CentOS 5 :: Change From Kde To Gnome?

May 22, 2010

during installation I uncheck Gnome and check Kde for desktop environment.

my regret is that i'm never like Kde coz it's too complicated.

so when I try to reinstall Centos again, it prompt an error saying the packages already installed.

Is there a way to change to Gnome desktop environment?

I use Package Manager and check Gnome and uncheck Kde but to date I'm still not able to change to Gnome.

CentOS 5 :: 5.2 (native) - Gnome Dektop Munged Slightly Due To Attempted Gnome Upgrade

Mar 11, 2009

Against all advice in Centos docs, I built and installed several gnome packages in order to upgrade to the latest Gnumeric. Among them were: fontconfig, pango, gtk+, cairo, glib. goffice, pixman, tiff, and atk. Afterwards, I got missing fonts with some apps, but the biggest problem is interference with my Vmware Workstation GUIs. Yesterday I removed all the libraries I installed hoping to recover. Now things are better, but when I open a terminal on the desktop it opens jammed in the upper-left corner with the top grab bar out of reach of the mouse. Before I remove the ~/.gnome* directories, how to restore things?

Fedora :: Gnome 3 - How To Change Key Binding

Jun 28, 2011

I'm slowly coming to terms with Gnome 3 but one thing I can't get used to is using the "Windows Key".

For me it's a difficult key to use regularly. What I'd rather to is remap the "Switch between overview and desktop" action to alt-space, which I am used to from "Launchy" which I have been using in Windows for some time.

A couple of issues though - this is already mapping to "Activate the window menu". I never use it though. Are there any implications of remaping it?

Secondly, what is the command I need to map the key to, in order to emulate the Gnome 3 "Windows Key" behaviour?

Debian Multimedia :: Both KDE And Gnome Won't Start / Change This?

Apr 9, 2011

I'm using Debian 2.6.32-5-amd64 (testing) for several years now. Initial installation was done at least two years ago, without any issues. I do keep my system up-to-date. However, a few months ago, after an apt-get update/upgrade/system-upgrade, I discovered that, if I try to launch KDE or Gnome, I only see a black screen and I actually need to restart my computer. On some cases the system even froze and needed to hardware reset, and run fsck in recovery mode after rebooting. Really very annoying... Since I don't use KDE or Gnome desktops (just a few applications depending on KDE/Gnome libraries), I didn't bother to figure out what is happening. However, others use my computer occasionally, and I would like to get KDE and Gnome working again. I purged and reinstalled everything that had to do with KDE or Gnome, even deleted KDE/Gnome files in my home directory, but the black screens are still there, everytime I try to start any of those desktops. Note that kdm or gdm don't even mention KDE or Gnome as available sessions, although all necessary packages are installed. I have no idea what to do to fix the problem.

Another question: I recently got rid of gdm because it is buggy and tried wdm instead. However, /etc/profile is not read anymore. Apparently, wdm does not use /etc/profile by default. Is there any way to change this?

Fedora :: Change The Gnome Menu Icon?

Feb 18, 2009

After much Google-ing and headaches I finally found out how to change the Gnome Menu Icon in F10. I love the Echo Icon theme, but I hate that Pac Man main menu icon. I had to get rid of it. Here's how to change that icon--and even to replace the standard "Infinity" icon with a much nicer version--or even switch that out for something totally different.

First, enable GUI root logon. This makes copying/pasting the icon to the protected icon folder much easier. Here's how [URL]When you have completed that, log out. When you get to the GDM login choose "Other" enter "root" in Username and then your root password. Now you're logged in as root.

Go to USR/Share/Pixmaps and there are a few nice Fedora icons. There's the "Infinity" logo but it's a much nicer, shinier version of the standard one. It's called "fedora-logo-sprite". But if you're feeling adventurous then try--as I did--"fedora-logo-small", which is the fedora name and a small "Infinity" logo (there's also the "Powered by Fedora" icon too). Copy one of those and paste it to Home or Desktop, or wherever you want. You just want to put it somewhere to stage. Now change the name to "start-here".

Now go to /USR/Share/Icons/(name of icon set using)/24x24/places/ and remove the "start-here" icon (send to Trash). Go to where you staged your replacement icon, copy it, go back to the /USR/Share/Icons/(icon set used)/24x24/places/ folder and paste it. Be sure to empty the Trash Can before you log off as Root User. Log off/ log back on as "you" and the icon should appear. I used the "Fedora (Infinity)" logo as Main Menu instead of the Menu Bar and it works great. The "Powered by Fedora" icon would look great too.

Fedora :: Gnome Shell - Change Defaults?

Jun 3, 2010

I feel like this is a RTFM question, so if anyone wants to just direct me to the right manual, that's fine.

I just installed gnome-shell and i cant seem to find anyway to customize anything, esp. the task bar, the clock, et cetera

is there a preferences gui or something that I cant find? I feel like i'm trying to use a mac....

It seems pretty sweet, but, i dont know how to get used to not having a window list... i dont wanna pull up the "activities window" or alt tab every time i want switch windows (esp when my hand is used to just moving to the top of the screen and clicking on the right window...

There's this autohide taskbar at the bottom of the screen, but i cant for the life of me figure out what it's for, or how to put things on it....

OpenSUSE :: Did Gnome Integration Change Between SLED 11.1 And 11.2?

Apr 27, 2010

apps that ran and installed just fine under 11.1 don't (seem to) under 11.2.I was running Gnome under 11.1, and have used the same desktop as I moved to 11.2.For example, I was able to install and run the Novell Support Advisor 1.1 under SLED 11.1 just fine. I would need to authenticate as root before the app would run, but it would run just fine. After I upgraded from SLED 11.1 to 11.2, things just don't seem to be as stable. NSA (and other apps) seem to install, but their icons don't appear in the applications folder, and when I login su and then attempt to run, the terminal window usually hangs.

I can't get a CIFS client to install (I see it in the list of installed apps, but it's not present under YAST).Banshee was a beautiful app under 11.1, but I feel like I spend more time working around it's glitches in 11.2 rather than setting it to play and enjoying it's usefulness. The Novell Client (yes, I know, it's not officially supported under 11.2) has caused me enough heartache that I VNC an XP box just to get to files. So anyway, enough whining, what can/should I do to work through these issues? Should I just give up and go back to 11.1? Is it better to burn and re-build rather than upgrade per the OpenSUSE docs? Is there some "magic" log files folder (other than availble via YAST) to see where error messages are occurring so I can troubleshoot the issues better?

This is really inconvenient since I have been using bash in english on fedora and ubuntu for 10 years now. So is there a way to reconfigure gnome term (bash) to default back to english and leave the GUI in Dutch?
