Jul 25, 2011On windows I really only used Notepad++ as my text editor, it had two features that I loved.What I need to accomplish is what I would do with Notepad++ column editor.I could have like 100 lines, and place the cursor at a column, and goto edit>column editor, and I could insert an incrementing number. (I could also pad the incrementing number with 0s, this was GREAT for making batch files among other things.)So each line at that column had a number higher than the previous line.The other feature that I used sometimes was a search/replace with regex patterns.Does anyone know of an editor that has those features for linux? I am mostly after the column editor insert feature but if you know of one with both features that would rock.

Mar 3, 2009Trying to install Centos 5.2.i386 from DVD in text install (I'm assuming I need to do text install as I'm setting up raid arrays)
I have 4x150Gb raptors where I want the following layout:
/dev/sda/
/dev/sda1 100Mb (for /boot in raid 1, 4 disks)
/dev/sda2 1000Mb (for swap, raid 0, 4 disks)
/dev/sda3 4000Mb (for /, raid 5, 4 disks)

In the last attempt I did, sdb,sdc and sdd all had the correct ordering of partitions, but sda looked like above, which means I would need to assemble by boot array partition array as /dev/md0 = /dev/sda3, /dev/sdb1, dev/sdc1, dev/sdd1
Why is the partition numbering moving around as I create them?

Mar 1, 2010I want to share my DVD drive on my desktop with my Eee PC using NFS. I have set up NFS without any problems but I can't watch any DVD's.I have mounted /media/cdrom and I can see the files on the desktop DVD drive.When attempting to play the DVD over NFS using VLC I receive a loud screeching noise but it does play for different durations of time which I'm guessing are the DVD's chapters)

Nov 19, 2009I have a computer playing movie automatically in loop,and I want to know which movie is now playing in this computer and report it to a server. I use bash script to do this. If I use "pe -ef|grep mplayer ........" ,it seems to complex. Is there any easier way to get the name and store it in a parameter like $movie_name ? And also, I want to know if I can know whether the mplayer is running well. For example, if I use "mplayer wrong.txt". You can still get "ps -ef|grep mplayer....",but you just know that mplayer will get error to play .txt file.

[mnt]# mount -t iso9660 -o ro,loop=/dev/loop1 /media/Hitachi_SATA_2TB/iso_files/Movies/movie-2.iso /mnt/disk2

the files for disk2, disk3 are exactly the same except disk2 has 2 .vob files instead of 3. Can I make this work by changing the names of some of these files before merging them into one directory and then running the mkisofs command to create a new single iso image? If so, what names do I give so that the movie plays correctly? If not, just how do you do this?

May 14, 2011I'm trying to watch a DVD video using Movie Player, but nothing happens. It asked for a MPEG-2 decoder but then said Gstream already had the decoder. But to be sure I hunted down some rpm files with a free MPEG-2 decoder and installed them. Nothing happened. Before that, Movie Player asked for an Advanced Stream Format Demuxer. Then it told me it was already installed. I tried to uninstall Gstream. Maybe it was installed badly for reasons unknown, but the uninstaller warned that it would take 50 files with it.
I got the impression it was daring me to uninstall Gstream, so I chickened out. But I am upset now. This problem has wasted half of my Saturday day off and it is still not solved. I forgot to say I had also installed libdvdcss, in desperation. Nothing happened. This computer does display DVD videos with Movie Player using a different distro. I'm not surprised Fedora has problems. But you figure by 2011, watching a DVD video should be no problem by now in any distribution.
General :: Extracting All The Still Images From A Movie?
Jun 25, 2011I have a large number of paper sheets to scan. Instead of an autofeed or flatbed scanner, I'd like to use my photo camera. After a while, it occurred to me that instead of making a photo for each page, I could install the camera on a tripod, set it to record video and then extract the images from the video.
That way, I'd just have to handle the papers: Pick one, place it in front of the camera, wait a moment, replace it. Is there a Linux software to get all images without motion out of a movie? Kind of a non-motion-detection.

Whilst discussing preferred aps, I can also highly recommend ditching Firefox and Evolution for Opera; more features, faster browsing, handles plugin videos better (no greying out), has a built in mail client so everything's in one place, etc. Tried just about every other browser, always go back to Opera.
