Debian Installation :: 8.1.0 Won't Boot From M5a97 Mobo After Install
Sep 27, 2015
I am a real debian noob. I may be too old for this (things have changed a bit since I first started hacking fortran in 1971), but will try one more time.I am editing this original post to clarify: my debian install will not boot to GUI. It will boot to a shell under the advanced option.I have tried loading debian 8.1.0 from DVD. The system will install, but will not boot after the install.On a regular reboot, the last command is fsck. Then it hangs.
On a recovery mode reboot, the last output is:[7.940682] FAT-fs (sdal) utf8 is not a recommended IO charset for FAT files (my handwriting is bad - may not be 100%). - then it will hang.The problem may well be the result of UEFI and the m5a97 R2.0 mobo I am using with my amd 8230E processor. I've been doing some research on UEFI and archlinux. It is a bit of a challenge for me.
I've managed to load ubuntu on this drive. I burned a debian 8.2.0 live DVD, but it will hang also. debian live will hang before it gets to a GUI. The debian live will run the GUI desktop environment with the amd64 fail safe option. When I install debian from the live DVD (the 1.4gb DVD, vs the regular 4.0 gb DVD), it will hang before it gets to the GUI.

explain the following issue I have with Debian IA 64:I tried on a PC (Mobo Gigabyte G41M-ES2H, core 2 duo, 4 GB RAM DDR2) the live CD of Debian Lenny IA64 and everything worked just fine, which was a very good thing because none of all other major ia64/i386 distros of Linux (Mandrake, ubuntu, fedora) did so. In a nutshell it seems that the IGP G41 chipset is the cause of these setup failure (Everything is OK when using a PCI-e graphic card that I need in another computer)rd as someone (viewtopic.php?=17&t=49186&p=282839&hilit=G41M+ES2H#p282839) successfully installed Lenny on a very similar mobo. To go to the point what I do not understand is when I launch the iso Cd to now install the same version of Debian, everything freezes at the very beginning of the boot and the screen goes blank.

I just purchased a new PC with the following specs:
Intel Core i5-760
ASUS P5P55D-E LX (S1156 mobo)
Sapphire HD 5750 Vapor-X 1GB Video Card
Samsung 1TB HDD
Corsair DDR3 PC1333 Gaming RAM - 2x2GB
DVD: Samsung DVD burner (internal)
I have made several trials to install Lucid Lynx but all failed:
1. Installed Windows 7 64-bit, hdd formatted as NTFS and ext3, then trying to install Lucid Lynx 32-bit : failed.
2. Installed Windows XP 32-bit, hdd formatted as FAT32, then trying to install Lucid Lynx 32-bit : failed.
3. Trying to install Lucid Lynx 32-bit with a clean hdd formatted as FAT32: failed.
In all the scenarios above, I have tried using Ubuntu installers on CD, DVD, or USB. on CD and DVD, the process always stopped after the Ubuntu logo screen, not even reached the langauage selection screen. On USB, with Legacy set to On in the BIOS, it did run and started by the option screen where we get to choose booting from the usb, or booting from hdd, or memory test, etc., but after choosing the booting from usb (and then hdd also) option, the process also stopped after the Ubuntu logo screen. I have experience dual booting Windows XP with Lucid Lynx on an older system, so I'm not completely new in this. I'd like to know what actually went wrong?

I would like to know as to how to save a boot order sequence...In my desktop PC I have a gigabyte MOBO housing Pentium Dual Core processor...
Whenever I have to boot from an external USB , I have to press del at boot , go into CMOS features and change the Order of Booting 1-DVD 2 USB-FDD 3. USB-HDD 4. Local Hard Disk
The problem is that everytime I have to repeat the above to boot from USB...I am also confused between USB - HDD and USB - FDD...Some utils partition and use the USB like a HDD while it is not the case with FDD I guess
How do you freeze the boot order so that on inserting any USB / External HDD at boot , the system should give it the priority over local hard disk..
Also in Giga MOBO I noticed that there is no "generic USB" mentioned in BIOS...It lists the USB device by name say "Kingston Data Traveler " "Sandisk Micro" etc ....
What should I do to make the boot order permanent?

