CentOS 5 :: Burned Netinstall CD Caught In Endless Loop

Jan 5, 2010

I have burned the centos 5.4 i386 netinstall CD. It boots fine, but when I specify what mirror I want to use to install from, it gets caught in an endless loop. i have tried multiple mirrors and even tried both HTTP and FTP.
When I CTRL+F3 this is what I see:
"INFO: transferring [URL] to a fd"
ERROR: cannot determine address family of dist1.800hosting.com"
And then it just repeats over and over. I have looked at several mirros and I don't see that updates.img present at any of them.

Ubuntu :: USB Boot Caught In Loop When Loading PXE?

Jan 22, 2011

I am having issues loading Ubuntu 10.10 from USB. I have a HP Compaq nx9110 laptop, p4 3.2 512ram etc with a dead hard drive. I would buy a new HDD but i cant really vouch spending $80Aus on a IDE 2.5 just to play with linux. Anyhow it seems to read the USB stick which was created following the directions on this site but when it attempts to load the Realtec LAN (i think) it seems to get stuck in a loop. I have attached a screen print of what i see, it hangs for a few seconds then starts over with the same writing. Anyone know what that means or how i can fix this so i can try 10.10?

Ubuntu :: Caught In Login Screen Loop - Karmic 9.10

Mar 16, 2010

I have a real issue and need urgent help. I am stuck in a login loop and have looked in several threads in order to find a solution for my issue. I am relatively new to Ubuntu/Linux and do not really know my way around especially when it comes to command prompt. Thus I need someone with patience and who can guide me step by step in order to get to the bottom of the issue and to fix it.

The issue started all of a sudden, no particular reason. I only uninstalled evolution before and then rebooted. The shutting down process got stuck forever and I turn off the PC by holding the power button. Then I attempted to start, the PC boots to the login screen and I select my name and enter the correct password as usual. Then the screen changes for a split of a second to the back command screen and I can see the word crypto or so. Then the screen returns to the login screen and this loops.

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba & SSH Endless Password Loop

Prior to Karmic I had samba working well. Karmic upgrade broke samba with an endless password loop when trying to connect to a samba server. I have not been able to get it working since, including after upgrade to Lucid. I've now encountered a similar problem attempting to login into an SSH server. Laptop to desktop, (Karmic to Lucid),ssh ok, reverse no joy. (sshd running on both).

Ubuntu :: 10.04.2 LTS Alternate Installer Endless Loop On Disc Label

May 12, 2011

I'm trying to install 10.04.2 on a Dell machine with no current OS. I finally found the thread that said to use the alternate installer if you have a RAID: so i'm using ubuntu-10.04.2-alternate-i386.iso, burned using Roxio on my (different) windows box.

I go through the early installer steps ok, get to partitioning, choose guided resize (potential tangent: first time this modified partitions #6 and #7, second time it was just "use entire disk"). Then "installing base system", then a dialog that says: Please insert the disk labeled "Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS _Lucid Lynx_ - release i386 (20110211.d) in '/cdrom/' and press enterWell, the disk is already in the drive, and the installer has previously claimed it's reading from /cdrom. Reinserting it doesn't change anything. My only choices are <Continue> or <Go Back>, both of which display the same message. So i can't get past this, or escape, or do anything other than power down.

Looking at the disk on my Win machine, it appears to be labeled "Ubuntu 10.04.2 L" (can't tell if that's truncated or not).

Does the installer really demand a certain label on the disc to succeed?? how to successfully install in this situation?

Update: just to be sure, i checked the md5sum, and it's correct.

Hardware :: Endless Loop Giving Error While Trying To Image Disk

May 11, 2011

recently my HP Pavilion's Western Digital (WD2500JS) HDD has begun failing (bluescreens, slow, etc...). I was able to attach it to another computer using a IDE to USB adapter and save my personal files (pics, music, etc...), so the drive has not yet completely died. So I bought a SATA Seagate Barracuda 500GB HDD and wanted to use my restore discs that HP made me purchase off of them to reinstall my Windows Vista Home Premium Edition, which OF COURSE didn't work. So after researching a bit I found the best idea would be to make and Image copy of the original HDD and put it on the new one. So I tried using Clonezilla which ran in an endless loop giving error after error for hours while trying to image the disk. Fortunately my work has a ImageMASSter 4004i which is a piece of hardware that does a direct, drive to drive image from the Master drive to the destination drive.

