I'm having trouble working with Xen on debian, I have many centos servers running Xen and have no problems. Everytime I start or stop a XEN vm it kills networking on the host OS for about 30 seconds. It doesn't respond to pings or anything, then it returns and everything works. I have asked about this issue in #xen on freenode.

1) A movie player that actually can stream the movies without stopping every 12 seconds to reload?
2) I have a soundblaster Xfi sound card that I cannot get to work on Ubuntu 10.4. It has my midi ins and outs on it so my key board and recording suite is shot.
I have a bit off a strange one here, my internet stops and starts. One minute it is fine and the next it will not connect to any web pages or even to the router then its fine again. My machine is a new build Pc were I installed 11.04 as a fresh install, everything was fine till a few days ago when this all started up. I connect to my router via a wired network, the new PC also has a second HD with windows 7 on it and that is fine with the net so I know it must be some sort off software issue but I have not idea what.

I'm trying to get a handle on starting/stopping and managing processes. I was playing around with rcconf and things I disabled (or enabled there) didn't take effect. I found the initctl command, so that led me to believe I'm using Upstart instead of all the rc and init directories. Is there any way to tell? Could I be running both? I'm running an Ubuntu 10.04 server.

I was able to get Apache installed but I cant't get it to start. The command I used to get it to start is "apachectl -k start" and got the response "command not found". Then I used the absolute path which is "/home/Administrator/Downloads/apache/bin/apachectl -k start" and got the response"httpd: could not reliably determine ther server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.1.1 for ServerName(13)Permission denied: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80.no listening to sockets available, shutting down". Please advise me on what to do. My eyes hurt from looking at the screen for so long trying different options and reading almost all the apache install instructions that exists. Just ready to have it up and running.

I use Sysv-rc-conf to turn on/off services. I initially turned off cups (I'm pretty sure it was on by default) using this method, but now I have turned it back on again, it won't start at boot. I have to start it manually each session. I've probably missed something but here goes anyway,

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have openSUSE 11.4 KDE 64 bit. openSUSE is really great, but I hate the freeze when I startup my computer. Desktop appears but I cannot do anything. This takes approximately 20 to 30 seconds and than my plasmoid-networkmanager shows network is up. As from this moment freeze is over.
I already tried to switch off ipv6 and put nomodeset in grub, though this is not helping. Does anyone have any idea what this is and how I can solve this?
I got a new cable modem so I could get rid of the one I've been leasing from the cable company. It is a Motorola sb6120. Everything is fine with the ISP, it's approved for operation on their network, the only hitch was I had to use my Windows laptop to run their activation software.
At any rate, with the new modem installed, I hop on my Linux box and go to work. I'm seeing some terrible delays in looking up names. When I look with firebug, all the dns lookups for new names are taking 15+ seconds. First I just think maybe the names aren't cached or something is weird for a minute and it will get better, but no. After several restarts and then a couple days persevering with the new cable modem, all DNS queries are still terribly slow (including zypper, mail client, web client).
Suddenly I remember an issue I was having with, I believe version 11.1 when I first installed it. For just the computer on my network with a fixed IP address, DNS resolution was slow like this and if I disabled IPv6 then all was well. I believe there was even a patch issued back then for gethostbyname() that was supposed to fix the issue? So, when I disable IPv6, DNS lookup is back to normal. The two Linux computers on my network had been working fine with IPv6 and the old modem, though, and the Windows box is still working fine even with the new modem.
I can disable IPv6 and make it fast again, but really why should I have to?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from Fedora 10 to Fedora 11 last night in response to a pop up window. When I rebooted after the upgrade my wife immediately complained about the internet not working. Actually the connection up was working but Fedora 11 upgrade had made it slow almost to a stop There are two XP machines the network behind a local D-Link wireless router with Comcast high speed internet. When I disable networking on the Fedora machine the internet connection immediately returns to normal on the other two machines. Also there is a second or two period after enabling networking for a quick upload or download before the connection clogs.I checked the system monitor network history and found that there is a constant networking send rate of just under 180 kb/s in the background.This occurs even when the browser, email client, and automatic backup are off and the only process showing significant CPU use in the system monitor is the monitor itself.
I tried netstat but there were so many /tmp/orbit entries that I could not scroll up to the top of the listing. Is this normal. If so, does anyone know the netstat command options to just see connections with sent packets. I also tried ifconfig -a. This shows no Rx packets at all, and no TX packets except on eth0, The total etho TX packets matches t,he reported by the system monitor, and in the monitor you can watch the total accumulate in approx 180 kb/sec increments. I don't understand why 180kb/sec TX would make a dramatic difference in internet network internet speed. Comcast reports upload speeds in megabytes. I need to be able to use the net in Federa, but I am also curious to learn what is the caused the problem.

