CentOS 5 :: Writing 2nd Session Of Multi-session DVD?
Jan 22, 2010I am putting together some new systems for my customer and I'm having some trouble with a script that we use to back up files to a DVD R. The problem is that I can't write a 2nd session to the DVD unless I eject the disk and reload it. The drives are slimline type drives, Sony BD-5730S and Teac DV-W28S-V93, so they won't reload without human intervention. Opsys is CentOS 5.4 or RHEL 5.4. I've tried both AMD and Intel based mother boards. If i try this on Fedora 11 or 12 it works fine. This works on IDE attached drives but not a SATA attached drives. Fedora appears to use something called genisoimage instead of mkisofs. I can't get genisoimage to run on CentOS or RHEL.

OpenSUSE Install :: Fresh Install + Update & Reboot = Unable To Open Session?
Sep 14, 2010I just reinstalled my OpenSuse 11.3 with the GNOME desktop. As soon as I was done installing and I was on a fresh desktop, I installed the Yast updates that were available, rebooted, and now I can't login to any of my User accounts. Whenever I try to login, it tells me that it is "Unable to Open Session".o any of you know how I can fix this without having to reinstall all over again

i read that dvd contains extra language packs. the Question : Does the CD image will be 100% functional for the usage of Arabic and English languages (i need full support for both) ,,,, AND is there any other data or software by any kind extra on the DVD what i mean is that Am I Missing anything other that the language packs?

Aug 12, 2010I would like to use Arabic as the system's language (menus, dialogs..etc.) but would like to keep to the LTR format of these objects. With things moving to the wrong side of the screen things can get confusing and unpleasant to work with. Is it possible to setup things so that I can have the language but keep the LTR direction of things?I'm running Lucid under Gnome.

Jul 9, 2009The first server I installed installed fine. The second server, installed with the same config, went to "kernel panic not syncing no init found try passing init= option in kernel" error. I tried reinstalling but it keeps going to that error after install reboot. The storage is ISCSI connected via Intel Server Adapter, which allows it to boot from ISCSI. Not sure if that's the cause for the problem, but the first server is connected to the same ISCSI and installed just fine.
Is there a way that I can make sure ISCSI module installs during installation? Although I think it is installed since it's able to copy the files and setup /dev/sda. I just wana make sure that it installs during setup.
CentOS 5 Hardware :: Fresh Install Of Centos Doesnt Display On Whole Screen?
Jun 8, 2009i didnt find a solution to a display problem im having. my server mobo is an asus k8n-dre with built in video. after the install(using built in video) the screen dosnt display fully as in black sections on the left and top of the screen. from the searching i did i found something about an "xrandr" command that would let me change the video settings but it didnt do anything with the black areas when i tried it. i also have a nvidia geforce 9500gt video card so i changed the jumper to boot from it and tried again. the black sections are still there but the centos display covers much more of the screen now. theres still about a third of an inch gap on the left hand side and about 1/4 of an inch on the top. ive also tried updating the software to see if it may be a driver issue but no luck. anyone know how or if it can fit to full sceen? the screen displays up to 1440x900 if im not mistaken but with the built in video it gave me lots of display options including the 1440x900. after changing to the nvidia card it only shows 800x600 and 640x480.

Mar 25, 2010I have three locations with a central office connected to two remote locations. At the central office I run on a cisco asa 5505 two site to site vpns. The remote end of the first site is a checkpoint firewall , and the remote end of the second site is racoon on debian. Both sites are up and working. However, where at the first site traffic goes both ways, at the second site it only works from the central office to the remote office.
For example, I can ssh from a host in the central office to a host in the first remote site (through checkpoint firewall,) then ssh back from that host at the remote office to any host in the central office. In contrast, after I ssh from a host in the central office to a host in the second remote office (through racoon), I cannot see the central office hosts (ping the ip address of a central office host, ssh, etc. all fail.) The vpn settings at the central office (the cisco asa 5505) are identical. So it seems to me that some routing magic is missing on the host running racoon at the second remote office. Where would such setting reside? racoon config files? iptables?
CentOS 5 :: No GUI After Fresh 5.3 Install
Apr 17, 2009I decided to do a fresh install of 5.3. I dedcided to use the entire HD for the install and not partition in any special way. I told it to format the HD and use the entire HD for linux OS. Just went thru the install with no additional software added, only what was the default install. After prompting for a user name and password i rebooted as requested. The issue is that i recieve no GUI to login to the desktop. Im able to SSH to the box and i tried doing yum update and it did not fix anything.i want to learn the command line but i need the gui for backup.

