Whenever I try to open my home folder in GNOME, I get the following error as seen in the attachment. How can I fix this? I do have nautilus installed, so what could be the problem??
View 10 RepliesI installed ubuntu maverick a couple days ago, total newbie. After trying to install some software I no longer can access any of the Places folder and get an error - file not found.
I can open Computer, partitions and devices, just not the first 7 folders which i think are bookmarks.

Ok, I eventually solved it. Appears I had inadvertently selected another program as default folder openenr. Just opening any folder with right click - open with - folder openenr reassigned nautilus and opens Places folders ok.
why fedora 14 will not open my home folder. it will say opening across the task bar but will not open. none of my folders seem to want to open. . updates are done, and it says software is up to date.

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy laptop running on ubuntu has been having some issues and it's giving error reports on logging in. Because I want to retrieve my files above all else, I installed ubuntu to a usb-stick and booted it directly from there. I can asses /media/myharddrive/home and there's a folder called lennard, which is the user account on my laptop. I can't open it however, because I don't have the necessary permissions. I'm afraid I encrypted it with an option that was standard to ubuntu. I have a 23-digit code right in front of me but I'm not asked to enter it so I don't know what to do with it right now.

With "Ubuntu Classic", I can open up my Home folder multiple times and thus copy files from one location to another with drag and drop. In Unity, it seems I can only open up one occurrence of the Home folder. Does anyone know if multiple Home folders can be opened up?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI got 11.04 installed on my laptop a few weeks ago and all seemed well. I've only used this machine for general surfing and downloads (legal of course )Anyway, last night it started to display some odd or should I say, show stopping issues.
Issue 1. Clicking the Home Folder button at the top of the left launcher does nothing. Well when I say nothing is does dim the icon, the hard drive turns but no folder opens. OS function 101 failure.
Issue 2. Inserting a USB stick (that just last week we working fine) does nothing. Again, when I say nothing, the harddrive light goes on, but the USB drive does not open.
Issue 3. Unable to get my home folder open in the Ubuntu 11.04 Unity system I downloaded Sunflower, a file browser app. It runs fine from the command line, but when the I decided to make a shortcut to this on the desktop, I right clicked on the desktop in order to use the Create Launcher option. But guess what? The right click does not reveal any menu. Right clicking on the desktop does nothing.
This is not good enough for what is suppose to be a mature stable OS!I really do not want to go to Fedora 15 or <shudder> Windows 7 so, how do I fix this broken system? Is there some system repair that reinstalls the OS or something? Is there a system repair that does not require me getting all the updates again?
I was trying to view a dvd on ubuntu (which works on windows) so I downloaded a few progams from the synapatic manager and software center - nothing made the dvd work but now when I go to "places" and "home folder" movie player opens and has a error message window that is at least 10 deep that says "could not open location; you might not have permission to open file." I can't get to home folder at all!Did I totally ruin Ubuntu? Is this fixable? I rebooted and that didn't help

Since i like Debian now a lot (in past days it was a very hard system to handle, but there has been some progress i noticed), i have to change some things (want Debian as main system now) For Ubuntu i have: (was meant to be main system on Notebook) "/", "/home" and a "swap" partition, but since i am now going to use mainly Debian, i wanted to store my files all in the "/home"-folder of my extended Ubuntu partition (has much more space available) not in the "/home" folder of the Debian system. So i want both (Debian and Ubuntu) to use the same extended partition ("/home") which i created for Ubuntu to save their files like downloads, videos, and so on.

I have a wired problem on my Fedora 12 x64, up-to-date machine. Sometimes (not always), when i try to open my Home-folder Nautilus starts but doesn't show the content. The Sub-dirs like Documents and Downloads work without a problem.
To isolate the problem i tried to "ls -la" my home folder but ls hangs. When i only "ls -l" (without the a) it works. When i "ls -la" my home as root it works. My guess is, that there is a problem with the .gvfs-folder.
I want encrypt my home folder by using the DES? How to do it?

When I first installed ubuntu, I changed my home folder to my OS X home directory to synchronize all my files from both. My home directory is now /media/sda2/Users/username/. In a regular home folder, the icons for Documents, Music, Pictures, Movies, etc. are different (not just with emblems, but actually different icons). But when I changed my home folder, these subfolders' icons stayed the same as regular folder icons and I can't figure out a way to change that default setting. I know how to change the icons for each folder manually, but these changes don't appear everywhere (i.e. nautilus, places, etc). Furthermore, every time I change my icon theme, I would have to manually reassign icons for these folders. Is there a way to globally change the folder icons for these folders?

