Debian :: How To Create A Package

Jun 13, 2010

I would like to know how to create a package properly. Because, in Wine website, the latest .deb is for Wine 1.1.42 and now there is Wine 1.2-rc3.

I know that i can install Wine with the source and these command : ./configure make make install

doesn't want to compile Wine source (brr it's terrible), it's simpler to install the lastest Wine version with the package.

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Create Debian Package

Jan 18, 2010

Every time i start with a new installation, i have to download all the useful software once again...

i think it would be simple and easy-to-use if these software could be bundled into debian packages which can be installed just by clicking (like in windows)...

Is there any website where I can find debian packages for important software? Or can I create them myself...

General :: How To Create Debian / Ubuntu Package

Jul 12, 2010

I tried following this tutorial on how to create a Debian/Ubuntu package and ran into the following stumbling block: When I tried installing debmake (a tool to easily create Debian packages; trying to debian-package a jhbuild prefix and upload it to a PPA) I got an error from APT saying that the package was not found.After an extensive Google search, I noticed that the package was only used in Ubuntu up to Hardy and after that was deprecated. Why? Did dpkg-dev suddenly include the deb-make command in its package or something?

After reading the deprecation announcement on the mailing list located in the Google search it seems as though debhelper replaces debmake.

Ubuntu :: Create An Rsyslog Config For A Software Package?

Jun 7, 2011

I have been trying to create an rsyslog config for a software package that I use. I want to use the local7 facility for this package, and split the messages according to priority across several files. I would like the config to be a file which can just be dropped into rsyslog.d without having to modify the rsyslog.conf or 50-defaults.conf. I created a file called 40-test.conf, in which I have the following:

local7.none /var/log/messages
local7.none /var/log/syslog
local7.=info -/var/log/test.info
local7.=debug -/var/log/test.debug
local7.=notice;local7.=warning -/var/log/test.notice
local7.=err -/var/log/test.error

I am getting the correct local7 messages in the correct 'test' files, but i am also still getting local7 messages in /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog, so it seems the local7.none has no effect. Is this the correct method of achieving what I want? What am I doing wrong?

General :: Create Linux-libc-dev Package When Compile Ubuntu Kernel?

May 6, 2011

I've compiled the last stable ubuntu kernel (2.6.38-...) following this guide: How to compile a Ubuntu 10.10 kernel but in this guide doesn't explain how create linux-libc-dev package for that kernel? How do I do?

I've tried with fakeroot debian/rules binary-arch-headers but it returns an, IMHO, absurd error:

mkdir /home/simon/sources/kernel/ubuntu-natty/debian/linux-libc-dev/usr/include/
mkdir: cannot create directory `/home/simon/sources/kernel/ubuntu-natty/debian/linux-libc-dev/usr/include/': File exists
make: *** [install-arch-headers] Error 1

The error is correct but this folder is created in the same process!

Debian :: Debian Synaptic Package Manager Error: Xserver-xorg Stripped?

Feb 10, 2011

I have used Debian Linux for two years, most recently the seventh or so iteration of Version 5. I use the Gnome desktop and the Synaptic Package Manager, not the Update Manager, for updates because it's easier to build a log with the former.In my most recent update, Synaptic stripped out all the xserver-xorg files47 in all. I thought it peculiar but did not know enough to interfere. When I rebooted, the system told me I must install xserver or correct GDM configuration and restart.

Have I been hacked? Am I being tested by the Linux Illuminati? Or does it have something to do with the warning message I received at the end of the update-upgrade, attached? And how do I go about reinstalling xserver? With Aptitude? I have tried running apt-get -f install, to no effect.

I recently tossed Ubuntu for Debian Unstable for my personal machines and I'm having trouble building Emerald into a package. I've already configured and installed the package (using the usual ./configure, make, make install) but I wanted to make a deb for future use (for myself and for others). However every time I try to run dpkg-build I get the following error message.

dh_install: emerald missing files (usr/bin/*), aborting
make: *** [binary-install/emerald] Error 2

Ubuntu Servers :: Create A New Server Package And Leave Minimal Minimal?

Feb 17, 2010

After a long time I tried ubuntu(9.10) again on my fileserver, I have some remarks; why does a minimal server installation include X/openoffice? I don't need document conversion on a fileserver and I bet a lot of people don't. Wouldn't it be better to create a new server package and leave minimal minimal? low memory installs (64mb) don't work unless you configure swap by hand in between things, 64mb ram is a lot in my eyes. I mean, not to be rude but if I wanted all this I could've better installed Solaris.

