Debian :: Auto-dhcp In Grml - Debian-based?
Aug 9, 2009
Can't seem to figure out how grml is stopping the auto-dhcp during boot by default in grml network is disabled. I tried init.d, inittab, or whatever I cannot seem to find anything? I need eth0 to come up automatically at boot grml, for some reason won't remember my net setup and must re-setup at every boot? How can I make it do that?

I'm using the most recent version of Xorg that is available in the Debian repository (unstable) and it flashes the NVIDIA logo and crashes the whole computer immediately after. Ctrl+Alt+F[0-9] do nothing when this happens.
I've tried reverting to an older NVIDIA driver, but they either cause the same issues (27x.y.z) or require version ignoring for ABI (26x.y.z) which leads to a segfault.
I would be fine running vesa for now, but it doesn't support 1366x768 resolution so I either have to deal with a bad resolution or have part of the screen cut off.

I have a Truecrypt-encrypted Windows [system] partition, that I want to be opened and mounted automatically (using a keyfile) when I log into Debian, since it is also encrypted and I don't want to type two passphrases. It think this could be done with LUKS. With TC I probably have to go with the CLI, but haven't figured it out yet. And I can't add a keyfile to the volume using the GUI. In order to mount the volume I have to tick the Mount partition using system encryption (preboot authentication) checkbox, or otherwise I get Incorrect password or no TrueCrypt volume found. And same when I try to add a keyfile.

I notice that on DistroWatch, the descriptions include "debian based", "arch based", etc. For the newbie, is there any practical difference between the different bases, or is it a Coke vs Pepsi type question?
Is a distro based on Debian say, easier for a newbie to learn or work with than say one that is FreeBSD based?

Debian and debian based distros issue has a issue that has come to make it self aware to me when I was trying to burn a video on my hard drive with braseo and it won't let me burn more than 4.4 gigs to a dvd with 4.7 gigs of free space even a file that is over the 4.4 gig limit by a megabyte with windows i didn't have this problem. One more thing I have 16 gig flash drive and on debian and debian based distros i can only use 13.1 gigs of it but on fedora I can use all 16 gigs.

I press On-button, Debian boots, logs in and automatically connects to the Wireless network AND! to my local pc via LAN. It runs an ssh server, so I can ssh into debian over internet and communicate with the local pc (send a magic packet).Here are my problems:
1) I don't how to log in automatically. This and this doesn't work.
2) I need a network tool that can manage multiple connections and has a reconnect feature. With the default network manager I cannot even connect to more than one network simultaneously although I have two network devices of course.
And I guess I can run all that in console mode, right?

The most recent flavour of Linux I've been using has been Sidux, but the update cycle in sid is a little too fast for my liking.
What I'm looking for:
- Debian Based
- KDE 4.X
- Ideally it would still be able to use debian archives (ie like sidux)
- Updates less often than sid, so you aren't a long way behind if you miss a week, but often enough to still have up to date versions of software.

I need to reinstall my distro, MEPIS, but--mostly just because I feel restless--I'd like to try another Debian-based distro. It has to be Debian-based because I'm comfortable enough with apt-get that I don't want to learn another package management system; and I want to avoid Ubuntu and distros based on it, because I've long since decided I don't like the decreased user control in Ubuntu. What are my choices? If I want to leave MEPIS and don't want Ubuntu, I don't really know what there is other than Debian itself. I don't know if I feel like tolerating the supposedly greater difficulty of Debian, but I would otherwise expect to feel at home in it, since MEPIS is based on it. And does the Debian Project still make a version small enough to fit on one CD?

We have a large number of devices on our LAN with the mac prefix of 00:60:60. We want to assign these addresses from a separate address pool. I've created two classes, one to match 00:60:60 and another that I want to contain any other device. When i try to start the server I get:
/etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf line 33: boolean expression expected
match if not binary-to-ascii(16,8,":",substring(hardware, 1, 3))
^#this carrot should be under the last parenthesis#
Configuration file errors encountered -- exiting
Here is the relevant section of /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf
class "006060" {
match if binary-to-ascii(16,8,":",substring(hardware, 1, 3)) = "00:60:60";
}
[Code].....
I've tried a few variations on that line. I've spent days trying to find any examples of "match if not" and haven't found anything. I assume it's going to be something to do with parenthesis/quote placement. Oh and this is ISC DHCP Server V3.0.4.

I am working with a bare bones lenny that connects fine to an ADSL router using wireless ethernet and a fixed IP. I am trying to reconfigure to use DHCP but it isn't happening.
I'm using the following page as a reference... An introduction to Debian networking setup
ok I modified my /etc/network/interfaces file as follows...
# The primary network interface
allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
dpkg --get-selections shows I have the following installed
dhcp3-client install
dhcp-common install
as I understand, that is all that is needed. However when I try to ping the router I get the error network unreachable. ifconfig does not have an inet addr. in the wlan0 section. dmesg | grep dhcp shows nothing at all.

I have a scenario where a Debian (in this case) device will be connected to an existing LAN.What I then want said box to do, is to query the LAN to see if there is an existing DHCP server present. If there isn't one - then simply use the Debian box as the DHCP server (which works fine atm).If there is an existing one - I need the Debian box to be able to turn off it's own internal one and get it's details from the existing server (ie. change from server to client).
These action will need to be sat in the background as well - just in case another DHCP server appears on the LAN after this box does. Don't shoot me for saying it - but I know Windoze server does this. Is there a 'script/util' that anyone knows of (I am trying to do this auto-magically)?

I'm trying to setup a DHCP server that serves several different VLANs, we have 5 in total. Our network is working correctly, with static IPs, we're able to ping across without any issues.
When I connect my debian box to an interface on VLAN5, statically assign an address in the correct range, it works. Similarly with all other VLANs.
To configure this box as a DHCP, I set one of the ports on the switch as trunk, connect that to the debian box to allow all VLAN traffic to reach my debian box.
I setup DHCP following the steps on [URL] ....
Then I configured different VLANs by following the steps on [URL] .....
However, with the vlans setup, I am unable to ping anything. This is essentially what I did.
Code: Select allSet the port on the switch to trunk with 802.1 encapsulation
disable eth0
vconfig add eth0 5 # to add vlan 5
ifconfig eth0.5 192.168.5.254 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
vconfig add eth0 5 # to add vlan 10
ifconfig eth0.5 192.168.10.254 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
[Code] ....
I do not know why I am unable to get any connectivity through my VLAN interfaces.

I am connected to a network using any interface (eth0, eth1, or wlan0) that if my ip address was given out (dhcp) that my desktop responsiveness gets worse. Specifically the mouse has a sort of "sticky" feeling. I mean by that that I'm moving the physical mouse and the cursor is getting stuck here or there on the screen. It is extremely annoying. Here is my config file:
beethoven:~$ cat /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf
# Configuration file for /sbin/dhclient, which is included in Debian's

I have setup a few machines within my house. The Debian Squeeze machines do not provide a host name in the DHCP client list on my router. Strangely, my Ubuntu, Android, and Blackberry machines do show host names. I have noticed the same behavior when wirelessly tethering my Debian laptop to my Android phone (which also uses DHCP). Is there something I need to enable to have the name show up on the router?

I utilize the dhcp server in Debian to hand out IP adressing for around 2500 clients. It works flawlessly except that the lease tables dont seem to release expired leases. I have tried setting shorter lease times with no luck. I can manually delete expired leases.
