Debian Hardware :: Network Not Works Not Under Win7?
Apr 4, 2011
It may be not correct place for asking but I will give a try. There is a "strange" problem with network on computer of my wife. Sometimes it works sometimes it does not (under WIN7), it complains that LAN cable is not plugged in. On the same computer it always works if I boot computer from Ubuntu CD. And it always works on my computer (Debian testing). Under Linux i can see intensive blinking of LAN card diodes, under windows it blinks few times and than stops. I have little, if any knowledge about LAN hardware. But based on what I see and same logic i supposed the following: Driver of network card is programed to recognize certain levels of signal, and probably in win driver those levels a set a bit higher than in linux. when because of some reasons signal in LAN cable goes below some level, the card under win7 cannot see the network.

I ping my router. If I keep my mouse moving (or i'm typing) I get a 5ms ping.If I stop typing/moving my mouse, it times out.
- I disabled NetworkManager for the inteface eth0 but it doesn't solve the problem.
- I'm having the same problem using a Ubuntu 15.01 bootable image
- I'm having the same problem usign an Ethernet PCI Adapter
- I'm having the same problem usign a Wifi PCI Adapter

There is something strange going on with Pidgin in Debian 6. I have just installed the system, then Pidgin, then configured my MSN accounts and chatted; but after rebooting, it no longer works. It just hangs while trying to connect - this is what I see from strace:
[Code].....
- a largish number of times. My very rough and ready thoughts about this so far are that it is probably not Pidgin that has an error, since 1) It worked initially, and 2) I am pretty sure the developers would have know about it very quickly if this was a general problem in Pidgin. On the other hand, my networking seems otherwise to be fine - s what is going on here?

Today I got my laptop back after its motherboard was replaced (soundcard failure) and I am having problems connecting to the internet. Connection to the wifi network is succesful, but Pidgin is not connecting ("SSL Connection Failed") and I can't view any webpages in Firefox. I loaded up Win7 and everything worked fine, connecting to the same wifi network and using the same proxy settings ("No Proxy").

To start off, I am about 3 days into my new ubuntu operating system. I am a complete newbie, but i have picked up alot in the last couple days. My sound was previously working, but the microphone was glitching when using skype. After running a bunch of different commands in terminal that were posted on forums from all over the internet, I rebooted my computer to find no sound. I have searched the forums again and tried many different command lines in terminal to no avail. My system setup is found here: [URL]

I have used ubuntu in the past but had a lot of hardware issues with it and unfortunately moved back to windows (( BUT i have tried Ubuntu again and all seems to work great except wifi My wifi connection is sort of working because when i run SUDO IWLIST SCAN it does pull up all available networks. But in the network manager icon on the panel i left click but i see no networks and can't connect to anything. I WOULD LOVE TO keep Ubuntu and use it permanently but I must get wifi working or else this won't be possible.

I have created a small network using Win7 (not a home network, it's a workplace network), but cannot see the Win7 machine from my Linux box (openSUSE 11.3 32 bit). I am getting the error message "Empfangen der Speicherliste vom Server ist gescheitert" ("couldn't receive storage list from server" or so), wenn I try to connect via "Locations -> Server -> Windows Network -> 172.168.178.2 (which is the Win7 machines local IP address).
Disabling the firewall doesn't help.
My setup is a DSL router to which all my computers are connected.
Despite searching the inet for hours I couldn't find a solution.
Another problem is that from the Win7 machine I can only access the public folders on the Linux machine using the root login (not the user I used to make the folders public).

I've got my server mostly configured with Samba file shares - I can access from Linux and OSX computers. I've enabled Samba Clietn and Sambar server in the openSUSE firewall settings (on the server), but Windows 7 can't seem to connect. I've been trying to tweak registry keys in Windows and such, but had no luck. However, when I turned off the firewall on the server, I was instantly able to connect. Is there some other service or port I need to open for Windows 7?

