Debian :: Disable Any Kind Of Stanby-mode Under Gnome?

Apr 25, 2011

I have squeeze with Gnome installed. My problem is the monitor goes into "black" and I'd like to disable any kind of of stanby-mode. If I search for screensaver using Synaptic, I have these packages installed:

xdg-utils
gnome-settings-daemon

but in gnome menu cannot find any screensaver options. Power Manager I've disabled already in the "Startup Programs". Howto disable all screensaver and power-save options from the command line?

Debian Multimedia :: Gnome 3 Defaults To Fallback Mode

Feb 11, 2015

I recently installed Wheezy from a DVD (that was written almost a year and half ago) to my desktop. The DVD install was a minimal one, so after installation I updated the system and installed gnome. But after reboot, my gnome always falls back to gnome-classic.

Code: Select all$ gnome-shell --version
GNOME Shell 3.4.2
$ cat /etc/issue
Debian GNU/Linux 7
l

May be some firmware is missing, so I installed firmware-linux, firmware-linux-free, firmware-linux-nonfree, firmware-realtek, firmware-atheros (last two following a boot time warning). That did not solve the problem, so I just did Code: Select all$ sudo apt-get install firmware-* That also did not solve the problem.

Then I looked into my .xsession-errors file:

Code: Select all/etc/gdm3/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
localuser:somesh being added to access control list
openConnection: connect: No such file or directory
cannot connect to brltty at :0
gnome-session-is-accelerated: No hardware 3D support.

[code]...

I also installed "libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental" from another post I found in this forum. But gnome still falls back to gnome-classic.My hardware is: Core i5-4440, Intel onboard graphics, realtek audio and network.

Debian Multimedia :: Disable Gnome But Start Window Manager

Aug 16, 2011

In the murky world of X11, window managers, session managers and desktop environments I cannot seem to figure out how to achieve the following in Squeeze:

1. Leave Gnome installed, but prevent it from launching when typing startx
2. Have both X11 and my prefered default window manager (blackbox) startup when I type startx (or similar)

My ultimate goal is to leave Gnome installed but "dormant" and when I do a remote ssh -X be able to use X11 forwarding with blackbox.

Debian Multimedia :: Gnome-tweak-tool Not Working In Non-classic Mode

Apr 5, 2015

I'm using gnome shell 3.4.2.1 from the stable debian repository. 2 problems with the gnome-tweak-tool:

1) The extensions list is empty, even when the gnome-shell-extensions package is installed

2) in the non-classic mode only, setting made in the tool have no effect: e.g. Shell->Show date in clock does not toggle the date in the clock.

Debian Configuration :: Enable/disable "11-minutes-mode" Kernel->RTC Update?

Aug 10, 2010

I have some issues concerning so called "11-minutes-mode" - RTC update"11-minutes-mode" definition In hwclock man page we can read:"Automatic Hardware Clock Synchronization By the KernelYou should be aware of another way that the Hardware Clock is kept synchronized in some systems. The Linux kernel has a mode wherein it copies the System Time to the Hardware Clock every 11 minutes. This is a good mode to use when you are using something sophisticated like ntp to keep your System Time synchronized. (ntp is a way to keep your System Time synchronized either to a time server somewhere on the network or to a radio clock hooked up to your system. See RFC 1305).

This mode (we'll call it "11 minute mode") is off until something turns it on. The ntp daemon xntpd is one thing that turns it on. You can turn it off by running anything, including hwclock --hctosys, that sets the System Time the old fashioned way. To see if it is on or off, use the command adjtimex --print and look at the value of "status". If the "64" bit of this number (expressed in binary) equal to 0, 11 minute mode is on. Otherwise, it is off. If your system runs with 11 minute mode on, don't use hwclock --adjust or hwclock --hctosys. You'll just make a mess. It is acceptable to use a hwclock --hctosys at startup time to get a reasonable System Time until your system is able to set the System Time from the external source and start 11 minute mode. Here are my questions:1 . How to check if "11-minutes-mode" is on/off ?The output of adjtimex -p looks like this:

mode: 0
offset: 17504
frequency: 6140386

[code]...

Server :: Disable Console Blanking In Text Mode?

Jan 6, 2010

I run a custom build of linux running kernel 2.6.24 and busybox. At the moment I'm investigating a kernel panic. The problem is that after 10 minutes the screen is blanked, i.e. it is still on but has been turned black. If you press a key then the command prompt is shown once again, but if the kernel has crashed then this won't work and any info about the panic is inaccessible. So I'd like to prevent the display being blanked. I've tried booting with 'apm=off' and 'apm=off acpi=on' kernel parameters but neither had any effect.

Debian :: "Not Optimum Mode - Recommended Mode 1280 X 1024 60Hz"

Apr 19, 2010

I am getting a pop up window saying: "Not optimum mode. Recommended mode 1280 x 1024 60Hz" In my case, this is happening after installing Debian 504 AMD64, the Samsung "SyncMaster 940N" that gives this message or warning was working fine for a few years on another machine under the previous Lenny distro.

The only way to get rid of this unwanted pop-up window (the monitor is working fine) is to press the "AUTO" switch on the monitor, there is no such option in the menu of the monitor to disable anything or change the resolution and it seems to me that, unlike what was suggested as an answer in similar threads, the problem is not with the monitor but with the distro unable to detect the monitor properly. The only mention in the "xorg.conf" file is as follows and running "dpkg reconfigure ..." has no other effect than creating a new exact duplicate of the file.

Section "Screen"
Identifier"Default Screen"
Monitor"Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Fedora :: Disable Knotify / Kdewallet In GNOME?

1) When I login to my computer, kopete starts up, and kde wallet asks fro my password for the wallet, in order for kopete to login to my accounts. This is very annoying. I find it inefficient to have to enter my password twice when turning on my computer.

2) Everytime a buddy signs on/off, a notification (or sometimes numerous notifications) run down the center of my screen and cover all my active windows.I want to disable knotify and kdewallet to alleviate these problems.

Ubuntu :: Disable Gnome Monitor Names?

Jan 2, 2010

I'm running 9.10 on my laptop hooked up to an external monitor via HDMI. However gnome places the name of each screen in the upper left corner of each screen so that my laptop has a "laptop 13" icon and my external has an "ACI 22"" icon blocking gnome's Applications Menu. Is there anyway to disable these icons?

They are detailed here: [URL] "GNOME 2.24 has upgraded its screen resolution controls to make this possible. Utilising the new XRandR 1.2 specification from X.Org, this dialogue enables users to easily set up individual monitors in a number of configurations. Monitors are named and the names appear in the top left corner of the screen for easy identification."

It wasn't working at all at one point and I am assuming that some update or another got it going. Perhaps a repo switch. Unfortunately I am not sure of what those changes may be. I just know that it does run now but only in fallback.
