Debian Hardware :: Need To Force Kernel Framebuffer To 640x480

Some weeks ago i hacked a old NCR all in one computer and installed modern hardware inside it, also installed and old VGA 13" B/W monitor inside (supports 800x600 max)
Then installed debian 7 i386 the installer runs fine, the problem is that after finishing the installation the monitor goes out of sync, the kernel load the i915 module and go out of sync.
So I have to connect another modern monitor and blacklist the i915 module, then get back to the internal VGA monitor.now the system boot fine to the linux console on text mode.
I plan to use this system from text mode (no x windows), the problem i found is that because i blacklisted the i915 module i don't have a /dev/fb0 so the console software i like to run like dosbox or scummvm canno't start because the framebuffer is missing.
What i need is to find a way to force the i915 module to a low resolution (640x480). This is what i tried.
vga=ask (or other options) this option is completele ignored by the kernel seem to by deprecated
passing grub options to the i915 module like video=VGA-1:1280x800 or modeset=1 also are ignored.
Theres some way to do this ?

I installed Debian Squeeze on a laptop today, with the official i386 DVD1. At the end, I was very disappointed to notice the installer automatically chose the amd64 kernel (with i386 packages ? how does that work ?). The hardware is compatible, but I'd really like to use the i386 kernel instead. Earlier, you could choose the kernel during installation ; I looked in Expert install with no luck. Where is it ?

Kernel parameter vga=0 or vga=normal does not work as expected - First it works as expected text mode resolution is 80x25, but after some seconds the kernel, or the initramdisk does switch resolution of console again! I hate to say but it looks like OpenSuSe (again) thinks it is more clever than the user.Since rmmod radeon in runlevel 3 says "ERROR: Module radeon is in use", I do think that somehow SuSe ignores my vga=0 ... Is it the kernel or the ramdisk, I do not know where to search, since the parameter vga=0 is accepted and used in the beginning - it switch again after "doing fast boot" or 1-2 lines later..

Just upgraded from Etch and now I'm stuck at 640x480 resolution. Xorg.conf doesn't show any display modes, and xrandr gives the only resolution as 640x480. The laptop is a Toshiba Tecra 730XCDT. I know its a doorstop, but 800x600 worked fine under Etch. Anyone know how to to change it back? It's really hard to look at right now.

I've finally managed to get the nvidia driver on my Lenny box. However I've now found that I can't change resolution from 640x480, the nvidia panel shows this and 320x240 as the only resolution. The layout shows "hidden as under 600 pixels" If I go to gnome screen resolutions it only shows 640x480. If I plug a second monitor in it won't detect it.
I'm using NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.51-pkg1.run, older versions appear not to work with Lenny crashing x on boot. How to change resolution on the nvidia in Lenny?

I'm installing a non-X server using squeeze 32bit netinst iso, expert installation. I don't know that I can specify "debian-installer/framebuffer=false" during the installation, after reboot I got a framebuffer display with console fonts smaller and fonts look like ubuntu. I search around I can edit GRUB config for the resolution items or disable framebuffer. How can I disable the framebuffer (use normal text system fonts) when booting in LILO?
I got everything installed and setuped, I don't want to re-install the OS again.

I have set the kernel selection time out to 3 seconds. However, sometimes it just hangs indefinitely on the kernel selection screen until I manually select the kernel. This is bad news since it is a VM started up from a script and _has_ to start automatically. The VM is a re-constructed cloud backup made by rsync and re-running grub.
Is there any way to force Ubuntu to NEVER, under any circumstances, not time out on kernel selection.

I have a loadable module, simple enough I believe it should run on any 2.6 kernel. I want to force the load and test that assumption. How can I do it?
ismod does not seem to notice the -f in 2.7 modprobe has -f but cannot locate the module.No go. So I read the manpage for modprobe which says: modprobe looks in the module directory /lib/modules/'uname -r'.So I copied MYMODULE.ko to /lib/modules/2.6.(the only directory in here) and type: modprobe -f MYMODULE.ko.Still can't locate MYMODULE.ko.I notice there are no other .ko modules in that directory; so I go in deeper to kernel/drivers/char, guessing about the char directory, and copy MYMODULE.ko there.

I just upgraded my storage server to maverick and it seems the 2.6.35-25 kernel doestn like the hardware im using
since im pretty sure its a hardware related problem and the previous kernel hastn the issue im currently booting this old kernel everytime i need the server by hand (using Shift during boot for the grub menu to appear)
well, it narrows down to the following question:
how can i exclude a specific grub entry - in my case the current kernel 2.6.35-25 - so only previous kernels OR future kernels from the next updates will have a chance to boot?

i'm using this guide videos - howto: debian linux kernel compilation, part 1 and the author says i need kernel 2.6.26 this version of kernel doesnt longer exist in kernel.org website and the only 2.6.26 i found is a patch here. should i use the patch? or download another version of kernel?

Firefox keeps trying to download docx files with my default text editor. Is there a way to get Firefox to just open everything using xdg-open?
There seems to be no way to get this browser to consistently open files with my chosen default applications. My mime-type settings are only obeyed sometimes. The pertinent file type isn't in the Application list of browser preferences, and there's no way to add it. The "Do this automatically..." option in the file download dialog is greyed out, so I have to go through my file system and choose the desired application every time I download a file of that type.

