I'm trying to seup my dual ethernet card. One to go to the internet and the other to serve the LAN. Do I need a router for the NIC that will serving the LAN and another one to the NIC that will be connected to the internet? I don't want the LAN computers to connect to the internet. Can someone please give me a description on how to set this connection. And yes I will be using my server as a DHCP and DNS BIND.
View 5 RepliesI just started setting up a linux box in the office...I have some experience with ssh commands but not setting up a linux system and stuff.The box is connected to our network but I have no clue how to make windows & osx talk with it. How can I go by doing that and also setting up an apache server to be able to connect through network. Right now I have apache/linux/mysql running it works when i go to localhost, but I would also like to let all the computers in office to access it. I would guess that will deal with virtual host which I know how to setup. I just need to setup an IP.

Internet --- NIC1 [CentOS Box] NIC2 --- Switch to other PCs
We have a BUNCH of exposed services that are on special ports -- for example, to connect to one machine, you go in with [IP_Address]:12000, and to connect to another, [IP_Address]:12002, etc., etc. We're currently using OpenSuse 10.3 on this box, and YaST makes this criminally easy (you give it the incoming port number and the destination IP/port numbers and it just works). But OpenSuse 10.3 is nearing EOL, we're buying a new machine, and I'd like to use CentOS on the new one.
I've read the sparse Webmin documentation in their Wiki, and it leads one to believe that you simply insert a "NAT" rule. But there's obviously something they're leaving out. I *am* opening the ports in the firewall. But when I log in to [IP_Address]:port, it just times out. The port forwarding never occurs. The test in this case is SSH, and I know that SSHD is working properly because I can log into that machine just fine from another PC on the same internal subnet.
I am configuring a new installation of CentOS 5.4 with the goal of setting up a server. Ive been through the installation and set up everything that I thought that I had to setup. Im getting into CentOS because my work utilizes this distribution. I do have some debian experience, and I have used Ubuntu on both server and desktop platforms.
Now, when setting up Ubuntu, I found that I was able to get networking up much easier. During the initial installation it had asked me to choose between DHCP or manual configuration. As this is going to be a server I want it setup with a static IP. But for some reason no matter what I do I can not get the machine connected. I go so far as trying to do a 'yum update' and I can not make a connection.
A few things Ive noticed that might be applicable here . . . . .
For DNS servers, I am unsure exactly what I need to put here. My ISP is Cox. I am not sure what NS's to put there for them, so I thought that I would be able to use third party DNS servers such as OpenDNS or the Google Public DNS. I know that I have setup my debian server like that with no issues. Also when setting up my debian server it prepopulated certain areas that I am required to fill when setting up CentOS. Example, when setting up localhost.localdomain -- I would choose my hostname and local domain was prepopulated as ph.cox.net. I dont know if this is something that I have to use, or if it would change if I am using third party DNS.
My resolv.conf file looks like this

nameserver (IP address of third party dns either opendns or google)

I am trying to learn about networking and am looking to set up a mini network between three bare bones Centos machines in Virtualbox. I set up the machines with a static IP. In the Virtualbox I am using NAT and have the IPs as follows
Centos-1
IP: 10.0.2.15
Gateway: 10.0.2.2
DNS: 10.0.2.3
Centos-2
IP: 10.0.2.16
Gateway: 10.0.2.2
DNS: 10.0.2.3
Centos-3
IP: 10.0.2.17
Gateway: 10.0.2.2
DNS: 10.0.2.3
On all machines i can ping google.com, and yum updates, but I can not ping any other machine. It says they are unreachable. NOt really sure what to do. Any help would be much appreciated.
I'm setting up a LDAP server to centralize the admin of a bunch of Centos 5.2 servers. I've got the LDAP server set up. I've got my client machines reading their autofs mount tables from LDAP. Now, I'd like to get name resolution working via LDAP.
Here's what I have so far:
1) /etc/nsswitch.conf contains the line "hosts: files dns ldap"
2) /etc/openldap/ldap.conf has URI and NSS_BASE_HOSTS set up to indicate root of "hosts" subtree in LDAP database.
3) "hosts" node in database is an "orginizationalUnit" object.
4) Below "hosts" I have a number of "ipHost" nodes defined with "cn" set to host name and "ipHostNumber" set to host's IP address
This setup doesn't work. Attempting to ping a host by name locks up. If I take the "ldap" keyword off of the "hosts:" entry in the nsswitch.conf file, the ping then returns immediately with "unknown host".
I'm surprised that there isn't better information available online on how to do this. I've found bits and pieces, but nothing concise. how to get name resolution working through LDAP?