But unfortunately this didn't work either. It was telling me that their was an error within the destination drive, something like "0x84 URMWT Sequencer failed to complete". Does the drive need to be completely empty?Should I reformat it before I try this (if so which FS?)? I plugged it into my laptop with USB to SATA adapter and was unable to mount it (this was after I had it in the Imaging Hardware Device, not sure if that could have screwed something up). The strange thing is that the last couple of days the new drive did work, I was using it for temporary storage of some files.

Ubuntu :: X11 Screen Locks Up In Endless "Starting File Manager" Loop

Jun 7, 2011

I have a generic PC (VIA chipset, AMD 1.8 GHz, old NVIDIA card, etc) running Ubuntu 10.04 side-by-side with a Windows XP box. The Ubuntu box can see and mount some of the Windows disks via SAMBA. Recently, I had a little hardware problems with the Ubuntu box but cleaned the fans and reseated cards and things seemed better. Today the Ubuntu box rebooted and when it came back up I could log in OK but then the X11 GUI locked up in a continuous "Starting File Manager" loop. If I click anything the taskbars go away showing only a blank wallpaper screen then the taskbars return but but will recycle if I click on anything. I can reboot in recovery mode and have applied all updates from that screen. The underlying Linux seems to be fine. I can CTRL+ALT+F1 and get a terminal screen that works fine.

CentOS 5 :: Debian Netinstall Long Done, CentOS 5 Still Trying To Retrieve Stage2.img?

Apr 2, 2009

I am trying to install 5.3 using net install disc, where it hangs for over 30 minutes trying to retrieve stage2.img. Second time. After first time and waiting over 25 minutes, I tried Debian net install on another box, and it's done with installation long ago, while this one is still hanging (and from the looks of it I doubt it will continue).

1. Network is good, the box pings, network parameters are good, Debian worked flawlessly with same parameters

2. It did pull all it needed before stage2.img

3. Plenty of RAM in the box, over 3 GB

4. The box needs no additional drivers (except newer version of kernel as vanilla still doesn't have a complete support for Intel DP43TF board), distro has them all

CentOS 5 :: Difference Between The Boot.iso And Netinstall.iso Images?

May 1, 2009

What is the difference between the boot.iso and netinstall.iso images? I've looked at the wiki and done some Googling, but haven't found a good answer yet. I know it is probably going to be something obvious, but in the context of installing a Xen fully virtualised guest there doesn't seem to be much difference. After booting both ask for the location of the install tree and proceed happily.

My ISP has a bad habit of killing nearly all sustained FTP transfers (reset packet to my router and the remote host) and I need to install CentOS 5.5 on an older pc that doesn't have a DVD drive. My solution would be to (temporarily) turn on IIS on my laptop and extract the contents of the DVD to the ftp dir, but do I simply just drop everything in there with the same directory structure as the DVD or is there a particular way I should set up the directories?

CentOS 5 Server :: NFS Mount Of Loop Mounted ISO's Showing No Files

Jul 16, 2009

I'm having a problem accessing files via nfs where an iso has been mounted through the loop device on the nfs server. Basically what I am attempting to do is access the 6 CentOS 5.2 ISO's via NFS from one of my client machines. The client is able to mount the share and see its sub directories leading up to the mount point of the ISO, but the contents of the mounted ISO image are simply not visible (on the client, they are visible on the server).

Server config (CentOS 5):

/etc/fstab:
/home/user/iso/CentOS-5.2-x86_64-bin-1of7.iso /exportiso/centos/x64/5.2/disc1 iso9660 defaults,loop 0 0

[code].....

NFS is working correctly for other mounts between these two boxes, however.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Samba Password Infinate Loop From Windows

Nov 12, 2009

I have just started a job as an IT tech, and have inherited a linux server running CEntOS 5.3 -- I have some experiance with linux, but am a little at sea. I'm using Webmin 1.490.The main use of the server is to samba share file space to windows clients, running XP.Everyone can happily connect to their home share, however the other shares have problems. One of the shares "staff" fails intermittently (to some staff members) and some of the other shares fail always.