1)I need to install the Bigmem-kernel to detect the ram more than 4Gb,
2) or change some kernel parameters in configuration file and rebuild the kernel
Is there any another solution for this to update operating system to detect the more RAM

I decided I was going to compile XChat from source today for "fun." What I ended up doing was spending a few hours getting it to compile, then find out everything didn't work the way I thought it did. I was under the impression that after I ran "sudo make install" I was "upgrading", when in reality I'm just installing a seperate version alongside the old one. Apparently I have to keep the old version so every program that was compiled with it will continue to work, so how do I:
1) Force a program to use a specific version of GTK when compiling.
2) Find where my version of GTK installed to.
I've asked some people and I've just been told to "learn LD_PRELOAD". I've googled and can't figure how I could even apply that to my current problem

I am just too tired and am missing something in the man pages for aptitude and not getting my search terms right but I can't seem to find a way to make aptitude ignore a couple of supposed broken packages (they work just fine by the way). The only way I can find to remidy the situation is to remove those couple of packages or upgrade several things to their Squeeze counter parts. I really don't want to try and do the upgrade as at home I am stuck on a 56k connection. Removing the broken packages I guess won't be too bad if I can find the debs again after I install a couple of things I want to add to my system. I would however just like to make aptitude ignore the state of my system and try to install what I want anyway.

Is there a way to instruct mencoder to stop streaming/recording after a specified period associated with a loss of signal?I use mencoder to record over-the-air television recordings. Most of the time there are no problems.Occasionally a station's transmission signal disappears, caused by quirky atmospheric conditions, usually at night.Noticing these signal outages is easy by the mencoder error message:dvb_streaming_read, attempt N. %x failed with errno %y when reading %z bytes"Lengthy outages are unbearable because mencoder silently waits forever rather than quit.The significant problem with lengthy signal outages is mencoder continues recording for the time specified by the -endpos parameter. Thus, for example, if the recording is scheduled for 2 hours and there is a 20 minute loss of signal, the recording does not end until 2 hours and 20 minutes after starting.
Generally, when the interruption is lengthy the recording is ruined and I don't care to watch. I would like to programmatically tell mencoder to stop waiting and quit.Is there a way to do this? Say, after ten minutes of no signal, just terminate.I do not notice any parameters that might offer that option, but I could be overlooking something obvious. I have successfully installed Debian on a Sparc Ultra5, 270MHz SparcIIi CPU, 384MB RAM, 40GB HD. However, once Debian tries to load Gnome (right before the login screen) the screen goes blank, and so the machine becomes unusable. I booted of the NetInstall CD, into rescue mode, and executed a shell, but apparently there is currently a problem when running nano from a live CD, so I can not edit the xorg.conf file when I boot the live CD. So, I would like to just boot the install into single user mode, but I dont know how. Currently, when the Ultra5 is powered on, it tries to boot with command "boot", so I hit "Stop A". From there I type "boot Disk1" to boot Debian normally. To boot from a CD, I would type "boot cdrom" So any idea on how I can boot from Disk1 in Single User Mode?
My only other idea is to hook up another monitor I have which may be able to deal with whatever resolution Gnome is defaulting to. However, Id rather just boot into single user mode.

My monitor recent died and I'm using an old CRT as a replacement for now. I get an error when Ubuntu starts saying it could not find a framebuffer compatible device. It then gives me the option to boot into low res mode which I accept. Once I login, the display actually looks fine, but I would like to get rid of the error message.Anyone know how to remove framebuffer usage from the bootup process? A text display is fine. I looked in my xorg.conf, but I didn't find anything that I could tinker with.

I installed Centos5.2 and have created 1 instance so far. It all works great, but when I created the new instance (using command line from ssh and "virt-install") it gave a message saying probing for video, not found, assuming headless and on I went with the install.
But now I have need for a framebuffer because I have a JBOSS/Java Captcha routine which throws an error if it can't use the X11 libraries or some such (I've resolved this before on a headless Amazon instance once by just running "Xorg"). But I can't run Xorg on my DomU because it can't find the fb device!
So, I searched around and did a makedev -d /dev/fb to create it, but it still doesn't work, because, I assume, the hardware isn't found anywhere. So... how do I get Xorg to work in this case? Or do I need to re-do the virt install and somehow force it to find video hardware (but how?)

I have ad724 chip from analog devices that converts VGA signal to composite video, but it requires input in PAL standart. Is it possible to change framebuffer resolution and synchronisation to achive PAL on RGB output? I have try to change this using fbset but there is no change of resolution. Grub runs kernel with framebuffer of 640x480 resolution and i'm able to watch videos using mplayer on cli ubuntu version, but i have problems with setting it up to PAL.Why fbset does not affect to current display?
PS. I have Intel Atom CPU with intel integrated graphics (maybe problem is here?)

I've just installed Slackware 13.37 x64.Right now, everything is fine! All hardware OK, sound OK, Network/WiFi OK, nVIDIA Proprietary drivers OK, KDE Composite OK, Desktop effects OK.But when initializing, the messages pass very slow!My lilo framebuffer settings are 1024x768x64 (Code 791, 317 in Hex), my Graphics card is an nVIDIA GeForce 9100 M G (256Mb), but yet, I can see it refreshing like an image loading in 56Kbps connection.
I really would like to use framebuffer during boot (Oh, come on... The little penguin is kinda neat :-), so I'll ask... Is there a way to use my graphic driver in framebuffer, or make it faster?

Now, my issue is that I have no access to ethernet in my apartment so I need to rely on wifi for my install. But during the install when it is looking for the network hardware it never sees the TP-Link Dongle and never asks if I wan to load the firmware. I even tried it with the CD image that has the non-free drivers included but it never asks for the drivers. Any other distro, like Linux Mint 7.3, sees the dongle fine.
So is there a way to force load the realtek-firmware drivers during install?