I have a HP c4100 series printer connected to my Ubuntu computer. This computer prints just fine. I also have a Windows Vista computer that's connected to the Ubuntu HP via CUPS (by installing network printer with path of http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:631/printers/printername). This computer also prints just fine. My problem is I just got a new Windows 7 laptop, and connected it to the HP via CUPS the same way as the Vista machine. It installed fine. However the Win7 Laptop will not print. When I try to print, it acts like it is going to print, but never gives an error and the file never makes it into the printer queue (on either the win7 or ubuntu machines, i have tried printing with both queues open to see what happens).
Things I have already changed:
On the Ubuntu machine:Changed all the printer settings on printer to allow any and all connections including printing from the internet.
Edited the /etc/samba/smb.conf to allow CUPS printing and allow guest access
On the Win7 machine:Fixed my LAN security settings (disabled require 128bit encryption, send LM and NTLM responses)
Reinstalled printer several times. I have googled this issue almost every day for a month and tried every setting that I have came across (changed them back if it didn't help). So far nothing has worked for me, and this is my last ditch effort to get this printer working. Does anyone know why I can not print from my Windows 7 machine to a printer connected to my Ubuntu machine? Especially when I CAN print from the UBUNTU and Vista machines.

Have followed swerdna's guide as in the past and my wife from her win7 computer can see and has read write access to all the shares & can print to the shared printer attached to the Opensuse computer etc. However, when I try to access her Win7 shares from my opensuse computer I am presented with a username / password prompt. Here is my smb.conf

have followed swerdna's guide (as mentioned previously) and set 'password protected sharing' to off on the win7 computer.

Im a long time Ubuntu user (since 5.04), but networks were never my speciality, I have a desktop running 10.10, connected to the internet trough a US robotics modem (connection eth1), and i want to share its network with my laptop running win7, over a cat5 cable (connection eth0), but the problem is I dont seem to understand what i am doing wrong, what the missing steps required, or in which end is the problem (either ubuntu or windows side).
From what I could grasp was needed googling about the subject, i already set the eth0 connection to share with other computers (in network manager edit connections auto eth0 ipv4 configuration set to share with other computers). Also using the cli set eth0 for static ip using :
Code:
sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.1 Now the question is what i am missing? or is everything needed already done and i just have to properly configure the win7 side (which i already checked several times)?
Here is my ifconfig output:
Code:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet Endereo de HW 00:01:29:a6:55:fe
inet end.: 10.42.43.1 Bcast:10.42.43.255 Masc:255.255.255.0
endereo inet6: fe80::201:29ff:fea6:55fe/64 Escopo:Link

Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 onto my new netbook from a USB stick. The laptop came with Win7 Starter, which I kept on a small partition. Installation was apparently successful, but when I start up the computer, it will go straight to Win7 and GRUB doesn't appear.

I had vista installed, then I installed Win7 on a dif. partition. Then I installed Ubuntu 11.4 over the vista partition (formatted first), and now I can't get into Win7. I'm really at a loss. I've tried the Win7 disk, and it doesn't detect the Win7 installation. I've also tried sudo update-grub, and it doesn't seem to detect the win7 install either. I've tried making the Win7 partition bootable using gpart as well. I'd like to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu, however I need to do that.

This is the first time I have run into issues mounting windows shares but I really can't figure this out. Can someone put me out of my windows misery please.
First off, last week I rebuilt my work PC fromWIN7 32bit to WIN7 64bit since then I can no longer mount the window share on my ubuntu server:
I recreated my windows share called "Linux" and used the properties, advanced sharing and added everyone, full access and my domain account full access.
If I browse to \ipaddress I can see my share and access it. From a XP machine I can see the share and access it.
From linux I use the same mount point as before, /linux I use the same fstab and it fails
Code:
I try this manually now:
Code:
Next I try to mount it:
Code:
I looked at my firewall rules and they seem ok.
Next test was connecting to my 2nd pc on windows XP no probs mounted first time.
What is wrong with my new Win 7 setup?

finding / mapping network shares on Win 7 guest in vmware. I am running 10.10 64 bit ubuntu and installed vmware workstation 7 (64 bit version). I created and installed win 7 (ultimate) vm. everything is good so far. The issue is I have a second desktop with ubuntu and I have shared 4 drives on that desktop. I want those shared available to the win 7 guest. And even after enabling the shared folders I do not see them.
Note: I have a shared folder on the same machine where I have vmware installed and win7 has assess to that drive.. its just that the shares on network are not available. Note2: i had virtualbox installed and it worked fine.

