View 6 RepliesI have a major problem installing opensuse 11.3 on my computer( hp pavilion dv6).I downloaded openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-x86_64 from software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 11.3 and made a live usb.I'm a newbie at using linux infact i never used another operating system beside windows.Now i have installed windows 7 (on c disk 100gb).My first problem when i am trying to install opensuse is that he dosn't automatic choose to make my partitions so i have to do it manualy.I was searching how to make it the best way so i desited to make 4 partitons one for ' /boot' one for ' / 'one for '/home' and a swap partition/In windows7 i made 4 new partitons
3:10 gb for /boot
4:10 gb for/
5:70 gb for /user
6:10 gb for /swap
My first question is :Is this right to make 4 paritions in windows (opensuse can't format or resize my partitions it just can edit it ) so it's my only way to make partitions( If this is wrong how can i make partitions then)
My second question is how to change the bootloader configurtation because everytime when ii try to install opensuse it stops at about 96% and it says to reconfigure the bootloader options.
If i skip this i get the folowing message

I have used CentOS for a while and have never run into this issue. I searched all over and didn't see a similar issue anywhere, I did an install of CentOS as a server (no GUI) with only the base. Partition is /boot ext3, size of 100MB. The rest of the drive is partitioned as / with ext3. This is being done on a CompactFlash card of 32GB in size. The BIOS sees it as an IDE drive.
When the install completes and the system reboots, the grub stops at the grub> prompt. There is no menu for OS options. If I do the following commands:
grub>root (hd0,0)
grub>kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 root=LABEL=/
grub>initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.el5.img
grub>boot
I'm trying to install a dual booting machine with OpenSUSE v11.1 32bit and CentOS v5.2 64bit. I installed OpenSUSE first and allowed it to install and configure grub in the MBR and after that I wanted to proceed with CentOS v5.2. The installation went fine with two notable exceptions:- when I had to configure grub installation parameters, CentOS offered me only 2 solutions: either install it on the MBR of the first hard disk or not installing it at all. Other distributions are more flexible allowing you to install it in the boot sector of the root partition for example. Because I didn't want to ruin the existent grub onfiguration, I reluctantly accepted not to install it for CentOS assuming that I could manually configure the entry later in grub's menu.lst file.
- when I was presented with the options for software components installation, I've clicked on virtualization category/function because I intend to use the machine as a VMware host. There was no guidance on screen at that point and I blindly assumed that by choosing the virtualization function I would get necessary tools and drivers that will help me further on. It seems that this was a wrong move as you can see it below.
After completing the installation, I tried to search for a template or guiding on how the menu entry in menu.lst should look like but the grub directory was empty, not surprisingly because I've told CentOS earlier not to install it. Using the files in the /boot directory from the CentOS installation I tried to improvise a menu entry but it's not working. I just upgraded by box from Fedora Core 9 to Centos 5.2. Finally!I have a 500GB SATA drive, it's partitioned into three equal size slices, hda1 through 3. The old Fedora was on hda1, I installed the new Centos on hda3. I instructed the installer to write the MBR to /dev/hda, not /dev/hda3. Fdisk says I have sector 0 unused.First, the system wouldn't boot - it just looped through the BIOS, rebooting over and over again. The BIOS sees the disk, but it never loaded Grub. I tried re-running grub-install /dev/hda, and not I get a Grub Error 17 after stage 1.5 loads.
I can boot from rescue OK, the grub.conf man menu.lst look fine, it's pointing to "root (hd0,2)". It's either the BIOS that can't find the MBR, or the MBR can't find Grub.When I looked at the disk with fdisk after the install, hda1 was still marked bootable, hda3 was not, so I swapped bootable flags but that has not made a difference. I also appended the new grub to the old grub thinking I could get the MBR (if it is there) to load the old grub and thence find the new Centos, but that didn't work either.Mobo is an old Shuttle AK35.Any ideas? Did I mess up by not telling the system to put the MBR on /dev/hda3? Is there a way to fix this without reinstalling?
Ive installed centos freebsd and mandriva but i want to manage grub from my centos and y create successfully a boot load for freebds. But for mandriva it just doesnt work... so how can a create a boot load entry for mandriva from grub centos?