In Linux, passing "pci=nomsi" to the kernel before it boots generally helps it "find the hard drive". In windows however, it wont even install. It loads all the components then when it says its starting Windows, it comes up with an error, just gives a code, no explanation. Now granted this has more to do with Windows then Linux but there is no forum for that here and this is related. I wanted to try and run some games that would not work under wine nor virtualbox, so i shrunk my partition to make room for XP and it wouldn't install. If you're just going to lecture me on the lack of need for windows please to not respond to this. The specific motherboard is:

I replaced my motherboard and processor but am keeping my old hard drive without reformatting it. Things work well except that I cannot connect to the internet. I am thinking that I just need to reconfigure the connection to see the new network hardware. I tried /etc/init.d/networking restart but that doesn't do anything. What am I missing? By the way it is a wired connection - not wireless.

I down loaded Debian 5.0.4 and burned it to CD (several times I might add till it was right) and now the computer I'm putting it on wont acknowledge it as a boot disk and load. It does not have a problem with my windows cd, which has a crack and the start of all my problems, But not the Debian CD-1 disk. what now? The computer is an IBM thinkpad a22p. Everything works as far as I can tell. But I was going to reinstall Windows and failed in that because of a small crack on the edge of the disk that stopped the install and any hope of accessing the file on the laptop. Microsoft does not support windows xp any longer, you must buy windows 7, but the ibm will not run it due to processor speed and ram limitations. But it will run linux and I'm willing to try it just to get out of microsoft control.
Idon't know what else to do. This is the link to where I downloaded the software ( [URL] ). The others five that i downloaded were on the same page that I got this one. Are there bad files here? Is there a missing file in the disc?

Somehow Fedora 12 does not find one of my Sata drives (Seagate Barracuda 500GB) on the motherboard (Asus P5Q pro). The drive is attached to SATA_E1, which is a Silicon Image Serial ATA RAID connector. The drive currently has Windows Vista 64-bit OS which has been working fine. Fedora install loads correctly without errors, but only shows my RAID system on SATA ports 1-6.
WHAT I HAVE TRIED:
I have tried showing RAID as IDE in the BIOS, and setting it to compatible mode. Still does not detect.
I have tried setting the drives to ACPI mode in BIOS. No effect.
OTHER INFO:
I'm installing the x86_64 version of Fedora 12. I have run the Debian i686 installer and it picks up this volume without issue.

I have 10.04 LTS installed onto an SSD and have a spinning disk for crud, and my brother wants to give me his old GA-PH67A-UD3 and 8GB of RAM if I buy an i7 2600 to put in it. The thing is, I'm happy with my GA-965P-DS3 with Q6600, so I don't actually need an upgrade. So, can I get away with replacing the mobo, chip, and RAM and putting the SSD in the equivalent SATA port on the new mobo (/dev/sda), and will it cope? Will the kernel detect a new board and chip and carry on accordingly? I'll have to remount my crud drive to the same mount point it expects, and if my user account as the same UID as the old system, I'm hoping that might cope, too. Of course, I might be suggesting complete evil, and if this was Windows, I wouldn't even dare think about it, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Linux might cope with this kind of change where Windows would fall over in a heap.

When I tried to run the fedora 12 disk setup (iso), instead of having the nice fedora logo I quickly get tetxt lines showing all my sata disks and USB card readers properly detected though... and the instal freezes. This PC is a mobo Gigabyte G41m-ES2h with 2x500 GB WD disk... Very basic config with a wolfdale 2.93 GHz + 4 GB DDR2 ram... I don't quite understand as Ubuntu 9.1 setup does the same thing whereas "superGRUB" launched from a CD detects my disks & partitions normally.
This fedora 12 disk is ok (fedora 12 installed on 2 other laptops in dual boot) and on the first satat disk there is a Vista. Really don't get it but isolinux has had sometimes issues with sata disks on some of my previous PCs.

Is it possible to install Windows XP on a machine that already has Debian 7.8? I find lots of articles on installing Debian after but not before XP.
I would like to get a prompt at startup to select Windows XP or Debian 7.8 and then choose which one I want. The reason I want to do that is because I have Guitar Pro on XP and cant find anything as good and also I want to watch Netflix and cant seem to be able to find a way to do that on Debian 7.8 except windows emulator which defeats the point of Debian anyway. Also my Epson V500 will not work on Debian 7.1 and I have tried everything, been to Epson, installed drivers etc..

