I'm trying to install debian in advanced text mode.. I need to change my MAC address to work with the DHCP server, but there is no ipconfig in the shell opened by the installation menu.
View 8 Repliessince a whole week now i am trying to set up a Debian System on an old Ibook G4, with 1.2 GHz and 768 MB RAM. My Install Media is the Wheezy 8-CD-Set. I am not going to have anything besides Debian on the Notebook.
The Install process works fine until the Installation of the Core System. At the end of this process a window pops up and tells me that the CD with the title Wheezy-CD-1 or something like that is inserted and asks me to insert another CD or DVD now. Up to this point everything seems fine to me, but when i hit the "OK" Button the CD won´t come out of the Notebook, and besides that the Installer freezes. A progress bar, entitled with "executing cdset", is shown at a progress of 25% and does not move, also nothing happens when i try to cancel the process.
Whats the problem with my Installation? I already downloaded a second copy of the first Image and burned it again in case something was wrong with Installation Media, but the problem is still the same.
I'm installing debian squeeze and and I've got 2 hdd (sda,sdb), but I want to install it on sdb. When i get to the "Install the grub boot loader on the hard disk" it automatically installs it on /dev/sda (and I get an error), I want to install it on /dev/sdb... Is it possible.

When creating their account, I have turned off the 'Connect to ethernet and wireless' option of the Advanced Settings.
However, when I log into their accounts, they still have full access to the internet through both the wireless and ethernet connections. Is this option for some other purpose?
Is there an alternate way to limit internet access for childrens' accounts in Ubuntu? (I'm used to MS Family Safety as a filter for internet access - is there an eqivalent for Ubuntu?)
I have a linux (Slackware) machine and the time/date is like, June 23rd 2003, 10:00am (It's 11 here) and I am not able to set the time to have it correct. I change the timezome to Montreal but the time is still wrong.
Is there a way to force it to sync with my domain controler or even another online NTP server?
How do I get advanced installation options on the LiveCD? In former versions, I could hit F4 for modes. Do I need to use the alternate CD instead?
For reference, this is what I'm trying to do.
Ok so was looking through a guide and stumbled on this: ppc --> 32-bit, compatible with all Macintosh computers (excluding Intel Macs) and the PlayStation 3. Does this mean that if I have some old Macs (G3s) to be precise I could put Fedora on it? Does this involve a whole lot of hacking or not?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've installed last Debian Stable with Gnome 3 environment and after added my enterprise account into the Gnome Online Accounts it apear into Evolution (but only after i've manually installed evolution-ews package) the problem is that i can't change any adevanced settings like "local synchronisation" into Evolution.
It's like Gnome Online Accounts revert back the settings each time i change it.
Can anyone tell me if F15 is aware of the new Advanced Format Hard disks. The new dell laptop has one of these drives in it. The reason for the question is the disk is a 250Gb but only seems to have 230ish available which does seem a lot to loose? The dell website only talks about Windows and not linux. Below is from their site:

I already have Ubuntu 10.041 and windows xp installed as dual-boot.I am installing another version of Ubuntu in a logical partition.On the last page of the live install guide, there are advanced options.There is a check box next to install boot loader.I already have boot loader from previous Ubuntu installation, correct?What were to happen if I un-check this box?The reason I ask is there were grub updates from previous Ubuntu install.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy System Intel Core Duo E5300 Mobo - Gigabyte G31M-ES2L 1GB DDR2 800MHz RAM 4 x WD20EARS HDD I have been trying to install Fedora or Ubuntu for over a week. I thought it would take an hour and i would be away. I have been trying to install using the mdadm Software RAID feature. Everytime it takes about a day to format the drives and then i get an installation error. The drives state they are ready to use as is on any operating system other then WinXP, but this does not appear to be the case.
I am very new to Fedora... I have been doing some reading.[URL].. That information has been promising. I have been able to get into Fdisk off the live CD but i can't figure out how or if it is possible to do what i want it to.
Has anyone had any luck getting these drives to function correctly in a software RAID? I have had good luck with WD drives in the past and just assumed these drives would do what i wanted to but alas i have been proven wrong.
The partitions i wanted was...
- A 2GB swap parition
- A 10 GB RAID 1 partition for Fedora
- The remaining space as a Raid 5 for files.
Am i just banging my head against a wall here, or is this possible.
I am new to Linux and I just installed Debian Jessie about a week ago. I have been tweaking it and learning the command line and all that, but I also have been reading and studying about different aspects of Debian that I was unaware of before I installed it. Because of my reading, I think that I would like to change my desktop environment. When I installed Debian, I consciously chose the Cinnamon desktop because I felt that the simplicity would suit my needs, but I have recently read about KDE and I think that it has some features that I would be interested in. Is it possible to change my desktop environment now, even though I have already installed Debian? If so, how difficult is it?
On a very closely related question, I do have an extra 60 GB partition just sitting there with nothing on it. As an alternative to the above scenario of changing desktop environments before I know exactly which one I will like better, I can make another installation of Debian on my free partition and run both Cinnamon and KDE side-by-side for a little while until I learn which one suits my needs the best.
It's been awhile since I've posted.
I am curious as to the best and most practical way to change a desktop install into a server install. In other words, I want to get rid of X and KDE and all the extra software related to the two and have a purely command line interface.
I have discovered that having a GUI in a server context is kind of pointless, and when upgrading software requires a lot of time to upgrade the extra software related to X and KDE. I just want to clean it up and make it lean and mean.

