When in Thundar (on XFCE - Debian 8.2) and I click the "Network" icon in the left sidebar the following message is displayed.
Failed to open "/ on". Specified location is not supported.
Like the forum for #1I'm using debian 5.0 with a modem to connect to the internetand eth1 to network my home computers. When I try to browse the internet with Konqueror, I have to disable eth1 then wvdial just to browse the internet. How do I fix this?Note: My resolv.conf has my primary DNS address in it, for my ISP (nameserver 67.211.172.29) and so on.

The clean install could see the network, then I installed the Samba server, and it hasn't worked since. Samba server never really worked, and I'm guessing I messed something up. I didn't have any problems when I was running FC13.I am able to get on the internet, and view the website I configured on this machine, but anything "network" related I cannot see.But now when I open Network, I am presented with MYGROUP, WORKGROUP, and my domain name (which is my actual "workgroup" as I don't have a domain). I cannot get to any of them - get the same timeout error as above.

I've started this new thread to try to diagnose and properly take care of this specific problem alone:
Browsing the internet becomes very slow, unbearably to the point everything keeps loading up forever. This only happen while having a torrent application opened, the effects are almost immediate, closing the application and browsing resumes as normal.
How about throttling back torrent? This does not work, it even doesn't even need be at top speed. With bare minimum connections and speed will still lead browsing to a crawl.
Even so, every other device on the network is un-affected, router and other PCs continue to browse and respond very well, making it a specific on the computer in question (but also happens on my other debian jessie machine).
Can I even reach the internet? Yes I can, and this is the weird part... I can ping, solve DNS and almost everything else without issues, the only thing affected is actually browsing the internet.
I'd even setup DNS cache with dnsmasq to see if it could speed things up. Disabled ipv6, and trying pretty much every method I could find.
Having pretty much ruled out dns problems and internet connectivity, I'm at a loss for what to look for and try. Only symptom I can describe now is that the browser will start to load up webpage but never completes... but only while torrent is active.
My current setup:
I'm on Debian Jessie, a desktop with eth manually connected. Using dnsmasq for dns caching. Disable ipv6 on the network (by the way, it keeps disabling it self I dunno why).
Running KDE with ktorrent as the client. The same thing happens on my setup media box, also Debian but with deluged running instead.
Browser in question are Firefox and Chrome, both have issues with this.
Turns out it was just a setting in my own router, that apparently limits numbers of connections made, meaning while torrent is working other connections were sure dead.
But it also happens when lots of connections are being made in other ways too. The router in question is Humax HG100R-L2, provided by my ISP. The setting is in the firewall section called IP flood detection.
Recently upgraded my PC and my WiFi Hotspot connection is refusing to connect. Running a dmesg returns this

I have been using Hardy for about 3yrs now and using dialup to connect to the internet. I have a 64bit ASUS with a nVidia ethernet interface........I have just recently switched to cable broadband with a wired connection direct to the eth0 port. I have another computer running puppy linux in which the broadband works. hence this is how I am typing this now. I have connected my ubuntu machine to the cable and the network admin shows a wired connection but will not let me browse on the net with any browser. Not really sure how I got puppy to find it, but it did.
I have used the network manager on both machines with one connecting and the other not. I know there a newer ubuntu's out but I really do like Hardy and want to keep it, but without internet connection other than dialup it seems a bit lame. I am not above using command line options as I use wodim and wget all the time, so my question is.
I installed centos 5.3 x86 at vrtualbox on windows 7 x64 as host. The ping answers "network is unreachable", ifconfig has an ip "192,168,51,100". At control panel, I seleted intel PRO/1000MT Desktop Host only. Is this centos's problem?

I just installed Debian and am getting a problem where I can't open the list of network connections. I can use the network manager applet to connect to wireless networks, but I cannot access the network connections list from there either (right click "edit connections)
I'm not incredibly knowledgeable with Linux, but I tried a few simple things I could think of like reinstalling the packages, or restarting the interfaces. (ifdown/up wlan0)
It's strange, because when I click "network connections," I see it show up for a second on the bottom panel, I get some rotating mouse icon while I wait a few seconds and then if goes away. Is there some kind of logfile that could help me identify the problem?

