Debian :: DHCP - Does Not Release Expired IP Leases
Sep 13, 2010
I utilize the dhcp server in Debian to hand out IP adressing for around 2500 clients. It works flawlessly except that the lease tables dont seem to release expired leases. I have tried setting shorter lease times with no luck. I can manually delete expired leases.

I have been routing network traffic based on MAC addresses, so we can distribute traffic evenly over a series of WAN IP addresses.Everything seems to be going well, but I have a very curious problem. One of the users can connect to the network without problem, but I don't see him in my network administration application (neither his MAC address or leased IP address). At the same time, I'm trying to identify other unknown computers on my network based on MAC addresses I don't have on file.

I have a router with ddwrt on it that runs a DHCP server. What I want to do is only allow people who have pre-determined MAC addresses to get an address to get on my network. That being said I have a VM set up as a DHCP Server. Since doing this I will be setting the dhcp settings on my router to be a forwarder to the VM. Is there a way to allow only static leases in the dhcpd.conf file? I do not just any computer on my network to get an address I want to base it on MAC addresses.

I want to install (or compile myself) a previous kernel release (2.6.31.13). Where can I get it?
I mean a Debian Kernel with all your patches etc.
I'm using Debian Unstable. I just noticed that it was the quickest kernel (well, maybe for me only and my hardware).

I want to use a rolling release. I have distro hopped and know I want Debian (not a derivative like LMDE) and a rolling release. Is testing updated so you never have to do an upgrade or re-install when a new version is out? Or, do you have to add Sid Repos to never do another re-install when new version comes out?

I have found some stable releases of packages I use which are included in Debian stable to be outdated. For example: I use Kdevelop. I absolutely love it. Checking Kdevelop.org says that latest stable release is 4.2.3.However on my system, the latest stable package found is 4.0.1 In my sources list I've selected to use only stable packages:
deb http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main
deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free
BTW, I assume this is how I only get stable packages ? Why is it that although there are newer stable releases of Kdevelop, the latest (stable) found on Debian is 4.0.1 ? Is there something I can do in order to include those newer stable releases, other than downloading the source from the wesbite and building/installing ? I really like the way Debian handles it's packages, and I understand that Debian has it's own ways of doing things.

I am doing a new Debian install on an older Dell laptop (Latitude D520, but that should not matter). I downloaded the net install .iso, burned it to disk, and ran it. Everything was progressing like any other installation I have done until I was asked to pick the mirror. I chose ftp.us.debian.org like I normally do and it was rejected. When I checked the output on virtual console 4, I am seeing the message "mirror does not support the specified release (jessie)."
I tried a bunch of random mirrors, including international ones, and they all give me that message.

I am trying to create a local debian repo for 3rd party apps and my own deb's. I have done the following: dpkg-scanpackages debian | gzip -9c> debian/Packages.gz Which did create a file called Packages.gz in the directory However, when I do apt-get update on a client machine I get the following error: W: Failed to fetch [URL] Could not connect to 10.1.1.10:8080 (10.1.1.10). - connect (111: Connection refused) W: Failed to fetch [URL] Unable to connect to 10.1.1.10:8080: W: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I am wondering about when Gnome 3 is released, how long until it's in the "stable" repositories?I have generally used Ubuntu, but I don't like the Unity interface they are pushing out in the next version, so I am greatly considering simply using Debian. Debian also is my first consideration because Ubuntu is based off it.But, I want to try the Gnome 3 interface first. I already have Debian installed and updated, and am now simply waiting on the GUI.

Can't seem to figure out how grml is stopping the auto-dhcp during boot by default in grml network is disabled. I tried init.d, inittab, or whatever I cannot seem to find anything? I need eth0 to come up automatically at boot grml, for some reason won't remember my net setup and must re-setup at every boot? How can I make it do that?

My hardware platform is an old laptop built on an ATI motherboard and chips. It has 1.9G of RAM and 80G Hd. After months of trying distros here and there I have settled on Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper drake because it has a built-in module for my ATI Radeon 200m, it uses the hardware good enough without necessarily setting some Grub-time parameters like noapic, noapci, etc.
But the LTS is already expired and I can no longer Synaptic for the applications that I am in dire need of. I have even tried to compile backward WinehQ 0.9.9 but it did not make, requiring me to update libs and gcc, which, aside from being over-engrossing I have no luxury of time for that. Also recent softwares are built upon newer kernels which Dapper cannot cope with.Is there a way to obtain a DVD containing all the software compatible to Dapper that I can use offline and include it in the source.list paths?
Or, is there an online repository STILL available today, canonical or not, that provides a key so that I can still apt-get or synaptic to it?Is there a work around that I can do of for my purpose?I have spent two days already thinking about and tinkering but the result of my labor is unsatisfactory

I get an expired key warning every time I add a repo from the OBS. Creation/expiration dates are the same each time. This alway happens in the OBS, not Packman or elsewhere. I've tried cleaning the metadata and cache, and doing a rebuild with rpm. I've removed all of the existing keys associated w/OBS. Somebody know what this is about? I can't think of anything else to try.
