Ubuntu :: Data Transfer Rates Over Usb/lan Slow?

Jul 18, 2010

I am running ubuntu 10.4 lts desktop and ubuntu 9.10 server with the gui active. On both of these machines the data transfer rates over usb and lan have slowed down quite considerably. Also over multiple devices, not the same hardware everytime I try to transfer something.

Ubuntu :: USB Disk - Slow Transfer Speeds And Slow System?

Apr 17, 2011

Whenever I transfer a movie into my 16GB USB flash disk, my whole system becomes windows-like and unusable!

When i drag the file(s) into the USB disk folder, it starts out fine and pretty darn fast (25mb/sec) then slowly decreases until it's unbearably slow (3m/sec) and as a side effect my whole system starts deteriorating. I basically have to wait for the file to finish transferring before i can use my desktop again!

This has been happening with every version since Karmic (all 64bit)- I put up with it because I don't use the USB stick that much.. but lately it's been my go to source for transfering large files to/from work.

Ubuntu :: Very Slow File Transfer

Feb 14, 2010

i have a bit of a problem and it seems i am not alone, google gave me a lot of hits but no solution.i'm running a dual-boot system on my laptop.

ubuntu 9.10 is installed on ext3
windows xp sp3 on ntfs
files are on another ntfs partition

if i want to copy a file (or folder) bigger than 250mb my laptop literally gives up until the file transfer is complete. opening up a terminal via keyboard shortcut gives my an idea how long a ice age can last.this happens with ext3 to ext3; ext3 to fat32; ext3 to ntfs and ntfs to ntfs.today i wanted to backup some files (12GB ~4k files) the first 4gb ran with 20MB/s (all open applications grayed out). after 2h i came back to see that only 6GB where done.

Ubuntu Servers :: Slow File Transfer

Jan 27, 2010

I have 8.04.3 server-32bit. It is on an HP 2.3ghz Pent 4 with 512 mb of RAM.I had previously installed Ubuntu and Kubuntu in a dual boot with XP (actually had a triple boot with XP, Ubuntu, and a BETA Windows 7) for a while, Grub got messed up so I ended up wiping it and just put my XP back on it. I have been intimidated by the command line and when thinking server, I tried the 30 day deal with windows Home server, its OK but it's $100.00 for the permenant version.

Anyway, I manned up to the challenge, installed Ubuntu server, set up as SSH and Samba. I administer from PuTTy and WEBMIN, I tried TightVNC but the GUI seemed very useless, so on a reinstall I went headless. The problem is I have alot of MP3 files I want to transfer back to the server that I had previously transfer to and back again from the Windows server, it was sceamin' fast compared to this. I have found threads talking about using NTFS, I have the EX3, or whatever the Ubuntu format is. Could that cause slow transfers, from NTSF through Samba to Ubuntu?

Ubuntu :: Ridiculously Slow File Transfer

Ubuntu :: Slow Transfer Speeds Via HDD To HDD (10.10) / Make It Up?

Now no matter how i transfer if its from HDD to HDD or to SSD i never get more then 18-20MB/sec, i just tried booting to my live CD and was able to transfer with 24-25MB/sec

This is really slow, since the worst (2.0TB) can do a minimum of 30 READ

Anybody got any ideas, this seems to be something that has plagued ubuntu for years, and no i don't want to try other distros, i tried almost all of them a year ago and finally went with ubuntu

Hardware :: Very Slow USB Transfer Speeds / Ubuntu Only

Dec 27, 2010

I'm at the end of my rope here. And the most frustrating part is, I've found many posts all over the web from others who have had similar problems, but they ALL seem to be older distros and those solutions don't work for me. "Find Similar Threads" only yields one thread, and I don't have the file mentioned in the answer (the original poster didn't either).

