (I think) Lenovo Monitor.
There was a check box in the screen monitor window that said something like, "Don't use this display." I figured it might turn off the lenovo and default to the generic monitor listed. I clicked it and my monitor turned OFF!! I tried another monitor (Dell in this case) and same thing, no video output.
I asked on the LinuxCNC forum and googled, but I just dont' seem to be able to figure out what or how to get to the solution.
I have been able to Ctrl-Alt-F1 to open a terminal. But, I can't find any the right files and found that the xrandr command 'should' work, but doesn't.
Whenever I issued the xrandr command (other than man xrandr), I get "Can't Open Display"
I did find two outputs VGA1 and LVDS1 in this file /var/log/Xorg.0.log and this coincides with what I saw in the monitor window. These are the 'output' types and if the xrandr command worked I'd issue something like : xrandr --ouptut LVDS1 --auto
I read about xorg.conf, but I could not find any xorg.conf files in the etc/X11 folder. In some of the info I found, the xorg.conf was replaced in this or a recent version of Debian by something else and confuses me.
One person had a similar issue and he got to this directory: $HOME/.e/e/config/standard" and found files such as:
"e_randr.cfg" plus "e_randr.1.cfg" thru "e_randr.9.cfg"
But, I can't get to that folder. How to turn on my monitor display?

On my laptop, I have stable installed. The original install was about two years ago, and I've just been keeping up with all of the stable updates. It is now an up to date Lenny. Over the months and years I have added several new icon themes to Gnome. I have noticed over time that several of the icon themes' icons have turned up missing. To see what I'm talking about take a look at the screen shots here: [URL]
Screenshot-2 is a closeup.
As you can see, icon themes Amaranth, Crux and Dropline Etiquette are missing their respective theme icons. The icon themes work, when selected, but the icon theme icon in the "Customize Theme" window never appears. Several of the other icon themes are the same. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the icon theme packs, but that doesn't fix it. I also have a desktop system of Debian stable with some of the same icon themes as on the laptop, but it does not have this problem. However, it is a much newer installation.

The problem is that I turned the laptop off without saving a document in Openoffice. Now every time I open OpenOffice it comes the OpenOffice Document Recovery and asks me to Press "Start Recovery". The dialog window is too large and I can't move it beyond the top of the screen to find the "Start Recovery" button. It goes until the top of the screen and that 's it!Also I can't resize it to a small one.I have tried to "move" it but it doesn't work.I have autohidden the upper and down bars but nothing! The window is too big to find the "Press button".
How can i make the window going upper the screen?

Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. Dial-up Internet connection. I turned off automatic updates before ever connecting to the Internet. When I checked for updates manually a few days ago, forty-some files downloaded. A few of them were quite large, perhaps a megabyte or two. Several of the files near the top of the list were marked as "Failed". There were no failures farther down the list.
After they were all downloaded, Update Manager tells me that 315 updates are available, under the two headings, "Important security updates" and "Recommended updates". The "Changes" box at the bottom of the window says that the list of changes failed to download. I ran the Update Manager again but it quickly told me (in effect) that there was nothing new since the previous check, and nothing more was downloaded. The descriptions of the updates are horribly inadequate. And I *am* looking at the long decriptions in the box at the bottom. For most updates the information is not adequate to determine what it does, whether it would have any effect on my particular system, or whether it would benefit me. For example, near the top of the list of 315 updates:

I'm using Sun One LDAP server, (Soon to be moving to openldap). I have one Master server, no slaves, about 60 user accounts.
I'd like to add an attribute to each of the users DN's to restrict there ability to login to specific hostnames. I.e. I have hosts A, B and C. Dev staff can access A and B, but not C, and support staff need to access all of them.
I found a link at [url] which talked about using 'hostsallowedlogin' and 'hostsdeniedlogin' attributes but I'm presuming these are bespoke. If they are, how do you configure the ldap.conf to take note of these attributes when authorizing access?

Quick explanation about what this thread is: by way of an article featured on linuxtoday, I learned about what appears to be an actively managed IP blacklist: [URL]
# This is a compiled list of dirty hosts associated with
# bruteforcing attempts, spam, botnets, RBN and the list
# continues to grow. The data is comprised of information
# compiled from Arbor Networks, Project Honeypot, FIRE
# (maliciousnetwork.org), Host Exploit, Shadowserver and
# a variety of other similarly based sites.
Quick explanation about what this thread is not: this is not intended to be a discussion about default deny vs. default allow (i.e. whitelists vs. blacklists), nor is this a call for enumerations of your own sshd hardening strategy. Please try to keep on point. That said, can anyone speak to the quality of the blacklist information noted above? And/or are there any suggestions for a readily available blacklist of "known better" quality? I plan to try including an actively maintained blacklist like this into a multi-layered approach for hardening an sshd bastion host.