I need to increase the size of the Windows 7 partition (c:windowswinsxs seems to be something not easily remedied).
GParted didn't work in moving things around (bad sector) so I wiped out its partition (# 2 out of 3) and I was able to increase the size of the Windows 7 partition (I can reinstall CentOS easily and not much work lost).
Except ... no more grub menu (unsurprising). This incantation does allow me to boot into Windows 7.
Is there any way of rebuilding the grub menu short of reinstalling CentOS (5.5)?
I'm building kickstart files for my various machines.On my xen virtualization servers, I'm trying to get dom0_mem=512M added to the grub kernel line. Unfortunately, the bootloader --append option gets added to the linux kernel line, not the xen kernel line, which doesn't have the desired effect.Is there another way to put this into the kickstart file or should I use sed to put it into grub.conf in my post install section?

I ran yast2 bootloader then clicked on bootloader options, then the checkbox for using a password, and then typed in my password twice. It isn't working. I've tried various different passwords to see if something was throwing it off like special characters or too many characters but no matter what I do I can't use the password to unlock the bootloader on bootup. It just tells me that I entered the incorrect password.
View 8 Replies View Relatedpulled up an old clunker and put centos 5.4 on it the other day. well the grub spash screen appears but i have to manually hit enter to select a kernel.at the /boot/grub/grub.conf file and timeout=5. this is a new install. so I tried changing that value to 0 and it does boot the kernel immediately but never displays the splash screen. so something is not right I assume. btw I see a message (loading stage 2) for about 20 seconds as the computer boots and I have never seen that message on my ubuntu machine, so I wonder if something is off there.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have an issue after the installation of debian 8.2 on an usb flash drive:
I had debian 8.2 and windows 8.1 running on a single SSD. Everything was fine. I wanted to install a second debian on a 32gb USB flash drive as a live system. After the installation I am not able to boot my debian (SSD) without the flash drive plugged in. I only get a grub rescue prompt. Booting windows still works. It is also possible to boot both debian systems if the USB drive is plugged in.
So it seems to me, that the debian bootloader was accidently installed to the USB flash drive and the original bootloader on the SSD does not work properly anymore. I used a netinst image from a second USB flash drive to install debian to the first USB flash drive.

I just installed 5.6 using the x86_64 netinstall - all appeared to go well, albeit a little slowly. At the end of the install i rebooted the machine but CentOS won't load. If I select the CentOS option from grub (only other option is 'other') the machine instantly reboots.
Only options selected for install where 'server' and 'server gui'.
Editing the CentOS options shows the following but I've no idea whether this is correct or not (assume it is):

I am busy to do some tests using the Adaptec 1430sa hardware raid controler .I started the setup by generating the raid 1 aray and it worked ok .I did the regular setup of Cent Os 5.5 64 bits all worked ok but the system do not boot .When I start the box it enter the minimal grub screen .I tried to install a first time on the MBR like suggested and how it need to be done for soft raid setup .nd I tried to install it on the first cluster from the boot sequence like possible on second choice

