Ubuntu :: Cant Access Tty Job Control Turned Off?

Jul 22, 2010

I am getting the following error after booting my Ubuntu machine. Worked fine recently and after I upgraded some stuff when I rebooted the machine I got a green screen then hit an arrow key and got the following error message:Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:

- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)

Although I'm a linux user, I don't know much about the whole booting process myself. I normally have a friend that I can consult when things don't go the way I expected. But here's the thing: he updated my computer and went away. And of course I can't reach him and I really need it to work. And moreover, I want to be able to sole things myself.

The booting process stops halfway. The last thing it says is: can't access tty: job control turned off (initramfs) ...

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Switch Can't Be Turned On Again After Being Turned Off

Feb 2, 2010

The wireless connection works fine. The wireless switch automatically turns itself on every time I start the computer. However, after turning it off, I can't ever turn it on again unless I restart the computer. And because of this, the wireless connection is disabled until the next time I start the computer.I don't think this is a hardware problem because the switch can be turned on and off, although not in the way I expect.

I'm using ubuntu 9.10 on an Acer Aspire 4740G. The command [lspci | grep Network] shows Atheros Communications Inc. AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01). the [rfkill list] command shows (when the switch is on)

0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

and, as expected, shows (when the switch is turned off)

0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes

I just want to be able to turn the switch on or off at any time I want as long as the computer is still on.

Ubuntu Servers :: Way To Control Access - Some Files/folders Would Even Need To Put In A Password

Apr 11, 2010

I've managed to setup Ubuntu Server 9.10, and created folders/files toview/edit/execute with Windows and Mac.

Now here is my dilemma, this is for a home server, and I will have 4 users(1 for myself, one with "admin" rights, my fiance(mac user), media pc, and a "guest" account for the computer or 2 that are out in the public(they don't need access to my taxes ).

I'd like to have it so that on my laptop, I can access the whole server, but some files/folders would even need me to put in a password. I want to do this because my fiance gets delete happy and deletes things, so if she goes on my computer she won't delete important info. I'd like her to have access to music, photos, and videos, as well as her having her own folder that she can treat as her hard drive.

The question is, do I need to setup a domain for this, or can I get away with a workgroup?

General :: LDAP Access Control For Users ?

Feb 16, 2010

I'm using Sun One LDAP server, (Soon to be moving to openldap). I have one Master server, no slaves, about 60 user accounts.

I'd like to add an attribute to each of the users DN's to restrict there ability to login to specific hostnames. I.e. I have hosts A, B and C. Dev staff can access A and B, but not C, and support staff need to access all of them.

I found a link at [url] which talked about using 'hostsallowedlogin' and 'hostsdeniedlogin' attributes but I'm presuming these are bespoke. If they are, how do you configure the ldap.conf to take note of these attributes when authorizing access?

Security :: IP Blacklist(s) For SSHD Access Control

Nov 4, 2010

Quick explanation about what this thread is: by way of an article featured on linuxtoday, I learned about what appears to be an actively managed IP blacklist: [URL]

# This is a compiled list of dirty hosts associated with
# bruteforcing attempts, spam, botnets, RBN and the list
# continues to grow. The data is comprised of information
# compiled from Arbor Networks, Project Honeypot, FIRE
# (maliciousnetwork.org), Host Exploit, Shadowserver and
# a variety of other similarly based sites.

Quick explanation about what this thread is not: this is not intended to be a discussion about default deny vs. default allow (i.e. whitelists vs. blacklists), nor is this a call for enumerations of your own sshd hardening strategy. Please try to keep on point. That said, can anyone speak to the quality of the blacklist information noted above? And/or are there any suggestions for a readily available blacklist of "known better" quality? I plan to try including an actively maintained blacklist like this into a multi-layered approach for hardening an sshd bastion host.

Right click the Folder, go to Properties
Click the "Access Control List" tab
Select a user from the "Participants List"
Click Add

For most users this process works fine but with one of them I get the following error:
"Could not add ACL entry: Invalid Argument"
I also tried a script that a former employee created which seems to employ this command:
setfacl -m u:<USER>:rw- <PATH>
Running the command with the correct user and path returns a similar "Invalid Argument" error.
We're using OpenSuse 10.2.

Ubuntu Servers :: Ton Set "access Control" For Server?

Jan 28, 2010

I have ubuntu based web server running in home which I use for varying purposes. Now I have ran to situation that I would like ton set "access control" for my server so that on main page user can login and then he/she sees that what sites on server he can access.

Basically this would be simple to do with .htaccess protection, but it would be per directory solution and this is not so easy to manage. However what I wish to get done here is that there would be access control check and an login prompt on webserver document root which would require to authenticate if heading to non public section of webserver.

currently I got my server root like this
/var/www (server root, no website and here would come access control point)
/var/www/site1 (primary website on my server to where most of visitors are going to)
/var/www/site2 (secondary site for specific things on my server)
/var/www/directory1/site3 (site which I do wish to have for closed group only)
/var/www/directory2/site4 (my online education and studying portal which I wish to control)

And I would want to allow everyone to access site1 and site2 without any restriction

Now what kind of solution would work here ? I am not sure and I don't have full techical knowledge of making this reality, There probably is multiple ways to do this and one could be .htaccess control, however what I wish to have is an easy to manage system which is also expandable.
