I am using Debian Squeeze, having installed it after Windows 7, each on a separate HD.
What happened was that Win7 became unbootable and, after failing to recover it, decided to live without it.
After a (happy) week of Windows-free life, I'm wondering if I can safely remove GRUB ("Grub-pc" and "Grub-common" are installed) since, as far as I know, GRUB is there only to boot/load more than one OS?
I had Fedora 7 and Windows Vista dual booting on my computer. I just installed Fedora 10. When the live CD asked me where to install it, I chose "Remove all Linux Partitions and create default layout" The installation went perfectly, but now when reboot my computer, it boots directly into Fedora; GRUB does not load to ask me which OS I want to load. I know I did not overwrite Vista because I can still view my Vista files through Fedora. Here is my grub.conf file:

PC: Dell Precision T7400.O/S: Windows XP SP3 64-bit & Scientific Linux 5.3 64-bit
The above PC has 2 HDDs installed one has XP and the other Scientific Linux.
Problem: XP needed to be re-installed, i've done this now but now the GRUB Boot loader doesnt load - So just boots straight into XP.
Qustion: Is there anywhere to fix the GRUB? Without wiping the 2nd HDD and re-installing Linux!

I'm relatively new to Linux and I am dual booting Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Windows XP and I would like to edit my GRUB menu to allow me to choose Windows XP which is on a 2nd hard drive. But, I can find no menu.lst and there is no GRUB menu while booting up, my computer boots right into Ubuntu. So, how do I enable the boot menu so that I can edit it and use it?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI messed it up with the grub in Ubuntu Netbook and the grub loader just prompt the "grub console" during the system boot.
However, I can boot manually by selecting manually the kernel:

But, of course, that is not really practical for an everyday use.
I tried with the update-grub command, but nothing happens, the grub.cfg is there, with all the kernels list, but the grub loader won't load it! It is just ignoring it!
If I load the config file manually it prompts the grub command line again (with the "welcome" message), so, it IS loading the grub.cfg, but it's not working!!!

On reboot the GRUB2 installer shows me the options for OS - I select Windows XP and then I get a blank screen with a flashing cursor - and nothing.. I CTRL ALT DEL and it reboots back to GRUB2 and I select UBUNTU and I log in. This is the first time I have tried to reboot Windows XP after fresh install of UBUNTU

Finally made the switch over to ubuntu, but I needed to keep my windows7 for several reasons. Let just start by saying I have two hard drives, a 200gig(which holds my windows7 partition) and a 500gig(has a 100gig partition which has ubuntu on it). After finally getting 10.04 to install on the 100gig partition and everything running right, I tried to load up windows7 and got an error.
Something along to lines of "the partition does not exist". I believe I messed up on the last step on the install, as I might of just been careless. I remember reading somewhere that if using multiple hard drives grub may get messed up in one way or another. IS there a way to fix this and make grub realize that window7 is on another partition, or am I out of luck?edit: Id like to add that grub is recognizing windows7, it just will not load off the other partition(I think)
I just added a 3rd hard drive, but now when I boot my computer grub doesn't load at all, it just boots to Windows. I've tried holding down Shift, and I've tried holding down ESC but it didn't work. I believe I have grub2.

Then I have only the Grub 0.97 shell that appears and to use to solve the problem... tried to boot kernel, but said that it "must be loaded before boot".
In the Grub 0.97 black window I have two lines :
I press "b", to boot with the First line : kernel (hd0,2)/boot/vmlinuz ... but the window turns blue and said "all data would be lost", so it shut down the system automatically to avoid this.
I press "e" to edit the command in the boot sequence for the same line, but don't really know what to tell Grub to do.
I must get my important datas back on my hd before "Restore to factory settings" (the last option). Any solution ?
Maybe it is a step on a solution ?

I tried doing a rescue installation, and reinstalled it many times with different settings. I even tried a manual partition according to instructions from the internet and reinstalling the grub boot-loader onto different partitions. I have reinstalled it at least 5 times!
I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on a separate partition, with Grub being in it own partition. When I start the PC only windows Xp is available. So how do I get grub or Ubuntu load with windows xp boot loader? I tried with Live cd, the sudo grub but then it says command not found. I think its because Ubuntu 11.04 uses grub 2.

First happened after the installation of VirtualBox OSE. Freezes right afterStarting GNOME Display Manager: gdm3and, in one instance, on the following line. Doesn't accept input and the cursor stops blinking on either state. VirtualBox's drivers are one of the closest lines to the last one and, in one instance, one of these lines reported an error. I can boot recovery mode and have already removed VirtualBox. Given it was installed with a live netinst CD image (on a USB stick) and I have a history of bad installations with this image, I'll try to install the normal CD image, although this will take some time.

