CentOS 5 :: Remote Shutdown Server Through Power Switch?

I have built a Centos 5.3 server for a friend of mine that is being used as a NAS server. The server has 4 1TB drives in a RAID 5 configuration and a dedicated non raid system drive for the OS. My friend isnt very Linux literate so I need this bow to be relatively simple. I have worked most of it out but have a question with regards to remote reboot.
I need to be able to shut this device down through the power switch without human intervention (at the moment when the power switch is pushed the server asks to confirm shutdown) the server wont have a Monitor connected so this isn't practical. Is it possible to use the power switch to do an clean, immediate shutdown?
The other option is shutdown through a web page is this something that has been done before? I know he can do it through terminal by issuing a shutdown now command but as I said this guy wants something simple. I don't really want to explain everytime he needs to shut the Server down how to do it if he can just do it via a website or even with the power button.

This OS is has been cloned from the drive of another computer. The motherboard is now an SIS730. I assume the hardware is sufficiently different to prevent the OS from shutting down the computer.How do I fix this? ---without installing, if possible.

If I do a "shutdown -rF now" on a server, it will force all volumes to be checked as it reboots.
My question is, which i can't figure out from reading the man pages for e2fsck and shutdown, is what switches does it use when it automatically runs an e2fsck on each volume? i'm assuming a -y since it never prompts, but what else? is it physically checking the entire disk for bad blocks, etc etc?

I built a home server (NAS/WWW/SSH/media server etc) and chose CentOS 5 as the OS (stability, easy of configuration).I was just about to start tuning the power consumption when I realised that the kernel CentOS uses is so "old" that it does not support the latest reduced power consumption enhancements that Linux has achieved in big strides in the recent past (we are probably still talking 6-12+ months ago e.g. tickless kernel)..
So my questions; 1) I know CentOS was maybe not meant for home servers (certainly its not its primary purpose), but if it is, any ideas of what kind of power consumption it takes (I know its relative) and if there are particular power consumptions that are worthwhile?
2) Do you recommend me compiling my own 2.6.21+ kernel from kernel.org or am I just likely to have compatibility issues (I really did not want to do that) or when is CentOS 5.4 supposed to have a newer 2.6.21+ version kernel?
Was it wrong of me in principle to choose CentOS for a home server when I am power conscious? (I don't have a low-power VIA processor either but a P4 so I am really just hoping to make do with software changes).

This is most likely a Vista config thing, but basically I'm using "net rpc SHUTDOWN -f 192.168.xxx.xxx -U username%password" to remotely shutdown both XP and Vista machines.
The XP machines shutdown fine. They have the same local user account names and passwords as the Vista machines. The Vista machines repond with NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE.
I've checked (way too many times) that my usernames and passwords are correct, Ive disabled the Windows Firewall in Vista, and I've been googling for two days and can't really remember all the other things I've tried.I'm sure it's probably some kind of security thing in Vista, but I barely ever use Vista and don't know where to go from here.

I had a power failure the other day and my server shutdown abruptly. After bringing the server up I noticed that the /var partition came up as read only. I was not able to edit the crontab, not able to write to files within /var/log/ and do other write operations within /var.
I did a mount and it showed that /var was mounted read and write but when trying to run certain operations the system was still saying that it was read only.

I use centro 5 to run a game server with the command ./srcds_run quit -game cstrike -nocrashdialog +map de_dust2 +maxplayers 36 +ip 95.154.192.34 +port 27015 -tickrate 67
which then starts a 36 slot CSS game server but as soon as i close putty it ends now i tried nohub ./srcds_run quit -game cstrike -nocrashdialog +map de_dust2 +maxplayers 36 +ip 95.154.192.34 +port 27015 -tickrate 67 and ./srcds_run quit -game cstrike -nocrashdialog +map de_dust2 +maxplayers 36 +ip 95.154.192.34 +port 27015 -tickrate 67 > srcds.log 2>&1 &

