Debian :: Difference Between Regular Lenny And 'update' ISO?

Jun 6, 2010

I was looking through the Debian FTP site, and noticed
debian-504-amd64-DVD-1.iso

and with a modification time only about 24 hours later,
debian-update-5.0.4-amd64-DVD-1.iso

Whats the difference between these two?

Debian Configuration :: Unable To Use RAID On Lenny To Squeeze Update

Mar 29, 2010

Have my proxy running on Lenny and tried to upgrade to squeeze. Originally the system was installed on Etch and upgrading to Lenny was no problem. In the system i have two RAID1 volumes, md0 for / and md1 for /home. For upgrading i added the sources to my apt.conf and startet dist-upgrade. During the installation procedure, when installing udev I was advised to install the new kernel first and continue upgrade after booting the kernel. so I installed the kernel by "apt-get install linux-image-2.6-686. When generating initramfs there was a message, that there are no arrays defined in /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf I took a look and there were none. mdadm seems to have been update before.

I then added the lines for RAID definition and added the data for UUID The UUID I got from the output of "mdadm --detail /dev/md0"
What I don't understand: blkid gives the same UUIDs for the first partitions of the RAID and a different UUID for /dev/md0 and /dev/md1 than mdadm --detail The update of initramfs for kernel 2.6.32 then gives this result:

update-initramfs -u -k 2.6.32-3-686
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-3-686
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/e100/d102e_ucode.bin for module e100
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/e100/d101s_ucode.bin for module e100

What happens if I update Debian Squeeze from Lenny's source.list?A step by step manual is written on Lenny, and if I change lenny to squeeze things seem to not work. When I update the squeeze from the original source.list and then change to the source.list that manual uses things are working. But if I were to start squeeze with lenny's source.list I am getting error while trying to do this:

apt-get install wget mc zip unzip bzip2 ntp ntpdate lsb-release.

General :: Difference Between Regular User And System User (and Groups)

Sep 28, 2010

What is the difference between creating a "regular" user and creating a "system" user on Linux?

For example:

Code:

adduser john

Code:

adduser --system john

Similarly it seems there are normal groups and system groups. Doing an internet search and reading man pages does not give much information on the whole concept of system and regular user/group.

General :: Debian Lenny : How To Install Xfce 4.6 Instead Of Lenny's 4.4

Dec 14, 2009

i was trying to use gnome and kde but i don't like them. I tried xfce and it seem to fit my needs but.My computer is used to be powered on for a weeks. While time passes, a process xfdesktop begin to use more and more memory and to free RAM i need to log out and log in again.

I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.

i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).

Ubuntu Installation :: Regular Update Now Can't Boot From HD Or CD?

Oct 7, 2010

I updated my Ubuntu 10.04 on Dell 1330 and on the next boot it failed. I get a series of messages, the main point seems to be that it can't find the files it needs to mount.I tried booting from the live cd I used to install 10.04, but it can't boot either due to wrong user id error and maybe trying to boot from wrong kernel? At this point I am willing to just wipe the hard drive and do a fresh install but how to do that if I can't run the install cd?Or is there a way from initramfs to solve this?I tried mount /dev/sda1/mnt but it says cannot read /etc/fstab no such file.libdevmapper

Ubuntu Installation :: Regular Update On 9.10 Breaks USB Printer?

Feb 10, 2010

I did an update during a time when power was cycling due do a nasty snow storm, but I'm pretty sure the update was completed successfully before I lost power. What did happen though is that my BIOS setup was reset.

Now if my HP Laserjet 1020 is plugged into USB during boot all other USB devices freeze for a while. So I played with my BIOS setting for USB:

- Enabled V1.1 and V2.0
- Disabled System USB Shadowing

So now my bootup doesn't hang. But now when I actually go into Karmic I still can't print.

dmesg shows the following:

[ 205.940008] usb 1-10: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 9
[ 219.510026] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 10

CentOS 5 :: Xen Not Starting - After Doing A Regular Software Update On A 5.5 Box - And Rebooting

Jun 21, 2010

After doing a regular software update on a 5.5 box (and rebooting), I now have problems starting xen (version "xen-3.0.3-105.el5_5.3.x86_64").

