Server :: Qmail Server On Redhalt 9 - SMTP Very Slow?

Apr 1, 2010

we have qmail server installed on rhl 9. it was working perfectly fine for last 1 year. suddenly it stopped accepting emails from internet. when i telnet on port 25 it takes about 90 secs to show the SMTP ready state.I have tried many things

1. stopped Reverse DNS Lookup by adding -H to qmail-smtpd/run file
2. stopped spamassing and AV
3. reverified DNS server settings in resolv.conf
4. dig is resolving dns query properly.

i also observed that when i do telnet to
telnet localhost 25 response is very quick

but when i do
telnet local_server_IP_address 25
it takes aprx 90 secs to show me SMTP ready messege.

can someone shed some light on this as what should i do next to rectify this problem..

Debian Configuration :: Usage Of SMTP With Temporarily Connected Network?

Jun 15, 2011

I'm currently running my own postfix server which is the MX for my domain. This is hosted in my house at the moment on the end of an ADSL line with a static IP. However, I'm trying to go totally mobile so I can kill the ADSL and the line rental and switch to 3G. Does anyone know a solution which allows me to accept (or ask for delivery) of SMTP when temporarily connected and queues it externally? Sort of like a hosted mail queue which pumps SMTP onto my laptop only when I ask it to.

CentOS 5 Server :: How To Tell Qmail To Start Up Automatically

Aug 15, 2010

I am still pretty green when it comes to centos and linux in general. I have installed rpm and source packages before with little trouble by following the guides available on the support site and wiki for centos.I am running centos 5.4 on a virtual server.I followed the guide for installing vpopmail at URL...mailSince this is a VPS server I cannot install gnome and is why I opted for vpopmail + qmail.

The first issue I have is: I don't know how to tell qmail to start up automatically because after the install of qmail from source as the guide told me to, it did not place a startup files in the /etc/init.d, and I can't find any useful documentation on how to trouble shoot that.I try to use "chkconfig qmail on" and "chkconfig --level 345 qmail on" but both give me the error "error reading information on service qmail: No such file or directory"The version of qmail I am using is the latest 1.0.3, and the version of vpopmail is 5.5.

Vpopmail seems to be working just fine, as is the mysqlauth mod. I check the vpopmail database in mysql, and all the values I used for the domain and user show up there. The settings also show in the qmail configuration directory files for the domain. My first clue as to something being wrong was that when I send an email to the address I setup, I get nothing delivered on the server, but I also do not get any bounce backs or errors to tell me the details of what went wrong. At first I figured it was my firewall, so I disabled iptables. That did not fix it.I also tried disabling SElinux. That also made no difference.

CentOS 5 :: SMTP Test Fails During Qmailrocks Install CentOS 5.5?

Oct 2, 2010

I am trying to run though the qmailrocks setup on a centos 5.5 and I am running into an issue when trying to telnet to port 25:

telnet localhost 25
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1).
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.

Everything else seems to be working (telnet to 110), and I turned off the firewall entirely, but I still cannot telnet to port 25. I also get a blank error within squirrelmail when attempting to send mail out (ERROR:Message not sent. Server replied: ). I apologize for not going directly to the qmailrocks forum, but they are currently closed down (due to lack of funds). I also am a newbie, so I apologize for the lack of needed information. I've spent around 15 hours trying to figure out how to do this and I keep either getting into things that I don't understand, or hitting brick walls (for instance, I found nullmailer, but after installing it, it seemed like it would only work on Unix) Is there an application like nullmailer which I can use as my MTA to forward all internal mail to a different SMTP?

CentOS 5 Server :: SMTP Spamfilter Centos5.5 Dcc - On Config ?

Mar 3, 2011

I am trying to see if a can get a centos 5.5 server setup as an smtp store and forward spamfilter by following the Centos Wiki and the freespamfilter.org guide by Mr88Talent at [url], which relates to another linux distro.

The spamfilter is essentially working! however, i have one issue with DCC.

test problem:

I'm not sure if anyone else would be interested in a Centos version of Mr88Talent's tutorial, but a very rough and completely untested first effort is available at the following url: [url]

Any opinions on this setup or just a total slating of everything i have done wrong would be welcome as i don't want to waste time trying to use a setup that is just not going to be practical or reliable to maintain / keep operational.

I have read that yum update can break this type of system - which concerns me.

The intended use of the spamfilter is for a small business (only about twenty e-mail accounts). However, they still need to reliably receive e-mails (hopefully with less spam though).

CentOS 5 :: Open Port For Secure Imap And Smtp ?

Apr 16, 2011

The server I'm running is virtually stock CentOS - it's running on a xen virtual host, started as CentOS 5.1 (32 bit) when that was fresh, it's at 5.5 now and updated nightly. All packages except postgresql and php are from CentOS and EPEL.

I'm running dovecot on it, and for long time, squirrelmail connecting via localhost was good enough. All external ports were firewalled by the CentOS firewall (just 25,80,443,custom ssh are currently open).

Now I need to allow an external imap client to connect.

I have generated ssl key and configured the dovecot configuration and it should be good to go, but gosh dangit, I can't remember how to open the port in the configuration.

I did it before when I set up ssh to run on a non standard port after I got sick of constant brute force attack on port 22, but I can't recall what I did and the various tutorials I find online all tell how to do it with the GUI tool, but I don't have any GUI stuff installed.

system-config-securitylevel-tui

Is I'm pretty sure what I used to open up my custom > 1024 ssh port, but I can't remember how I used it to open that port and it doesn't seem intuitive. Also, do I need to use 993? I'd almost rather use something custom above 1024, as long as thunderbird supports it (don't care about any other mail client)

Finally, my smtp server is postfix and port 25 is already open (but not an open relay, I check it about every 3 months). For requests to send mail from a client, I would really like some authentication of some type - as in only relays for IP addresses that have recently successfully logged in the secure imap port.

Networking :: CentOS Mail Setup - Sendmail Via External SMTP Server

Jul 30, 2011

I am setting up a CentOS box as a NAT firewall that needs to also send mail. It needs to send this mail using an outside provider's SMTP. The provider requires SMTP over SSL. None of the machines inside the NAT will ever send mail except via the provider's SMTP nor will they ever receive mail except to local clients via the provider's IMAP servers.

So for the example the machine is TESTMACHINE. There is one internet facing ethernet port connected to a DSL modem via pppoe.

The SMTP it needs to send mail via is mail.host.net which requires SMTP over SSL (port 465) and username/password authentication.

The sendmail documentation is quite confusing on how to get this simple setup operating, so an example showing the appropriate changes to sendmail.mc and other require config files.
