Debian squeeze (weekly build) with latest kernel "2.6.32-5-686"
installed the latest updates, but latest updates to "Grub pc" crashed my system... it stops before login-screen. Unfortunately i can see any error messages, the screen stays black...
i have to re-install i guess...
I updated squeeze last night for the first time. It worked fine after 1st reboot last night. There was one reboot stalled at "hald" so I shut down and restarted. Worked ok 2nd time around
Today,upon login I got a string of taskbar notification (which I couldnt read as they all overlapped . I was able to see a kernel error message but couldnt report it (network was down) or save it (USB stick not recognised) Some programs worked, others didnt
I have the partedmagic rescue distro on USB stick so have those programs to use in order to fix the problem. Any idea how I can repair this? I tried fdisk for the hell of it. reported clean partition as predicted. I am using debian-testing-amd64-kde.
I have recently come across a Debian installation page for powerpc: viewtopic.php?t=20481. It got me motivated to fix the Debian I have on my iBook G4. I have a Debian Lenny installed on my iBook G4 -- but I have been having some sort of problem (mostly likely due to hardware) which causes the system to crash. After the latest crash, the clock on iBook has been readjusted. For this reason, I cannot reboot Debian completely.
Every time I turn on the computer it begins the booting process but before I get to my desktop I encounter numerous error messages concerning my clock. After either OK'ing or canceling these error messages, I get to my desktop but the system by then is either frozen or else not working at all. Worse, I can't even turn off the computer since the upper right corner of the desktop is completely blank and I have no menu to turn off or reboot the system.
It took this computer to a local Apple store and they ran many different hardware diagnostic tests on it. They concluded there's "technically" nothing wrong with the computer. But they said although the system has successfully passed all hardware tests, there may still remain some complicated but slight hardware glitch/es which the hardware diagnostics could not pick up.
The latest in experimental is 1.1... the stable by upstream is 1.2 and the latest unstable is 1.3. So is there a repository where I can get the latest unstable automatically?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have installed Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit on my new desktop. After installation all gone well.
The initial upgrades after fresh installation also ran well and I was able to reboot and use the system successfully.This was before three-days.Yesterday night I ran again the Update Manager and installed the available (4-5) updates and then I installed Sun-Java-JDK using Synaptic Package Manager using the packages from the canonical partners.
After installation was done I shut down the system and in the morning when
I restarted the system the login screen is coming up but on entering the login credentials a black screen with some text(unable to see the text) flashes and returns me back to login screen.I tried logging in with both normal and admin type users.But admin type user too encounters the same problem.
I have partitioned my 500GB into 5 partitions and there is sufficient data on each partition.
I assume fresh installation would fix it and the data on logical partitions would be intact but doing this re-installation would require me to install the updates again and do all the settings I did till now again.
I've got a problem when i try apt-get update I get the following in the report:

View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed a fresh version of squeeze, with kde, and it worked fine. After I untarred my backup /home and /etc, things came to a standstill. I got a final ERROR code after /home. After a restart I got a 'fix your system' warning requiring a Control-D, which I couldn't type. I had used tar -xzvpPf ...... If I had included a -w, which asks for confirmation before overwriting data, could I have prevented this problem.

For quite a long time now, I haven't even needed to re-install video drivers most of the time. However, ever since version 2.6.36-0.dmz.4, they haven't been. I booted my system after installing that kernel, re-installed the video drivers, and when that didn't work, completely removed them and re-installed them, and it still didn't work. Well, I was told that the installation was successful but even after restarting it appeared that they weren't working. I installed 2.6.36-0.dmz.5 today and the same problem persists. I tried an older kernel version (2.6.36-4 something) and they worked fine.

The device is "Atheros AR8131 PCI-E Ethernet Controller". I guess the problem comes with the old kernel of version 5. I was intending to compile the latest kernel anyway. So I installed the latest version after none of the "help" helped.Anyway in 11.04 I can no longer put icons on my desktop or find icons to start tasks I need like a terminal window for example. Wine doesn't even know it is wine anymore. Nothing is intuitive or automatic.Is there a simple way to find all the stuff or is this version set back to eliminate cometition with apple and windows. When I tried to follow the instruction, it said that sudo could not be found. Is this a directory problem? If yes, how do I rectify it?