Apt-get did not work as well, and Chrome states that there is an error with the DNS lookup, which lead me to try:

I'm planning to use Debian as the OS for a firewall machine, which will sit between my internet connection and the rest of my computers. Now my network is all wired, no wireless whatsoever. I'm using the onboard the motherboards cat5 socket which seems to be using the VIA rhine driver and I'm also using a 3com 100MBps card.
I can list the machine spec if you want but it's nothing special, an old Athlon 64 rig with 1gb ram and an OEM motherboard, it all seems to work ok apart from the internet doesn't' seem to work. Lenny seems to detect both cards ok and I even used the net install CD and it managed to download everything using the 3com card.
The strange thing is when I'm in Lenny, I can't seem to connect. I can ping google, but when I try and view a webpage, the browser just sits there with a while screen... Could it be that using 2 network cards is confusing Debian? Right now I've only got the modem hooked up the the 3com card, and nothing connected to the onboard network card.
I have a acer aspire. I recently dual booted with xp and fedora14. we have wifi in the campus and the problem is : I am able to connect to wifi & browse in xp but on the other hand with fedora I am able to connect and the signal is also pretty strong, but I am not able to browse.I am using a firefox mozilla, we also have a proxy for which I have configured all the setttings.The error being displayed is "connection time out".

I have a new install of Debian Squeeze from debian-6.0.0-amd64-kde-CD-1.iso but I'm experiencing problems with the wireless internet applet in the taskbar.When the computer boots, it doesn't connect automatically eventhough I have it set as such. I have to fiddle with it until I get the request from KDE Wallet Manager to insert the password to complete the connection. I didn't have this behavior in Kubuntu.

But now I cannot connect to internet in F10, but I can connect to internet using windows xp. I have ADSL modem which automatically connects to internet when it is switched on. When I press any site name in Firefox it won't display any thing (in status it shows done).

I have a fresh install of Fedora 13 on my Toshiba Notebook. I am able to connect to the internet but can not browse neither by Ethernet or wireless. I have an Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG wireless card and a Marvell Technology Group LTD 88E8036 PCI-E fast Ethernet card installed. The command ifconfig shows an ip address. I am able to ping by URL and IP address. It does the same with the firewall disabled. I have also disabled the iptable & ip6tables in the services. I have even set fire fox not to use proxy settings. I am just not able to browse at all.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWe have two internet connections here, one through Allegro which goes through an ISA 2004 box and an ADSL2+ connection.Everything works fine when connected via the ISA box. Windows machines (and last I checked, a Macbook) work fine on the ADSL2 setup, but nothing Ubuntuesque will work properly through it.DHCP is fine (and the same thing happens with a static IP), it gives a proper address, DNS works fine, it's just whenever a page attempts to load, Firefox will sit at the "Waiting for <site>..." status until it gives up. apt does the same thing.What I've tested it on so far is:
- a homemade 9.10 box
- an IBM xSeries 346 running 10.04
- an Acer Veriton M460 running 10.04
- an Acer Travelmate 6293 running 10.04
None of them will work with it. The Travelmate and the IBM are dual-boot, both will work fine on the connection under Windows. The Veriton is Windows only (tested using a Live CD) and is much the same.The router is a Thompson TG782T (Telsta branded). I'm at a loss with this. Any ideas? I can provide more info if needed.
Yesterday, I had the problem where I would browse to linuxpc2 and it would send me to linuxpc5. Theses computers are on my AD domain (server2003), so I decided to set a dhcp reservation on the server and del /var/lib/dhcpcd/*.* This fixed 1 of the 3 linuxpcs that had mixed up or matching ip addresses. What is happening now, and I've never seen this happen before, maybe it's a server thing, I'm not a huge network guy, so here it goes... from the server I can brows with the explorer to linuxpc2 and all is well, it's IP is 192.168.0.150, but when I ping it, or do anything command line (ping linuxpc2) it pings the address 192.168.0.101 (it's old address). From a linux box browsing to smb://linuxpc2 shows me no shares, and ping goes to ...101 address. If I brows to smb://192.168.0.150, all is well and ping 192.168.0.150 is fine also. What could be causing this? only 2 of my 8 linuxpcs are doing this. all installed and configured within the same day using suse 11.1 and updated.

How can I sort this out? The data on the disk is important and I can not lose it.
Then my SD card with photos on it has about the same problem.
