View 2 RepliesI have stumbled up around many problems in the past weeks, and recently my windows server is just giving me big pain with the DNS. Instead of having constant trouble trying to fix those problems that doesn't stop coming. I am trying to find the opportunity to transfer my settings onto a Linux setup. My needs are pretty simple, I am currently creating a simple website for a school project that I need to finish fairly soon. I also need to attach it to a forum, most likely phpBB3.
My first question would be: Which OS should I opt for. CentOS, SUSE, Ubuntu Server? Should I add in features into that to make my transfer simpler? Secondly, what would be the website manager, Apache or IIS? Is php easily compatible with the systems, or will it need configuration somehow? Finally, can it be possible for me to install programs that are exclusive to windows, such as Dreamweaver? I got a small knowledge on Linux systems, but I am completely new to the server side!
I have a small AMD Geode LX 800 (500 MHz) based Nettop that I would like to use at home as home server managing printers, a central data storage, and some other things. Only I can't install CentOS 5.5 due to an Anaconda exception at the very end of the initial setup process, right before it's supposed to start copying the files. Is it true that CentOS/RHEL requires an i686 compatible processor? As far as I know the Geode LX is only i586 and Redhat's system requirements only list x86 as necessary.

View 1 Replies View RelatedA client has sent me an RHEL 5.1 box for me to do some work on, but it's not registered with Red Hat. This is causing me problems, because it's a minimal installation, and I need some more dev software. My immediate reaction was to install various bits (emacs, and so on) from my Centos 5(.0) DVD.The base RHEL system only had one (disabled) repo entry,so I added a yum DVD repo entry in yum.conf.d.
This looked good to start with, but it doesn't work. Something in RHEL's pirut/yum/rpm/whatever is getting confused, and can't work out what is/isn't installed.
Question - how do you maintain an unregistered RHEL box? Has RH done something to make life difficult? Is my problem simply that I'm using a Centos 5.0 DVD, instead of Centos 5.1? Am I stuck with downloading lots of rpms from the net and doing everything manually? I really don't want to do that.
I am trying to download RHEL 5.4 AS version for testing..But under [URL] There is no specific link for AS version or ES version..How can I detect which iso is for AS and which one for ES..? View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a database server running RHEL 5.1 32 bit that suffered some catastrophic failures about 6 months ago. We were able to patch it back together and keep it running, but now the manufacturing site it supports is going to shut down for two weeks and I would like to replace it permenantly. Does anyone have any guidance for that sort of thing? I'd like to have the new server up and running before hand, basically changing the hostname/ip and restoring the databases only on conversion day. I've done this in the past with HP UX - Red Hat conversions, but this is my first red hat to red hat move. Any advice or shortcuts?I forgot to add the other wrinkle. The new server will be running 64bit linux.

View 1 Replies View RelatedEnvironment:RHEL 5.2 and 5.4 AP x86_64, 2 drives (sda, sdb), installing without optional features like clustering and virtualization. I have tried this for a couple of days now and just can't get it to work. My goal is to take the RHEL 5.2 DVD and RHEL 5.4 DVD and install them on separate drives of the same machine. I want the grub menu to give me a choice. I prefer to understand the steps and choices offered me by the install dialog to do this rather than fiddle with grub.conf. If that is not possible, I will write up the bug.
So far, I just get the the error 13 when trying to start the grub added second OS. I have read elsewhere that "Anaconda frequently recognizes the other operating system and sets up grub so you can boot from either operating system". That would be nice. The install dialog lets me choose a drive to install to. I have figured out that I need to check "review and modify partitioning layout" to enter the advanced grub choices. Do I have it install a boot loader for the 1st OS? Trying to add the 1st OS during the second OS install creates a grub conf with no kernel line in the added boot stanza.
My laptop has a WD400 scorpio IDE hard disk. I'm trying to figure out if it's DMA compatible or not. Taking the cover off there's no mention of DMA on the label. I've googled and get confusing results, at least to me. Is there a way I can figure out if it's DMA or not?

Do you have model suggestions?

One frustration I had with Blackberry was that I was not able synch my phone with my home computer (ubuntu) when I checked two years ago. Since then I have been using a windows machine to synch.
Now I am looking for a new phone and I would like it to work with my Ubuntu computer. I am wondering what other Ubuntu users experience are on this issue.
Can any one tell me of USB speakers they have found compatible with ubuntu 9.10 ?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am currently using [URL] to send and receive faxes at work. I need the faxes to be encrypted. They offer public key encryption with PGP 9.8.2 They just need my public key to be compatible with their PGP version. I found a few statements at the GPG site, which may not be true for newer versions of gpg: PGP, Inc. refuses to accept Elgamal keys of type 20 even for encryption. They only support type 16.PGP 5.x does not accept v4 signatures for data material but OpenPGP requests generation of v4 signatures for all kind of data, that's why GnuPG defaults to them. By default, GnuPG encrypts your secret key using the Blowfish symmetric algorithm. Older PGPs will only understand 3DES, CAST5, or IDEA symmetric algorithms. PGP doesn't do Elgamal signing keys at all, so they are not usable with any version. I attempt to avoid using trial and error here, because an incompatible key may provoke loss of crucial information. It is difficult to estimate how long it would take them/me to find out that the key provided was not compatible; but probably it would entail a significant loss for the business.
View 1 Replies View RelatedNobody else seems to be reporting this, so I guess it's down to my setup in some way, but when I run vim from a konsole window under KDE 4.3.3, I find that the konsole screen messes up during the session (feels as if it is writing with background colour on the background or something) and even when you leave vim by typing the right exit commands, display remains upset (most often confined to leftmost 20-30 columns). Konsole "clear and reset" does not help, I have to close the session and start a new instance.
Maybe connected to the konsole settings I use which are "black on light yellow"?
Should I have something in by .vimrc or konsole configuration to fix this ?
I just want to ask if samba3x (which is samba 3.3.8 specifically ) compatible with samba 5.2 (Final) ???. cause I plan to upgrade my samba which is currently samba 3.0.33 PDC w/ LDAP back-end.