I have been mucking around with Linux on and off for a while now, but this is the first time I have used a Debian distro. I have to say, it's been a pleasurable experience with it all going easily from install to now. I installed it to my external WD 1tb drive. It worked first up not a worry in the world. I have 2 internal drives also and when the installation of Debian was finished I had a GRUB with all operating systems duly noted. I was able to choose at start up between my Windoze 7 on HD0 and my PCLOS on HD1 and my Debian on HD2. (sda, sdb, sdc).
I noticed today as I was booting into Debian that the Windoze option was gone from the GRUB. I thought I'd put my trusty GRUB disc in, reboot and have the issue sorted in no time, as I have in the past. No such luck. After trying almost every option on the super grub disc I have a list of errors, 15 file not found, error 6 mismatched, error17 can not mount and error 12 invalid device. The only thing I can crank up now is windoze and whilst I have had a pretty good experience with win 7, I would like to have the option of choosing between the 3.
When I netinstall debian squeeze an asus netbook using using Unetbootin usb stick, at the end I am asked if I want to install grub on MBR. I agree, yes, but on booting I find that the netbook has not grub. I go back to usb stick that stole my grub and I use it to boot. I go to sunaptic and install grub, still nothing, the netbook won't boot without the usb stick.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have recently (today) installed Debian on a logical partition of my master hard disk, but when booting it will just list Debian or Debian recovery not listing windows at all. I know there may be some that will think that is a good thing but I do need access to windows.
I had a root about and found this thread which I thought might solve the problem as it is similar:

But when I got to the part where I entered the command su -c "nano /boot/grub/grub.cfg" the terminal prompt changed to a > and I felt a little unsure of what I was doing as I would have prefered to have opened the grub.cfg file as a text file, as it is I recieved a syntax error.
As you can probably tell Linux to me appears to be a bit of a black art, but I am enthusiastic none the less. I will list the output of the terminal window so that you may see the steps I have taken.

i have installed debian but during installation my installed windows 10 was not found by the grubloader. i have installed windows 10 on my ssd and the debian on my hdd. nevertheless i installed the grub loader on the master boot record, because it said i could still configure it so it can boot both the windows and the debian.The debian installation is running fine. But i now want to boot the windows too. The problem is i have never worked with the grub loader yet and i am little scared that i will do something wrong.How can i get grub to load my windows ?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have happily been booting debian through grub2 by chain loading it with efi (rEFIt), until today, and now get to begin another learning experience I've been using linux for a while, and kept seeing the guides for splitting up /, /var, /tmp, /usr, and /home, into different partitions, so I did just that when I switched from Ubuntu to Debian (I've realized that this was a little bit pointless because I formated them all as ext4, but at least it acts as a safety for mission critical drives when I overfill /home. I unfortunately didn't give /tmp enough space, and it kept crashing SimpleScan so I decided to use gparted to resize it.
The operation went alright as far as I can tell, and was straight forward because there was some free space behind it so I only had to append the partition. I synced the master boot record through rEFIt as usual, but when I booted the linux partition grub did load, and only a blank screen is presented. I eventually figured out I could use the gparted live cd to boot back into debian, and have been screwing around for a while with grub commands trying to figure out how to allow rEFIt to successfully boot GRUB on its own again. I ran grug-mkconfig to replace my /boot/grub/grub.cfg file and have rebooted but that did not help.
I tried reinstalling grub and grub-common with apt-get, but I didn't purge configuration settings for fear of losing something important. My current focus is on the command grub-install. I think i just need to run this command with the /boot device, like su - root; grub-install /dev/sda1 or some thing like that. wipe out the MBR on /dev/sda1, or screw up what good configuration is left in grub, so I want to make sure that I'm using the right /dev. Currently the gparted output looks like this:
/dev/sda1: fat32 - GPT (gpt from fdisk, gparted shows EFI with the boot flag)
/dev/sda2: hfs+ - MacOSx
/dev/sda3: ext4 - /root

how the gnome live gparted disk would have been able to boot. I have access to a hard drive so I'll probably end up making backup images of as many of the partitions as I can, and then try more drastic bashing around, but if anyone has any suggestions/wisdom they could offer while I'm researching solutions I'd appreciate it. I eventually want to try to axe my osx partition and boot directly from GRUB2-EFI so I figure it is worth the investment in time to get to know grub a little bit more intimately.

