I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 and am trying to install a Samsung ML1665 printer. When I insert the CD which accompanied the printer, the CD/DVD icon disappears from the Computer window. Where'd it go? I successfully installed the drivers on it onto my laptop (Windows Vista) without much problem.
Perhaps it should go on another thread, but I also downloaded the UnifiedLinuxDriver_086.tar.gz from the Samsung website, and unzipped it. Where to look for the unzipped files? I did stumble on them, and did install the driver from the deb file which was there, but when I try to print, I'm informed that there's a missing program called 'rasterto samsungspl' which needs to be installed. The unzipped files include five different ones with that name. Which one should I use, and how can I install the right one?

I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 (was having similar issues in 10.04 too) on his PC and generally it's working just fine. The problem is system tray icons disappears/rearranges automatically but the biggest issue is that NetworkManager applet icon disappears and somehow internet stops working every now and then...Is there any way to "weld" NetworkManager etc icons to the Gnome Panel/taskbar ? so that they can not be removed without entering the password?

New 11.3 install and working the wiggles out one at a time. If I minimize a window on the desktop it just disappears. Any and all open windows. Can't figure out how to maximize it again. They still active somewhere because I have to kill it (crtl / esc / kill process) to close Firefox and any other windows regardless of the application. Where are they going and how I do I modify this behavior

I activated the Global Menu applet (the old one that you can get from the Webupd8 PPA, not the new one that comes with Natty). I also activated the Window buttons and the Window Title applets. In effect, when I maximized my window with these applets activated, there was no title bar and no menu. I couldn't really get it to look very aesthetically pleasing, though, so I ended up removing all of them. However, now when I maximize my windows, the title bar is still gone. I've looked through gconf-editor and think I may have found the culprit, but I can't figure out how to get rid of it.
There's a leftover key from the Global Menu applet for show icon. When I was fooling around with the applets before, I set that value to "true" as default. I've tried unsetting the key. I've tried uninstalling Global Menu and cleaning the configuration files. I've logged out and rebooted. The key is still there.Assuming this is the issue (and I'm not sure that it is), what should I do here?

During my upgrade this fine afternoon, my system went into screensaver mode and would not bring up the security window. The window would flash for a very brief period and then disappear. I tried to enter the password to no avail. After 10 minutes of this, I gulped and re-booted. It seems to boot ok, but just like in the install, the login security window flashes and disappers. I have tried to type in the data with no luck. Does anyone have a work around? I am currently using my knoppix live disk until I can burn a deb live disk.

Whenever I minimize a window, it disappears into the right corner of the screen. There is no sign of it in the panel(bottom) also. What should I do so that I can relaunch the windows from the panel.

I'm relatively new to Ubuntu and I have a question. I have compiz config settings manager and I did some changes there but I've noticed now that for example when a skype chat window is open and when I move my mouse pointer away, the window disappears. It's not exactly like disappearing cause when I hover over the window, it shows itself but it's pretty annoying ;/ I've changed so many settings but no result

I recently did a fresh reinstall of opensuse 11.2 kde. After I installed it I updated the computer. However, when I returned to my computer after the update, I found the window borders to be missing and that I couldn't do anything with the desktop. I restarted, and lo and behold! I had KDE 4.4! Except I didn't want to install it. I perfectly like kde 4.3, and would probably prefer to move back to it until kde 4.4 becomes stable. Why did this happen? Had opensuse moved on to kde 4.4 already? Is there a way to get KDE 4.3 without reinstalling?

The title practically says it all, I'm using 9.10 Ubuntu fyi, when someone messages me in empathy, there is a pop-up top-left that says "so and so says xyz" but sometimes when I'm not looking, this may come up and only when I click on the mail icon I realise someone was trying to talk to me.

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu version 10.10 64-bit and since then closing GEdit won't stop the process automatically when the window is closed and I have to kill it manually. I didn't have this problem with version 10.04 (also 64-bit) and I didn't change any settings after the upgrade.

I'm trying to automatically remove some of the old GRUB entries that pile up after a few updates and just want to leave live 2 or 3 there along with my Win7 entry. I was looking and saw that there is a utility for Ubuntu but I couldn't find anything for Fedora.

I've been Googling all day and cannot find the answer. I find all the "GUI" ways to do it through Gnome and KDE but I'm not using either...I have an EEE PC set to boot up automatically to openbox and want Firefox to start after that in a full screen openbox window.I've tried adding the firefox command to ~/.initrc but it won't execute. I tried the command in .profile. This brings up firefox on a black screen without openbox.Firefox comes up fine when executed from the openbox menu.

I installed opensuse 11.2 today on my external hard drive and everything is running great, but I want to see if I can make a modification to the way my computer boots. I share this computer with others and they are not going to be happy to have to wait for the boot menu to start when they turn on the computer in order to choose which OS to run (Especially since if they do not make a choice it auto runs opensuse after a few seconds).
What I would like is if opensuse can be "out of sight, out of mind" and only load when I put in the live cd and then choose to boot from my external...... is it possible to do this?I am not a computer wizard and do not work in the industry.

1) Whenever a new release of Ubuntu comes out, I've always done a full replacement (Booted up live CD, formatted / and formatted /home) to ensure there's zero incompatibilities, including configuration files in my /home. That has, finally, gotten annoying and I was wondering what the actual chances of a configuration file causing problems was in the 6 months that Ubuntu was released in. Also, special consideration for Gnome 3 (aka gnome-shell) coming out with the current gnome configs.
2)Any way to remove unneeded config files automatically? I don't always use purge when I remove a package just in case I want to reinstall it, well weeks later I def don't want it, is there an apt or dpkg command that will automatically remove them after the package is gone? I know autoclean and autoremove handle orphans and unneeded .deb's
3) How stable is Sidux in reality? Ran it in a VM and had a few errors every so often while using it, but i wasnt sure how much of that was the fact it was a VM. Some say its stable enough for daily use, some say it breaks every other day

For the life of me I cant remember what this bar is called, but if you right click, it allows you to close the window, minimize or maximize it, etc.
I like black themes, and right now everything but that bar is black.
Is there any way to change that bar from white to black?

I'd imagine I sound like a complete clown but I am completely new to ubunto and linux in general. Having "fiddled around with it" for a matter of weeks I am finding generally I am quite pleased and am taking my time sorting through the chaff. Talking of chaff I have a problem from downloading a program previously which turned out to be unnecessary. Avast, I have removed the program and associated files but for some reason an Icon remains in the applications box at the bottom, not in a grouped file. I have tried various terminal commands taken from forums etc but none of these appear to have done the trick. A simple right click doesnt give me a remove to waste basket option and the drag and drop to waste basket doesn't work either. Amongst terminal efforts force remove etc etc., don't have any affect and the lines about the avast file does not exist.

this is probably something trivial but how can I auto start gdm on CentOS 5.4??I had to perform a text install due to Anaconda having some issues as I'm running Cent on Sun's VirtualBox.I have tried to add chkconfig --add gdm which didn't work, also there is no init.d script either for gdm so not sure if it's in a directory somewhere or if I have to create it manually??IF I run simply gdm from teh cli then everything is ok and starts fine....

Since I installed Centos in Text mode it automatically boots into terminal instead of X. I merely have to type "startx' and the gui loads without a problem. Is there a simple way to automate this so that I boot directly into the gui?
(BTW, I checked many of the posts about the GUI but most dealt with startx not working or with modifying VNC Server - that wiki seems like overkill in my case.)