Running "/etc/init.d/xend start" yields no output, and checking the script, I see that the script halts if "/proc/xen" doesn't exist.

Checking the filesystem, I find that the "/proc/xen" entry is indeed gone. Restarting the CentOS box does not help.

Should I reinstall Xen? If so, should I remove any portions of Xen before I do?

Update:

When I run /usr/sbin/xend I get:

Fedora :: Knetwork Manager With The Update - Stable And Robust Enough For Regular Use?

Nov 18, 2009

I'm running Fedora 11, and just did an update of the system. It looks like there was an update to the package that takes care of knetwork manager. In the past, I have played around with it, but it hasn't met my needs, so I went back to nm-applet, which works fine.

I'm curious about the update, and would like to see if it works. However, knetwork manager won't start as there is another network manager already running (there is a message about this everytime I log in). I can easily kill nm-applet, but logging out and back in causes it to reload, and I still get the message from knetwork manager. So here are my questions:

1) With the update, is knetwork manager stable and robust enough for regular use (the docs for F11 said it wasn't upon F11 release, so included gnome's network manager as the default network manager)?
2) How do I get knetwork manager to work (I presume this means I turn off Gnome's network management and switch to knetwork management)?

Ubuntu :: Wireless Stopped Connecting - Applying Regular Updates Via Update Manager

May 9, 2011

My self-built PC had a BT wireless adaptor in it which worked, albeit after a bit of a faff, with Ubuntu 10.10 in connecting to my BT HomeHub2.

When I came to use it last week it would not connect. I'd not changed any hardware but I had been applying regular updates via Update Manager.

Bearing in mind the "faff" factor, I decided to try a different (Edimax) wireless card but got the same result. Upgrading to 11.04 has made no difference either.

It does *try* to connect but fails, so I think the card is installed correctly. I've also tried a full reset on the HomeHub and the setup works fine with W7.

Debian Configuration :: Adding Compex ReadyLink NIC To Debian Lenny?

Nov 4, 2010

I have added a 10 Mbps network card to my SGI O2 MIPS workstation running Debian Lenny running the 26-2 kernel. The workstation already has an onboard NIC which is working fine.(eth0).

lspci -v shows ths card as:-00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Compex ReadyLink 2000 (rev 0a) Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 18 I/O ports at 1800 [disabled] [size=32] Upon googling I found out that this card is an NE2000 clone. I downloaded the latest 2.6.36 kernel sources and did the following:-

1. Make Menuconfig
2. Loaded an alternate kernel config file (my working kernel config file)
3. In DeviceDrivers->Network device support->Ethernet (10 or 100 Mbit)

I selected ASIX AX88796 as the help associated with this showed it as an NE 2000 clone. configured it to be a module and did make, make_modules and make_install. Edited /etc/Modules to load ax88796 and added an alias eth1 ax88796 to this file. copied the new kernel to the /boot and did a reboot, the machine booted up fine and udev -r showed the 2.6.36 kernel and lsmod showed ax88796 loaded. But, Iam not able to bring up eth1 using:-

ifup eth1
The error messages given are:-
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth1: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device

Debian Installation :: Debian/Lenny On A Clamshell IBook?

May 3, 2010

I'm trying to install Debian/Lenny on a iBook clamshell. I couldn't seem to burn an install CD that the iBook would recognize, so I eventually copied the contents of the CD onto a self-powered USB drive and I can now get the iBook to boot off of that thru open firmware. However, when I get to the Debian installer main menu, it still won't read the CD, and apparently it does not have network drivers to install over Ethernet. Is there any way I can supply a driver for the ethernet interface (lspci reports that its a sun GEM ethernet interface) or somehow convince the installer to install from the content of the USB drive (which is a duplicate of what's on the installer CD)? Heck, if it'd be easier to get the Airport interface running to reach the Internet I'd be up for that too.
