Debian Configuration :: Unable To Mount SSD And SD

Aug 26, 2015

I just installed debian and I love it so far. I'm trying to mount an ssd that I took from my previous window installation but it gives me this error:

Error mounting /dev/sdb1 at /media/meknoy/Fotoschijf: Command-line `mount -t "ntfs" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=0077,fmask=0177" "/dev/sdb1" "/media/meknoy/Fotoschijf"' exited with non-zero exit status 14: The disk contains an unclean file system (0, 0).
Metadata kept in Windows cache, refused to mount.
Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Bewerking niet toegestaan
The NTFS partition is in an unsafe state. Please resume and shutdown Windows fully (no hibernation or fast restarting), or mount the volume read-only with the 'ro' mount option.

How can I sort this out? The data on the disk is important and I can not lose it.

Then my SD card with photos on it has about the same problem.

It gives me this message:

Error mounting /dev/sde1 at /media/meknoy/NIKON D7100: Command-line `mount -t "exfat" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000,iocharset=utf8,namecase=0,errors=remount-ro,umask=0077" "/dev/sde1" "/media/meknoy/NIKON D7100"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: mount: unknown filesystem type 'exfat'

Debian Configuration :: Mount Network Drive With CIFS

May 6, 2015

So after having spent the past half year preparing to abandon Windows and come over to Debian I finally made the switch last night only to realize I forgot one important thing... I didn't figure out how to map the network drive on my Windows server (currently learning to replace this with Debian as well) to my Debian system.

I have read about 15 links but keep getting the following error: Mount Error (6): No such device or address

Here is what I'm trying to enter into my terminal (with important bits removed for security of course)

mount -t cifs //xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/Network_Storage/ -o username=xxx,password=xxx /mnt/cifs

Debian Configuration :: Cannot Mount Drive After Upgrade To Lenny

Jan 17, 2010

Basically, I have no trouble booting off a really old kernel like 2.6.18-6. If I try to boot off the newest one installed with Lenny, I get errors such as "mounting /dev/ on /root/dev failed...ditto for /sys on /root/sys" almost as if it's failing to find the drive. This finishes up with "target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init" and I'm dropped into a busybox shell. It's an ordinary SATA drive, which is being used as an OS drive only. It seems as if something has changed with the newer kernel, but I have no idea where to start or what to look for.

Debian Configuration :: Allowing An Application To Mount A Drive Without Sudo?

Mar 8, 2010

is there a way to allow a program mounting a drive without requiring it to ask for sudo password (apart from running it with sudo)? To be more specific, I'm annoyed by the sudo password request by TrueCrypt whenever it needs to mount a volume.

I've thought about creating another user, allowing it to mount volumes and then running TrueCrypt as this user at boot. I don't know whether GNU/Linux allows for such policies... maybe I should look into SELinux?

EDIT: For the issue at hand (encrypted USB stick both on Windows and Linux), I'm investigating FreeOTFE. I'm still curious about the privileges issue, anyway.

Debian Configuration :: Failed To Initialise HAL, Cannot Mount An Ntfs Drive?

I`m unable to mount my second hard drive I use to store my music and pics and wonder if it is to do with the error "failed to initialise HAL!" which I get every time I start Debian Lenny (AMD64 architecture). I have had this since doing an install (fresh) a few hours ago.

The drive is an ntfs one but when I click its icon in the computer section it says it cannot mount it and gparted says it cannot read the file system. If so how would I get the error box to stop appearing and how do I mount the ntfs drive?

Debian :: Unable To Mount Internal Drive And Others

Sep 24, 2015

I can't mount it, and also since apparently debian doesn't care about the nasty systemd but I had to deal with that but I digress.

I cannot mount my itnernal drive, and even memory cards are listed as "permission denied" even though I am part of the disks group. I know that before systemd I could just edit a udisks config file but I cannot find out where it'd even be.

I've included my /etc/fstab.

Code: Select all# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
# device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
# that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).

[Code] ...

I am part of the disks group, and am 90% sure that I edited the udisks file that says something about mount internal disk to allow active from allow_admin

The only udev rules that i've changed was the one to change the mount point for external drives to /media/drive_label instead of /media/$username/drive_label

Basically I'm trying to automount the partition after clicking on it in the file manager.

