Debian :: CJK Input Via Ibus Does Not Work
Nov 13, 2015
I am running Debian 8.2 (Jessie) with KDE 4.14.2. I use ibus to enter CJK characters. ibus is setup "the manual way" from URL....
Code: Select allexport GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus
export XMODIFIERS=@im=ibus
export QT_IM_MODULE=ibus
CJK input via ibus works for Qt4 applications such as Kate and Kwrite. However, CJK input via ibus does not work automatically with Qt5 applications, such as sqlitebrowser. I can get ibus running with Qt5 applications if I launch the application from the console like this:
Code: Select allQT_IM_MODULE=ibus sqlitebrowser
Is there way I can get ibus working with Qt5 applications automically without needing to add "QT_IM_MODULE=ibus" all the time?

I can't get Thai language input to work.
In "language support" I installed Thai, but it remains grayed out.
In "ibus preferences / input method", no languages are shown.
I added:
I added: "ibus-daemon --xim" to startup applications. No effect.

how to get IBus input methods to work in Adobe Flash Player? I want to type foreign characters in SharedTalk, a language exchange website which unfortunately runs entirely on Flash, but pressing ctrl-space to activate IBus does nothing and I can only type in Latin characters.
Or if it's possible by using something other than ibus, I'd also be interested.
I did a search but I can only find threads like [URL]this which refer to older Flash versions and claim that it's fixed now.

I just heard about the newly developed input method IBUS (ibus - Project Hosting on Google Code) the other day. Supposedly, it fixes a number of problems of SCIM (which, unfortunately, is pretty much dead upstream), and both Ubuntu and Fedora are moving toward making IBUS the standard input on their systems.
Interestingly, there's nothing on the openSUSE forums yet, so this thread is supposed to fill the void and become, eventually, a how-to guide for running IBUS on openSUSE 11.2. I've tried to get IBUS running the past few days, but without succcess so far. Perhaps some of you how got it up and running already can help me out?
[Code]...
The IBUS website also mentions the repository Index of /repositories/home:/swyear for openSUSE, but as far as I can see, the IBUS files don't exist there anymore.

For years I have been using scim-anthy for Japanese input under Linux. However just moving to ubuntu 10.10 I noticed that the development for scim has ceased and lots of people recommend moving to ibus. So I tried: I got ibus and ibus-anthy installed. I choose ibus as keyboard method input system under System->Adminsitration->Language Support ibus is up and running. I can see the icon. In ibus opreferences I added anthy under Input methods. I restarted X resp. the whole computer. I can choose Japanese-Anthy when clicking on the ibus icon. But nothing happens. I am still writing latin characters, no anthy popped up (like it used with scim), nothing.

I recently installed gnome 3, using the ppa -> dist-upgrade -> install gnome-shell method. IBus used to work fine with gnome 2.3 and unity, but in gnome 3, the icon is still there, the deamon is still running (I presume) but no matter where i click, it always shows 'no input window'... (for example, i can't type anything other than English here...).

I installed Kubuntu 10.04 and wanted to try if, finally, ibus works. I installed ibus and ibus-anthy from repository (I need the japanese input), then I launched Ibus preferences from the menu, set it, and the icon appears in the kickbar. But nothing happens if I press ctrl-space. Same problem there was on 9.10.I also added the lines to the home/.bashrc as the popup says.

export XMODIFIERS=@im=ibus

The magic key Ctrl+Space doesnt always work with SCIM. Too tired with SCIM, I decided to remove it and install ibus, ibus-qt, ibus-unikey (for typing Vietnamese).
Then, I start it with:
Code:
Then I try press Ctrl+Space to trigger but it doesnt work, even it quits itself sometimes.
The hotkey problem also occurs with KNotes. I have set Global Shortcut for some functions such as New Note, Show All Notes. And it works only once in that session. If restart machine, those shortcut is useless.
My system is Slackware 13.0 with KDE.

upgrading to9.10 I suddenly was unable use SCIM to switch language input methods. After searching around, I discovered that with Ubuntu 9.10 Ibus was being used in place of SCIM. That's all fine and good, but I can't get Ibus to work. Specifically, when I open the Ibus settings pane and add my desired languages, the settings aren't saved when I exit.So I tried switching back to SCIM. I changed my bashrc settings and set the keyboard input in language settings back to SCIM. No nice.Honestly, I just want to be able to swich language input methods--I don't care if I use SCIM or Ibus.

I've tried installing both ibus-anthy and ibus-mozc in Jessie but I still cannot input Japanese.
By contrast, In Wheezy, when using anthy for example, I can see ibus preferences icon where I can configure ibus and anthy. This doesn't show up in Jessie.

I am recent convert from Arch GNU/Linux after deciding that it's free software or bust. I'm enamored by your project (free software + large user base + stable releases supported for many years = precious, one-of-a-kind distro) and hope I can soon start contributing.
Anyway, I'm on Debian 8.4 with MATE, only main repo enabled, all packages up-to-date. I turn on ibus (via a keyboard shortcut that runs "ibus-daemon -dx") when I need to type in Portuguese or Esperanto. When I'm done, I quit ibus either by right-clicking its tray icon and choosing "quit" or by using a keyboard shortcut to "killall ibus-daemon". Unfortunately, regardless of how I quit ibus, iceweasel and icedove crash every time ibus quits.
I tried running ibus with "ibus-daemon -d" instead of the above command. Now there are no crashes when I quit ibus BUT iceweasel and icedove ignore ibus altogether (i.e., I cannot type special characters--keyboard input is as if ibus were off).
How to start and stop ibus in a way that both a) causes it to work in all applications including iceweasel and icedove AND b) iceweasel and icedove don't crash when ibus quits?

