Configuration :: Newest Upgrade Of Debian Testing Breaks Nvidia And Xorg / What's Going On?

Jul 1, 2011

I just updated my Debian testing as usual (apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade), and it totally screwed up Nvidia drivers. I had to revert to integrated graphic card to start Xorg.
After that, I noticed that libgl1-nvidia-glx is missing, and when I tried to install it back, it produces the following:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libgl1-nvidia-glx : Depends: libgl1-nvidia-alternatives but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

Any ideas what's going on with it?

Debian :: Xorg Configuration And Nvidia Drivers

Sep 29, 2015

While trying to solve the problem indicated in another thread [URL] .... I realised that I do not have the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Also, if I enter the command Code: Select allsudo kate I get

Code: Select allcannot connect to X server :0

I tried logging in to another terminal (tty3) and entered

Code: Select allstartx

Kate opened normally with root permissions.

Currently I have a Nvidia card but I am using nouveau drivers.

My question is: installing the Nvidia drivers (following the guide in [URL] .....) would fix these Xorg issues?

I had troubles with nvidia drivers in other distros....

Fedora Installation :: FC14 Upgrade Breaks X, Nouveau/nvidia?

Jun 17, 2011

My system with kernel-2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64, NVIDIA 3800 + Samsung 2233 and 3Dvision kit works fine, but upon upgrading to kernel-2.6.35.13-92.fc14.x86_64 the system won't go past the blue->white bar along the screen. The modprobe.d directory has the file blacklisting nouveau and there is the grub entry rdblacklist=nouveau, but do I need to re-run the nvidia installer. If so I think I need to reset the init level to stop X11 trying to load. and will I need to keep doing this everytime I upgrade the kernel if I have nvidia drivers installed?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Kernel Upgrade Breaks Nvidia Driver?

Jul 19, 2011

I've just installed Lucid Lynx on both my machines in the interest of sitting and waiting for the Unity/Gnome 3 storm to blow over. On the HP (see below), everything works great, and I've followed instructions online on how to upgrade to LibreOffice, upgrade the kernel to 2.6.38 using the kernel PPA, etc.

However, on the IBM, I'm using Nvidia proprietary graphics drivers. These work well on the stock kernel that 10.04 installed (2.6.32-32), but installing 2.6.38 seems to break the driver. If I install the driver first, and then the kernel on top, X stops working and I have to revert to the default, generic driver to get back in. Once there, I cannot install the driver again. The Additional Drivers dialog goes through the motions, but then drops a "systemerror: installarchives() failed" error message.

So, is there a different version of the driver I should be trying to install? I should clarify at this point I tried all three options the Additional Drivers dialog provided me, all gave the same result (version 96, version 173, and version current).

Or should I leave the kernel at 2.6.32? Is there any downside to leaving it?

Debian Configuration :: Kernel Modesetting Breaks Graphics?

Aug 1, 2010

Enabling kernel modesetting on my computer breaks graphics, but Xorg.log and syslog don't tell me much, because they don't log any error.

The symptoms are the following: boot goes on normally, then the KDM login screen is corrupted. On the login screen there is a big square instead of the cursor, and that square does move as I move the mouse. If I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 I'll get a black screen instead of the terminal, and from there I cannot go back to virtual terminal 7 for login. The only thing I can do is to issue sys-requests for read-only remount and reboot.

Where could I start looking for the problem? What does it seem to be related to, Xorg, kernel, radeon driver?

Debian Configuration :: Virtualbox 4.1 Breaks Suspend / Hibernate?

Jul 25, 2011

I have installed the latest virtualbox 4.1 on my desktop and laptop. It hosed suspend and hibernate.

The laptop is A Dell D630 with Intel Core2 Duo CPU, the desktop is an AMD based ASUS M3N78-VM mobo with Athlon II x2 250 CPU. Debian Testing 32-bit (same results with the 2.6.39 and the 3.0 kernels). Both have nvidia cards though - the desktop an integrated 8200, the laptop a NVS 135M. But suspend/hibernate was working before with the 4.0 series virtualbox.

The workaround is to clear the vboxpci vboxnetadp vboxnetflt vboxdrv modules from the memory before suspend/hibernate. I added the

service vboxdrv stop
rmmod vboxpci vboxnetadp vboxnetflt vboxdrv

lines to my sleep script (i dont use power managers, just the acpi powerbutton/lid scripts modified). Everything is ok now.