Another update
/boot/efi/EFI/debian looks like; grubx64.efi initrd.img-3.16.0-4-amd64 vmlinuz-3.16.0-4-amd64
I tried the following
Code: Select all# efibootmgr -c -g -L "Debian (EFI stub)" -l 'EFIdebiangrubx64.efi' -u 'root=UUID=$UUID ro quiet rootfstype=ext4 add_efi_memmap initrd=EFIdebianinitrd.img-3.16.0-4-amd-64'
efibootmgr: Could not set variable Boot0005: No such file or directory
efibootmgr: Could not prepare boot variable: No such file or directory
When I start the computer with the "Refind media" it gives me 3 options where the first is"Boot EFIdebiangrubx64.efi from 510 Mib Fat Volume" If I choose this option it takes me to grub via eufi(?) and then I can get into my computer as usual.How can I make my computer understand that it should recognize and boot from EFIdebiangrubx64.efi, 510 Mib Fat Volume?
The installation of the latest stable on my Lenovo G505s went just fine in UEFI mode but when the installation finished I never reach grub during the bootup process. I put Refind media onto a usb stick and boot into my computer using it after that I tried to follow this guide URL...
Code: Select all[ -d /sys/firmware/efi ] && echo "EFI boot on HDD" || echo "Legacy boot on HDD" EFI boot on HDD and Code: Select all apt-get install --reinstall grub-efi went just fine and I have /dev/sda1 mounted on /boot/efi but when I try grub-install I get
Code: Select allgrub-install /dev/sda
Installing for x86_64-efi platform.
efibootmgr: Could not set variable Boot0005: No such file or directory
efibootmgr: Could not prepare boot variable: No such file or directory
Installation finished. No error reported.

I net-installed Sid with unetbootin. Nothing special, I used the whole drive for the partition, no customization, said yes to grub and the mbr, and rebooted after I was told to.
Nothing but a blank blinking cursor after the BIOS readings. really nothing. I assume this means that something is not beginning grub. I'm pretty naive with booting, so that's all I really understand.
I put Gujin on a thumbdrive, and that enables me to boot into the system, and all works fine from there. It's just that I have no idea how to fix it so that I don't need to use my gujin thumbdrive every time. I figure it has something do with grub and chroot, but I really have no idea.

I am trying to install debian on a compaq presario 6000. When I try to boot off of the first dvd it just won't do anyting most of the time; one flat line keeps blinking. The first time that I booted it, there was that line that starts with isolinux, but that was only there the first time. now nothing shows up.That first time, I got several error messages: EDD: error 8000 reading sector 1360652 and the same thing 5 times over with different numbers at the end. Do these mean that the disc is corrupt in some way, or that the dvd reader is broken or something else?

I thought I'd breathe some new life into my aging PowerMac G5 desktop computer by installing debian. I burned the CD and ran the installer and everything installed okay, but when I went to boot it up for the first time, the screen blacked out after a few seconds of scrolling text and shows no signs of life after that. The computer just stops sending video to the monitor, and the only thing I can do is shut it down by holding down the power key.

I installed lenny and now my windows 7 won't boot. When I select it in Grub the machine just restarts the bios after a few seconds of black screen. The machine I'm using is a very vanilla intel p4.
I'll paste my /boot/grub/menu.lst below. All of the drive options look correct. I properly shutdown Windows 7 before installing lenny. I'm sure I can reinstall the mbr and get my windows back, but I would like to dual boot with grub.

I have a Dell laptop (inspiron 1150) which was dual booting Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.04. I have successfully installed Debian Jessie Standard over the Ubuntu. I pre-partitioned using gparted-live to make a separate single partition for the Debian install. Guided partitioning was then carried out by the installer producing separate /, /home, and swap partitions. After installation, the grub menu shows an entry for Debian and Windows XP. I can boot Debian, but not Windows XP. The symptoms are the same as reported in other forums: A terminal is displayed, vanishes and the system reboots defaulting to the Debian boot.
The grub.cfg file for the Jessie system has an other-os entry:
Code: Select allmenuentry "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (on /dev/sda2)" {
set root=(hostdisk//dev/sda, msdos2)
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root cc0ce0ab0ce091ae
drivemap -s (hd0) ${root}
chainloader +1
}
The original Windows entry for the Ubuntu install was:
Code: Select allmenuentry "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (on /dev/sda2)" {
insmod ntfs
set root=(hd0,2)
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set cc0ce0ab0ce091ae
drivemap -s (hd0) ${root}
chainloader +1
}
The partitions produced by partman look OK (during the pre-partitioning I did not touch sda1, sda2, or sda3):
Code: Select all~ # fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 37.3 GiB, 40007761920 bytes, 78140160 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
[Code] .....
Partition table entries are not in disk order.
The os-prober found XP:
Code: Select all~ # os-prober
/dev/sda2:Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition:Windows:chain
So it seems that everything is in place, but there are perhaps important differences in the grub.cfg files. Are the two "set root" commands equivalent for example?