I'd like to be able to accomplish the same in gnome with the nautilus file browser but can't figure out how to do same. So far I have to open a terminal and then cd to the desired folder. Or do I have to use some other file browser and which one?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 updated to 9.10 and have downloaded Remaster from Remastersys. I followed all of the instructions, which were simple enough. However, there must be some instructions missing as the process failed. Working with Remaster through Synaptic Manager, the iso was downloaded into my "home" folder into its own Remaster folder. It was not the iso, like you get when downloading a distro from the Internet, which downloads just an iso onto the Desktop. Inside the folder were a bunch of empty files (I know, because I opened them) and an iso . At this point the Remaster instruction stop. They do not say what to do with the other files, or what they have to do with the iso of my Ubuntu layout. So, like any other iso (once I knew which one was the iso of my setup), I double clicked on it and it ran me through the process of accessing the DVD to burn it. Which I did. I tested it and it failed with some kind of message to the effect that certain files were missing or it could not read it. So, I thought, I would have to do the 'hunt and peck' method and experiment a few times like I did with the ordinary distro downloads until I get it right. But first, I would have to dump the Remaster folder in the "home" folder since it took up so much space on my hard drive. Wrong! I come to find out it is in something called "root" and that I do not have permission to do anything with it but "copy" it. Great. Just great! Now what do I do. I tried to change permissions, but was not allowed to do that either. The only thing I could think of - and dread - was the idea of having to wipe my hard drive and go through the whole reinstall procedures, which takes me days, just because Remaster has locked itself into my system - and there is no 'back door' to get out of it.

I remember on my last session i got some icons on my home folder with a little lock icon on them i tried to remove them successfully using the command line but i still can't login. however i can successfully login with another user.
Wondering if its possible to have a User's home folder that resides in a different partition (could be ntfs or ext). I don't mean mounting /home on a different partition. The home directory will still be available for adding more users but I'd like to have a specific User's folder away from /home

I updated my Jessie system today. Nothing crucial in the apt-get list as far as I can see, perhaps it's unrelated. Anyway, now I cannot open the terminal any longer. Launching `gnome-terminal` shows the app name in the menu bar, a spinning wheel, and then after a few seconds nothing. It doesn't appear in the list of processes, either. I can still log into the text shell via ctrl-alt-F1.
I also added `LC_TIME="en_GB.UTF-8"` to `/etc/environment` to get rid of the American date format. Could it be the cause? I just tried to launch the terminal from the JVM. I get this output:

I'm not positive if this is in the correct section but I am hoping so. I am running dual-boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. I hunted down my files from Windows that I need for school (old papers, research, etc.) and found it under "file system" --> "host" --> "users" --> "zbollman". I can access all of my files and I'm happy now that I don't have to boot between the two constantly to get what I need. However, I tried to copy the file to my home folder, but it said I do not have enough room. I'm about 5GB short. How do I go about allocating more space so that I can copy this folder so that all of my information is easily accessible?
View 5 Replies View RelatedMost of my gnome system administration tools are (suddenly) failing to open. The system is a new installation with both KDE and gnome, and the gnome system admin tools were working fine, but now they fail silently (nothing even in .xsession-errors). For instance, if I select Synaptic Package manager from the menu, I will get the gksu prompt to enter my administrative password, which I do. Then a notification will appear in the Taskbar "Granting Rights" and then after that nothing happens, it just fails silently. Note that this also happens if I enter 'gksu synaptic' or 'gksu /usr/sbin/synaptic' at the alt-F2 command line. Note that it doesn't seem to matter whether I check "Save Password for Session" or not. The same happens for time-admin, users-admin, etc. I have tried reinstalling gnome-system-tools, system-tools-backends, and gnome-keyring with no effect. I have googled extensively and have found a few other people with this same problem, but no solutions. Note also that kdesu does still work fine, and there doesn't seem to be any such problems in KDE in general. Only in gnome and with gksu.
P.S. Let me know if you need any more info (output from commands, files, etc).