It mounts from a live CD and all the data is perfectly safe. Debian :: Google Maps Street View And Iceweasel

May 20, 2015

I've been a Debian convert for several years now, and generally use the Iceweasel browser (currently 31.7.0) supplied in the Debian repo. I've noticed that since Google Maps added 3-D effects to its Street View interface, and changed things up a bit, that it siezes Iceweasel. You can't "drive" the streets without the screen hanging. I'm running Debian 8 AMD64, and the free Noveau drivers for a Radeon 7570 video chipset. And I duplicated the problem on another PC with an onboard Intel video chipset.

Here's what I attempting in debugging things:

1. Installed the latest Adobe flash (not sure this was necessary).
2. Tried using the non-free ATI drivers, but ran into issues and removed those.
3. Tried tinkering with about:config webgl settings -- but there's a number of those, and I didn't know the minimal number to tweak, so I reverted back to defaults.
4. And unless I'm simply missing something, the "Lite View" option for Google Maps seems to have recently disappeared.

So Google Maps Street View still wasn't working. Then I stumbled across some references to using "force=webgl" as an URL parm in Google Maps: [URL] ....

Out of curiosity then, thinking the issue is not at my end at all, I downloaded the User Agent Switcher for Iceweasel and changed my agent's response to the latest Firefox on Windows 8.1. Reloaded the Google Maps Street View, and bingo -- it works great. Google doesn't like Iceweasel because of that name in the user agent?

This is a klunky method of using Street View, and I have filed an issue with Google (but I give that about as much odds as writing one's congresscritter). Or is there some easier way to use Iceweasel with Google Maps Street View by making more about:config webgl tweaks?

General :: Mount External USB Drive In Debian To A Mount Point Based On The Volume Name

May 5, 2011

How do I configure my Debian installation to mount external USB drives to mount points based on the volume names of the drives? For instance, if I have a thumb drive with the volume name of "SWORDFISH," how do I have Linux mount it at /media/SWORDFISH? I'm aware that this can be setup in FSTAB, but that requires that I know the UUID of the device beforehand and that I take the time to set each external device up in FSTAB first. That does nothing for me when I have a thumb drive that has never been plugged into my computer before.

This seems to be setup by default in Ubuntu/Kubuntu, but is not working for me with a fresh installation of Debian Squeeze and KDE4. I've spent the past 2 hours Googling for a solution and have turned up nothing. UPDATE: My results are inconsistent. Sometimes Debian mounts devices to mount points based on the volume names, and other times it gives them generic mount points (e.g. /media/usb1).

OpenSUSE :: Did Gnome Integration Change Between SLED 11.1 And 11.2?

Apr 27, 2010

apps that ran and installed just fine under 11.1 don't (seem to) under 11.2.I was running Gnome under 11.1, and have used the same desktop as I moved to 11.2.For example, I was able to install and run the Novell Support Advisor 1.1 under SLED 11.1 just fine. I would need to authenticate as root before the app would run, but it would run just fine. After I upgraded from SLED 11.1 to 11.2, things just don't seem to be as stable. NSA (and other apps) seem to install, but their icons don't appear in the applications folder, and when I login su and then attempt to run, the terminal window usually hangs.

I can't get a CIFS client to install (I see it in the list of installed apps, but it's not present under YAST).Banshee was a beautiful app under 11.1, but I feel like I spend more time working around it's glitches in 11.2 rather than setting it to play and enjoying it's usefulness. The Novell Client (yes, I know, it's not officially supported under 11.2) has caused me enough heartache that I VNC an XP box just to get to files. So anyway, enough whining, what can/should I do to work through these issues? Should I just give up and go back to 11.1? Is it better to burn and re-build rather than upgrade per the OpenSUSE docs? Is there some "magic" log files folder (other than availble via YAST) to see where error messages are occurring so I can troubleshoot the issues better?

Ubuntu :: Cyberpower UPS Integration With Gnome Tools Possible?

Jun 1, 2011

I recently purchased a Cyberpower CP1000PFCLCD UPS and much to my surprise when connected via USB to my PC (running Natty) the Gnome Power Management tool is able to see it and read some data, however the support is not complete. Gnome always thinks the UPS is supplying 0.0V although it is does properly read some data such as 'Time to empty'. Is it possible to configure the Gnome power application to properly speak to the UPS? If its not possible to have Gnome play nice with this UPS is it possible to at least have the UPS be ignored by the power mgmt tools?

I am able to use the Cyberpower utility but it would be slick to be able to use the Gnome tools for its history and statistics.