Nov 11, 2009I would like to replace my aging Freenas box with a CentOS based NAS. I would like it to have the following features:
- SAMBA with Web admin
- BIND with Web admin
- Nice to have would be native AFP support for my MAC
Question 1: Is SWAT still the current Web-based config tool for SAMBA or is there something newer?
Question 2: Is there a decent, reliable, web front end for BIND?
Question 3: Is there a current AFP guide for CentOS, everything I am finding via Google is years old.
I would also like to build a second server that I would host off-site to sync my data to.
- I was thinking OpenVPN for the link between the servers. The "remote" NAS will have to be the one initiating the connection.
Question 4: Is OpenVPN the way to go or is there something better? (I need bidirectional communications)
Question 5: Is rsync still the way to go for the data sync or is there something newer which would be lighter and/or faster?
Just need some "current" advice overall - I think the last SAMBA box I built was 4-5 years ago so what I learned then may not be applicable today.
CentOS 5 :: Unable To Do Fresh Install 5.4
May 8, 2010I cannot boot from the OS dvd. It says looking for boot info on CDDVD then boots right into an older version of windows that happens to be on the hdd. If I unplug the hard drive I can get into the CentOS installer but this is useless because the hdd isn't viewable as a place to install the new OS. I don't know if I need to format the drive before hand so that Cent has a clean slate or if there is a problem with the DVD itself. The later I dont believe so based on the working of the installer while hdd unplugged. The DVD drive is on its own ribbon and both hdd and dvd drive or set to primary master in DOS.
Aside: I have recenlty moved to centOS formally using ubuntu and messing around with fedora on another computer. I am using cent based on work with school, they recommended cent for project with professor.
CentOS 5 Server :: Fresh Install On VPS Using SSH?

After playing around with my vps, learning how certain stuff works and so on, i somehow messed up my server.
Is it possible to do a fresh install remotely using only putty, and nothing else but putty, of my server with centos 5.6?

Mar 19, 2009I'm familiar with linux (Debian/Ubuntu), but new to CentOS. I recently installed CentOS 5.2 on a new server for my radio station. I can log in and do everything fine, save connect to any network. I only have a Broadcom wired nic. I know the wire and ethernet jack work fine, so that lead me to the server's settings. I'm not sure if I missed something somewhere, or a similar post (I'm sorry for double-posting if this has been done before).
There is a static IP address set, and that's done correctly.

CentOS 5 :: Fresh Install But Extras Fail
Nov 30, 2009I have just downloaded and installed the latest version that I know of, Centos 5.4. I initially selected all of the packages and the installations crashed. Since I am installing it on a private network I couldn't save the info. I tried deselecting the packages until finially figuring out the 'extras' was the problem. I deselected that and the installation went fine. What's on the extra's? Part of the error message was something to do with a Python. I have been trying to use Cobbler, is that part of the 'Extras'.

Apr 1, 2010I downloaded 5.4 DVD iso, burnt it to DVD and installed it, when booting up it goes through gives loads of green okays, then when going into the GUI (presumably) it shows a blank screen.
I did some googling and found out to run system-config-display, however when I run this the monitor goes blank and does not work, I have tried a few variations of setting the resolution etc. but nothing worked.

I didn't install Grub since Ubuntu is already present on the first drive. I let Grub2 OS prober install it in Grub menu. Here is the grub line:

The Dell instructions are not that helpful. They explain an RPM Install and a DKMS Install - what's the difference between the two?