Before to describe my problem I want to say that I searched a lot on the internet and I think I tried all the solutions provided by other users to similar problems.
I've got an IBM xSeries 346 server running CentOS 5.5 with all updates applied with yum.
The video card is an ATI Radeon (lspci says: 01:06.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE]).
Everything worked fine until a bad day where there was an environmental power failure and the server crashed.
I turned it on, I manually check the file system, some files went lost and after the reboot the X server didn't start.
After the first boot I had problem with /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit, sbin/multipath.static and /dev/cpu/microcode, I solved them and now the message it shows is:
"Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface) It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?"
I choose OK and it appears an empty log, if I go in /var/log/gdm and I do an ls -al:

I press enter on the OK that appears at the bottom of the screen and it says: Would you like to try to configure the X server?
I choose Yes, I enter the root password and appears the following messages:
Couldn't start X server on card 0
Couldn't start X server with old config, trying with a fresh configuration
Then another messages:
Trying to restart the X server, I press enter on OK and it loops the initial message ("Failed to start the X server...)

2 times now our server has randomly shut down. Completely powered off as if the power cable was pulled or something. Both around the same time. 7:30ish. Once was on Friday June 5th, then last night, Wednesday June 10th.

I'm currently in the last steps of migrating a CentOS mailserver to the x64 version.However, under the old 32 bit version, I was using XRDP to access the Centos box from my Windows boxes.However I can't seem to find the XRDP package in the standard repos so this is prompting me to look at possible alternatives (XRDP was incompatible with my windows 7 box anyway soI had to RDP to another server of ours running 2003 to RDP into the mailserver which was far from ideal).Basically, I'd like to be able to seamlessly access the Centos box with a standard RDP client.
I know VNC Server/Clients would be an option but RDP gives me the freedom of any windows box being able to access the server on the same adress/port without installing software on any windows box I encounter.Are there any viable alternatives to XRDP ?There's no "add-on" to VNC server that could enable it to accept RDP connections ?

On a couple of Linux laptops I have the built in screen never turns off it's backlight, regardless if a 'black screen' sort of screen saver is activated (this both for a laptop running an X-based desktop as well as for a laptop only having a text console) or if I even close the lid of the laptop (looking carefully in the dark, I can tell that the screen still has the backlight on, even if the laptop "know" it is closed).
This is a bad thing for a couple of reasons:
It wastes power
It generates heat which when the laptop lid is closed increases the cooling need (the fan goes on more often etc).
Backlights have limited lifetime like all electric components and IIRC, the less a backlight is turned on, the longer it will last. So, what is the best approach (considering a Gentoo with a 2.6.36 kernel) to remedy this? I recon that there probably are two approaches:
One for text-only laptops which never displays a desktop, e.g a laptop sitting there acting like a firewall or server
one for those running a Gnome/KDE/XFCE desktop (and a SLIM or GDM display manager).
The laptops I have in mind is a Dell Latitude CPi (built 1999, yes, it is from another millenea), a Compaq Armada M700 (built 2001) and a Dell Latitude D630. If this can be accomplished only by configuring things in the Linux OS (be it kernel setup or editing config files) without touching anything in BIOS, that would of course be preferable.

I Have been "dual" booting two O/S's independently on two hard drives, and it has worked perfectly although a bit of a chore having to go into BIOS to select the other drive if I wanted to swap. I do it this way as it stops all the headaches with the MBR or GRUB, and doing updates and re-installs are completely clean and hassle free(what % can claim this in a regular multi-boot?) I have at last found a power switch to make the whole process even easier, its a simple 3 pole switch that slots into the front panel,searched the net for weeks as I knew they existed but only in the USA or Taiwan, managed to track one done in France,I thought I would share this information as I think it gives a simple solution to a what can be a very complex and frustrating problem![URL]...