The failure is that when a user tries to connect to the share, it pops up a username and password dialog (even if they just successfully viewed their home dir) then on entering correct details and clicking ok, the box refreshes with <domain><user name> (where braced values are replaced by literal values). If a user is connecting from outside via vpn (hosted though a different department's server) the domain is replaced by their computer name.If the password is re-entered, the same happens, in an infinite loop, and no access is ever given. When I say the staff share is intermittent, there likely is some pattern, but I haven't been able to work it out yet -- I think it may have something to do with how recently the account was set up, or physical location.

Ubuntu :: Mouse Caught In Firefox Even Alt-tab Doesn't Work?

Oct 31, 2010

When I start firefox the mouse seems captured by it.I can use the mouse inside the firefox screen (change tabs, use menu, select/paste) but not anywhere else. Even if a popup appears (site wants to register a cookie) then I can only use the keyboard to "ok" it. alt-tab to another window is not possible.Using the mouse in the gome-panel won't work.I can get the mouse pointer anywhere on the screen but mouse clicks don't seem to register. I've had this problem before on 10.04 and the only thing that worked then was to create a new useraccount (a lot of hassle).

edit: The window manager also won't react to the mouse so closing the firefox window is not possible using the windowmanager buttons(X - 0)It's also not limited to Firefox, after I closed firefox via it's menu and then started a gnome-terminal the mouse was caught in that. After closing the gnome-terminal and restarting firefox it degraded even further in that the mouse would'nt even work in the window itself anymore.Only a reboor would reset the problem.

Software :: Rtorrent 0.7.9 On Fedora - Caught Segmentation Fault

Dec 30, 2008

Due certain torrent sites I'm visiting I was forced to upgrade to rtorrent 0.7.9, which isn't avaiable through F8 repositories so I had to compile it myself. It went fairly smooth and I've been using it now for couple of months with no problems whatsoever.

However, recently, it started crashing on me, at the start, throwing out following message:

Caught Segmentation fault, dumping stack:
Stack dump not enabled.
Aborted

I have no clue what this is. I can assure you that I haven't altered anything on my system after I compiled the client.

Eventually, I am able to start the program, after an x-amount of tries.

I even tried to delete my session directory once. It seems to have helped at one occasion, but several days later, I was in the same trouble.

Fedora :: Songbird Repeats Every Second Song Endless?

Jun 24, 2010

I got a problem with my Songbird (1.4.3) on a Fedora 12 64 bit. When I play music and the first song is over, the song changes but the little loudspeaker symbol in the list, that displays the currently playing song, doesn't move to this song. It just stays on the first played one and also the title of the first one is displayed above the progress bar. But that's not all, when the song should change again (from second to third song), it won't do so. The second played song starts again and will be repeated again and again and Meanwhile the mentioned symbol just stays in front of the first song. Only if I press the "next" button two times the third song will be played. So I got to press "next" two times after every two songs. That makes listening to music nearly impossible. The problem occurred after installing a lot of updates (I had no fast internet connection for months so I now had to install all at once), so it is difficult to say which package causes the issue. Before that Songbird worked all fine for months. I would be glad to provide further information, but neither running songbird in terminal, nor the songbird error console shows up any error related to this behaviour. I also tried to delete the .songbird2 folder in my userhome, but it made no difference at all. Normally i would get the latest verion of the software at first, but since songbird dropped linux support, there is no newer linux version than the one installed on my system.

General :: Recovering Files On External Disk Caught In OS Installation

May 10, 2011

I was installing Ubuntu to the internal disk in my main machine, with all external drives unplugged for safety - then discovered I had accidentally chosen the external drive and it wasn't unplugged. (Seeing three drives not two listed as installation targets should have tipped me off, but I guess my IQ was low that day.)The external drive, in compliance with Murphy's Law, was my backup drive with all vital current files. The last few months of work gone. Now the drive shows only the stuff I normally expect in / on any Linux machine. It mounts showing as ext4, but the disk was (I'm 98.5% sure) originally ext3.However, the installation did not finish.Whatever files got copied, clobbered only a fraction of the disk. df reports only 1% of the space used.Maybe the bulk of my valuable files are okay, and could be recovered with some tool?

There are other questions on this site about file recovery, but many are for Microsoft Windows, or for malfunctioning disks, or some other situation. I'm on Linux with a physically healthy external disk. I'm fairly sure that the more recent and more important files are in multiple copies on that disk, so if one copy is clobbered there's hope to get the second copy.