I'm planning to use Debian as the OS for a firewall machine, which will sit between my internet connection and the rest of my computers. Now my network is all wired, no wireless whatsoever. I'm using the onboard the motherboards cat5 socket which seems to be using the VIA rhine driver and I'm also using a 3com 100MBps card.
I can list the machine spec if you want but it's nothing special, an old Athlon 64 rig with 1gb ram and an OEM motherboard, it all seems to work ok apart from the internet doesn't' seem to work. Lenny seems to detect both cards ok and I even used the net install CD and it managed to download everything using the 3com card.
The strange thing is when I'm in Lenny, I can't seem to connect. I can ping google, but when I try and view a webpage, the browser just sits there with a while screen... Could it be that using 2 network cards is confusing Debian? Right now I've only got the modem hooked up the the 3com card, and nothing connected to the onboard network card.

If i connect such a iso to a VM (using virt-manager) for installing a operating system i get the following error on startup: Error starting domain: internal error Process exited while reading console log output: char device redirected to /dev/pts/1 qemu: could not open disk image /mnt/iso/public/Linux/Distributions/Debian/debian-504-amd64-netinst.iso: Permission denied
The problem is definitly that kvm (or qemu or libvirt-bin, i don't know) tries to set permissions (rwx owner for libvirt-qemu, --- for kvm group, --- for other) on the file, although it has read permissions. Is it possible to change this behavior?
I'm facing an odd problem with a fresh install of OpenSuse 11.4 on a Dell PE-2950, using NIC Broadcom BCM5708C (rev 12) NetXtream II. Driver's are up to date. I'd installed vsftpd and configure it. I can connect from anywhere in the network where I setup this Server. The odd problem is that when I'm sending a big file (5.5 GiB for example), from another PE-2950 server (Windows Server 2003 64 bits R2) with another BCM5708C nic, the speed of the transfer starts at 90 MiB/s approx. but after 30 seconds , it drops to 15 MiB/s and never raise again. Driver's are up to date too.
However, from another Server in the network, a Dell R710 with SLES 10 SP3, the transfer speed is at 90-100-110 MiB/s all the time. The switch is a HP Procurve 2910al-24G, with all ports at gigabit speed. I'd tried with different FTP clients in Windows: WinSCP and the Windows's ftp client, but the result is the same: speed falls down after 30 seconds approx. using the Windows-Box.
cups does not start with the server. When I try to start from the terminal I get the error message
cupsd: Unable to read configuration file '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf' - exiting!
cupsd: Child exited with status 1!
The log files show nothing. cupsd.conf exists. It is user - root and group - root with permissions set at 0644.
My interpretation of this is that the program is not launching from either boot or terminal for a fundamental reason. I do not quite see what that reason is .
I've installed lenny recently and from the very beginning i've got problems with flash. While watching flash films on ..... and other sites everything is fine until I try to switch the film to fullscreen mode. When pressing the fullscreen icon, browser is killed at once. It happens in iceweasel and epiphany as well. I tried flashplayer-mozilla and flashplugin-nonfree from repos and the problem remains the same.

Whenever I try to play AC3 audio, after a few minutes, the audio dies and never recovers. This doesn't occur with mp3's / etc, although once the audio dies because of AC3, it's gone for good. So this is probably related to surround sound(?).
After I lose audio, speaker-test produces

K-Mixer won't even open afterwards. I flipped from GNOME to KDE because of this problem (PulseAudio freezed the system entirely).

Boot of a new minimal system hangs on "Stopping save kernel messages" or "stopping system v runlevel compatibility". I have ubuntu minimal iso x86_64 from usb stick created with unetbootin (don't have a cd drive on the machine in question), and after that I didsudo aptitude install gnome-terminal network-manager-gnome gdm geditsudo rebootnever got a system back. Annoyingly I can't boot into the recovery mode either, and it seems the keyboard is only semi-responsive (i.e. many dead keys when at the grub menu).qualms about reinstalling, but I've done this a few times and ended up at the same place every time.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a new install of Debian Squeeze from debian-6.0.0-amd64-kde-CD-1.iso but I'm experiencing problems with the wireless internet applet in the taskbar.When the computer boots, it doesn't connect automatically eventhough I have it set as such. I have to fiddle with it until I get the request from KDE Wallet Manager to insert the password to complete the connection. I didn't have this behavior in Kubuntu.
