I'm attempting to install some software on my friend's computer. It keeps saying the packages I want aren't there but I know they are. I've been fooling around with this for a while. I may have broken something in the process. Repository names, perhaps?Is there some way to reinstall Synaptic/Aptitude and "wipe the slate clean?"
View 6 RepliesI need to wipe the slate clean on my computer and start from scratch. I have too many issues and school is just around the corner for me, I've got a huge workload and don't have time to find solutions to my problems right now. I recently upgraded to Lucid but that only escalated my woes. The simple fact is my machine is getting too old and it's time to upgrade everything, which won't happen until fall. So for now I simply want to downgrade to hardy because it will be supported until April next year and it is very stable, plus I think it is the release that my graphics card got a decent resolution on (ATI, need I say more?). I'm somewhat of a noob, but I've got my wits about me and have researched the forums for many hours to find solutions, but to no avail. I don't want to go into details about what issues I'm having, I just need to know how to remove ALL kernels off of Grub and start from scratch. Any links to comprehensive tutorials would be ideal, or if someone knows of anything else that will work,
P.S. I love Ubuntu and am a lifer. The philosophy behind it as well as the community are supreme and will someday rule the universe,
I just install Ubuntu on a new computer I got, and set up LAMP. I started poking around in MySQL (more than I should have) and managed to break it. I've been trying to fix it, but I can't. I've done apt-get --purge mysql-client, but when I reinstall it it's the same thing. How can I reinstall MySQL (and PHPmyadmin) from a completely clean slate? (There's no important data on there)

It seems that every time I successfully uninstall/purge a package (along with its dependencies), then the next time I try to install/uninstall anything else it wants to reinstall that package (and its dependencies). It takes several (I haven't counted) "don't install" instructions from me before it will forget about it.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo in essence, my drive has become a cluster of random partitions, multiple Ubuntu installs, and random windows systems. It's gotten so bad that on my entire 250gb system my main Ubuntu install only gets 40gb of memory. Could anybody give me a step by step guide to do the following:
1. Completely wipe and departition my disc.
2. Install Ubuntu from a backup .tar file
3. Install a 40gb windows 7 partition
I have had this problem repeatedly with aptitude recently. I run Debian Squeeze but in a somewhat unusual fashion - I create a custom live image using the builder on the Debian Live website and then run the live image in persistent mode off a flash drive. For all intents and purposes this has never behaved any differently from a standard Debian install and has given me a great deal of flexibility and power, for which I'm grateful.
However there's been one strange phenomenon that keeps occurring. After a certain point - not before - aptitude stops removing dependencies when I remove packages, though in the ncurses interface the option is shown as switched on (and my .aptitude/config file does not switch it off, nor does any other configuration file that I can find, though maybe I'm missing something). This occurs even in the case of dependencies which I know cannot be depended upon by any other package. e.g. the e17 package in unstable brings in libecore, libevas etc. which are depended on only by e17 as I have no other Enlightenment packages installed. But removing e17 removes only the e17 package and not the dependencies.
The other odd thing is that this does not occur at first. Aptitude works fine for a while on a clean system. At some point though it simply changes in behaviour.
I messed up the first installation of Fedora on my server. My setup is as follows: Fedora and Gnome - NFS system, No dual boot (Windows or anything) Fedora ISO DVD downloaded No kickstart or other tools. how to set this up, from the time I insert the disk and have it boot up (configged already to boot from it). I know how to wipe it clean at intall time. Is that the root directory? And, is /boot the actual boot directory? I'm just having a hard time uderstanding that. As I said, I just want a quick itemized list, step 1, step 2, etc, from partitioning, creating file system, mounting, etc. in the right order.

I'm developing with puppet, and I need to do an aptitude update from a specific file, here is my configuration: The file sources.list in /etc/apt/ is deleted. I've created 3 files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d each one with their repos:

All the repos are updated/refreshed , and I only want to refresh/update the specific repos insie of the file 01-debian_security_updates.list. On the other hand if I put some repos in the sources.list and delete the 3 files and I create an external file for example in /tmp/temprepo and I do the command aptitude update -o dir::etc::sourcelist=/tmp/temprepo it works fine.give some workaround to update and then upgrade packages from the files specified in my config.

My old-ish Dell laptop is currently running Windows 2000 and Ubuntu 9.10. I originally installed 2000 to try and squeeze a bit more performance out of the laptop for general use, but in practise Ubuntu is running great and sees far more use than the Win2K installation so I've decided to create a stripped-down (i.e. non-networked) XP installation purely to run a few favourite audio applications.
I plan to do a fresh Windows install and wipe the current C: partition. Is there anything I should be aware of in terms of the GRUB bootloader. Will it simply recognise the new XP installation? Obviously I will back up my data before I continue, but are there any other precautions to take with respect to dual-booting? I could do without having to reinstall Ubuntu too!
I had been doing some removal of packages, and things went well, or so I thought. Now whenever I try and install any package using aptitude, some old state is lingering around and wants me to install packages that I do not want, and remove some packages that I am not sure about removing (did I actually select those to be removed??) I removed libvirt etc, and now it wants to come back? Also, like I mentioned, why remove those other four packages?

Running squeeze, and enjoying it so far, apart from a broken out of the box synergy (compiled my own synergy-plus to fix that issue) and a buggy samba client.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIt's trying to fix/complete failed installs but keeps encountering the same errors (error message below). I'm running basically Testing, but there are a few Stable and SID packages due to issues with the blasted nVidia legacy drivers. I've swapped out the video board with an ATI board so that is sorted, but now I can't do any updates. Hoping there is some way to manually override apt's determination to try to fix all broken packages whenever I do anything (install, remove, update, etc). A Google search of this error message didn't turn up anything recent. Any thoughts are welcome.

I'm having problems with apt-get / aptitude / synaptic. When I run apt-get update or upgrade error i get following error message:

I've runned apt-get clean cmd, but it didn't help. Pc is pretty new with 8 GB ram etc. Synaptic and aptitude gives this error when you open those.
The purpose of that topic is to identify if there is any way to totally clean a debian system and make it like a fresh installed system (of course i amn't refering to packages because aptitude is just perfect?

I can consider my Debian Squeeze installation completed at the moment. In fact, it looks like everything is working with not so much effort:
- video graphics card
- keyboard
- mouse (both external USB and built-in touchpad)
- ethernet wired lan
- wireless lan (WPA!)
- sound (headphones and loudspeakers!)
- web-cam
What else? I think it's everything! Now I run a 'dmesg' command (see below since it looks like I cannot attach files) and I get some errors/problems/warnings (see below some rows which has been extracted from the whole 'dmesg' output) that I'm not able to "weight": are they true problems? Is it something I have to worry about? Can anybody suggest solutions to correct/solve the problems?

I forced the install of graph-tool package [URL]. Now it is of course tagged as broken, so update manager wont do anything. But I want to accept it, I know it is not really broken. (In fact, graph-tool_xxx.deb asks for libcgal4. squeeze only has libcgal5, so I am betting this is not an issue, as far as graph-tool is concerned.)
