Ubuntu Installation :: Debootstrap Can't Use Desktop CD As Package Source?
Sep 7, 2010
I'm running Karmic Desktop Live CD from a USB stick, and trying to install Ubuntu to a hard disk using debootstrap I get these errors:
$ sudo debootstrap karmic /dir file:///cdrom/
Quote:
I: Retrieving Release
I: Validating Packages
I: Resolving dependencies of required packages...
I: Resolving dependencies of base packages...
W: Failure trying to run: chroot /dir mount -t proc proc /proc
[Code].....
I've read this bug report: [URL] basically, the discussion states that Desktop CD can not be used as package source for debootstrapping, I understand it is because of different file structure than the required for a repository, but would like to know more specific information about it, and if possible, how could I use the CD as package source for debootstrap?

I am trying to run "sudo pbuilder create" where it runs debootstrap. Then it says:
Code:
I: Checking component main on http://bg.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu. Problem is that this is the old repo I've used. After installing pbuilder and the other dpkg essential packages I've run "sudo pbuilder create", noticed the message of the repo and since I am no longer in Bulgaria, interrupted the script, went to synaptic and changed the repo from there (now is http://archive.linux.duke.edu/ubuntu/). Even rebooted. Double-checked in synaptic the repo is still changed, grepped the files in /etc/apt for "bg" and all results were commented. I ran again "sudo pbuilder create" and it still reports the old repo.
So where does debootstrap reads the repo setting from and how to fix it?

I have a project and would like to create a .deb package that brought on any computer with debian distribution installs it in your home user who is installing.I followed a guide and managed to create a deb package from my sources with FPM. But creates them with root permissions and tells me that I should create a script before installation to change the permissions.

I am an extremely new Ubuntu Server user. I am trying to install NFS on a new Ubuntu Server 10.10 installation. When running the command sudo apt-get install nfs-kernel-server nfs-common portmap, I was previously getting the message:
E: unable to locate package nfs-kernel-server
I'm sure I don't have the correct sources for installation, I just don't know source I need to add.

I recently got an iPhone 3g and have been trying to upload music onto my device with Rhythmbox because my computer exclusively runs Ubuntu (10.04 LTS, Lucid Lynx). Rhythmbox would show files that were dragged and dropped as being on the iPhone, and they appeared in the iPhone's folders, but they weren't recognized in the iPod player. I followed a variety of forum threads to try to fix the problem, but ended up creating a whole new set of problems with my package manager.
I get this error message before package manager opens: E: Type 'n' is not known on line 2 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pmcenery-ppa-lucid.list E: The list of sources could not be read. Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
And this message after I close the first error message window and the package manager opens: An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:Type 'n' is not known on line 2 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pmcenery-ppa-lucid.list, E:The list of sources could not be read.' Does anyone have any recommendations on how to fix this? If it isn't already apparent, I am very inexperienced working with ubuntu, so the more detailed the response, the better.

So I have installed Debian through debootstrap and it seemed to go off without a hitch, the problem came problem came about during the boot process. I am dual-booting with Arch and use Systemd-boot as my bootloader... it finds the kernal and initrd and starts to boot but I run into this problem where it gets to the options part for root and doesn't mount. have done this very same installation on virtualbox with ext4 filesystem and it worked without a hitch.. I know it has something to do with the btrfs subvolumes I'm so new to Debian I haven't made it past this installation process..
here is my lsblk
Code: Select all Â
sda    8:0   0  /My_Files
sdb    8:32  0  /home
sdc    8:48  0  Â
[code]....
I have installed btrfs-tools and I don't know what the following means... It seems to do the first two fine, vmlinuz and initrd.img but it doesn't find my root because maybe it doesn't recognize the 'rootflags' tag? or Debian doesn't automatically deal with btrfs-subvolumes nicely?
Code:
Select allBegin: checking root file system . . . fsck from util-linux 2.25.2
/sbin/fsck.btrfs: BTRFS file system
mount: mounting PARTUUID=................................................................ on /root failed
Target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init

I have an etch-based Xen server that has several Xen domU's on it. All the domU's are etch or lenny based, but I'd like to install a karmic guest. I use xen-tools to install my domU's - e.g., xen-create-image --debootstrap <etc.>After much googling, I've found bits and pieces of info that have gotten me closer to the goal, but the debootstrap script I have is for hoary (I think etch came with this), and I'm pretty sure this won't work.
If you have been able to successfully install a Karmic guest on an etch or lenny host, I'd be very grateful for pointers.

I want to compile geki2 from source. I tried apt-get source geki2but I getReading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to find a source package for geki2I assume that /etc/apt/sources.list needs some additional entry. I run lenny.
Apart from that could someone explain to me what is the importance of files *.dsc , *.tar.gz and *.diff.gz in every package ? I assume *.tar.gz is the source. Is this independent from Debian ? I assume also that *.diff.gz is some patch you have to apply after you expand *.tar.gz in order to get a Debian specific version but how do you apply the patch ?

I was a die hard Ubuntu user for the last 2 years and decided to use something more advanced or different. My question (after searching the crap out of Google) is how can I view the source code of Fedora? I have found many sites explaining this but it is not written in terms that are easy for me to understand. I haven't been programming for years and using advanced features in Linux so most of these sites are not explaining out and most are explaining how to build and add on to the kernel.

Kubuntu ships by default with a crippled K3b that won't rip DVDs to video files. Therefore I followed the instructions here to install it from source against libdvdread-dev. Now KPackageKit is continuously bugging me about 5 updates: k3b, k3b-dbg, libk3b-dev, libk3b6, and libk3b6-extracodecs. If I let those be "updated," I just get the binary versions of the same versions, without DVD ripping capabilities. Is there a way to get DVD ripping in k3b without APT continuously wanting to "update," it away?

why status of fedora-source is 0, dose this means there's no available packages in this repo? kernel-headers and kernel-devel have been installed, how can i install the kernel-source package?

i got a question about making a package from orginal wine source. I keep getting a error on the last part (will post the errro later in post )
What i do is this .
apt-get install devscripts cdbs dh-make
apt-get build-dep wine
cd to the directory
dh_make -n -b -s
[Code]...
When i remove the ati drivers it builds fine but with every build of wine to remove my ati drivers is not a option. I also asked on the wine forums but the told me to ask here . And the person also sayed it looks like you install the ati drivers from the one of the ati site but i installed them from the debian repos.

I wanted to fix something in the Kate editor. So instead of downloading it from it's website (Get It! - Kate | Get an Edge in Editing) I wanted to download the "openSUSE Kate" source package. But as you can see, there is no source package available. I tested it with source installation of "zypper" (zypper si zypper) and it worked.Any ideas? Is the kate source code in another package?