not trolling for a flame war but I simply added the testing repository earlier and did an apt install of just lottanzb and it ended up taking ages and installed lots of new files and removed things like Epiphany etcetera, and that one command had me having to reinstall as it messed everything up so it wouldn`t work at all even the shell was messing up.I have never had Windows break totally from an install, but first try with Linux and it did so could someone explain why an apt-get install lottanzb would change all my libraries, config files etcetera with the testing version over Lenny stable?
View 14 Replies View RelatedBeen doing some installations in a newly upgraded machine where I'm setting up two instances of 8.2 in slightly different configurations.Installing from netinst AMD64 DVD with firmware non-free. First installation goes smooth as then the second changes the UUID of the swap partition, meaning that the first then can't find it. To add insult to injury the second installation doesn't install GRUB in the MBR of the HDD.
Nothing different or special about the installation which is standard graphical with manual allocation of previously set up partitions. I don't touch the swap drive in the partitioner - just point to the correct partitions for / and /home as I want them. This is exactly as I've done before, many times.Setup asks me if I want to install GRUB in MBR and I answer "No" (because it would otherwise load in MBR of sda where I want it on sdb) then point to sdb in the next screen. Again really nothing different to what I've done dozens of times.
I'm running the installer, and "Guided Partitioning" selected partition sizes I'm not completely happy with. I selected separate partitions for /home, /var, /usr, /tmp etc, and by default it gave me only 5GB for the /usr partition. I'd like to take some space away from /home and give it to the /usr partition, but I can't figure out how to do that using the menu options available.
View 7 Replies View RelatedIf I understand everything right I can use simple cd to create an install of my system then config everything and create an archive of /etc,/var,/usr and that give me a backup of my changed files. but what I am not able to do is create a script to replace the files with the archived version of the config files automatically. I need it to be ran as a post intall script or to configure the conf files as part of the install. what I configure on every reinstall. apache,proftpd,mysql,php,and wordpress. Since I am still learning I reinstall a lot and standard backups have not been working for me. But I can put the whole install including backup on one cd. Is there a way replace only the change files from the archive. or getting a list of just the modafied files on my system.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed an ATI graphics card driver (fglrx) and ran the aticonfig --initial program/option, which makes the necessary changes to xorg.conf for the user.
My original problem was that all of my font sizes were changed (far too small to even read). I found a temporary way around this by simply increasing the sizes in the gnome appearance properties, but the problem is there is no option to change the size of text that appears in editable fields. For example, simple text-line entry widgets in various applications appear very small (as well as the default text size in icedove mail). Trying to use openoffice.org Writer or Calc also gives the same results. It seems directly related to the sizes of "editable fields" (things like my text editor - gedit- appear to be fine, as well as my terminal). I'm guessing this could have something to do with my xorg.conf, but I've looked through the file and don't know what to change, or where else I could look. If it helps at all, I have most of my font sizes now (in gnome) set to 14, but they appear as 12.
I'm not sure exactly why this is happening, but I need some help in getting some of this text readable again. Please see the attached screenshot of a blank Calc spreadsheet, and it might shed some light on this. You might also notice that in the screenshot, the default font size is 10, but if I change this to 12, and then load it on say, a Windows computer, the text will appear to be much larger than a 12. I'll also include my xorg.conf, in case that has anything to do with it.

Once I've booted my Etch install disc, are there some parameters in configuration files I can edit in the ramdisk filesystem that will allow me to install Squeeze instead? Or, even, paramters I can edit to point at the archive.debian.org repository to install Etch?
Why:
I've got a Sun Ultra10 with IDE drives (hard disk and cd drive) on which I previously had Etch installed. I recently tried to upgrade it to Squeeze, botched the upgrade, and formatted the drive. I'm now trying to install Squeeze from scratch.
When I use the Squeeze disc (debian-6.0.0-sparc-xfce+lxde-CD-1.iso), it cannot detect my IDE drives. I also have the disc I originally used to install Etch, way back when. It will boot and detect the drives, but cannot install because Etch is no longer in the repositories.
I have been installing 10.4 on machines with much success from USB. This is really the first Linux distro I have been excited about. I'm having problems on one machine though. It is a Dell Precision T5400 with a RAID 0 on Dell 6/iR Adapter controller. I booted to USB no problem, just like I did on my netbook, and laptop and did a pretty standard install. I'm dual booting to XP on this workstation. After the installer completed, I didn't see a grub menu. It's like nothing happened. Of course in Windows I see less drive space now since I had allocated that for Ubuntu in the Ubuntu setup. To clarify, I am not using Wubi.