I've been using Ubuntu on and off since 8.04, but only last week decided to make a real switch across to it.After installing 9.10 64bit though, my laptop while running Ubuntu just turns itself off at completely random times - it doesn't seem to go through any shut down procedure or anything, it's more like the power's just suddenly cut. It sometimes happens 5 minutes after being turned on, or sometimes 4 or 5 hours, it really is random.I really have no idea where to even begin trying to stop this. I think it must be a software thing because this has never happened with windows or earlier versions of Ubuntu, but other than that I don't know what to do to stop this.I'm dual booting Windows 7 32bit and Ubuntu 9.10 64bit, and this is on a Toshiba L350-D 11-D laptop, which has a 64bit AMD processor.

I have a PCChips M830 version 5 motherboard with AMD Duron 666mhz cpu and 786mb DDR ram. I installed Mythdora 12.23 for playing videos on my tv and music on my stereo. Eventually I hope to get DSL out in the sticks where I live and can then stream movies from Netflix. I did not install MythTV. The installation went fine and I had no errors. I've done a lot getting it ready and it is stable. The problem I'm having is it will not power down. When I click "Shut Down" and then press F1 I can see the shutdown procedure and all looks fine until it gets to "Power Down".
At which time it freezes and I have to flip the power switch on the power supply for it to power down. If I open a terminal and do "su root" and use "shutdown -h now" it exhibits the same behaviour. I've looked through the bios settings several times paying close attention to the "Power Management" section and have not seen anything relating to this. Doesn't seem like a big problem I know, but it keeps me from booting the machine from LAN since the ethernet card WOL settings are lost when powering down with the power supply switch.

I would like a program that will auto shutdown my Linux machine when it detects low power or X amount of minutes remaining on UPS. I don't have NIC's in my UPS's so that's why I am asking... Not even sure it is possible for the Linux machine to detect when it switches to AUX power.

I've recently installed phpmyadmin but cant access from [URL] I checked the files and found only 3 folders in /var/lib/phpmyadmin -config / save / upload - all of them empty. Whenever I try intstall phpmyadmin again it just says its already installed and up to day.

I found an application AUTO POWER ON & SHUTDOWN in windows which is really very useful to those who have night unlimited broadband connection. I searched for similar application in UBUNTU as I am slowly shifting to UBUNTU from 10.04 (maveric) version. Whenever I search for application or for other options, so many have written failed attempts only.

I have a small problem on my Compaq Evo Centos 5.4 web server. The web server runs just fine, the problem is it fails to restart from a power outage. Simple edit the BIOS. No! For a reason I can't think of the keyboard stops working after a few key strokes following the F10 to enter BIOS setup. Then its a power cycle. If left to BOOT the PC and keyboard are fine. After hearing about viruses which get to the BIOS I will ask can NIX get that far so I can adjust the Power ON?

for some reason, my opensuse 11.2 can not shut down as normal. by pressing ctrl-alt-F1 and issuing "init 0", the console displays the following messages and then stops there. Segmentation fault Master Resource control: runlevel 0 has been reached skipped services in runlevel 0: SuSEfirewall2_setup I have to push power button to shut down it.

I just did a clean reinstall of Ubuntu (10.04 --> 10.10). After the install, any time I do CPU intensive work, my PC is suddenly shutting down like it's overheating. Everything was working fine for months, and started having problems immediately after the reinstall. so this is not a problem with my hardware, and it's not a problem with my fans needing cleaning -- it's a problem with software. So please don't tell me "that sounds like overheating, clean your fans". Something is different in software-land between 10.04 and 10.10 that is causing this to happen.
I have checked my log files, and can't find anything related to overheating -- searches for things related to lm_sensors, "temp", and "thermal" are not turning up anything in the system logs (syslog, kern.log, or messages). I also looked at the logs around the times of the sudden shutdown, and couldn't find anything unusual. How can I diagnose this? I'd like to file a bug report, but since I can't find anything in the logs, I honestly have no idea how to go about providing useful information. Is there anything besides overheating that might be causing my laptop to suddenly shut off? (I am using a Gateway M-6888u laptop, btw)