View 10 Replies View RelatedI installed CentOS 5.5 last night using the DVD ISO (from a USB drive thanks to the Universal USB Installer). I selected the Server and Virtualization packages, and finished the install all the way through. At the end, the installer asked me to remove any installation media and reboot the system. After rebooting, the system hangs on a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner that does not accept text. This is before the GRUB screen appears. For partitioning, I created a 4GB swap partition on sdb and a 16GB ext3 partition on sda, mounted at /, with the remaining free space on sdb mounted at /storage.
Does anyone know why this system is hanging before the GRUB menu?
The first server I installed installed fine. The second server, installed with the same config, went to "kernel panic not syncing no init found try passing init= option in kernel" error. I tried reinstalling but it keeps going to that error after install reboot. The storage is ISCSI connected via Intel Server Adapter, which allows it to boot from ISCSI. Not sure if that's the cause for the problem, but the first server is connected to the same ISCSI and installed just fine.
Is there a way that I can make sure ISCSI module installs during installation? Although I think it is installed since it's able to copy the files and setup /dev/sda. I just wana make sure that it installs during setup.
I have tried to install debian 5.0 and 4.0 without any luck. I have both tried virt-manager and virt-install with both debian-501-i386-netinst.iso, and full dvd. I't always gives me the same error:Starting install.Could not find an installable distribution at '/xen/debian-501-i386-netinst.iso'

i didnt find a solution to a display problem im having. my server mobo is an asus k8n-dre with built in video. after the install(using built in video) the screen dosnt display fully as in black sections on the left and top of the screen. from the searching i did i found something about an "xrandr" command that would let me change the video settings but it didnt do anything with the black areas when i tried it. i also have a nvidia geforce 9500gt video card so i changed the jumper to boot from it and tried again. the black sections are still there but the centos display covers much more of the screen now. theres still about a third of an inch gap on the left hand side and about 1/4 of an inch on the top. ive also tried updating the software to see if it may be a driver issue but no luck. anyone know how or if it can fit to full sceen? the screen displays up to 1440x900 if im not mistaken but with the built in video it gave me lots of display options including the 1440x900. after changing to the nvidia card it only shows 800x600 and 640x480.

The default install was selected, and I think that it checks for sufficient available disk space before installing. Still, it ran for quite a while before announcing that it was out of disk space.The Installation Guide is not very helpful, since there is a blank page where the disk space requirement is supposed to be. I just picked the default installation. A search of the forums on "not enough disk space" did not return much.

I am trying to do a basic install of CentOS 5.4 on my embedded computer. It is a Linutop 2 system with a AMD Geode 800MHz CPU and 512Mb Ram. Have installed an IBM 40Gb 2.5" HD for OS storage. I am doing the install procedure in text mode. Everything goes as planned until I get to the package selection.
1. Booting from (i386) DVD with "linux text" parameter.
2. Skipping media check.
3. Selecting "English" install language.
4. Selecting "DK-latin1" as keyboard layout.

I've been trying for the past week to install an icecast server on my centos 5 VPS hosted through phurix.
I've tried compiling it, installing it from RPM. but im getting nowhere. Has anybody had any luck installing it, who wouldn't mind explaining how they went about it?
I've searched google for hours on end and all I can come up with is generic cent os 4 guides that just wont work. Im not the best when in comes to linux. I do a great job of copying and pasting to a shell prompt and can use ftp etc.

How do I know what sound system my Centos 5.5 install is using and how would I configure which soundcard output to use? I want to use the digital coax output from my M-Audio PCI soundcard, which appears to be detected and loaded. When I launch MPD, it autodetects an alsa sound system, but programs like alsamixer don't exist and I can't hear any sound out of the digital coax output. I haven't checked the 3.5mm stereo out yet.A little confused as to which documentation to be looking at at this point.

Everything else seems to be working (telnet to 110), and I turned off the firewall entirely, but I still cannot telnet to port 25. I also get a blank error within squirrelmail when attempting to send mail out (ERROR:Message not sent. Server replied: ). I apologize for not going directly to the qmailrocks forum, but they are currently closed down (due to lack of funds). I also am a newbie, so I apologize for the lack of needed information. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know what information you would need.
I have an i5 Thinkpad running Windows 7 64-bit. VT is enabled in the BIOS. I have installed vmware server v 2.0.2 but am unable to install Centos 5.5 x86_64 as a guest OS. As a test, I downloaded the first of 7 iso files for the 32-bit version of Centos 5.5 and pointed the CD/DVD drive to that iso. In that case, the installation starts as expected. I would really like to get the 64-bit version installed and running.