System is hanging during boot after a successful fresh install via netinstall disk. Never makes it to any GUI or prompt. However, it does still respond to CTRL-ALT-DEL (not completely frozen).Default debian installation with one exception - KDE checkbox was checked for installation. Everything else was default, with "use full disk with GRUB" option chosen.The boot process appears to hang during the service starts. It appears that the start job for "Create Static De..." is not actually ever completing. I don't know how to troubleshoot that any further than I have.
This is running on hardware, it is not a virtual machine. 480GB SSD, i7, 16GB of RAM, AMD R9 390 (I dunno if this is the problem, but it seems a likely culprit).There are no other disks attached. I have verified successful memtest completions (0 failures) and hard disk is intact and working fine (I have swapped for another disk, and the same thing happens as well).
My skill level with Linux is relatively low. I have proficiency using it and programming for it, but not much in the way of troubleshooting/ installation/ drivers.
Here is an album of "screenshots" (phone photos) of the boot sequence in debug: URL....I tried booting straight to console by removing "quiet" from boot options and changing to "text", but it does not alter the outcome in any discernible way.

I just installed Debian Testing on an encrypted partition (using the encryption feature in the installer). Problem is when I boot I enter the passphrase and then Debian starts to load a bit and then it stops and won't move again. During a normal boot the boot stops after : EDAC sbridge : Couldn't find mci handler Then do a recovery mode boot from grub loader so more information is displayed during the boot time and it stops after : [12.513770] fb: switching to nouveaufb from simple it stops there I can't type anything, I can reboot the computer with ctrl+alt+del tho
I was booting just fine in a previous installation on a MBR-partitioned disk (now it's GPT-partitioned). I have to add that during installation I added a second encrypted volume on a HDD (while / is on a SSD) that mounts to /data. When few days ago I installed it on the MBR-partitioned disk it asked me for the /data passphrase pretty fast, now it just seems to boot and asks me only one passphrase until it freezes.

I recently installed debian on my ibook G4, but when I start up the computer, it doesn't boot into Xorg. When I tried to start Xorg, it says that it is not installed. How would I install it, and how would I start it? When I do the apt-get install xorg, it doesn't work. Right now I'm running ubuntu on it, but I really want just plain debian, as I really dont need all of the bells and whistles that Ubuntu offers. I just need something to do schoolwork on (I'm a highschool sophmore), and I don't want to use OS X for that as I like linux better (specifically debian and ubuntu).

'rolling' release as redoing install /upgrade every 6 months is getting 'old' My machine is triple boot
Hard drive is 320 GB
Windows 7 - 167 GB
Ubuntu - Maverick - 73 GB
Ubuntu - Natty - testing version - 65 GB
I do not want to screw up my 'grub' as it's been trashed a couple of times recently and had to re-install everything, which went great with install setting up partitions. I am not sure where 'grub' is installed to. I did install Windows 7 first then let installer split hard drive in half to put Ubuntu on then while installing my second Ubuntu, I let installer split the Ubuntu partition in half, hence the 167 GB Windows and the 2 smaller partitions for Ubuntu.I was thinking to maybe let Debian install over my Maverick install. Would that work and not mess up my Grub and cause me to not be able to boot and have to fix the drama?

I performed an install using the 5.0.6 amd64 netinst cd on a dual opteron server with an Areca ARC-1110 4-port SATA hardware RAID card. I have 2 250GB drives set up as RAID 1. The debian install saw it as only one drive, just as it should. Install went smoothly, but on reboot, the system would not load.
I did some research and tried a couple of things with no luck. Like adding a delay in the grub command. It jus sits at loading system for a while then times out and loads busy box. Just to check things out, I booted into an Ubuntu live-cd and mounted the volume. The file system is there and all of the necessary files. How to use one of these cards successfully?

I installed jessie amd64 lxde to a thumb drive to use with a laptop. Vanilla install using the amd64 lxde live cd. Upon booting the usb system, I am presented with a black screen with blinking cursor. No grub screen, no ability to type any commands and no ability to switch to another terminal. I tried booting into the live cd and I could get into the intro splash screen. Booting to the live system from there would also hang at a black screen.
However, using the kernel parameter "nomodeset" from the splash screen did allow the live system to boot to the desktop. I booted the live system, mounted the usb system and chrooted into it. I edited /etc/default/grub to include "nomodeset" in the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT and GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX variables and then ran update-grub.
Upon reboot to the usb system the problem still occurred. The video card in question is a amd firepro 5800m which has an lspci line of mobile radeon 5000 series. This card was supported in wheezy and apparently works with the live system.
