CentOS 5 :: Network Frozen In 5 With Xen?

Feb 3, 2011

I have installation of Xen and Centos 5 (all RPMs are from Centos repositories). I have several DomU virtual machines running on this machine. When I try to copy some bigger amount of data from another physical computer to Dom0/DomU on this machine, the network freezes. The link is still up, I can see that the connection really links on the switch, but nothing is received or sent to the network. I tried to stop all the DomUs, stop the network, unload the network drivers from memory and loading them again and starting the network, but the problem persists. Only reboot solves the problem. Sometimes the amount of data have to be around gigabytes (last time it was 10GB), sometimes 500MB is enough to stop the network... I also tried to change the NIC, but the behavior is the same. Btw. logs don't say anything :-/

PS: this is the output of my lspci:

00:00.1 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. K8T800Pro Host Bridge

CentOS 5 :: Cancel A Frozen Startup Daemon?

Mar 25, 2009

I used my boot disk in rescue mode to solve this, but I would really like to know how to do this the easy way.

Question: when I am booting up and getting all those "OK" green remarks, how do I cancel a daemon that freezes instead of giving me an ok or failed? I have tried <Ctrl><C> with no joy. I have tried dropping to interactive mode ("I") and bypassing the bad daemon, but interactive mode freezes when I go to start GDM, so no joy there either.

CentOS 5 Server :: Updates Have Frozen Gnome Interface

Jun 21, 2010

Just setup 5.5 as Server-GUI installation last night. Ran latest updates today; it requested a restart; logged in to console; GUI desktop all looked normal at first, except that the panels on top and bottom are empty, except for the menu "Applications Places System" items (upper left) are there, but non-functional. The desktop icons for "Computer, Home, Trash" are functional. Update as I am writing this: The menu header items are now GONE as well, but icons still work (but don't help me).

Problem is, I don't have access to any apps that will allow me to reboot the machine with access to "Shutdown/Restart". If I hit the reset button, will it be OK? Or will it blow up like a Windows machine? Luckily I can reinstall if necessary, but the update thing might crash me again. All was fine before applying updates. Anybody having problems with the latest updates?

Fedora :: Computer Seemed Frozen - No Mouse - Keyboard - No Network Visibility

Dec 21, 2009

so, last night i checked my e-mail, jumped on facebook for a minute and went to bed. i got up this morning and my computer seemed frozen; no mouse/keyboard, no network visibility.....nothing. the screen was just frozen. tried too ssh into it to reboot, but the network wasn't up on it. i had to hard reboot. NOW, it just reboots forever....and ever....and ever. i have a WinXP partition on there along with my F12 and that wont boot either. selecting a previous kernel does nothing either. it wont even boot off the F12 install DVD. just keeps rebooting. I've never had this happen to me. so, it seems like a hardware thing to me, but i dont know if its my mobo or the drive. i suspect a mobo issue as the drive still spins up and gets me to the grub menu.

Ubuntu :: Frozen During Upgrade From 10.10 To 11.04?

May 29, 2011

I run Ubuntu (10.10) from a flash drive on my Dell computer. Yesterday when I tried to upgrade it to 11.04 After downloading a lot of files, and then installing most of them, my computer froze. When I restarted my computer, It went straight to booting Windows XP. I didn't get a GRUB screen at all.So somehow GRUB and Ubuntu got screwed up, and I'm wondering if there's anyway I could salvage what I have (I know I can use a Live CD to get my files off of there). So is there any way I could avoid having to do a clean install? Could I possibly salvage the files which upgrade to 11.04?

- in init 3 : zypper cc && zypper ref && zypper up does not work : after reboot using "shutdown -r now" the pc is frozen, with the green screen and white lizard (no access to keyboard, nor to grub options), ctrl+ alt+ f1 is ko for example.

- in init 3 and only with 3 repos (oss, non-oss, and update of 11.4) a zypper dup works but a bug with mozilla firefox 4 brading opensuse which is ko . we continued , can one package break down a zypper dup ? ( same ko result : after reboot usinf shutdown -r now the pc is frozen with the green screen and white lizard (no access to keyboard, nor to grub options) )

Ubuntu :: Boots To Frozen Desktop?

Jan 20, 2010

Preface: I'm a relative neophyte when it comes to Linux anything. I was running Hardy in an attempt to learn. I recently decided to upgrade to Karmic. I liked the look of "Mint 8" (AKA Karmic).I've been running Mint nicely for about a week after a fresh install. Then.... something went spastic...

I went logged in as root and changed file permissions for my "/" folders. The change was simply making group "root" able to read and write files. Than was it. It carried out the change smoothly.

When I hit "Logout" from root, to return to my user account, the screen went white. Stuff flickered when I hit keys. I ended up having to hard boot to get it moving.

Now when I boot, Grub works, it boots to my desktop, graphics display appropriately, but NO mouse and NO keyboard. Dead system. Only thing I can do is hard boot.

I tried the recovery from Grub, no change. I have no idea where to begin. I go back and reinstall it again (3rd time). Sure glad I've kept my old W2K, or I'd be screwed.

PS - I booted the live Hardy CD to look at files. When partitions are mounted no files in "/" or "/home" can be seen.

Ubuntu :: Boot Frozen At 'Starting Up'

Jul 3, 2010

I lost power to my ubuntu box earlier today, so it didn't shut down properly. I'm now trying to start it but it keeps getting stuck at 'Starting Up' for over an hour. I've tried pressing escape to boot a different version or into recovery mode. The only difference I get is when loading a recovery mode it just puts up a flashing underscore instead of 'starting up . . .' - it still hangs there. This is a small box without a optical drive which is why I haven't tried a live CD.

I'm not really familiar with linux or boot issues.