Sprint has a guide: "Wireless Mobile Broadband Setup Guide for Linux OS" that I am using to setup the air card. When I go through the procedure in the manual for "Setting Up PPP Using KPPP" the last task is to query the modem to see if Linux recognizes it. When I do the query I get a response "unable to open modem". I have tried going back through the PPP setup but still get the same response.

I have installed a sip server on the box. From the box I would like to access machines on wan and lan. First of all, is it possible? If yes, I have setup up the nics with default wan gateway. However, when I try to ping wan url, no response. Are there other things I need to do to accomplish this?

this is the frist time I've installed Ubuntu as my main OS, but I'm having some trouble.I cannot get my dual screen setup to work properly. I'm running a gigabyte mobo, with an core i5 and a Nvidia 8800 GTS 320mb video card (2x dvi). My monitors are a 24 inch acer (1920x1200) and a 32 inch Phillips TV (1920x1080).
The main screen, the acer, is working just fine with his max resolution via a DVI cable. My tv is connected via a DVI to HDMI converter and it does work, but only at 640x480 resolution. The screen is very small in the center of the TV. I've tried changing the resolution in the xorg.conf file but upon restarting it just turned my TV off.
i am attempting to setup a macbook run by os x 10.5 for dual boot with ubuntu 9.10.
however, when get the part where usually a gui interface which allows one to specify the size of the new ubuntu partition appears i only get the options for using the entire disk, the largest free space or manual partition.
how can i set this machine up for dual boot?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am having some trouble setting up a dual boot with Win XP and Slackware 13.1. Lilo lists both Linux and Windows, but when I select Windows, all I get is a black screen. I have two hard drives, sda1 and sdb1. I first installed Windows on sdb1 (it is a smaller, older drive). I then installed Slackware on sda1 and selected to install Lilo on the MBR. I'm guessing that by doing this, I wrote over the Windows information that was already there. Could this be my problem? I feel like this should be an easy fix, but I just don't know where to start in order to fix it. If it helps, here is the end of my lilo.conf file.

I would like to set up my computer to dual boot with two different linux distributions, Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit and Slackware 13.1 64-bit. I'm not 100% sure how to go about this exactly. Ideally I would like for both distributions to share the /home directory, that way I can switch between distros and keep all my personal data neat and tidy without having to access it across partitions. This has the added benefit of keeping my filesystem usage in check. However I'm not sure if I'll have to go through a lot of permission headaches with this scheme. I would be using the same username on both distros. At the moment I'm thinking of having a common /boot directory, two different / directories (one for each distro) and a common /home but I don't know if this is feasible. I

So I wanted to dual boot Ubuntu with Windows 7, but have no idea how to partition out Ubuntu. At the moment, I'm working with a 300GB harddrive that will solely hold installed applications and stuff like that. Any shared/storage data will be put on separate harddrives altogether.
I plan on using a 40-50GB partition for Windows 7 alone (no installed applications and stuff). And here come the questions about Ubuntu partitioning. From what I read, do I only need three separate partitions? (/, /home, /swap) Even then I'm not 100% sure what each of these partitions represent. But my research says... / = equivalent to my Windows 7 partition, /home = the partition where installed applications go and other non-essential Ubuntu stuff, /swap = virtual memory
With all that said, to comfortably run Ubuntu can I have my partitions be these sizes?
/ = 10GB
/home = 20-30GB
/swap = 2GB (Do I even need this if I have 2GB of ram?)
Windows 7 = 40-50GB
W7 Apps = remaining space
I don't know what exactly I want to do with Ubuntu, but is a /home of 20-30GB adequate to install lot's and lot's of apps?
I'm in widows xp sp3 right now, I'm just wondering how do I go about, setting up dual booting with out breaking my Windows Xp OS, being last time - I setup Dual booting with the Ubuntu setup disk and that didn't work at all, Xp was broken after that. Would anybody know of software that does the dual-booting setup from windows with the linux ubuntu iso image?