I'm trying to install Debian 6.01 on my PC. I have only 1 hdd and it has 3 partitions. On first there is windows 7 and on second ubuntu 10.10 and GRUB is installed to MBR and I can load both systems with no problems.As PC has no optical drive I was trying to install debian using USB stick but had no success. I was ready to give up when I've discovered that there is a W32 installer that I can run under Win 7. So I downloaded it and executed, it starts and download certain files and then it asks for reboot.
After reboot I can still chose between Win 7 and Ubuntu. If I chose win 7 I'm given a choice to run Windows or to continue setup for debian. Very well installer starts and I can chose all the classic stuff between languages etc. Then I come to a point where I need to choose partitions, ok as I have free 30 Gb partition i choose it for debian with settings:
Format in Ext4
Mount point: /
I already have a swap part that I can use. Done that I can start with selection of packages which goes fine and installs everything directly from debian mirrosrs. After that I choose GRUB to be installed into MBR and it goes fine. Some final steps and reboot.
After reboot GRUB offers me again Ubuntu or Win 7. So I can boot either Ubuntu or win 7 which gives me the same choice from before, Windoes or continue Debian setup. I tried doing the setup again with some repair options that it offers but still nothing happens.
I have just updated my Ubuntu linux to Ubuntu 10.4, not my grub menu isnt letting me boot to Windows Partition.The problem seems to be with grubs new update from using an editable menu.lst file to using a non editable grub.cfg file. Everywhere I look it states "DO NOT EDIT THE GRUB.CGF FILE". I am at a loss as what to do. I figured that the new configuration has screwed up the Windows Boot File. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this. I am not sure if it is a windows issue or an issue with the Grub boot menu.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi'm trying to install 98se to a 110gb partition so i can dual boot with ubuntu 10 for 98 and 100 for ubuntu after the resize. when i tried making multiple partitions manually for ubutnu putting it on separate partitions i got grub boot errors. the problem i am having every time i try to install 98 it forces me to scandisk it then i have to hit space bar to fix every error i thinks it finds wich is impossible to press it 2 million times. now if I format in a non 98 format and tell it to format in lba it keeps asking for a boot disc, i burned one off but, still kept asking for it. if i do it in non lba, it only saw 2 gigs in 98 and when i went to install ubuntu it was a giant hard drive no partitions. i did try making 3 fat 32s 1 for 98 and then swap and linux partition but, the i got grub errors 17 and 18.
the problem is that bios a cap of 130gb for each drive or in this case partition. it's 320gb WD blue Scorpio. the short i want to dual boot 98se and ubuntu 9.04 with 2 fat32 partitions for storage 110 +100 + 80 = 320 also some visuals.
I'm not consistently able to boot into Ubuntu Lucid on my new dual boot (w/ Win7) setup. Machine is a Dell XPS 1645 laptop. Usually it takes 1-3 tries of hard shut down and restart before the OS starts up. Boot info script results are below. Windows starts up fine everytime. What I usually get is this: Dell startup screen, then Grub2 menu, then after selecting Linux kernal a blinking cursor at upper left of monitor and it just hangs.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI tried to update to 2.6.31-20 kernel but I think I messed it up, because when I click on it in the GRUB it starts to load but then it goes back to the dell boot up screen and I have to use the older one in order to get onto ubuntu. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop with Windows 7, and about a week ago I installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit via LiLi USB creator. Worked beautifully, but I was having some issues with the brightness controls so I decided to get cute and upgrade to 11.04. So I downloaded the beta2 and used LiLi to make the USB (unsupported for that version of course) which used the same parameters as 10.10. I then tried to do a fresh install over the partition I had set aside for Ubuntu and had 10.10 installed on (~80 GB).
So in the installation itself, something got majorly screwed, and the entire system froze. Next thing I knew, I was rebooting and got the Grub Rescue prompt and no ability to load into either my old Ubuntu 10.10 or my new failed 11.04, or of course my Windows 7 partition either. The partition is obviously there, and as I only have one PC in my house, with no Windows 7 recovery discs, I currently cannot fix the mbr to just get my Windows back. I can of course get this in a couple days, but I'd like to be able to fix this without going to my parents.

Those are my partitions. /dev/sda3 is my Windows Partition, which I want to boot from. Only problem is, I'm not really sure where the computer is looking to find the boot record. I think it's from my fubarred /dev/sda4 partition which means it's basically looking nowhere. So I can't modify it to point to my Windows so I can just get back there.
Recently I installed Debuan "jessie". I previously had Windows 8.1 and Xubuntu installed. After installation Debian installed it's own version of GRUB, with entries for Debian, Xubuntu and Windows. The problem is that after I selected Windows when booting, GRUB menu no longer appears. It boots straight into Windows.
It's lenovo Ideapad z510 laptop, with special button that allows me to select between 4 options before booting - one of them is "Boot menu".
I didn't use it before windows "removed" GRUB, but now there are 2 options: Windows boot loader and Ubuntu. When I select Ubuntu it loads my old boot menu (from before installing Debian).
I thought that when I use update-grub from Xubuntu I will at least eb able to boot into debian. After I did that Debian option appeared in the GRUB menu, but it didn't work - black screen.
How to get GRUB menu working again (and avoid replacing it by windows boot loader)?
I recently did a single boot install of Lenny-xfce on a Compaq Armada laptop. There were no errors and grub indeed found that Lenny was the only OS on the hard drive and installed itself on the MBR. My problem is that I'm getting an error 18 when booting the freshly installed system from hard disk. I booted into rescue mode and started a shell to take a look around. There are files on the drive and /etc/grub exists. device.map shows dev(0,0) as being mapped to /dev/hda. A search on the forum for "grub error 18" came up with nothing.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed another Linux distro, Kali Linux, alongside my Debian 8 and discovered to my chagrin that my computer boots to Kali's grub rather than to the Debian grub. I had spent some time customizing Debian's grub and would hate to see that effort go to waste. Is there a way I can get my computer to boot to Debian's grub instead? I tried deleting Kali's boot partition with gparted but that did not seem to do anything.
