Debian Hardware :: Unmute Front PC Phono Socket?

Sep 12, 2010

I recently purchased a Genius "SM-Live Value 5.1 Audio 5.1 Channel PCI Acceleration Card.". I see from the the User's Manual that it works with "Linux" and I'm pleased to confirm that it works very well with Debian Squeeze (although, after inserting the sound card in its slot, when I rebooted I got a dark sceen shortly after the Grub menu and the kernel wouldn't boot until I disabled the onboard codec in the BIOS).
The Genius soundcardI is recognized as:~$ lspci | grep audio03:01.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 10) The question is this: I get sound for either the speakers or the headphones by inserting their green phono plugs into the socket of the sound card at the back of my desktop computer but I don't get sound from the similar socket on the front. With the onboard audio device, the front socket works perfecly. At the moment, I'd like to have my two speakers permanenly plugged into the new soundcard at the back of the PC and reserve the front socket for the headphones. I'd also like to try "surround sound" some time. I've been digging around and found this ALSA Multi-channel Audio mini-HOWTO. But is all this somewhat convoluted configuration necessary just to unmute the front phono socket or am I missing a simpler solution?

Ubuntu :: Test Sound - No Application Sound Through Front Audio Socket - 10.04

Jun 22, 2011

Strange one. Just upgraded my mother-in-law's computer from 8.04 to 10.04 via the update manager. All seems to be working beautifully except ...

* When I run gstreamer-properties and do an output test I get a test sound through the headphones plugged into the front audio socket of the machine using the 'Analogue Headphones' setting in Sound Preferences. (This rules out dead headphones.)

* When I try to play audio through any app I get no sound through the headphones, but if I change the setting to 'Analogue Output' in Sound Preferences I get audio loud and clear through the speakers which are plugged into the audio socket at the rear of the machine. how the gstreamer-properties test is getting audio to the front socket I guess I'd be getting somewhere.

Debian Configuration :: Can't Unmute HDA Intel Sound Card?

Aug 3, 2010

According to HDA Analyzer, my sound card is muted; however, I can't unmute it through HDA Analyzer or anything else. According to alsamixer, everything is unmuted, though. According to the ALSA documentation, there's no 'model' id for my codec -- Conexant 5069 -- so I don't have an option to put in /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf. What can I do to unmute the card???

Here's the hardware: cat /proc/asound/cards:

HDA Intel at 0xd6400000 irq 34

Debian Multimedia :: Finding A GNOME/GTK CPUFreq Setting Front-end

Dec 25, 2010

Sometime back I installed cpufreq. Now while I know quite little about cpufreq, what little I understand tells me it can do two things :-

a. Give the user the capability to change frequencies - there is something called max frequencies and minimum frequencies and the user can play between them.

b. Show the cpufrequencies via the GNOME cpufreq plugin/applet.

Now while its able to show me the frequencies, I'm not able to find a GNOME or GTK front-end which I can use to set the frequencies. I did read a little bit about something called 'governers' which from what I learnt are something similar to profiles - as in you want to be conservative, powersave, ondemand and performance.

1. I'm looking for a Gnome-GTK CPU setting frequency GUI.

2. If somebody wants to share more info. about the whole cpu frequency thing that is also very welcome as I'm not really aware as to how can I do things a bit more intelligently so I'm able to get a bit more performance while not using much energy (can be done or cannot be done ?) but that discussion hopefully comes later after I've a tool through which I can do the same in GUI.

Debian Hardware :: Creative 4.1 Front Speaker Doesn't Work?

Jul 27, 2010

I have got a Creative X-fi gamer card. I have Creative 4.1 speakers. One of the front speaker doesn't work and I use one front and two rear and of course one subwoofer.

In Gnome, it works after I do few commands and all is well. But, in any other desktop environment only the front one speaker works and the rear two don't. Neither in KDE nor in XFCE or LXDE.

I am tearing my hairs on this. And it is indeed the same with other distributions.

Is it because now it has become actually 3.1 and channelling is not happening. But in Gnome they work.

Ubuntu :: Microphone Doesn't Work - Can't Unmute ?

Nov 14, 2010

I have a microphone perfectly working on windows but I'm not able to use it on Ubuntu 10.10 64bit. I can't either record a sound or use skype.

I've installed Gnome-Alsa and unmuted every slider I could unmute on Alsa. But if I go on "Sound Preferences, Input, Choose a device for sound input" there's nothing I can choose. And the "input volume" is gray and so the "mute" check-box.

I thought that it was a driver problem so I went to Asus website to download Audio driver for my mother board (Asus Rampage II Gene). I got a package with Alsa drivers so I think they're already in Ubuntu.

What should I try?

I can't believe that a simple microphone doesn't work in Ubuntu 10.10 with a quite new Asus motherboard. It works in windows!

OpenSUSE Install :: MySQL Socket Change For 11.2 / Get The Socket To /var/run/mysql?

May 25, 2010

In looking at the release notes, I saw the comment File locations changes:

* MySQL socket file and pid file were moved from /var/lib/mysql to more reasonable location /var/run/mysql by default.

* MySQL log files are in /var/log/mysql. Not sure what I was supposed to do with that information. So I ignored it. Now, I am finding some issues with it. The web server works, but any connection to the database fails with 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)The thought dawned on me that maybe all my databases were erased and none set up. Going in to the terminal, I could connect and list and query the databases. So even though I backed them up, they still are there!

phpMyAdmin gives the same error message.

However, when I go into MySQL Administrator, it works fine.

I forgot where I saw it, but the socket is still set to var/lib/mysql. I could not find any mysql install log and would say what was in my cnf.my, but it still doesn't exist just as it has not in the past. Not sure if I should allow the MySQL Administrator to create it since I always ignored the prompt in the past and it worked. (Just wishing to keep the defaults)

At first I thought the upgrade upgraded the MySQL, but it's still 5.1.39 as I believe before. I've un-installed mysql-server and re-installed it with no change.

Can anyone can tell me how to get the socket to /var/run/mysql or what else is wrong? I read one place where mysql is supposed to set it up.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Mute Using Keyboard Shortcut But Not Unmute On Opensuse 11.2?

I recently installed Opensuse 11.2 on my Acer 3680 laptop. One problem I have notice is that while I can mute my volume control using the keyboard shortcuts, I cannot unmute it using the keyboard short cut. When I press the keyboard shortcut, which is maped to XF86audiomute, it display the popup indicating that the control is unmute, the control is not really unmute. I can unmute it by using the volumen control in the system tray.

I am puzzled, this did not happen under Fedora 12 nor Linux Mint 8 / Ubuntu 9.10. What could be the cause of the issue and what can I do to locate the source of the problem?

Fedora :: No Input From Front Mic With F12?

But when I try to use the mic input on the front of my PC case, pulseaudio receives no signal from the microphone. Skype doesn't work, Audacity can't record anything either.

Everything is wired inside the case just fine, Windows XP has no problems in using the input on the front. Also the Line-out at the same panel on the front works in F12 without problems, it is just the mic input that doesn't work.
