Ubuntu :: SATA II / Error "ata4: Limiting SATA Link Speed To 1.5 Gbps" - Allowing The SSD To Run At SATA II Speeds?

May 1, 2011

I keep getting this error in my log viewer every 2 seconds: Code: ata4: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps I have a dual boot SSD and I have run many SMART tests in windows and linux, (using smartmon tools and the disk utility) and the reports are all 100% healthy..... My research shows that this error represents one of the following:

1. Problem with SATA controller
2. Changing BIOS to allow SATA
3. Changing SATA mode to PATA or AHCI
4. Replacing the SATA cable
5. Allowing the SSD to run at SATA II speeds, i.e. 3 Gbps

- Does anyone know how to try number 5, i.e. allowing the SSD to run at SATA II speeds? I am lost here and this problem has caused my machine to crash twice when watching a movie in linux/ ubuntu. (It is worth noting that the crashes have only occurred in linux and I have never had an issue in windows, so it does seem to be a linux setting somewhere, hence why I think it is a "allowing SATA II to run at correct speeds issue")

Ubuntu :: Speed Limit - Burn Data CD At 8x Only?

Jun 13, 2010

My DVD player attached to my TV is picky. Burn CD's (with avi files) at 8X and it plays them. 16X and it complains about bad disk. Every time. In karmic, I can only get cdrecord to burn at 16x.

Here's the command:
cdrecord -dev=/dev/scd0 -speed=8 -dao -pad -v something.iso

And it burns at 16x instead of 8x. Command issued with root privilege. Identical hardware under CentOS 5.x and it burns at 8x, like I asked it to. I'm all SATA if it matters. What do I need to do to get the version of cdrecord with karmic to burn a data CD at 8x? For whatever reason, CDs burned at 16x just don't work in the DVD player attached to my TV.

I think I would need a second nic, & router. Eth0 would run a dchp server, eth1 would run a client. Server :: IPtables And TC To Limit Network Speed

May 14, 2010

I am trying to limit bandwidth of certain ip addresses on my server. I have been doing hours of reading and not getting very far... So far I believe the iptables command is

ptables -A PREROUTING -s 178.33.23.44 -t mangle -j MARK --set-mark 2
ptables -A PREROUTING -s 178.33.23.45 -t mangle -j MARK --set-mark 2
ptables -A PREROUTING -s 178.33.23.46 -t mangle -j MARK --set-mark 2
ptables -A PREROUTING -s 178.33.23.47 -t mangle -j MARK --set-mark 2

and now I just need the tc command to read those marks and limit bandwidth, I have a gigabit connection and would like to limit each of these ip addresses to 10mbit in and out.

Fedora Hardware :: Full Speed USB MSC Device Detected As Input Device?

Apr 7, 2011

I am working on an embedded system, which is an USB MSC device that supports some vendor specific scsi commands. I am using FC10 laptop as USB host for testing, and it runs some small apps based on sg3. All has been well for ~ a week. The FC10 laptop is able to communicate with the device and retrieve data. Suddenly, starting from today, the laptop is not able to properly detect the device. When plugged-in, the MSC device is detected as input device (I thought). This is observed from "dmesg" output and changes in "/dev/input/".The device under development is running at full speed. When I connect to winXP, no problem. A windows file explorer pops up, showing the content of the drive. Also, the FC10 has no problem with other USB flash drive (high speed).

I know the existence of download managers like d4x, wget, jdownloader, etc... but some downloads can only be done by browser. I know trickle too but if I want to change the speed limit I have to 'restart' the command (interrupting the current download). Then I didn't find an extension for Chromium.

General :: Bandwidth Management - How To Limit Connection Speed

Jan 4, 2010

In my household a number of people use the internet. Up to a maximum of 3 wired connections and 2 wireless connections at its peak, all connection through my D-LINK G604T router. The problem is, when one person is downloading or watching ..... or whatever, the others using the internet suffer. I've spent hours configuring QoS on my router, and long story short, no matter how I configure it, it just simply does not work. QoS in no way shape or form limits connection speed (which it says it should). Anyway.

I have a spare computer under my desk, and I'd like to know if I could set this up with a (free) linux distro that limits bandwidth speed per connection. For example, of the 1500 kb/ps (about) my modem pulls, is there a way to limit that to 768 or 512 per connection? so person A can still download, person B can still watch ....., and person C can still play counterstrike with a latency under 100. This would solve many, many arguments in my house I am *fairly* good with computers, but if the distro came with documentation and a GUI that would be awesome.

* TL;DR: *
Is there a linux distro I can load on a spare computer that limits bandwidth per connection, wireless or otherwise, with good documentation?
Failing that is there firmware I can use for my modem (dlink g604t) that would do the same?
Failing that do you know of any good hitmen that would solve my family arguments, ahem, permanently?

Fedora Networking :: Limit Outbound TCP Connections To Single IP?

Oct 19, 2009

I'm having a problem that seems to plague a lot of people judging from my research on the web. I have a hosting provider that limits the number of incoming connections to the shared host to 50 per IP.

I have a single IP for outbound connections and I use Squid as a proxy server.

Lately I've tripped across the 50 connection limit frequently - and that's with only 1 user. It seems the problem is related to the performance you can get out of a desktop these days. Its not impossible to have several browsers open with several connections to different sites on the same server - and boom - locked out!

So it occurred to me that there must be some way to limit the number of outbound connections in the kernel - but I've not found it. I did find that Microsoft had been limiting the number of outbound connections in XP to 10 to address the virus problem, and I've found countless hosting complaints and dialog on the subject with no easy solution.

So my question is simply, does anyone know how to limit the number of OUTBOUND connections to a single IP in the kernel?

General :: Extended Sata Partition Shrunk At 15 Partition Limit - How To Re-enlarge

Jun 2, 2010

extended sata partition shrunk at 15 partition limit, how to re-enlarge i hit the 15 partition limit, forgetting it now exists for sata drives, thinking i would add more. upon creation of the 15th, it squished the end of the extended partition to meet the last logical partition, leaving a large unallocated portion after the extended partition, which seemingly nothing can be done with, just sat being wasted space. i have since deleted a few of those partitions, but so far have still failed to find a way to recoup the unallocated space back into the extended partition.

[URL]

if necessary, i'll do it the painful long winded way of backing up and starting the extended partition again from scratch, but i really rather wouldnt have to do that. i'm sure there must be a way of telling the extended partition to once again reach the end of the drive.

Ubuntu Servers :: Raid1 Reads At Single Disk Speed?

May 3, 2011

im on 10.10(desktop) and mdadm was v2.8.1 from 2008, very out of date so i tried 3.2.1 -> no change. mdadm raid1 read speeds are the same as single disk. note i used the tests in the disk utility benchmarking tool at first --these showed raid 5 atleast to be much better but when i tried dd reads raid5 dropped off with larger data to almost the same (slow) speed as raid1. compare:

[code]....

using two partitions will be enough to show raid1 performs at single disk speed. I dont really want to use a 4 disk raid0 just to get the read speed i should be able to get with raid1 as i dont really care about the size loss. I would of course use raid10 but i have found this suffers from the same problem (achieve same read speed as 2 disk stripe). So whilst im shocked others aren't reporting this, unless there is some obscure reason why my system would give these results i think raid1 in not behaving as it should.