Ubuntu :: Mouse Frozen, Even After Restart?

Aug 26, 2010

i'm having an issue with the touchpad on my hp pavilion laptop. as of this afternoon, the cursor has started to freeze immediately as ubuntu is booted up (but it is normal during the login screen process). i think this has happened because i accidently pushed a button i didn't know about right above the touchpad/mouse which froze the mouse, but i was able to toggle this a few times by pushing the button again.

the mouse froze completely after toggling this a few times, and it comes back after a restart but only during the login screen - it freezes immediatly as ubuntu is loaded and the cursor changes from black to white. the keyboard is still functional. are there keyboard shortcuts i can use to get to the start menu or the terminal to try and fix this issue? and what do you think i should do about it?

Ubuntu :: 10.10 - Login Screen Frozen

Nov 3, 2010

A few days ago I tried installing Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition on my laptop, since it doesn't have such a large screen. I installed it, restarted, and got presented with the login screen. I typed my username and password, waited for a while, sice it seemed to have frozen, and got presented with an error message saying something about "unity drivers" (the window didn't have a windows border, so metacity didn't seem to have loaded yet), and sorry, but I don't remeber the exact message anymore. I clicked the OK button, the system froze for a while again, and I got presented with the login screen again... This repeated itself 3 times, and then I came on the idea to set the session to Ubuntu Desktop Edition. It was slow, but it loaded, but it seemed to have loaded only half of the environment...

Today I decided to just try again, but with the Desktop Edition this time. I booted the CD into a live session, but all I got was a wallpaper with 2 icons jumping up and down. After waiting for quite a long time I got 2 error messages saying Metacity and Gnome-Panel had crashed. When I switched to command line mode (CTRL+ALT+F1), i got a command line interface wich was adding 2 new error messages every second...

Ubuntu :: Bootup Usually To Frozen Screen

Dec 30, 2010

Have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a couple of Dell Inspiron 2650 laptops (both 512M memory) and when they run, they're great, but they only successfully boot up maybe 10% of the attempts. Most of the time, the touchpad and keyboard are inoperative, but I recall sometimes the enter key gets me past my user Id to input password. Trying to enter recovery mode isn't any better, but once into recovery, I'll boot up in safe graphics, but it is probably only running because it succeeded in entering recovery, anyways. I have elected to to boot up in safe graphics, but they still both freeze. No error messages, just a frozen background/icons screen.

Ubuntu has searched the hardware and reports there's nothing requiring proprietary drivers installed.

After reading all the other problems posted, I figure my laptops are doing pretty darn good, but it sure would be nice not to set around starting up and shutting down, over and over.

Hardware :: Mouse Frozen After Boot?

May 16, 2010

I've had this issue for years and on several different machines, all running various versions of Debian. I'm using a PS2 Logitech Mouseman 3-button mouse. Sometimes if I forget to move the mouse during boot, the pointer will be frozen. Keyboard works fine. When I remember to keep the mouse moving until the login screen appears, the pointer will work just fine.Right now I'm running 3 computers sharing same mouse/keyboard/monitor all different Linux OS, all have same issue. On a separate 4th computer running Mepis I changed that mouse to a different brand and problem went away. The problem seems peculiar to the Logitech mouse. (my wife wanted a computer that works, no hassles)The problem is getting more chronic. Is there a way to just put the mouse control into a configuration file and run it at startup instead of having the system do an autodetect?

Software :: TVtime Opens But It Is Frozen?

Feb 15, 2011

I have been using Tvtime for several years and never had trouble with the video until now. Now it opens, but it's frozen. There is no picture and no sound, just a black screen that I can't control in any way. Even to close it, I have to go through the terminal. There are no error messages, however.

I can still get channels using Mplayer, so the tuner should not be the problem. However, it is an Hauppauge 950.

I was using Ubuntu Lucid on both partitions. Initially, one quit, but not the other. About a month later the other quit while I was watching which makes me think it may be something I have simply hit on the keyboard. I have since upgraded to Maverick on one and reinstalled Tvtime to no avail.

CentOS 5 :: Can Redhat Network Be Used For Centos?

Apr 16, 2010

I'm in a research institution with about 20 linux desktops currently running different versions of fedora. The sysadmins used to update and configure each of these machines individually. We want to move to centos to make operating systems more uniform and simplify administration.

The basic needs are: One central, easy-to-use package management for all machines central management of configuration files for all machines. In addition it would be nice to have a local repository with a subset of user-installable rpms. It looks like rhel can do this with the redhat network. Is it possible on centos, too? If yes, is it necessary to pay a subscription to rhn to use their web hosting of services?

Fedora Installation :: F10 Live CD - PC Got Frozen - No Responses From Anything

Jul 12, 2009

My hard disk is blank now due to some faults I made in installation.I made a USB stick from which can start Fedora 10 livecd image successfully. My USB device is only 2GB, so livecd image is my only choice. Everything is fine in live cd system. but when I try to install system to hard disk, my PC got frozen - no responses from anything. This situation only happens when I set up the partition and began to write image to the hard disk. It happens at about 5 percent of the progress bar every time. It seems I can't install F10 this way.

So I tried another way : using this LiveCD USB Stick, install it in text mode. However, strange thing came up too: when I finished install the system , it tips "reboot". so I pressed "reboot", however it start KDE and then got frozen again. When I restart PC by "reset" button, it tips me can't find OS - insert system disk and press Enter. It's a BIOS message , so I think at least GRUB is not working. But why and how this happens? I set up them correctly without error tips. But now it can't be started. I set GRUB to be installed in MBR during the installation. My hardware is like this : AMD 5000+ black edition , 4GB RAM , ati 3200 video card , 320GB hard disk (sata port).
