Ubuntu :: USB Boot Caught In Loop When Loading PXE?

Jan 22, 2011

I am having issues loading Ubuntu 10.10 from USB. I have a HP Compaq nx9110 laptop, p4 3.2 512ram etc with a dead hard drive. I would buy a new HDD but i cant really vouch spending $80Aus on a IDE 2.5 just to play with linux. Anyhow it seems to read the USB stick which was created following the directions on this site but when it attempts to load the Realtec LAN (i think) it seems to get stuck in a loop. I have attached a screen print of what i see, it hangs for a few seconds then starts over with the same writing. Anyone know what that means or how i can fix this so i can try 10.10?

Ubuntu :: Caught In Login Screen Loop - Karmic 9.10

Mar 16, 2010

I have a real issue and need urgent help. I am stuck in a login loop and have looked in several threads in order to find a solution for my issue. I am relatively new to Ubuntu/Linux and do not really know my way around especially when it comes to command prompt. Thus I need someone with patience and who can guide me step by step in order to get to the bottom of the issue and to fix it.

The issue started all of a sudden, no particular reason. I only uninstalled evolution before and then rebooted. The shutting down process got stuck forever and I turn off the PC by holding the power button. Then I attempted to start, the PC boots to the login screen and I select my name and enter the correct password as usual. Then the screen changes for a split of a second to the back command screen and I can see the word crypto or so. Then the screen returns to the login screen and this loops.

Karmic 9.10, fully updated

CentOS 5 :: Burned Netinstall CD Caught In Endless Loop

Jan 5, 2010

I have burned the centos 5.4 i386 netinstall CD. It boots fine, but when I specify what mirror I want to use to install from, it gets caught in an endless loop. i have tried multiple mirrors and even tried both HTTP and FTP.
When I CTRL+F3 this is what I see:
"INFO: transferring [URL] to a fd"
ERROR: cannot determine address family of dist1.800hosting.com"
And then it just repeats over and over. I have looked at several mirros and I don't see that updates.img present at any of them.

Ubuntu :: Mount -o Loop - Flash BIOS Error "Intel UCode Loading Error" - Make Iso Images Bootsble From The Harddisk

Feb 19, 2010

I need to flash my BIOS to get rid of an error: "Intel uCode loading error". On [URL] I have found a tutorial, that looks to be fine. I can even see in the comments, that somebody have done this with success from Ubuntu 9.04, the very same system, that I use. Nevertheless I cannot make this bootCD with my Ubuntu 9.04, as it doesn't know the loop option to mount the image.

In the tutorial it says: "Requirements for this step is that you have support for the vfat and loop file systems in the kernel. Or you can have those features compiled as modules. In the latter case you can load the modules before the next step, like this:

modprobe vfat
modprobe loop"

loop doesn't seem to be present in my system, and the command modprobe loop returns an error that the module is not available. I tried to follow the tutorial anyway, but with no success. How can I get the module lopp? I also want to use it to make iso images bootsble from the harddisk.

Ubuntu :: ScanJet 6200c Causes Boot-Loop

Feb 16, 2011

I have a system which has been running 8.10 for two years (and am preparing to rebuild). Yesterday I thought to reboot it and am now stuck in a boot-loop getting the "not responding" x.xxxxxx error.

I made no changes prior to the reboot (just felt it was time) other than moving documents off the main drive onto a spare (preparing for the rebuild).

I have tried booting into several of the previous kernels and I ran memtest (flying colors). I keep getting the same error.

I have now built a 10.04 system for this machine. The old 8.10 drive seems to be in perfect order and I was able to pull various files from it.

I thought this would be the end of it but if I boot this new machine with my HP scanner attached via USB (any port) I get the boot-loop as in 8.10.

Again no changes were made to the 8.10 build prior to yesterday's reboot, and that scanner has been attached for more than two years (and working with fair reliability). I have had to alter its USB port or (inclusive) power-cycle it for Ubuntu to find it, but I had to do this when it was attached to an XP machine and so thought nothing of it.

Why has (presumably) the kernel driver suddenly crapped its pants?

Oh, and for the doubters I was able to boot into 10.04, open x-sane (which I prefer over Simple), locate the scanner (after power-cycling it), and scan an image. I just had to attach the scanner to the machine after the kernel loaded (at the login screen).

Ubuntu :: Reboot Loop On Dual Boot Netbook?

Mar 10, 2010

I recently installed Netbook Remix(Karmic, I think) on my Samsung N130 netbook as a dual boot with Windows 7. It had been working fine, I'd had no problems switching OS and I had restarted my computer many times without issue.

Today, I was on Windows 7, set it to hibernate when I left the house as I sometimes do, and when I came back and turned my computer on, first it asked which system I wanted to load which it never does after hibernation. I selected Windows, and it took me to the Samsung Recovery Solution screen for some reason, and I closed that. It restarted the computer, and when it turned back on it said GRUB loading, and rebooted again, and keeps looping that whenever I turn it on.

I tried removing Ubuntu using GParted from a flash drive, but I'm still stuck in the loop, and it's gotten rather frustrating.