That said it's stable and running fine. Since it's my home fileserver I tried to convert my previously created raid10 mirror on an adaptec 1200 card to a softraid 5 solution. This is wat I did:

Debian :: Nfsen Debian/ubuntu Package?

May 8, 2011

why nfsen has no debian/ubuntu package ? It's a really cool web frontend to nfdump/fprobe and it seems a lot of people are using it. I found the following references, so the installation seems well documented [URL]... But a package is more than install (management, update, repair, ...). It seems a package was in progress but never commited. [URL]... Does someone knows why? I checked a bit of documentation about debian packaging [URL]... but it seems not really useful for web front end and perl install.pl script.

Debian :: Name Of Old GUI Package Manager?

I'm rebuilding my system and I didn't want to install Synaptic right now because it had some broken dependencies. It's just a recommended package so I actually could install it but then I remembered that old GUI package manager that was very good but searching packages.debian.org and the Debian manual/reference I didn't find anything. It had a bland name like 'package manager' or something like that. Would it have been removed from the repo?

Debian :: APT Always Installing The Same Package?

Feb 23, 2010

I'm experiencing a strange behavior from apt on my Debian 4 etch installation.

Sometime ago I installed XMailServer on it, and so far so good, it is working quite fine and no issue at all here. However since this installation apt got crazy and now each time I install something else it goes and installs xmail again. This creates the issue that everytime I add or remove a package xmail gets unconfigured and I've to delete spool and recreate the domains.

Sort of:

apt-get install somePackage ....regular messages if something else is needed to be downloaded... then installs xmailserver again for no reason at all giving a whole load of "file already exists" errors while rewrite xmail's config.

Already tried apt-get clean, apt-get autoclean, purge/remove -> reinstall sequence, delete the .deb package from apt's cache. But still no luck, apt insists into reinstall it everytime I want to install anything else.

Any place I can edit to make apt stop doing this?

Debian :: Using A Lenny Package In Squeeze?

Jul 5, 2010

I am currently running Debian Lenny on one of my external HDDs and Debian Squeeze on the other one. I found a package I like in lenny but it seems it has not been added to squeeze (yet). The package is ksirc and i like it because it looks and feels like mIRC that I used in windows. My question is can I install the lenny version on squeeze with out it having an adverse effect? My other question is what do I put into the /etc/apt/sources.list to do this? i now see that ksirc is also available in a sid (unstable) version. Is it safe to install this one to my squeeze distro? and again what do I need to add to my sources.list to do this?

Or could I just download the deb package and install it using dpkg? New to this and just looking for the best way to get a favorite software package.

Debian :: Multiple Versions Of A Same Package?

Aug 22, 2010

On my lenny+backports+debianmultimedia desktop I see two annoyances. 1st: There are multiple versions of same packages. But while attempting to remove the older versions I see apt-get is removing some essential packages. Is there any way to kill this duplicacy of packages? Here is a list of packages whose multiple instances are installed:

xulrunner-1.9.0.19-3
xulrunner-1.9.1.11-1~bpo50+1
cpp-4:4.3.2-2
cpp-4.3-4.3.4-6~bpo50+1
g++-4:4.3.2-2
g++-4.3-4.3.4-6~bpo50+1

[Code]...

Note: Just for sanity's sake I want to remove the extra versions and disable that error message, except that I don't see any problem.

Debian :: Bug In Squeeze Package Syslinux?

Aug 29, 2010

I have been using Squeeze for a while and loving it.One handy utility is Unetbootin which I have been using to create bootable usb flash drives . Suddenly , some days ago - I couldn't boot with a newly created usb drive . The post boot screen is displayed and it hangs - tried Tiny Core linux , Debian installer and Freesco . I got my hands on a second flash drive and got the same error . After a lot of attempts I installed Lenny one of my older box and did the following ; Inserted the usb drive to my squeeze box and installed the image with Unetbootin Inserted the usb drive to my lenny box and ran syslinux /dev/sda1 Then the usb drive booted fine , in fact both drives booted fine . If I type syslinux /dev/sda1 on my squeeze box then the usb drive won't boot .From what I can understand there are different versions of syslinux ;

In Lenny 2:3.71+dfsg-5
In Squeeze 2:4.02+dfsg-3

What should I do about this - should I file a bug report ?