Debian Installation :: Upgrade To Lenny Breaks The Printer

Feb 11, 2010

I just upgraded to lenny (stable) from a working etch system. It went pretty nicely but I'm having a problem with the print system.

Ok, I have an HP Laserjet 4M+ connected to my system by USB. (I have another color printer too and a scanner but I don't use them often).

I use CUPS. I never bothered with the HPLIP packages because straight cups has always worked well.

What happens now is that I'll send a job to the printer and nothing will happen. The printer won't get it. Looking at CUPS on the localhost:631 page I can see that the printer is on, connected, ready; the job is there too but just stuck on "processing".

Now here's the thing. If I manually load the ehci_hcd module with "modprobe ehci_hcd" then the job will make it to the printer and it will print.

I can't just make that module load at boot time because if I do and the printer is off, it doesn't work. (I have to unload it and reload it). For whatever reason, I have to make sure that module gets loaded AFTER the printer is turned on, or nothing gets sent to the printer!

Debian Configuration :: Moving From Testing To Squeeze?

Feb 9, 2011

I have an older system that has been running testing for about 4 years. Originally I was running testing for several packages that were not yet available in stable. However, now that this system has a more crucial role in the network I have considered moving it to stable in hopes that it I can gain some insurance on it's uptime. It is important to note that I have never had a problem with the testing distribution and would be quite content to continue running it; I do want to know my options though.

I have not yet updated the system since the stable release of squeeze, I am considering to change my sources from testing to stable and just let apt take care of the rest. Anyone have any experience with such a thing? After searching Google I have found some solutions to force a downgrade, but that is really not what needs to be done here. I suppose I should have switched my sources to squeeze some time ago and this probably would have worked itself out.

A similar question is what happens a couple of years from now when another release happens. Have you had good luck updating from old stable to stable? I've run testing on several machines now for several years and have went through freezes and dist-upgrades several times with no major problems at all. Will I see the same stability if I move to the stable distribution?

Debian Configuration :: Wireless Config With System In Testing?

Nov 8, 2015

I'm trying to set up my Intel Wireless 3945ABG (which is supported in the kernel) and I don't understand where to start if I want to use systemd to do this.

I've installed my Debian (Stretch Alpha4) base system using the wireless to download the necessary components but when I boot into the system I need to set up the wireless card separately.

I would prefer to be able to install wireless without the requirement of connecting via ethernet so no package installs other than what is downloaded by the installer.

I can't even find documentation on this specific issue because everyone seems to reference /etc/network/interfaces which AFAIK is not supported in systemd. How do I configure a wireless card using only systemd?

Debian Configuration :: Nm-applet Doesn't Start After (Testing)

Feb 22, 2016

After the latest update of network-manager-gnome to version 1.1.90-3 , I see that I have to start the nm-applet in Testing from a terminal, otherwise I can't bring up my wired connection.

The usual nmcli networking on command is failing to connect, also restarting the network-manager.service with systemctl doesn't do anything, the only way to connect at this time is indeed to manually start the nm-applet from a terminal.

I've also spotted this message in the logs:

Code: Select alltraps: nm-applet[1105] general protection ip error:0 in libgobject-2.0.so.0.4600.2

Could it be something wrong with my configuration (although , it worked before this update) or is it some bug in network-manager-gnome 1.1.90 ?

I created the user zeitgeist, gave it a password, group and a homedir. Group of the user is nogroup and the homedir is correct with the 755 permission. My port 21 for FTP is open I tested it with nmap -p 21 [ip-address].

Debian Configuration :: Keyboard Freezes Periodically In Testing

Feb 17, 2011

This lasts a few seconds (can be 2-3 or sometimes even more like 10) and one's it comes back I get all the keystrokes I was typing during the freeze. The frequency of the freezes can be like 4-5 times every hour and are very annoying. I can't seem to relate them to anything, they can occur during heavy usage but also when the box is doing absolutely nothing but waiting lazily for me to type some google search terms.

Can anybody help me track this problem down? At the moment I am using a wireless keyboard but this must be unrelated since I tested a couple of other keyboards (both wireless and wired) and the problem persists.
