I am new to do this. It is my first CentOS install. I burned the 6 ISO's from the site and installed onto a Dell Dimension 8200. At the very end of the graphical install (CD 6, 2 minutes left) it freezes. There is no error message, but the file it freezes on is: Installing Gnome-applet-vm-0.1.2-1.el5 i386 (113KB).
View 1 RepliesI have two boxes that were originally used as workstations at a school - they upgraded and sold these.The two boxes are identical parts - Lenovo NetVista M42. I installed 5.3, installed RPMforge per the wiki instructions, did a yum -y update && shutdown -h now.The next day I turned the machine on and installed the UT2004 dedicated server. After a few hours I tried logging in via SSH - I could enter my user and password, but could not get farther. I rebooted the server. After another day the same thing happened. I moved the disk from the first box to the second and moved /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0.bak to ifcfg-eth0 but retaining the correct MAC address.
During this transition where the server "locks up" some things work and others do not. For example, if I type ping 4.2.2.2, wait 10 minutes and CTRL+C it looks like this (note the time of 0ms).
I'm running VNC Server on CentOS5 on a brand new installation, this is for some of my students to use specific software via VNC on their machines from home that they otherwise don't have access to on their Windows machines. This has been working fine on our previous server for a few years but the hardware is now outdated so I have upgraded and put a fresh install of CentOS 5 on. This works fine for about 24 hours and then eventually one of the session ends up freezing where the user then can see everything on their session, the cursor can move but they cant click a single thing.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWe are having a cluster with couple of disk servers, compute nodes and a head node. Disk server is nfs mounted on all the compute and head nodes.
The problem is that if any of the disk servers hangs, it freezes rest of the cluster too which is dangerous. Ideally, cluster should not care about the hanged server and run without any problem except files from that server is not visible.
Is there any way I could avoid the problem of freezing cluster because of one hanged server?
if I choose Administration --> Printing and then try to select a printer from the list of available printers (to delete a printer for example), the dialog
freezes and needs to be terminated forcibly. It seems like I can hit "New Printer" and add a printer without anything freezing. All of the printers on the list are
network printers.
Possibly related- if I use evince to view and document and then attempt to print by going File --> Print, it gives me a printer selection box which also freezes if I try to choose a printer from the list.

I used yum 5 days ago when I installed mplayer and some dependencies. And now I manage to use Yum and it is not working, I cant find out what is happening but yum loads the plugins and then freezes and is no reaction to ctrl-c or something to stop it so I am have to kill it dna finally got no result from any update processes. Also I manage to clean cache or even to run yum. I checked the logs and it writes nothing about this ,neither an error or something to make me understand whats happening. Tried to install with rpm but the same thing happens. It just freezes...

situation:
1 server with centos 5.4 running 1 client with centos 5.4 - gnome running thin ethernet network
on my client desktop i have a link to a shared folder on the server. this works fine.
to the problem: after working with this (using the link and seeing it working) i shutted down the server from my client (in a terminal screen, using ssh) the terminal screen signalled the server going down and the connection ended. the linked folder on the client desktop changed its icon fine.
after that i clicked on the changed icon (of the link that was not a working link any more) and the client machine froze.... no reaction any more. i could only end the session by >ctrl-alt-f#< , log in and shutdown.
Q: is it normal Centos is that angry when you click such a link?
I have problems with my laptop which runs well until it decides to freeze and it either shuts down or I have to turn it off. After I restart the system there is no hdd check to signal that something really wrong happened. I suspect the nVidia driver for the Quadro FX 770M video card is responsible but I am not sure. Also, firefox sometimes runs sluggish (maybe flash is causing something to overcharge?) and often times the computer freezes when I am using firefox. The funny thing is that all my heavy simulations are not causing problems and often times they use 10GB of swap with no complains. When the laptop freezes I see two keyboard lights flashing intermittently. How can I figure out what is going on? I mean are there any log files where I can look for something or can I setup a log procedure to detect the cause of this problem?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed centos 5.5 on a new system, details below. All worked fine for a couple of weeks, then the system froze up. No network access, no keyboard/mouse, blank screen. Had to reboot. Happened again about a week later. Then started happening every couple of days, then daily, and today it happened three times.
I see nothing unusual in any of the logs. The freezing does not seem to be correlated with any particular activity. Happened in both gnome and kde. While it's up, everything seems to work fine. I looked on the intel site for a new driver for this chipset but didn't find a linux version. I tried different versions of this same kernel (PAE, centosplus etc) but have not tried an older kernel.
I installed memtest86 (with yum) but when I try to start it from grub, the screen goes blank for a few seconds, then it reboots. Can't get it to start. Tried a bootable memtest86 cd that worked before (couple of years ago) and it wouldn't boot from it (bios is set to boot first from cd). Maybe this is a strong hint?
My next steps are to burn a new cd of memtest86 and try that. And/or to start removing ram to see if any of them are the culprit. In the meantime I'm asking if any of you have had similar problems with this architecture, or have other suggestions of things I could try. I don't have pieces of hardware lying around that I can easily swap in and out, unfortunately. If all this fails I'll try FC13. Any advice on whether or not you think that might fix the problem would be appreciated, before I go to the trouble.code...