Each previous install it has done it has installed on the wrong hard drive and installed over the Vista loader then occasionally not detecting Windows at all, hence my want to put grub on my other disk.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to do is protect the computer against housemates. The standard procedure I do with Lenny:
1. Password protect BIOS.
2. In BIOS, always boot from hard drive. Disable booting from any other device such as USB or CD-ROM.
3. Password protect Grub (v1) using the "password --md5 $1$9MuaA/$5TDLgvmcEiCWNr5W9VaMK1" syntax in my menu.lst file.
With the above precautions in place, [I think] the only way to gain root access to the system is to take the case lid off and proceed to do stuff physically (like set jumpers and/or take out the hard drive). Am I correct? My reasoning for this is, the computer boots -> must boot from HD -> must load Grub -> must go to default menu item since others are protected, and cannot command prompt in Grub without password.
Anyhow, In Squeeze, I was a bit disappointed to find out, after doing a bit of Google-research, that Grub v2 (which is standard on Squeeze now) does not easily support password protecting the Grub menu. Am I correct? Will this issue perhaps be addressed in the Squeeze final release? Is this feature dumb anyways because the Grub password is of no use (i.e. my paragraph above is complete horseradish)?
Another thing I would like to do is change the console font and size back to something more "normal" or "classic", not some crazy tiny font that's only found in totally bleeding edge Linux distrubutions <gasp!>. I found that the Squeeze console font (e.g. when I type Ctrl+Alt+F1) is wicked tiny. I wanna change it to "normal". Grub v2 password and console font config?
I installed fedora 15 and i m not able to change the monitor resolution. if I open the display settings I just get the choice between 1024x768 and 800x600.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 64bit on my Qosmio Toshiba laptop.
At the completion of the install i had about a page of errors. But it boots up ok. However when i tried to install Visual Paradigm on the system i found that every time i ran the executable i get an error message saying access denied. Found away around this problem on a VP forum so managed to get the program to work with the non-install version.
The problem i am having now is i can save files. I have checked the permissions of the vpworkshop folder (properties > permissions) and all permissions are currently set to '---'. If i try and change them to 'wr'. It just reverts back to '---'.
I have been learning Debian by using a virtual machine. After fine-tuning my installation procedure, I decided to copy that installation to my physical system. The hard drive already has another Linux based system installed. I plan to dual boot.After copying files I updated fstab and menu.lst.The partition scheme between the virtual and physical environments are similar, but the partitions are not mapped exactly the same.Thus the Debian system on the physical hard drive fails to boot simply because the initrd is created for the root partition location on the virtual machine. The initrd created in the virtual machine is looking for the root file system on /dev/hda1 whereas on my physical drive the new location is /dev/sda7.How can I rebuild the initrd on the physical system? I started to use the installation DVD in rescue mode, but I did not get too far.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI down loaded Debian 5.0.4 and burned it to CD (several times I might add till it was right) and now the computer I'm putting it on wont acknowledge it as a boot disk and load. It does not have a problem with my windows cd, which has a crack and the start of all my problems, But not the Debian CD-1 disk. what now? The computer is an IBM thinkpad a22p. Everything works as far as I can tell. But I was going to reinstall Windows and failed in that because of a small crack on the edge of the disk that stopped the install and any hope of accessing the file on the laptop. Microsoft does not support windows xp any longer, you must buy windows 7, but the ibm will not run it due to processor speed and ram limitations. But it will run linux and I'm willing to try it just to get out of microsoft control.
Idon't know what else to do. This is the link to where I downloaded the software ( [URL] ). The others five that i downloaded were on the same page that I got this one. Are there bad files here? Is there a missing file in the disc?
I'm somewhat familiar with Ubuntu (familiar but not sharp!) but have never tried Debian OS until now. I've installed Debian 5 64bit as a guest on a Mac host. I'm impressed how smooth the install went; even installing VB Guest Additions went smoothly. But, I get a "Your system had a kernel failure" error after booting. I have searched the forum & didn't find this error. Everything seems to work okay but is there an update that isn't showing in the Update Manager? Could this have something to do with VirtualBox 3.1.4?