I try to understand the way the network-admin retrieve and set information about the network connections, and after reviewing thee code, I still dont undertsnad how it does it. I thought that it should use maybe linux commands such as iwconfig or ifconfig or by using ioctl for get/set the parameters of the wireless, but I did not find such things in the code. It also does not use AT commands for modem devices parameters.I see that it uses liboobs files, but after veiwing the code, I still don't understand how it works.
I thank you if you can give me some clue about it.These question comes since I need to make a program which connects to wireless devices (possibly several wifi and modems devices can be connected ), and I try to think how to set/get the network parameters, I thought that a good start will be to look at how network-admin works.

My current situations is this:
I got an W520 with an i7-2720QM and Nvidia Quadro 1000m. I want to virtualize with Debian as host and Windows as guest. Therefore i want to assign my Nvidia GPU to the guest.
The reason for this choice is because I'm an mechanical engineering student, and that requires alot of windows-only programs (CAD/FEM/matlab etc)..
I got stuck at Nvidias error 43 problem.
Current situation:
I know all my hardware supports VT-d and is activated.
I got the intel-iommu=on as a boot parameter in grub.cfg.
I have stubbed and blacklisted my Quadro gpu so the Win7 guest can acces and use it.
I got win7 installed and running, it detects and refuses the quadro card because its virtualized. I have tried used the 377.88 Driver and the newest, with and without kvm as hidden. I have deleted all hypervisor tags.. It still reports error 43 ..
This is my config file over my virtual windows machine:
Code: Select all<domain type='kvm'>
<name>win7</name>
<uuid>5ebc2f74-7bbd-482d-99f4-660155187f8d</uuid>
<memory unit='KiB'>6291456</memory>

I have two sata HDs. One of these has Debian an Winxp installed. Grub is the bootloader. Grub resides in MBR (on the same disk). Now that I've added that second disk, I would like to test win7 on it. What I would like to do is to be able to choose -at boot time (maybe in bios setup)- between booting from the disk containing win7 or from the disk containing Grub with winxp and Debian. I thought that when installing win7 it would let me choose the disk where to install it and here is where the problem arises.
Win7 installer detects my partitions and lists them as if they were not on different disks. What would happen if I choose to install win7 on the partition I want to (second disk, partition1)? Will win7 create a new bootloader? Now I am a little confused and don't want to keep on going not being sure the results are what I expected. What steps should I follow to install win7 on the second hard disc not affecting the disc with winxp, debian and grub letting me choose between these two Operating Systems?

VMWare, Wine and Cedega cant do what I need with how I run my laptop, which is equivalent to my portable laptop/workstation. Is there a partitioning tool in Debian that I can install to make a small partition for each? I also hace to set up GRUB instead of the Windows BL.

my problem is that the wired internet is working on and off, or not even that, only when it wants too. I have googled and googled, which by the way is not loading at all at the moment, and have not found anything. And i really don't know what's wrong. Some more details: 1) Finished installing suse 11.2 with gnome, yesterday. Internet, and google worked fine right off the bat. I have a laptop and so i suspended it to see if everything was working. 2) Bring back the laptop, no internet. I reboot, internet works (google included). 3) I leave the laptop alone, it goes to sleep mode (or what comes after screensaver).
I bring it back, no internet, i reboot, no internet. So i go to windows. 4) Came back to suse, now, and i have internet and google does not load! This is all with wired internet, i haven't had a chance to try the wireless (there isn't a signal for me to try). However, i am positive it won't work with the luck i've been having. Also, a few days ago i had suse with kde and the internet worked continously. I know it can't be related to the GUI, but it's peculiar.

My network is working and shows a connection to my wireless connection (connected at 100%), but firefox shows "Problem loading page" when ever I enter a url. So I can't access the internet. Synaptic doesn't work either. When I try to download, I get a warning "Could not doadload all repository indexes - (-5 No address associated with hostname)"This is a dual boot machine and the internet connection on the windows side works just fine. The connection worked fine with ubuntu 9.10. But since I partitioned the drive and did a fresh install of 10.4 I can not access the internet.