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was trying to restart the X server with sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart, and doing so brought me to a black screen with some messages I don't remember, and left me hanging like that. So I had to do a hard reboot. So now when booting I get to the ubuntu logo on the purple background and it just hangs like that. Doesn't accept keyboard input, I can't alt+d or ctrl+alt+f2. I edited the ubuntu line in the grub menu and removed quiet but that didn't do anything. How do I diagnose this?

It hosts an Apache/2.2.3 web server. We also run apache-tomcat-5.5.23. Most of our programs are mod_perl. Sometimes our users input over-sized data sets, or queries that generate too much output. (I realize that we should try to prevent them from doing that, but right now I'm looking for a more general solution.)
When a large job runs it can 'freeze' our system. The system becomes unresponsive to everything, including command line commands. Sometimes it unfreezes after a while. Once, in this situation I was able to create a high-priority shell. ps reported:

Observing the machine, I see at least one very busy disk. I suspect that some high priority system process (perhaps kswapd) is using all the cpus, preventing anything else from running. Unfortunately, I cannot find much info on kswapd, or debuggging this problem.
and what is the diffrent. i now about the server only use command and desktop use both so. am trying to host some sites which one will you recomend.

I've tried stopping and starting Webmin via SSH, waiting a few hours before trying again, flushing the iptables configuration but all with no luck.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter yesterday system update the x server won't start up anymore. It locks immediately with blank screen leaving the computer unresponsible until hard reboot. I hat to once again go with the "vesa" driver, as I mentoined earlier in another thread it is a life saver, always works. My video card is integrated Radeon HD3250 - video driver was fglrx from ATI itself. "radeon" driver now reports that modesetting is not supported and will not load with EE-type X server error.
Anyone else experienced this? Are there any changes in the most recent X server that once again break compatibility with the official ATI driver?
I have a 11.1 NFS server and several 11.1 NFS clients. If for some reason the server shuts down before the clients then the clients become almost frozen, particularly KDE is rendered useless even after cycling back to init 3 then init 5. I would like to make the clients immune to shutdowns on the server.

View 2 Replies View RelatedFor some reason my disc I burned for ubuntu desktop 10.10 freezes when I get to the ubuntu logo with the 5 dots. I am able to install ubuntu server just fine.
I tried to install desktop on top of server using sudo aptitude install ubuntu-desktop and then whenever I reboot it freezes during startup.
I think it might be my swap partition. I recall seeing a blip of an error talking about "press C to skip or M to start maintenence" or something like that. It never stayed on the screen long enough for me to read it.

Hardware:
KM266 MB.
AMD Athlon XP2400 CPU
On board video
On board network
1 GB RAM (2 512 stcks)
2 - WD 80 GB PATA drives
Have done the following:
1. verified DVD
2. verified hard drives
3. Removed ATI rage based AGP video card.
4. removed soundcard
5. removed old belkin wireless
6. Cleared CMOS
Install procedure:
Clean install - remove all partions etc.
Setup RAID1 using both drives:
- /boot, swap, / (md0, md1, md2)
Default DHCP for network.
Install proceeds till 8 minutes left on install.
Freeze happens with Installing libgnome..... Only option is to power off and start over (which is getting a little old at this point).
I'm thinking of just doing a standard (NO RAID) install and to see if that works
I have two servers, both running CentOS, but one running Cpanel as the control panel and the other running Webmin.
I would like to sync the web folders using rsync. However, when I sync the files from the Cpanel host the permissions look as follows:

But that doesn't work on the Webmin server which needs the following:

It seems the Cpanel install has the group as 'nobody' whilst webmin has it the same as the file owner. I can fix this by running:

But as the file transfers will be frequent, I don't want the files to be inaccessible until chown is run.
So, what I really want to know is - how can I change things on the 'webmin' server so that files with ownership owner:nobody will run?