Currently I have a broadband connection at home. I have dual boot Windows XP Professional and Debian (which I installed a week ago through CD). I have done some preliminary tests for the network and I am posting the screenshots for the tests (e.g. lspci, ifconfig, etc.). I also did two more commands. For 'cat /etc/network/ifstate' the output was 'No such file or directory'. Same output was for the command 'cat /etc/network/options'.

Then I went back to Ubuntu but now I have decided to stick with Fedora. The first time I installed Fedora it gave me options for choosing default OS and other things, now I can't remember how I did that and can't figure out how to do that agian. How do I do that agian? I want it to automatically boot into Windows Vista. I am installing Fedora on a seperate hard drive.

I need to increase the size of the Windows 7 partition (c:windowswinsxs seems to be something not easily remedied).
GParted didn't work in moving things around (bad sector) so I wiped out its partition (# 2 out of 3) and I was able to increase the size of the Windows 7 partition (I can reinstall CentOS easily and not much work lost).
Except ... no more grub menu (unsurprising). This incantation does allow me to boot into Windows 7.
Is there any way of rebuilding the grub menu short of reinstalling CentOS (5.5)?
I have a laptop that came with Windows Vista (64-bit) installed. I created a new partition and installed XP (also 64-bit) alongside it.Last night I shrunk my XP partition and created another new partition and installed Linux (CentOS 64-bit) on it. I made an error in judgment and didn't allocate enough space, so I need about 10 more gigs for the Linux partition. It boots up and runs, but I need about 10 more gigs of storage for the files I want to keep on the partition (and yes, they have to be on the partition, I definitely need to know how to do this, not a workaround)I went into Vista and shrunk the XP partition by 10 gigs, so now I have 10 gigs of free, non-partitioned space.
As it stands, when I start up the computer I get the GRUB boot loader. I can boot my Linux install or choose "Other" and be taken to the Vista boot loader. From there I can choose XP or Vista to boot.So, my question is... what is the best way to append the 10 gigs of free space to the Linux partition? Is this something I should do inside of Linux? I have the option to do it in Vista, but the partition shows up as "healthy" but without a file system type.I just don't want to screw up the boot loader, partitions or anything else.This isn't my area of expertise, so if anyone could give me a good suggestion or solid answer
I have Windows 7 on my laptop and am attempting to install Ubuntu 11.04 from CD.I boot from the disk drive, follow the prompts and eventually get to the screen where I can set how much space I want to give to the Ubuntu partition vs the Windows partition. My hard disk is 250GB, so I reduce the Windows one to 100GB (currently has 80GB of files on it) and set the Ubuntu one to 130GB (the other 20GB is split between the two hidden Windows 7 partitions).
I then click to continue and the progress bar for the install starts up but doesn't move, it just sits at 0%. I realised that the dialogue box underneath the progress bar can still be expanded and asks me to test using -n and -s, but when I type either of these into the box and hit return, nothing happens. I have checked my download of the .iso I used using WinMD5Sum and the hash matches up. I have already tried installing from USB but this threw an error, hence using CD. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1546 running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit Processor: AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-75 2.20GHz
my laptop screen has 1900x1280 (native resolution) and my second monitor has 1600x1080
After browsing the forums and messing around with drivers I managed to get the resolution up to 1600x1080 (from 1000x800 at install) on the laptop screen. No luck at all with the second monitor. I currently have it connected with both VGA and DVI.