Ubuntu :: Infinite Boot Cycle Loop After Grub

Jan 26, 2011

When I boot one of my machines, it gets as far as GRUB, then proceeds to a blank screen for a second, and then repeats the cycle all over again - ad infinitum. I have tried previous kernels on the list with the same results Also, I cant boot into recovery mode either.

I have run Memtest successfully from the GRUB options and no errors appear in the results. I have tried booting from a Live CD and here I get as far as the "OS choosing screen". When I then select one and hit Enter, the screen goes blank and the machine reboots as before.

Ubuntu Installation :: Resizing Partition - Vista Boot Stuck In Loop

Feb 19, 2010

I recently used a GParted CD to resize my partition with Vista installed on it in order to make room for another partition in which I installed Linux onto. I, unfortunately, did not back up my data. My Vista partition now does not show up in Grub and when I set it to just boot to the Vista install it will never boot and is stuck in a loop.

I tried using this guide to try to get it back. My problem comes about halfway through this guide when I go to repair my Vista installation nothing shows up under installations. I would really like to get my data from the Vista partition. I guess if I'm SOL then at least I'll remember to backup my data next time..

Ubuntu :: Mouse Caught In Firefox Even Alt-tab Doesn't Work?

Oct 31, 2010

When I start firefox the mouse seems captured by it.I can use the mouse inside the firefox screen (change tabs, use menu, select/paste) but not anywhere else. Even if a popup appears (site wants to register a cookie) then I can only use the keyboard to "ok" it. alt-tab to another window is not possible.Using the mouse in the gome-panel won't work.I can get the mouse pointer anywhere on the screen but mouse clicks don't seem to register. I've had this problem before on 10.04 and the only thing that worked then was to create a new useraccount (a lot of hassle).

edit: The window manager also won't react to the mouse so closing the firefox window is not possible using the windowmanager buttons(X - 0)It's also not limited to Firefox, after I closed firefox via it's menu and then started a gnome-terminal the mouse was caught in that. After closing the gnome-terminal and restarting firefox it degraded even further in that the mouse would'nt even work in the window itself anymore.Only a reboor would reset the problem.

Software :: Rtorrent 0.7.9 On Fedora - Caught Segmentation Fault

Dec 30, 2008

Due certain torrent sites I'm visiting I was forced to upgrade to rtorrent 0.7.9, which isn't avaiable through F8 repositories so I had to compile it myself. It went fairly smooth and I've been using it now for couple of months with no problems whatsoever.

However, recently, it started crashing on me, at the start, throwing out following message:

Caught Segmentation fault, dumping stack:
Stack dump not enabled.
Aborted

I have no clue what this is. I can assure you that I haven't altered anything on my system after I compiled the client.

Eventually, I am able to start the program, after an x-amount of tries.

I even tried to delete my session directory once. It seems to have helped at one occasion, but several days later, I was in the same trouble.

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot From USB Connected External Hard Take Long Time From Loading INITRD Image To Start Boot Process?

Jul 18, 2011

I have installed "open-SUSE 11.4" on a "500GB Free Agent External Hard Drive". I didn't have any problem in booting since last week that I booted it from my laptop. Also I did it before several times from then when I try to boot it e.g. from an "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz" PC the time between loading INITRD and starting boot sequence messages lasts nearly 30 minutes!(i didn't actually measure it but it take a long time in the same order). after starting boot sequence which is showed on monitor everything looks normal. e.g copy of files would be done by speeds between 2MB/s to 30 MB/s depending on the targets.I used to use the external hard derive to boot from different laptops and PC's from start but I didn't have such a problem anytime.

General :: Recovering Files On External Disk Caught In OS Installation

May 10, 2011

I was installing Ubuntu to the internal disk in my main machine, with all external drives unplugged for safety - then discovered I had accidentally chosen the external drive and it wasn't unplugged. (Seeing three drives not two listed as installation targets should have tipped me off, but I guess my IQ was low that day.)The external drive, in compliance with Murphy's Law, was my backup drive with all vital current files. The last few months of work gone. Now the drive shows only the stuff I normally expect in / on any Linux machine. It mounts showing as ext4, but the disk was (I'm 98.5% sure) originally ext3.However, the installation did not finish.Whatever files got copied, clobbered only a fraction of the disk. df reports only 1% of the space used.Maybe the bulk of my valuable files are okay, and could be recovered with some tool?

There are other questions on this site about file recovery, but many are for Microsoft Windows, or for malfunctioning disks, or some other situation. I'm on Linux with a physically healthy external disk. I'm fairly sure that the more recent and more important files are in multiple copies on that disk, so if one copy is clobbered there's hope to get the second copy.

[URL] didn't help, nor did searching in forums and bugs. I've enabled debug to /etc/gdm/custom.conf, and this is my .xsession-errors first part:

Code:

I removed .recently-used.xbel to avoid recently opened files to be logged, so this explains part of these errors. I had disabled gnome-screensaver but now I would need it to automate screen lock and looks like dbus may be the problem. My .dbus directory is empty.

Ive booted to a live cd and it now shows /dev/dm-2 for the root disk and -3 for the swap so im guessing grub is failing. Unfortunately I cant seem to get the device to mount and I fear im going to have to reinstall to fix this.
