It's been awhile since last dealt with Debian.
I'm setting up mail server on Debian 5.04
So I need exim4-daemon-heavy, I removed exim4-daemon-light and can't find heavy, in fact can't find any exim package.
Exim: Is there away to block command when someone telnets to exim's port? Email won't send out unless they authenticate, but if there a way to total block them from typing all together, but still allow the server to receive email? IE, to block this:

Is there any possibility, how to find out, from which repository the package come from?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Debian 6.0 KDE after the install was completed i logged in to my freshly install KDE and started looking for the package manager or Debian software center but it's not there so i went to terminal and had a go at getting it on. Here is my extremley poor terminal work

I need to install build-essential which needs for it g++ package which needs for it gcc package 4.3.2-2 and for this I need gcc-4.3 4.3.2-1 and I can't find this package anywhere. I keep finding gcc-4.3 4.3.2-1.1 but after I install it it doesn't help me and gcc 4.3.2-2 still requests gcc-4.3 4.3.2-1.

I have emacs and ess running on this box code...
I need a particular include file. I know the file name. I don't know which package would install it. apt-cache seems to only search names and descriptions. dpkg -S seems to only search through installed packages. I need to find a package that's not yet installed. I probably just missed the option in the man page... or I don't know which program to man.

What's interesting is that in some places the correct domain is given, but the return-path and the envelope-from are set incorrectly. I should add a few things: this machine is used only to send email newsletters and for email generated by the websites; staff email is handled elsewhere the output of hostname is myhost the output of hostname -f is myhost.mydomain.net when I ran dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config, I set the system mail name to "localhost" so as to "'qualify' mail addresses without a domain name." I have a feeling this is the source of my problem, but when I set this to mydomain.net, I ran into another problem: I essentially disabled local mail. Messages to root (e.g., the results of cron jobs) would show up in my logs as root@mydomain.net. I want local mail to follow the rules set forth in /etc/aliases, not be converted to local-account@mydomain.net.
I have Debian and I see that exim is installed on it. I want to make my own home mail server, but with postfix. Do I have to remove exim first and then install potfix or what?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to use Debian Stable with some newer upstream packages. I've got the upstream Firefox tarball unbacked in /home/firefox/. The problem is that it can't find any plugins, flash or anything else. It's the 64 bit binary but still needed some 32 bit libraries to run. Does it need 32 bit plugins?
Iceweasel is uninstalled and and I deleted it's ./mozilla/ directory. I tried creating a /home/.mozilla/plugins/ directory and symlinking plugins into that and pretty much any other conceivable path where it could be looking for them.
I run upstream firefox from /home/ in the past and had no problems.
I'm am very new at debian. I have tried to use the apt install to install java-package an fake root after it says cannot find java-package also fake root doesn't work?

i just got debian lenny installed on my machine, i cant get flash to work with iceweasell so i thought id try and install firefox but i cant seem to find it anywhere in the debian package manager, ive tried usign the following guides;[URL]i still havent been able to achive my goal
View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter logging into a fresh Debian 5.0 (lenny) install from a VPS (virtual private server) provider, I run 'apt-get update' and then 'apt-get upgrade' in attempt to get all the security updates, assuming that's what said commands do. Along the way exim (exim4) and possibly other programs (not confirmed) gets installed and is setup to run on bootup...despite it not being installed previously. Why is this? I would expect that either 1) previously uninstalled pkgs are not installed with the 'upgrade," or 2) if 'upgrade' essentially performing a "install everything that's not already installed" maneuver, I wonder why it's not installing a LOT more packages (then just the view I see installed on my system during the 'upgrade.')
Separately: can someone confirm an 'apt-get update' followed by apt-get upgrade' on a fresh Debian 5.0 install system will basically upgrade to 5.0.8 ("current rev level" for lenny)?
I have exim setup on squeeze to run as an "internet site". Outgoing mail works fine but it seems to just ignore incoming smtp requests on port 25. I can see the incoming connection via tcpdump but exim doesn't seem to talk. If I connect via telnet it rather quickly says connection refused. Is there something additional I need in the Exim conf?

I run OSX on my everyday computer so this is not me sending out stuff since the above mail says Microsoft Outlook express has sent it (?) Running a Debian Squeeze server. And I really dont get any other spam due to exim4u setup and spamassasin.
Install One :
Installed Debian Squeeze onto my laptop using the netinst cd. During installation, I did not have access to the internet and installed "Standard System" during tasksel.
Install Two :
Installed Debian Sqeeze onto my desktop using the same netinst cd. However, this time I had connected the desktop to my router during installation. Similary installed "Standard System".
Both system later installed with KDE and working fine. Noticed that immediate after installation of the "Standard System", my desktop had more files installed eg. the exim package. Why the extra packages (eg exim) are installed? Are they actually required?

I'm trying to follow the exim documentation to allow suffixes on mailboxes for all users. For example, if user@domain is a mailbox, I want all mail directed to user-*@domain to be delivered user@domain. I've got the split-config-files option and have edited /etc/exim4/conf.d/router/600 to include local_part_suffix lines as follows:

Well the topic name says it all. I only installed the base system and when I try "apt-get install gnome" it tells me it can't find package "gnome".Now, I'm actually to much of a noob to try to build my own Debian from the base system and up. But it still seems to be the easiest option.When I try "Debian GNU/Linux on CDs" I can't get online. I start Iceweasl but it just gives me that message telling me that it can't find the website I tried to enter (e.g www.google.com).When I try the net install I get "Bad Archive Mirror" at the configure apt part. I've tried searching your forums for this and it seems to happen to a lot of people but I still can't find a solution in any of those threads
View 8 Replies View RelatedI haven't used Debian in 1 year or so and would like to know if there is any possible way to do a fresh installation of Debian Lenny or Squeeze (either or) and not install Exim? I get to the package selection section of the Debian Installer and I de-select "Desktop Environment" & "Standard System" so nothing is selected and it still be default installs Exim. Is there a way to omit this from the install?

tcl version is 8.5 whilst tk is 8.4.16-2 and tklib is 0.5-2. It seems that tcl is not able to find tklib so I wonder if there is a way to tell tll where to find the package.