I start my box from startx but after getting these updates, x tries to start, I see a mouse and a screen for a second and then it drops out again. I'm running the latest nvidia drivers from nvidia and have tried reinstalling them and they install fine, but no go.

My xorg.conf file is void of anything related to input devices and has been working a treat. So it would seem one of these updates has screwed evdev. I've tried reverting back to earlier versions, but I get the same issues. I was running squeeze with kernel 2.6.32-4-amd64 when all this happened. It was running like a trooper. I've now tried 2.6.32-5-amd64 but still no go.
After running "aptitude upgrade" I have been getting a message lately such as "There are x updates available, it is recommended to update your system". But, running aptitude update/upgrade again afterwards, aptitude ignores these supposedly available updates to the system. How can I clear up this situation?. I am using the latest Debian Squeeze distro

Trying to help brother whose computer quit working after he downloaded updates. Don't know Linux lingo but it looks to me like he has multiple flavors of Linux running: Gnome, ubuntu, xbuntu, kbuntu - probably more I've forgotten.
He knew nothing about computers at all and inherited a build-it-yourself computer kit that someone was throwing away. It came with a CD of Linux software. By trial and error he made it run and has managed to do some amazing things with photos and graphic design. But he downloads and launches EVERYTHING that suggests itself to him. Sometimes a thousand files at a time.
Now his machine boots but won't run any apps. It keeps giving him a message that he needs to "manually run" some "dpkg-something" but he doesn't know how to get to any sort of root or command prompt where he can enter a manual command. All he knows how to do is click icons. He's clicked them all. Now his computer is continually running screen after screen of programming language.
Is there any hope? Can we reinstall an OS without losing all of his files of graphics work? Which OS should he use on a fairly old and slow machine if his main (only?) use is graphic design?
and this morning's updates broke x. I get a blank screen instead of the login. I'm running an Nvidia 7900GS. I tried re-installing the Nvidia drivers... no good. I switched to the nv drivers and got further; I got the login screen, but when I try to log in it gives me the KDE splash screen and then takes me back to the login screen. I'm not sure what to try next.
View 13 Replies View RelatedIt's trying to fix/complete failed installs but keeps encountering the same errors (error message below). I'm running basically Testing, but there are a few Stable and SID packages due to issues with the blasted nVidia legacy drivers. I've swapped out the video board with an ATI board so that is sorted, but now I can't do any updates. Hoping there is some way to manually override apt's determination to try to fix all broken packages whenever I do anything (install, remove, update, etc). A Google search of this error message didn't turn up anything recent. Any thoughts are welcome.

Today it happened again: After an apparently trivial update Grub (Grub2) enters rescue mode the next time booting, not displaying any useful help whatsoever at that point. (Remember that at boot time no manual or help pages are available.) I don't know what went wrong, but ... The harddisk or partition in question is now no longer a bootable partition.
I don't want to use much time trying to sort out things, so unless someone may direct me to at better procedure, I am going to save whatever can be saved from the hd and then reinstall debian (in this case: Sqeeze) from scratch. Nothing else has in my experience ever worked before.
Are the 1.3 Wine packages availible at [url] compatible with the Squeeze kernel? What about future updates to the packages there?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using Squessze and Gnome. When I try to use the gui System>Administration>Network or Users and Groups I get the error The configuration could not be loaded. You are not allowed to access the system configuration.Everything was working before. I read around a bit. In some cases,it was caused by mismatching group and password files after using the gui. I do not know how to check if they are matching. Of course I do not know for sure that is the problem in my case.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have an MSI U100 Winbook with Ubuntu Workstation 10.04 LTS newly installed (about 4 days ago).
The update manager displayed about 15 or so updates for my 10.04 installation which I installed. Upon reboot, I can not successfully login to the desktop. It will take my username/password, the screen will go black for a couple of seconds, then the error sound, and back to the login dialogue.
A tail on /var/log/messages displays:
atkbd.c: Unknown key released (translated set 2, code 0xf7 on isa0060/serio0)
atkbd.c: Use 'setkeycodes e077 <keycode>; to make it known.
composit sync not supported
These messages keep repeating. I am able to login at the console just fine. I have enabled root login but get the same issues logging in as root. I have googled and found several articles and postings involving these messages but they are all in reference to upgrading from 9.x to 10.04. I did not upgrade and did not experience the freezing of applications as noted in those posts.