Computer: AMD 64 Quad core, USB 2.0 on front bus, dual booting Vista and Ubuntu 10.10
Device: New Sansa Clip+ 8GB mp3 player

Problem: When I transfer files to my mp3 player in Ubuntu, I max out at about 150 KiBbps. It's painfully slow - it takes me half an hour to transfer 300 MB worth of albums. I had similar problems with an older player that may have been usb 1.1, but this one is brand new. And when I switched to Vista (first time in months, thankfully), I was able to transfer the same files at upwards of 3 MBps. I know that flash devices often can't write anywhere near the max speed of USB 2.0, but obviously it can do a whole lot better then 150 KiBps!So, same hardware, same files, different OS - the problem must be with my Ubuntu config.

Ubuntu Networking :: Transfer Of Data From PC To Mac ?

Jul 26, 2011

Recently I had a situation where I had to transfer data from a PC to a Mac. Usually we simply convert the data as necessary, ie. bookmarks, contacts, etc. move the info to a dropbox account and use Windows networking to access the dropbox from a Mac. Well, there was a network issue and it was suggested that I boot to Ubuntu and do this. We do have Ubuntu on a flash drive but I was lost from there. Can anyone point me in the direction of documentation or assist me in understanding how this would be accomplished? I have a Mac, PC and Linux box at home so hopefully I have all the necessary tools to test this out.

Ubuntu :: Slow File Transfer: NTFS To Ext4

Jul 4, 2011

I am trying to move over 1 Terrabyte of files from a two terrabyte drive into my Ext4 drive where Ubuntu 11.04 is installed. The two terrabyte drive is where my winxp used to be and it's currently paritioned into three partitions. I would like to reformat into a single partition that's why I'm moving the files.

When moving the files from the 2Terrabye NTFS partition into the Ext4 partitioned drive, the best transfer rate I could get is 11 megabytes per second. When I transfer from one NTFS drive to another NTFS drive, I could get as high as 70megabytes per second in WinXP. Is there a way to speed up the speed transfer?

Otherwise, the file transfer dialogue says it would take 26 hours to move all the files!!!

Edit: both drives are internal drives connected via a sata II.

Ubuntu :: Slow Transfer Off Main Hard Drive

Dec 25, 2009

I have a 500 gig external usb, and a few 8 gig flash drives. If i copy a file (say a movie or large file) from my primary hard drive (80 gig WD formatted to ext3) to a usb drive it transfers very slowly, about 2 mb/s. But if I copy a file off my secondary internal drive (40 gig seagate formatted to ntfs) it transfers full speed (25-30 mb/s) Its also very slow transfering between internal hard drives (again, no more than 5 mb/s) I checked and as far as i can tell both drives are running in DMA mode. Any reason my primary seems to be causing this bottleneck? it seems to preform fine otherwise (as it is the drive with my ubuntu installation on it)

Hardware :: Slow USB Thumb Drive Transfer Ubuntu 10.04

Jun 24, 2010

Has anyone else had an issue transferring large files to external usb drives ? What seems to be happening is it will float right along until it gets to the last couple of megs and then just sit there for a few minutes. The larger the file the longer it sits there. I am having the problem with both an external 1 gig usb HDD and two separate thumb drives. All of which have been verified as functional and fast under other systems. All of the drives are formatted in NTFS for portability in the field. I also do not believe this to be a hardware issue as it does it on my daily driver as well as my laptop.

This is the kernel I am running

Linux 2.6.32-22-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 3 19:31:57 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

All the drives were automounted.

This leads me to the conclusion that the problem lies with MC.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: MTP Devices Data Transfer Fix

Aug 1, 2010

For the past few days, i have been trying to fix a common error related to mtp devices such as creative zen. Because of the new updated libmtp8 library, it is impossible to transfer files into any mtp devices. However there is a fix that will remove this issue.

1. Get the older karmic version of libmtp8 from here: URL...
2. Install this package from terminal using: sudo dpkg -i libmtp8*.deb
3. Lock libmtp8 from the synaptic package manager, so it doesn't get updated.
4. Uninstall and then downgrade any mtp packages (through packages.ubuntu.com) that become broken after step 2 to the karmic version.
5. Enjoy.
