I have Debian and I see that exim is installed on it. I want to make my own home mail server, but with postfix. Do I have to remove exim first and then install potfix or what?

Server :: Converting Exim Mail To Postfix?

May 22, 2010

We moved over from Cpanel using Exim. I was wondering if anyone knew of way to convert the mail so when a user logs in they get to all their mail in their folders. I notice exim has a ton of folders while postfix creates files that act like folders which contain all the emails. I sent up 1 of the emails into the our mail folder that was created by Exim and it can be Subscribed to in Outlook with imap but the emails inside doesn't show up. They both appear as text files so I don't know what the difference is.

Debian :: Fresh 5.0 Install And 'upgrade' Installs Exim?

Feb 2, 2011

After logging into a fresh Debian 5.0 (lenny) install from a VPS (virtual private server) provider, I run 'apt-get update' and then 'apt-get upgrade' in attempt to get all the security updates, assuming that's what said commands do. Along the way exim (exim4) and possibly other programs (not confirmed) gets installed and is setup to run on bootup...despite it not being installed previously. Why is this? I would expect that either 1) previously uninstalled pkgs are not installed with the 'upgrade," or 2) if 'upgrade' essentially performing a "install everything that's not already installed" maneuver, I wonder why it's not installing a LOT more packages (then just the view I see installed on my system during the 'upgrade.')

Separately: can someone confirm an 'apt-get update' followed by apt-get upgrade' on a fresh Debian 5.0 install system will basically upgrade to 5.0.8 ("current rev level" for lenny)?

I haven't used Debian in 1 year or so and would like to know if there is any possible way to do a fresh installation of Debian Lenny or Squeeze (either or) and not install Exim? I get to the package selection section of the Debian Installer and I de-select "Desktop Environment" & "Standard System" so nothing is selected and it still be default installs Exim. Is there a way to omit this from the install?

Debian :: Get Exim To Use The Correct Domain Name?

Apr 20, 2010

I got this bounceback recently and I'm unsure of how to correct the problem. A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed: [withheld]@sbcglobal.net SMTP error from remote mail server after MAIL FROM:<www-data@localhost> SIZE=2011: host sbcmx3.prodigy.net [207.115.21.22]: 553 5.5.4 <www-data@localhost>... Real domain name required for sender address

The headers for the offending message are as follows:

[Code]....

What's interesting is that in some places the correct domain is given, but the return-path and the envelope-from are set incorrectly. I should add a few things: this machine is used only to send email newsletters and for email generated by the websites; staff email is handled elsewhere the output of hostname is myhost the output of hostname -f is myhost.mydomain.net when I ran dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config, I set the system mail name to "localhost" so as to "'qualify' mail addresses without a domain name." I have a feeling this is the source of my problem, but when I set this to mydomain.net, I ran into another problem: I essentially disabled local mail. Messages to root (e.g., the results of cron jobs) would show up in my logs as root@mydomain.net. I want local mail to follow the rules set forth in /etc/aliases, not be converted to local-account@mydomain.net.

Debian Configuration :: Exim Ignoring External Connections?

I have exim setup on squeeze to run as an "internet site". Outgoing mail works fine but it seems to just ignore incoming smtp requests on port 25. I can see the incoming connection via tcpdump but exim doesn't seem to talk. If I connect via telnet it rather quickly says connection refused. Is there something additional I need in the Exim conf?

Debian :: Why Extra Packages (Exim) Installed On System

Oct 17, 2010

Install One :
Installed Debian Squeeze onto my laptop using the netinst cd. During installation, I did not have access to the internet and installed "Standard System" during tasksel.

Install Two :
Installed Debian Sqeeze onto my desktop using the same netinst cd. However, this time I had connected the desktop to my router during installation. Similary installed "Standard System".

Both system later installed with KDE and working fine. Noticed that immediate after installation of the "Standard System", my desktop had more files installed eg. the exim package. Why the extra packages (eg exim) are installed? Are they actually required?

CentOS 5 :: Switch From The Default Sendmail To Postfix Doing A Yum Install Postfix On 5.2

Dec 12, 2008

I have isntalled a server with Centos 5.2 OS, now I would like to switch from the default sendmail to postfix doing a yum install postfix I've noticed there is already available an rpm version for the OS but I would like to compile my own 2.5 version, I've noticed compiling from source does not allow me to use the mail switcher to tell to the system I'm gonna use Postfix instead of Sendmail as the default MTA while this is possible when I use the "official" rpm version of the package. Now my question is this, would this be a problem? There is some specific procedure/best practice I should follow? Or once compiled and configured Postfix I can safely disable/uninstall sendmail?

CentOS 5 :: Use RAID Without Exim?

Apr 7, 2009

I installed CentOS 3 and during the installation, I configured the disks using 'software RAID'. Then I installed my /data partion on /dev/md0. Everything seemed fine however I install a extremely bare installation of CentOS 5.3. I don't select any packages during the install process which includes anything under the 'base' package software selection. I then noticed that because I configured my system with 'software RAID', it found 'mdadm' as a dependency package and installed 'mdadm' however this also then grabbed 'exim-mta' package so now I have 1/2 a mail server installed simply because I have software RAID on my box. I am not permitted to have anything beyond 'Postfix' MTA on my LAN. I don't want Postfix any ways on this machine so is there a way I can install CentOS 5.3 cleanly w/o packages I don't want or need? I am sure I can 'yum remove exim' and that in turn will remove 'exim & mdadm' from my machine however I would like to start fresh.

However there is something wrong as when i run postfix: service postfix server i get no error but when checking the status:service postfix status i get: master dead but pid file exists Looking into /var/log/mailog i find this line being the issue:

I gather this is a file permission issue and ive tried to make sure the public folder in /var/spool/postfix is correctly set but still no avail.

Debian Configuration :: Postfix Bad IP Syntax Support

Apr 23, 2016

I have currently configured Postfix as an SMTP server. I would preferably not use a domain name in my email address, like so: myname@[1.2.3.4]

I'm currently testing to see how other mail servers handle this kind of address. When I sent a mail with one one of my gmail accounts, I see that the mail gets rejected due to bad syntax.

It seems as though Google is giving me a RCPT TO address like so: myname@1.2.3.4 However, the postfix server rejects this address with the following error:

501 5.1.3 Bad recipient address syntax

To my best knowledge the only way to have an IP address inside an email address with to write it as a domain literal [1.2.3.4].

My question: how to configure postfix to accept myname@1.2.3.4 as well?

I have put both [1.2.3.4] and 1.2.3.4 in "mydestination" and 1.2.3.4 in "virtual_alias_domains".

It doesn't seem to work so far though.