When I installed my 64 bit system of Ubuntu 10.04 the sound worked very well and I were very happy. The problem started however when I installed Skype which uses pulseaudio. As soon as I start skype (or any other application that uses pulse, HoN for example) the applications sound output or input does not work at all. If I have pulseaudio started in some way, applications that I suppose do not use it like spotify or flash player stops to produce sounds. And when I type "pulseaudio" in the terminal it gives me this:

I'm running 10.10 on two different laptops at home, via an Apple Airport Express. I wanted to use audiopulse to stream my music, o I installed that, and the Airport express utility for windows using Wine.I got everything working swimmingly, then my internet input wouldn't work. I can, say, upload from Transmission, but not use browsers or download anything. In a stupid fit of panic, I uninstalled everything I had set up, to see if that would help, and reset all I could. Still nothing, and now my sound is gone.

I used to be able to use Skype without a problem. I must have played with something as it now doesn't allow me to both use a microphone and external speakers at the same time.I go into sound setting and I am able to test the microphone (works) but then the speakers don't show, if I reverse the tests then the opposite happens.

My system is CentOS 5.5 x86_32, and I am currently trying to get the x264 video encoder to work and to read libav* input, like elementary H.264 streams. All the prebuilt x264 binaries seem to come without lavf and/or ffms support, and I was unable to build ffmpeg/ffmpegsource on my system. So these x264 versions only support RAW YUV 4:2:0 input, which is of no use to me. I would like to use the x264 binary itself, as it seems that ffmpeg+libx264 does not have option mappings for all the options I could give to x264 directly.
Is there any pre-built x264, that supports lavf/libavcodec for reading H.264 input? Or is there a good, working guide on how to build that on CentOS 5? When trying to build latest ffmpeg (trying to get ffms/lavf dependencies on my system), it tells me, that my "pkg-config" is too old, and that I should set FFMPEG_CFLAGS and FFMPEG_LIBS to work around the issue. No idea what I should do here.
Then, when trying latest ffmpegsource (again, to get the ffms/lavf deps satisfied), it tells me I do not have libx264. Maybe here my version is too old or something. I installed libx264_98, maybe wrong version.
Ah, the output of x264's configure script looks like this:
Platform: X86
System: LINUX
asm: yes
avs: no

I just implemented dracut on my Slack. It works well, but for this also I had to rebuild the kernel. Everything works as it should beside KDM. When KDM start mouse/keyboard don't work. I check the logs and I don't actually see any errors.Note: Im using Slack in VirtualBox with fbdev or vesa driver and it doesn't work with neither of the drivers. I suppose its something missing in the kernel, but don't know what. Before rebuilding the kernel and implementing dracut, everything work with fbdev and/or vesa

I recently got a real fancy unidirectional microphone, but when I go and use it, something strange happens. The mic is a mono mic, but when I record something, it appears to think it's stereo. Instead of having the same thing on both channels, it puts it all in the left channel, and silence on the right channel.
I tried fiddling with alsamixer. In capture (F4), adjusting the "Capture" device has an effect. However, it doesn't do anything useful. Lowering the right channel to zero does nothing, lowering the left channel to zero creates silence, and disabling the right channel creates silence.
In my System>Preferences>Sound (or pavucontrol, or what-have-you), there are "Analog Stereo Input" and "Analog Stereo Duplex" options there, but no "Analog Mono Input" or "Analog Stereo Output + Analog Mono Input" options (the latter being ideal).
Something interesting, though, if I do this:
Code:
arecord -r 96000 -D pulse -c 1 -vv -V mono /dev/null
it works correctly and outputs on both channels. But if I do
Code:
arecord -r 96000 -D pulse -c 2 -vv -V stereo /dev/null
then it's back to the same behavior. The VU meter on the second command shows the left channel going up and down as I make noise, but the right one always at zero.
The machine does have a crap internal mic built in to the screen bezel. If I do either of the above commands, they both work correctly. The stereo VU shows the same activity for both channels.
The machine is a Eee 1015PED, which has Intel integrated sound. Something probably insignificant is that the mic has a 1/4 inch mono plug, and to get it to plug into the Eee, I needed to get a 1/4 female to 1/8 male adapter. The mic's 1/4 plug is mono (duh) and therefore two-conductor, but the adapter I got is stereo, or three conductor (L, R, GND). I don't know if this is tripping something in hardware to tell it it's stereo or something.
I tried the mic on my desktop, which has a SB Audigy 4 (the non-pro flavor) and that has the "Analog Mono Input" function, so that works fine. Is there some way to turn this stereo input into mono input?

but now I've found an area where linux - or at least Ubuntu - just isn't in the game: inputting Chinese into documents. I've spent half a day trying to get iBus and SCIM to work, and not getting anywhere.
For those who don't yet understand, iBus and SCIM are alternative methods of entering western letters and being able to input a Chinese character in a document. It also works for other languages, like Japanese and Vietnamese, but I'm into Chinese, specifically Simplified Chinese.
On my Mac, I configured the machine for Chinese input and it just worked. Even on my wife's Windows machine, I configured the machine for Chinese input and it just worked. Not so on my linux - Ubuntu 10.04 - box. It just didn't work.
Nineteen times out of twenty I couldn't get the keyboard icon to display. When I did, I couldn't get it to select an input method (except once). And that once I couldn't get it to input anything. Most of the time it let me know that there was no input window, although I had both LibreOffice and Gtext windows open.
but I'll try again in a few years. It's going to take at least that long to make iBus and SCIM work. Normally I find that if I can do it on the Mac or in Windows, I can do it in linux, but this is one area where there's a lot of work yet to be done.
