I am going to install debian on my laptop. I just wondering that i am not able to see differentiation between debian installation package for server or desktop? are debian server and desktop edition included in one package ?
View 2 RepliesI am an extremely new Ubuntu Server user. I am trying to install NFS on a new Ubuntu Server 10.10 installation. When running the command sudo apt-get install nfs-kernel-server nfs-common portmap, I was previously getting the message:
E: unable to locate package nfs-kernel-server
I'm sure I don't have the correct sources for installation, I just don't know source I need to add.
I got Squeeze installed and choosed all the options at the installation ste like (web server, mysql server, DNS server) and then I am trying to get VHCS installed on the machine. apt-get install vhcs , is not working for me. I gues I have to add a source address to my sources.list file. All the manuals I've found so far for debian and vhcs is for debian etch or earlier and those sources they given arent working for me. I still get the message where it says "unable to locate package vhcs. What is the source address I can download VHCS?

I am following this guide to installing eclipse via terminal command-line on Linux. However, this seems to be happening lately with all the packages I try to install..I checked the Synaptic Package Manager and reloaded and rebooted the computer, but to no avail.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI tried to update to Ubuntu 11.04 from 10.10, and I got a strange error like "Unable to calculate changes, package ubuntu-desktop is needed but not going to be installed". Then the sistem claimed to return back to the previous state, but now ALL the package are marked as "upgradable", and the Software Updater is suggesting me to do a "partial upgrade". What happened? How I can get back with a coherent system? I don't installed the xubuntu-desktop, BTW.

I use Command "sudo" for being the root user and password is the normal user password.I need to execute the commands as rootuser. when i am the normal user, "$" is the terminal symbol and when i use sudo and become root user ,even then the symbol is $.is that right? Its perfectly fine for some commands.But i need to have a different represention when i am root user??? How do i make it happen? I would also want to know if super user and root user are one and the same?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI downloaded and mounted debian-8.2.0-amd64-netinst.iso on my work machine's VirtualBox v5.0.12 to check out Debian stable/Jessie's installer and clean installation in case I need to do it soon. I like the new installer compared to 11/24/2011 on my old desktop machine. It is much nicer, fancier with its advanced options, etc.
However, I ran into issues with its "Select and Install" part when I selected desktop managers (e.g., KDE and Gnome) and continued. It failed as shown in [URL] .... images. Why? I tried again from scratch and same thing. If I don't select any and just select non-GUI stuff (e.g, SSH and standard system utilities), then it works but I want the pretty GUI stuff.

I keep finding gcc-4.3 4.3.2-1.1 but after I install it it doesn't help me and gcc 4.3.2-2 still requests gcc-4.3 4.3.2-1.

Cannot install updates. Click on icon which says 65 updates available but update manager opens and is blank and frozen .Reboot and same results. apt-get install updates says Unable to locate package updates. Everything has worked perfectly upto now I am running Squeeze.

I am trying to upgrade a Debian 4 server to v5 with the instructions from document.However, I am having trouble with getting an installed package upgraded to the latest version for the current release (see error below). And I am afraid to upgrade the distribution if I can't get this package to upgrade. One thing I did notice in the error was, "Aborting downgrade from (at least) 5.1 to 5.0". The dpkg --get-selections command showed that both MySQL 5.0 and 5.1 were installed (I don't know how or why, as I was not the one to setup this server), but 5.0 was the one running. So I've since uninstalled v5.1 but that error still shows up when I try to do an apt-install upgrade. I don't know that this is what is causing the package upgrade to fail but I thought it worth mentioning.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have some problems to start my dovecot server on Debian 6.0.1 I tried to install it from webmin using "un-used modules" but it was allways the same error: "E: Unable to locate package dovecot-pop3d".
When I tried to install it from console using the commands: apt-get install dovecot-imapd dovecot-pop3d dovecot-common - and there are no problems with dovecot-imapd and dovecot-common, but still the same error with dovecot-pop3d: "E: Unable to locate package dovecot-pop3d".
I did apt-get update ant apt-get upgrade but I'm receiving still the same error when I want to install pop3d.
It's interesting because there were no problems to install and run dovecot server on earlier versions of debian.
I'm running Karmic Desktop Live CD from a USB stick, and trying to install Ubuntu to a hard disk using debootstrap I get these errors:

after alot of work with my system, I've gotten most of it working It's a Toshiba C655-S5049 with a Atheros AR9285 Wireless card, so lots of fun getting that to work, anyway I'm trying to update my system, and it wont update, if I try update manager it won't do it because it's dealing with restricted drivers, and if I try in terminal I get E: Unable to locate package updateAnyway, any suggestions? I installed a command line version of Ubuntu 10.10 using the alternate install disk. To suit my needs, I have to install the gcc C compiler in this environment. When connected under root, I enter the command: 'apt-get install gcc'. The error 'E: unable to locate package gcc' is then displayed on screen. how to install gcc? Is this package available from the alternate install disk or do we have to download it. If I dowbload a tar file, where should I copy it to to be able to have the install application see it?

I've google'd a bit but found no solid solution yet to this problem. Everything goes fine and I'm able to partition my SCSI drives and everything. After the installation starts unpacking and copying files this happens. I have to mention that I'm installing from a USB drive with the following added at the end of the normal install options:
